Lifestyle encompasses all areas of our lives – how we live, the beautiful moments we experience, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the politic views we hold, the vacation we look forward to, and the hairstylist we choose. There is hardly any product, brand, or trend that doesn’t make use of this term. Even the latest developments in the world of sport, fitness, and wellness are part of it. But what does lifestyle really mean, and how does it affect the consumer? Lifestyle is nothing more than the way someone lives their life. Everyone should be able to live their life in the way they see fit, whatever goals they might pursue! That means we decide which lifestyle we choose to adopt. Everyone has the freedom to hold and express their own opinions. But that isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Others’ expectations can be high, and they have an enormous influence on our thoughts, feelings, and life overall. Primarily, lifestyle is formed in our heads. What’s in, what’s out? How far does personal preference go, and where do we succumb to society’s influence? The question is often, who am I, and can I actually afford this lifestyle? One thing is for sure; lifestyle is more a question of your own taste than the amount of money you have – so it is essentially affordable for everyone. Recognizing your personality in a range of brands, offers, and trends, and skilfully setting them in the right light is and will always be a challenge that everyone has to overcome for themselves. So, it is up to you alone to decide what makes you happy and to fill your life with things that make you feel good, add value to your life, and bring you joy. Does my life need to run in a straight line?
Life is like a book. If something bad happens, you don’t just put it down but continue to turn its pages
granted. Write a list of all of your accomplishments so far; it will help to visualize what is going well and boost your motivation!
Full of motivation and inspiration, you make a plan for the life you want to live and the goals you want to achieve. Love, family, career, finances – you’ve thought of everything. You’ve even planned in a buffer for potential obstacles, problems, and bumps in the road. The stupid thing is that your plan is entirely useless because life won’t stick to it. Making a plan and setting goals isn’t a bad idea, but they shouldn’t be set in stone. Reality always turns out differently. Like the plot of a novel – sometimes it takes an unexpected turn, and at others, things become so intertwined that they are impossible to untangle. It is like a book in which we write our own story. This plotline holds everything together and connects the individual chapters in the tale of our life.
Although we sometimes feel like we’ve strayed too far from this plotline, it’s always there, even if we can’t see it. After all, life can be colourful and chaotic. One thing is for sure; there is not always a clear beginning or end to the paths we take. It is often unclear how we even ended up on them, but that is what makes them all the more wonderful. Moving through life without a set plan can be liberating and exciting.
- If something doesn’t work out, then it wasn’t meant to be. Do let it throw you off your path because when one door closes, another opens.
The real reason why people fail to meet their goals and don’t end up living their dream life is not the lack of a plan, but the lack of desire to really do it! They want it – sort of. But it turns out to be far too much hard work, too challenging, too complicated, too (insert adjective here) – and it goes no further than being a dream. What people lack is not a plan but a burning desire. The desire to fulfil a dream is more valuable than a plan because it has the power to overcome all unforeseeable problems and obstacles – but your plan doesn’t.
- Always remember that the main goal is to be happy. So be honest with yourself. There is no point in taking a path to fulfil others’ expectations if it doesn’t work for you. - A large pinch of flexibility makes for true fulfilment in life. So, don’t get to set on a particular goal because then you might miss other things that life has in store for you. Always remember that goals are just a rough plan. - Break up larger goals into smaller parts and treat yourself along the way. - Say goodbye to your comfort zone, and hello to new challenges! Seize opportunities and say yes to things that scare you. They will help you to grow. - Stay away from negative people; they will rob you of valuable energy.

