ThreedowntownHartselle businessownershaveaskedCity Councilmemberstohelpthem dealwithafellowbusinessowner theysayhasbeenrepeatedlyhostiletowardthem,theiremployees andsometimestheircustomers.

Duringthecouncilmeeting Tuesday,theownerssaidMei HueiLai,whoownsSunflowersat 223MainSt.W.,routinelybangs ontheirstorewindowsandenters theirbusinessesandbehavesin anantagonisticmanner.Dueto alanguagebarrier—theysaythe

ownerspeaksChinese—theydo notunderstandhergrievances.

BethKershner,whoownsthe giftshopZoey’sDowntownat225 MainSt.W.,askedthecouncil whatcouldbedone,including revokingtheowner’sbusiness license.CityClerkRitaLeeconfirmedWednesdaythatHueiLai holdsacurrentbusinesslicense.

Thecounciltooknoaction,but thecityattorneyagreedtoinvestigatethematter.Kershneralso gavethecouncilalistofrulesshe wouldlikethebusinessownerto abidebyinthefuture.

TwoHartselleseniors wererecentlyacceptedinto pharmacyschoolbefore theirgraduationthatwill beheldMay20.Theirearly acceptancewasmadepossiblethroughtheirparticipationinthehighschool’s MedicalAcademy.

LakelenCriderandJett Johnsonhaveparticipated intheacademysincetheir freshmanyearsandare certifiedpharmacytechniciansatGilchrestPharmacy.

Crider’sofferwasfrom theHarrisonCollegeof PharmacyatAuburnUniversitywhileJohnson’s wasfromtheMcWhorter SchoolofPharmacyat SamfordUniversity. Havingalreadyaccumulated40collegecredits, JettwillnotattendSamfordforhisbachelor’s degree–hesaidheplans toattendCalhounfora yeartosavemoneyand gostraightintopharmacy school.

CriderwillattendAuburn Universitythisfalltopursueadegreeinbiomedical science.Shesaidthepeace ofmindknowingshehasa spotwaitingforheratthe HarrisonCollegeofPharmacyisarelief.

“It’sjustsocompetitive, togetintotheseadvanced programs,”Sheltonsaid. “It’slikethey’resaving themaspot.”

ForbothJettandCrider, theirchoiceinpursuing careersinthehealthcare industryisabouttheconnectionsmadewithpeople.

“Ihavecompassionfor peopleandanempathy forhelpingothers,”Johnsonsaid.“Iactuallydidn’t knowwhatIwantedtodo beforeIstartedworkingin apharmacy.Igotintothe job,andIlovewhatIdo.”

“Anytimesomeonehas aquestionabouttheir health,theypickuptheir medicineandtheyaska pharmacist,”Crideradded. “Youhavetoknowso muchandIwanttobelike that.Ilovetheconnectiontheyhavewiththeir communitiesandhowthey

knowtheirnames.It’svery special.”

JettandCriderattribute theirearlyacceptanceinto pharmacyschooltotheir yearsinthemedicalacademyand,specifically,their instructors,LynneShelton,KimGoinsandJan Langston.

“Itsetusupforsuccess notjustwithknowledge, butthere’saworkethic thatyoubuildandprofessionaldevelopment,” Johnsonsaid.“Youwork onyourselfovertime,and itmakesyougrowupand setsomegoals.

“Allthisisreallybecause ofMrs.Shelton,she’s workedonmeforfour years,”headded.

“IcameintomyfreshmanyearnotevenknowingwhatIwantedtodo, andIhadnomotivation –Ididn’tevengetgood grades,”Cridersaid.“Then Mrs.Sheltoninstilled motivationinmethatI neverhadbeforeandI’m genuinelysoexcitedtosee whereittakesme.”

Thecarfeaturesayellow,black andgraybackgroundtoppedwith thefaceofaratherferociousbulldog,theschool’smascot.

