VOLUME 91, NO. 7

ff By Eric Fleischauer For the Enquirer A homeowner shot and killed a burglar breaking into his home early Saturday

morning, according to the Limestone County Sheriff ’s Office. At 4:20 a.m., Limestone County sheriff ’s deputies responded to the 17000 Block of Morris Road in

Elkmont on a report of a burglary in progress. The homeowner reported that he was awakened by someone violently attempting to gain entry into his residence.

The homeowner armed himself and awaited the deputy’s arrival, the Sheriff ’s Office said, but before deputies arrived, the offender kicked in the homeowner’s door and entered the resi-

dence. The homeowner shot him, the Sheriff ’s Office said, and the burglar left the house and died outside. Investigators identified the deceased as Christopher Jason Hovis, 44, of

Hartselle. “This investigation is ongoing; however, preliminary results indicate this is a justified shooting, and there are no charges at this time,” the Sheriff ’s Office said.

Counting the days to spring

f you’re counting the days left in winter and looking forward to the beginning of spring, you were happy February 2 when Pennysylvania’s Ground Hog failed to see its shadow when it slipped out of its den to check on the weather. According to tradition, anytime the ground hog sees its shadow, it supposedly returns to its den for 26 more weeks of winter, meaning we can expect spring to arrive around the middle of March. My curiosity prompted me to look for change of season signs around my yard on Bethel Road. Yellow Bells in a flowerbed at the south corner of our home are full

ebruary has long been known as the season in which romance is celebrated in various ways. Customs have greatly changed in my lifetime. When I entered school in the early 1940s valentines were given to friends. The most popular students might receive dozens while others received two or three. As I became older, I only sent a card to a special person. It was a custom that had a deeper meaning. I will admit that I have been called a Romanticist. I like a good story with a happy ending. I miss those movies where the cowboy wins the reluctant young lady and they overcome all obstacles and live

’ve always been a rule follower. It’s just my disposition. It’s not rooted in any righteousness or self-discipline; it just never occurred to me that you could break a rule. I like the order that rules bring. My older brother, on the other hand, always liked a little bit of chaos. Mama always said I believed the world would be better if everyone followed the rules and our sister thought there should be no rules. Our brother, Mama said, felt like someone should test the boundaries of all of those rules and he was just the man to do it.

behind. Lawn mowing season will be back within a month. Thankfully, the return of central daylight time will give us two more hours of daylight time to spend outdoors in a couple of months. Weather permitting, the time is right to do some plowing in the garden and planting of earlymaturing and cold resistant vegetables such as greens, cabbage, potatoes, onions and sweet corn. The customary time to plant early-maturing corn on our farm was late March while cotton and most vegetable crops followed by two to three weeks. Setting out tomato plants was an exception. We grew them as a first year crop in a new

ground that had been cleared of trees and undergrowth the winter before. They were planted in March on an east-facing hillside to take advantage of early morning sunshine. Coverings of pine straw protected them from frost and enabled them to produce mature fruit three to four weeks ahead of normal plantings. Early-maturing tomatoes sold at retail for 25 cents per pound. When every peddler had them to sell, the price dropped to 10 cents per pound. “I can’t grow ‘em, haul ‘em and sell ‘em at that price,” our father said. Therefore, we picked them and fed them to our hogs.

be that sentiments of love could be expressed in more meaningful ways than words on a card. A well-known organization’s appeal for funds during February asks an ages-old question—what is love? Their answer is found in the replies of several children with special physical needs for which they have been provided treatment. The answers given are as individual as the particular help the children have received. As I rejoice with those whose lives have been made easier by the gifts of others, I am reminded of the words of a seminary professor in a Social Ethics class when he stated “it is easier to illustrate love than it is to define it.”

Those who have attempted to define love have long sought for the correct words. Philosophers have written volumes on love and its various expressions. The Greeks used a number of words denoting love. Theologians have tried to grasp the magnitude of God’s love for man. Poets have written of romantic love in eloquent ways with heart-felt words. All seem to agree that love is best expressed by the giving of one’s self for another’s good. Genuine love is truly demonstrated in the giving of self. The book had articles about the Music City Miracle and the incredible play of Steve McNair. There were pictures of the new stadium in the shadow of the Batman Building downtown and of Kevin Dyson’s arm stretched out towards the goal line as time expired. Then towards the back, in a two page spread blown up so big and clear that Helen Keller could have seen it was a picture of eleven young boys with “AFC-CHAMPS!” painted on their chests.

