PRICEVILLE—Through themudandrain,workerscontinuedbuildingwalls andhangingsteelbeamsin thenewPricevilleJunior HighbuildingonNew BethelRoadthisweek,stayingontrackforofficialsto opentheschoolintimefor the2025-26schoolyear.

ThecurrentPriceville JuniorHighfacilitieson Alabama67werebuiltduringthe1960sandinclude severalsmallerbuildings.

PrincipalAshleyMcCulloch saidhavingasingle,modern buildingwithallherstudentsunderoneroofwillbe aluxury.

“Theschoolisgoingto offersomemoremodern amenitiessowe’rerealexcited,”McCullochsaid.

The$31million, 101,000-square-footschool willbelocatednextdoorto thehighschool.Itwillhold upto800students,which administratorsexpectto accommodatethegrowing populationinthecommunity.Theschoolcurrently has510studentsingrades5 through8.

From2010to2020,Priceville’spopulationincreased by32%,from2,658to3,512, accordingtothecensus. Residentialdevelopment hasacceleratedsince2020.

MorganCountySchools SuperintendentTracieTurrentinesaidthePriceville andWestMorganschools arethefastestgrowing schoolsinherdistrict.

Turrentinesaidworkers werefinishingconstructingwallsthispastweekand havepouredalloftheconcrete.

“Onethingthatiskindof uniqueaboutthegymis it’sgoingtohaveamultipurposeroom,”Turrentine said.“Thisroomwillbebig enoughtohaveanextra physicaleducationclassor (staff)canhavemeetings there,liketeachertraining.”

Cerrowire expansion named finalist in Business Alabama Awards

The Cerrowire expansion project in Hartselle was named finalist in this year’s Business Alabama Awards for Project of the Year. The project saw the introduction of a cuttingedge 270,000-square-foot MC Cable production plant at the Morgan Center BusinessPark.

The grand opening of the plant took place on June 13,2023.

“It’sjustthebeginning.We have plans to grow much further beyond this,” Cer-

rowire president Stewart Smallwoodsaidatthetime.

The plant, which produces metal-clad cabling, is an expansion facility for the Hartselle company and was the first tenant at the multimillion-dollar business park since it opened in2011.

Cerrowire, founded in 1920asCircleFlexibleConduit Co., has been headquarteredinHartsellesince 1983. It also has plants in Georgia, Indiana and Utah. Cerrowire is a Marmon/ Berkshire Hathaway company.

TheMorganCountyCommission has set aside $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to put toward courthouse renovations, including new waiting rooms on the second andthirdfloors.

“We’re doing several things, making the courthouse a better place,” said Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long.

“Alotofpeoplecomeinand out, and we need to be up to standard and be a building they can be proud of. … We want it to be better for the citizens. It’s a county building, but it needs a lot of work. It was built in the 1970s, so it’s time for some renovations.”

Long said the waiting room on the second floor willbeforthetagoffice.

“When people come to get their car tags now a lot of times they line up and down the hall and around,” he said. But after the renovations, he said, “You come in and register and then they’ll call your number.

“There’s a lot of instances where people are out in the halls and really making noise for the courts,” he said. “This is going to give them a place to go out and sit down, relax. Have a place for the kids to sit down and not be running up and down the halls duringcourt.”

The commission is also replacing the HVAC unit at the courthouse with the ARPAfunds. “This is still the unit that was put in the building when it was built in 1973,” Long said. “We have a lot of issues with it. Brewer livestock team secures state championship

Special to the Enquirer Brewer High School’s Livestock team recently won both the North District FFA Livestock Contest and the Alabama State FFA Livestock Contest in Montgomery. Their stellar performance has propelled them to the national competition.

At the district level, the team placed first overall, with Callie Childers emerging as the High Individual overall and Lincoln Kallas closely following as the secondhighindividualoverall.

Their dominance continued at the state level, with standout performances in variouscategories:

-InSwine,Brewerclaimed first place as a team, with CallieChildersandLincoln Kallas securing first and second individual rankings, respectively. We’ve been sealing those cracks and patching them since I’ve been here. We’ve got money now that we can actually replace them. As theystartgettingcracks,it’s asafetyhazard.”

Stisher said there is a real need for repaving the parkinglots.