Theideatowrapthecarinvinyl sprungfromPricevilleschool resourceofficerChrisChampion. Overtheyears,Champion,who servedasagamewardenfrom 1993to2023,afterwhichhe becameanSRO,saidhehadseen SROvehiclesownedbyothercities andcountiessportingvinylvehiclewrapsthatpicturedtheschool colorsandsometimetheschool mascot.

“Thereisnothingnewunderthe sun,”hesaid,dismissingcreditfor theidea.

“WhenIwenttobasicSROschool lastsummerinPigeonForge(Tennessee),afewschoolsandagencies whoemployofficershadwrapson theircarsthathadschoolcolors andmascots.Igotontheinternet andpulledupotherexamples.”

HesaidthewrapontheSROcar showsschoolprideanditshows involvementinthecommunityand

howimportanttheSROprogram istothehighschoolandthecity.

“It’sjustatiebetweenthecommunityandtheschoolthrough thepolicedepartment,”Champion said.

Championtooktheideatolocal highschoolartteacherJanet Cavender,whoaskedherdigital mediadesignclasstoputtheir headstogether.AlyssaWalldorf,an 18-year-oldstudent,didsomeof thedesigning,whichwasdoneon acomputerprogram,shesaid.The designwasthensentontoShelton SignCo.ofDecatur,whichcreated thewrap,Championsaid. “Thekidsallcollaborated,and Alyssa’sconceptwasadoptedon bothsidesofthevehicle,”Cavender said. StudentstriedtomatchacommonlyusedtypefaceatPriceville High.

Walldorfsaidshewashappytobe apartofthecreation.

“Ifeelalotofprideforbeingable totakepartinthis,”Walldorfsaid. “Itisalovelyfeelingtohelppeople createsomethingthatisgoingto beonacopcar.”

Oneoftheaspectstheteacher saidshelikedaboutthelogowas itappearedalittleshredded,presumablybyeitherthescrappymascot’spaworteeth.

“I’vebeenproudofthisgroupall year,”Cavendersaid.“Theydolots ofprojectsanddovideoediting.” PricevilleTownCouncilmembers alsoplayedaroleintheprocess. Theyrecentlyagreedtohavethe citypayforthe$2,400wrap. SROsarespeciallytrainedand armedlaw-enforcementofficers whoarepostedatschoolsthroughoutthenation.Theyaretrained incrisisresponseandareassigned bylocallawenforcementagenciestoworkcollaborativelywith schoolsusingcommunity-oriented policingconcepts,accordingtothe NationalAssociationofSchool ResourceOfficers. Walldorfsaidshelikeshavingan SROofficeraroundandbelieves mostotherstudentsdoaswell. “Hedoesn’tmakeyounervous. Heseemslikeafriend,ahelpful adultyoucangotoforsupport,” WalldorfsaidofChampion.“He’s alsoaformofsafetyattheschool.” NASROsaysthethreemainroles ofschoolresourceofficersareas educator,informalcounselor/mentorandlawenforcementofficer. “Youmaintainthesecurityofthe facilityandatballgames,butjust asimportantisbeingatrusted adultinsomeofthesekids’lives,” Championsaid.“Nothingisoffthe table—Italktothem.”

Wandaearneddegreesat JohnC.CalhounCommunityCollege,AthensState University,andtheUniversityofAlabamaatBirmingham.AtCalhoun,she servedasaWarhawkstudentambassadorandparticipatedonthedebateteam. Earningamaster’sdegree inAdolescentCounseling atUABenabledWandato practiceprofessionally whatshehaddoneinan unofficialcapacitymostof herlife.Sheworkedwith andguidedyoungpeople.Hereffervescent personalityandgenuine loveforyoungpeoplemade heranaturalmentor.