Mission Statement

As it turns out, my brother had not heard Mama and Daddy when they said he couldn’t go to the parade because right there on the page stood my brother with a giant F on his chest. It was really spectacular. It was as if Jesus were referring to that very moment when he said, “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.” We laugh about it now, and I think we laughed about it then. Maybe next Christmas I’ll get it framed for my brother’s sons to have.

his delicious lemon zucchini bread has a lovely lemon glaze and is a quick favorite for your summer squash. This bread freezes well, so try doubling the recipe and freezing one for later. If you freeze it, do not add the glaze at this time; wait until you thaw it out to make the glaze and add it then. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 cup granulated sugar Zest of one lemon 2 tsp. lemon juice 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup plain (unsweetened) apple sauce 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 cup grated zucchini (about 1 medium zucchini, peeling optional) For the glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar

1 Tb. milk 1 tsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract Instructions To begin, preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a standard 8x5-inch loaf pan. Alternative, coat with Baking Spray Replacement – recipe on cosmopolitancornbread.com. Set aside for now. Combine the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder in a small bowl. Give those a stir and set aside. Put the sugar in a mixing bowl. Using a microplaner or other utensil, zest the lemon into the mixing bowl. Zest the whole lemon. Juice lemon and add 2 teaspoons of the juice to the mixing bowl. Reserve the

remaining juice for later. Add the apple sauce, extra virgin olive oil, vanilla extract and eggs to the mixing bowl. Whisk until smooth. Add in dry ingredients and whisk smooth. Stir in the shredded zucchini. Spread the batter into the loaf pan. Bake for one hour or until the loaf tests done when tested with a wooden pick. Place the pan on a cooling rack and let the loaf cool for five minutes in the pan. Remove the loaf to the cooling rack and cool completely. For the glaze, combine the powdered sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract and milk. Whisk smooth. Drizzle over the lemon zucchini bread.

Lady Tigers race to the Northwest Regional

By Russell Frye For the Enquirer The Hartselle Lady Tigers used a dominating defensive performance to race past Lee 52-30 in a 6A sub-regional matchup this past Saturday. “I couldn’t be any prouder of how out defense played and how well we rebounded,” said Hartselle head coach Amber Deline. “We handled their pressure really well which led to open looks on the offensive end.” The 6A No. 8 Lady Tigers trailed 3-2 inside the first minute, but would never trail again in the win. They lead 14-7 after the first quarter and 22-10 at the half. They extended their lead to 37-14 after the third quarter. Hartselle’s defense had a six quarter streak over two games where they allowed only single digits to the opposing offenses. After allowing five, four and five in the final three quarters to

Cullman, they allowed only seven, three and four in the first three quarters of the subregional win over Lee. The Lady Tigers forced 23 Lee turnovers and outrebounded them 42-31, while holding them to a 20.4 shooting percentage. Hanna Burks led Hartselle (19-6) with 17 points and nine rebounds. Mary Frances Itsede finished with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Gracie Hill had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. “I am glad that Hannah and Gracie are on our team and that we do not have to defend them,” Deline said. “They struggled in the first half but came out in the third quarter and started making shots as we pulled away.” Hartselle 59, Cullman 29 Hartselle won their third straight 6A Area 14 Championship with a 59-29 win over Cullman. The Hartselle defense came alive after allowing 15 first quarter points, holding Cullman to five points in the second quarter, four in third and five in the fourth. They held the Lady Bearcats’ leading scorer, Ally Sharpe, to 11 total points, including just two in the second half. “The defense played extremely well after the first quarter,” Deline said. “Anna Hampton Burroughs was able to shine as she picked up the scoring as Cullman defensively took Gracie out of the game.” Anna Hampton Burroughs led Hartselle with a career-high 25 points. Hartselle soccer kicks off, varsity boys face Florence By Russ Gordon For the Enquirer

Hartselle High School’s soccer season kicked off Feb. 6, with both ups and downs for the boys’ and girls’ teams. The varsity boys faced a tough challenge at home against the Florence Falcons (7A) and experienced a 0-5 defeat.

Despite the setback, Coach Dan Bennich expressed confidence in the team’s potential for improvement, stating, “We will get stronger because of what went wrong. It’s a tough way to start the season, but we purposefully play good teams to help us get better. We played a lot better in the second half.”

In contrast, the junior varsity boys secured a victory against Florence, with Grayson Vines scoring the lone goal, resulting in a 1-0 win. On the same day, the Hartselle Girls’ soccer teams faced off against the Athens Lady Eagles. The Varsity Girls experienced a 1-3 loss, with Kaitlyn Dolbeer