“The parking lots, they’re crowded,” he said. “We’re just growing more and more each day, which is a goodproblem.”

fundssetasideforreplacing allthewindowblindsinthe courthouse. “We’ve had the same blinds here since they built thecourthouse;they’reold,” Long said. “We want blinds thatwork.” Federal ARPA funds were provided to governmental entities to aid in public healthandeconomicrecovery from COVID. Long said all ARPA funds must becommittedbyDecember 2024 and any funds that are left over by December 2026 must be given back to the federal government.

“When the bids come in, we’ll say at the end of May,

and it only comes in at $8 million, we’ll reclassify that other $2 million to another project,” Long said of the $10 million set aside. “We’re trying to use (our ARPA funds) and get all of it committed before the end of December. We never want to send money back.”

Stisher said the ARPA funds are an opportunity to take care of a lot of improvements the courthouse needs.

“We’ve kept it in good shape over the years, but there are still some things that could be upgraded and modernized,” he said.

Most Morgan County employees to get one-time longevity payment

Most of Morgan County’s full-time employees will see extra pay soon, after the County Commission approved a onetime payment based on how long an employee has been with the county, with some employees set to receive $1,500.

“It’s a way for us to try to encourage employees to stay with us,” said Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long. “We get good employees, but sometimes they get bet-

ter offers money-wise somewhere else. But we have a lot to offer here in the county. We have great insurance, we have the state retirement, and sometimes we need to do extra things that we can just to show them.”

Tuesday at the Morgan County Commission meeting, commissioners approved the one-time longevity pay for 230 of the county’s 345 full-time employees based on their years of service with the county as of March 1. The 115 employees who will not receive the pay are

either part-time or have been with the county less than two years.

The cost will total $214,000, most of which will come out of the general fund, Long said. He said the payments will be paid out to employees on March 28. It will be the same day as pay day for the employees but will be a separate payment.

The 100 full-time employees who have been with the county for two to five years will receive $500. The 51 employees

Holmessaidhe“wouldn’t be surprised” if more charges are filed against Knox.

Hartselle Fire & Rescue Chief Daryl Fox said Knox’s arrest came as a shock to him and his department.

“You think you know somebody and then you

don’t,” he said. “To my knowledge, nothing ever happened while on shift.”

Fox said Priceville police had communicated to him that they were looking into Knox a couple of days before Knox resigned.

“So, when he called me to resign, I kind of knew a little bit from the Police Department’s investigation,” he said. “I already kind of knew from the police what was going to happen and what

they were looking for. He (Knox) told me some things when he resigned, but it wasn’t about the charges. I’ll just let all that come out in court.” Knox was a lieutenant and supervisor at Station 2, according to Fox, directly in charge of two others. When the deputy chief was away for whateverreason,Knoxoversaw the entire shift. “It’s caused some problems for us we’re having

to deal with, you know, like the public eye,” Fox said. “We definitely don’t approve of this behavior. The public needs to know that they’re safe and we’re still going to do our job as we’re supposed to.”

Wilbanks began investigating Knox after Priceville police received a report about a possible “inappropriate or illegal” relationship with a child on Feb. 15, according to an affidavit signed by Wilbanks and

filed in Morgan County District Court on Monday.

“Asearchwarrantwasconducted on Knox’s residence and a (Samsung) Galaxy Tab A8 was seized,” the affidavit reads. “A search warrant was obtained for (the tablet) and from that search the listed images were found.”

Nine pictures depicting childpornwereseizedfrom Knox’s tablet, according to the affidavit. The date of the offense, according to

the official complaint, was Feb. 18 — the same day Knox resigned from the Fire Department.

A Morgan County judge signed Knox’s arrest warrant on Friday and indicatedspecialbondconditions, should he be released.

Knox is required to enroll in Community Corrections’ pretrial release program and wear an ankle monitor and is forbidden to have contact with the victim or her family.

Storms fall trees in Hartselle, one injured

The Morgan County Emergency Management Agency reported 28 weather related incidents this past Friday morn-

ing, mainly involving trees blocking roadways according to EMA Director Jonathan Warner. Thedamagecameasaline of thunderstorms moved through north Alabama late Thursday and Friday morning.

“We had a tree go through a house in Hartselle on Guy Roberts Road and had one minor injury with that,” Warner said. “There was also some damage at Hartselle airport and some barns in the county were damaged.”

“Cost is high, and inflation is high, so it will help them along the way,” he said. “We appreciate their commitment to the county and their hard work. I think they’re very deserving of it.”