Inheryoungeryears, WandacoachedtheHillbillies,aHartsellegirls’s youthleaguesoftballteam. Shecheeredaspiringpageantcontestantsand judgedareacompetitions.Sheparticipatedin Hartselle’sLittleTheater. Shewasalsoanavidsup-

porterofDecatur’sannual SpiritofAmerica,especially theMissPointMallard BeautyPageant,whichshe loved. Wandawasamemberof EnonBaptistChurchmost ofherlife.Duringtheyears shelivedatAuburnand onLakeMartin,sheworshippedattheFirstBaptist ChurchofDadeville.She workedwiththeyouthat bothchurches,combining Biblicalinstructionwith memory-makingactivities. Forexample,occasionally, shewouldallowtheyouth groupatEnonto“borrow”a caseoftoiletpaperfromthe supplyclosetandrollsome member’syard.Thosewho participated,stillenjoyreminiscingaboutsomeoftheir youthgroupadventures.

Wandaembracedthe philosophythatalthough painisinevitable,miseryis optional.Evenasrheumatoidandosteoarthritisravagedherbody,she remainedjoyfuland optimistic,neversuccumbingtobitternessor complaints.Instead,she smiledwhensherecalled thedayswhenshehad playedleaguetennisin Auburn,hadplayedsoftballwiththeTomboysin Decatur,andhadworn herownpairofskates whenshewenttoPhillips SkatingRink.

Wanda’ssurvivorsinclude herhusbandof37years, PhilipHolkWestandtwo sons,TonyWallaceand TerryWallace(Robyn).Survivinggrandchildrenare TeraWallaceMoon(Joey), RyanWallace(Ashley) andJessicaWallace.Survivinggreat-grandchildren areMakenzieBarnettRobertson(Brett),PearlMoon, ByronPenn,GraceWallace andIanWallace.

Wandaisalsosurvivedby ahostofniecesandnephewswhoselivesshehas enrichedimmeasurably.She couldfindhumorinalmost anycircumstance,even whenshepulledoffhershoes whilewatchingamovie atthePrincessTheater andhadtowalkbarefootedupSecondAvenuein Decaturbecausesomeone seatednearherhadtaken hershoes.

muchoftheremainingtime,Iwas alonewithher.Effiewasavery privateindividualandwouldnot allowanyoneelse,includingour daughters,tohelpwithherneeds. AtthetimeIwasinmyearly eighties.Theconstantstraintook itstollonmephysicallyandemotionally.Inthefollowingmonths, Iwashospitalizedforseveraldays ontwoseparateoccasions.Itwas obviousIcouldnotcarryonthe sameprogramsofministryas before.Overthefollowingmonths, Idealtwithaginganditsconsequences. SlowlyIfoundsatisfactoryplaces ofservice.OrasItellmypastor friendscontemplatingretirement, theyfoundme.Tomydearfriends whofindthemselvesinsituations suchasthoseIfaced,Iofferyoumy prayers,love,andencouragement. Hartselle High and Hartselle Junior High Theatre made waves at the Alabama Thespian Festival in February at Vestavia High School.Highschoolstudents competed in 30 events, with 18 qualifying for nationals at Indiana University this summer. This year, 20 Hartselle High students qualified, a significant increase from previous years, according to dramateacherLisaKing.

TheMorganCountyCommissionwillrequireallcounty employeestotakeaharassmentpreventioncourseprovidedbyCalhounCommunityCollege,butthechairman saidthedecisionwasnottriggeredbyanyincidentandno complaintshavebeenfiled.

“Wedon’thaveanissuewith itrightnow,butit’sjustgood forustohavethoseclasses toremindpeoplewherethe boundariesare,”Morgan CountyCommissionChair-

manRayLongsaid.“When youhavethismanyemployees…sometimespeoplemay tellyouajokethatreallyyou don’twanttohear,butthey don’trealizeit.”

Longsaidtheclassisjusta preventativemeasure.

“Kindoflikechangingthe oilinyourcar,youwantto preventanydamagefrom happening.So,that’swhat wewanttodohere,”hesaid.
