There is increasing talk in the media about “ecological footprints”. This is the area of Earth required to sustain the daily resource requirements of mankind. Basic resources include food, clothing, energy as well as disposal and recycling. Just imagine that everyone leaves an ecological footprint on Earth through their daily actions. And if we are completely honest, our footprint is much too large – so large that Earth is actually too small to cope with all of our “feet”.

5 TIPS FOR RIDING IN EXTREME HEAT Cycling can be quite a strenuous and especially sweaty business in the heat. “Can be” – but doesn’t have to be!

This means that you do not have to turn your back on your bike in the summer when it is extremely hot: 1. DRINKING IS THE BE ALL AND END ALL! If you drink enough, you will boost your performance and concentration. This is especially important in road traffic. Particularly when it is hot, we lose a lot of fluids and should replenish these regularly and continually. Incidentally, an insulated bottle for the bike is actually very practical!

2. PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST THE SUN! Cover your head, wear sunglasses and apply sun screen with a high sun protection factor. If you are not adequately protected, you risk burning your skin. This is due to the fact that the cool air flow felt while cycling lets you underestimate your exposure to sunlight very quickly.

3. TAKE REGULAR BREAKS IN THE SHADE! Give your body a rest and cool down in the shade for a little.

4. Use the cooler morning hours for a bike ride! In the midday sun between 2.00 p.m. and 5 p.m., the sun is too strong for your body to cope with when cycling.

5. Wear functional clothing! Your clothes should, where possible, be light and breathable to prevent a build-up of heat.

TIME TO PICNIC! A TRIP TO THE COUNTRYSIDE Blue sky and sunshine not only put us in a good mood in summer but are also invitations to spontaneous trips and outdoor activities.

So why not combine lunch with a bike ride and have a picnic in the great outdoors? Ultimately a picnic is nothing other than enjoying a meal under the open sky. And nothing is better here than home-made snacks and finger food.

Apart from finger food delicacies, what else shouldn’t be missing from a picnic basket?

- picnic blanket - plates or camping crockery - cups or glasses - serviettes or kitchen roll - drinks - fruit as dessert, e.g. grapes or melon

There are a variety of transport boxes or baskets for the front or rear luggage rack that are perfectly suitable as a picnic basket and even a small table. The treats that you bring with you can be served directly and you can really get into the spirit of summer with family or friends!

Because it doesn’t matter where your boneshaker has taken you – eating outside at a location that’s not part of your daily routine is exciting and fun. And that applies to both young and old alike! Perhaps it’s the simplicity of a picnic; after all, it doesn’t take much either in terms of food or entertainment.

So grab your EXCELSIOR bike, pack your basket and experience that summer feeling!

HEARTY AVOCADO CHIPS Recipe for 2 servings: 1 avocado 80g bacon Cut the avocado in half and remove the stone. Then cut the two halves into thin slices. Now wrap the bacon around the avocado slices and place them on a baking tray, which you have previously covered with baking paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 180°C until crispy. When cooled, these avocado chips are an ideal onthe-go snack.

HOME-MADE & BROUGHT ALONG: STUFFED PICNIC LOAF Recipe for 8 servings: · 1 round or oval farmhouse or crusty bread · 70 g tomato pesto (pesto rosso) · 100 g cucumber · Salt, pepper · 100 g sliced cheese · A handful of basil leaves · 100 g pickled red peppers from a jar · 80 g thin slices of salami · 3 tbsp. olive oil Take the loaf of bread and carefully cut off a flat top.

Scoop out the inside of the bread, leaving a crust edge of approx. 1 cm. Now coat the inside of the loaf of bread with the pesto.

Cut the cucumber in half and remove the ends. Using a slicer, cut the cucumber into very thin slices and

then season them with salt and pepper. Take the red peppers out of the jar and dab until dry. If you like a Mediterranean feel, wash some fresh basil leaves and set these aside ready with the cheese and slices of salami.

Now let the filling begin: thin slices of cucumber, cheese, salami, red pepper, basil and then cucumber again – fill your loaf just the way you like it. At the end, lightly drizzle with olive oil and you’re done!

Use the crust cover you cut off at the beginning (also spread with pesto) to close your loaf and wrap it tightly in foil so that the loaf is compressed. If necessary, place a tin or carton of juice on top to weigh down the bread. Refrigerate overnight, ready to be cut open at your picnic.

Be prepared!

Ask yourself why certain people provoke you, make you sad and drain you of strength, and formulate a strategy to counteract this. For example, have answers ready before a get-together. This makes you less vulnerable, makes you more assured and you can establish better boundaries.

Find a balance You need energy, search for sources. These can be activities such as yoga or meditation, but also other things such as a piece of chocolate per day, or a healthier diet or adequate sleep. What is good for you?

GOOD BIKE MAINTENANCE KEEPS YOUR BIKE STYLISH AND SAFE

Be it after a break for winter or between rides, your boneshaker will always need a little care. With just 5 simple steps, your bike will always be ready for the road.

1. Regularly check tyre pressures to ensure a high ride quality. You can check the condition of your tyres in the process (cracks, dints, or any holes) and replace if necessary.

2. Check the brake pads for wear and change these if worn.

3. Regularly grease the chain to protect it against rust.

Articulated parts and brakes should be oiled regularly too.

4. Check whether the lights work. Faulty lighting should be repaired immediately. Furthermore your bike must have reflectors on it: one white one on the front, a red one at the rear and two yellow ones in the spokes of each wheel (unless your tyres have reflective strips) are mandatory when riding on the road.

5. Clean your bike regularly. Remove dust and dirt with a wet sponge and dry the cleaned areas afterwards.

After cycling in the rain, you should also wipe the chain dry to prevent rust.

Surface rust on the handlebars or other areas? No problem! You can simply remove it with spray-on oil.

Give your bike a longer life by maintaining it regularly.

This means you will have more fun with your pride and joy!