Free - here and now For me, freedom is being in the present moment – not in the past, which I can no longer change, and not in the future, which I can’t predict. When I am truly present in the moment, I feel free – that could be surrounded by my loved ones, on my yoga mat at home, outside in nature, or the middle of the city. As a yoga teacher, my asana and meditation practice give me a valuable tool to find my way back to this feeling of freedom when everyday life gets the better of me with its to-do lists and
deadlines. I feel my yoga mat beneath my feet and experience an immediate sense of release – without high expectations, open to whatever my practice is about to offer me that day. I follow my body and my breath to places that my head didn’t even know I wanted to go. I have no particular destination in mind, just the intention to be present.
Off I go... If possible, I choose a time for my yoga practice when I’m not under any time pressure. And I try to do the same when I head out for a bike ride. Since I teach yoga classes across the city, I spend Page 14
a lot of time on my bike going from A to B – which isn’t always leisurely. So, on the weekend, I take the time to simply jump on my bike and ride. I love heading off without a fixed destination in mind, just a rough direction (and enough water, of course). If the sun is out, I throw my yoga mat on my back, too. This gives me the same feeling of freedom that I experience on my yoga mat. I love feeling the wind on my face and taking in the small details around me – in the moment, here and now, that is freedom.
Wide-legged Forward Fold Variation BENEFITS: Our legs do a lot of the work when cycling. This pose opens and lengthens the hamstrings and inner thighs. The inverted position of the upper body releases tension in the spine, and the arm variation opens the shoulders – ideal after a long ride.
with your feet parallel to each other. Bend your knees slightly and tilt the pelvis forward. Interlace your fingers behind your back and then bend your
elbows. Roll the shoulders up and back, pulling the tips of your shoulder blades and elbows towards each other to open the chest. Maintaining length in the spine and a bend in the knees, slowly hinge at the hips to fold forward. You can now straighten the arms if the shoulders allow. TIP: Although you’re in a forward bend, open the chest as though you were doing a backbend to keep the spine long – even if this means you don’t get quite as close to the ground!
INSTRUCTIONS: Come into a wide stance facing the long side of the mat
3 YOGA POSES TO STRETCH AFTER A BIKE RIDE Twisted Lizard BENEFITS: This pose is an excellent stretch for the hip flexors – an important muscle group for cycling. Furthermore, the pose opens the shoulders and strengthens the muscles in the back, both of which are essential for good posture on and off the bike. INSTRUCTIONS: Come into a low lunge and set your back knee down. Bring the front foot to the edge of the mat and turn the foot out by about 45 degrees.
One-legged Chair Pose BENEFITS: After spending a long time on the saddle, the glutes can get a little sore. This pose is a wonderful way to stretch out those muscles, and you can even do it on a quick pitstop. INSTRUCTIONS: Lift your knee and flex the foot. Place the outer ankle onto the thigh of the standing leg, just above the knee. Bend the standing leg, tilt the pelvis forward and push your hips back. You can hold onto the top leg with your hands for support, use this to push your sternum forward and create a slight curve in the lower back. TIP: Bring the weight into the heel of the standing foot to take any pressure off of the knee. Page 15
Place your hand on your front thigh, roll your shoulder back, and open the chest towards the thigh in a twist. Use the muscles in your back body to pull your shoulder blades towards each other – opening the chest even further and finding a twist in the spine. TIP: Make sure that the toes and the knee of your front leg are pointing in the same direction. Also, press the bottom hand down into the mat to create space in the shoulder.

Have you heard of Calisthenics? The name Calisthenics is made up of the Greek words for „beauty“ and „strength,“ and so could be translated as „beautiful strength.“ The term refers to a form of physical exercise that uses nothing but a person‘s own body weight. Exercises such as the Front Lever, Human Flag, Pistol Squats, or Muscle Ups are just a few of the elements that Calisthenic athletes practice from day to day. Calisthenics is often referred to as the „Street Workout.“

INTERRAILING: RAILWAY ADVENTURE IN EUROPE In times when environmental awareness is thankfully on the rise, and cheap, low-budget flights are increasingly coming under fire (quite rightly, too), rail travel is becoming more and more present. Did you know that there’s a rail ticket you can use to explore 31 European countries?
In 2018, the EU even started an initiative to regularly give away several thousand of these tickets to young Europeans who have just turned 18. And even if you don’t win one, these tickets provide an excellent and environmentally friendly opportunity for teenagers and young adults between 12 and 27 years old to explore Europe and experience a new feeling of freedom at the same time. The tickets allow passengers to travel with a range of high-speed trains, night trains, regional trains, and panorama trains within a set period. When selecting one of the rail passes, travellers are required to enter the exact number of days they will be travelling. They are Page 42
then able to travel with various railway companies on those days. The ticket gives passengers a great deal of freedom and flexibility, as they can define travel days individually. This way, they can decide spontaneously if they want to spend a few extra days in a place they really like. At the same time, trains offer a high degree of comfort, and it’s a great way to meet people, too.
A month in Europe I myself went on a one-month trip around Europe during my second semester at university, and still rave about this railway adventure, even today. We visited a total of 10 different cities in Western and Southern Europe and tried out almost every type of train our ticket allowed us to – long-distance, regional, night train, you name it. We slept in tents on camping sites, in hostels and, of course, in sleeping cars on trains. This suited our small budget and also gave us a lot of flexibility when it came to bookings and reservations. Spending the night on the train in a sleeping car is a particularly smart way of using travel time effectively and saving accommodation costs too. You fall asleep, chug along through the night, and when you wake up, you’re already at your next destination.
Travel connects During our trip, my friends and I met lots of new people from all over the world; after all, travel connects. For example, we became acquainted with an older couple from Bulgaria, when they were staying in the tent next to us in Amsterdam. Coincidentally, we met again in front of the European Parliament in Brussels, and right away, they invited us to visit them in
Bulgaria during our trip. We also meet some Canadians in Paris, with whom we then explored the Louvre and Palace of Versailles before drinking a glass of wine or two beneath the Eifel Tower. In Barcelona, we painted the town red with a group of Austrians, after we had just spent time exploring San Sebastian
and Pamplona with a brother and sister from the US. And even in France, more precisely Carcassonne and Montpellier, it didn’t take long for us to get talking to locals. All in all, it was a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the boundless freedom allowed by the EU and, above all, broaden our own horizons.
Taking your bike along for the ride? In case you’re thinking about taking your two-wheeled steed along for the ride, you should know that the rules for taking bikes differ from country to country and from train to train. A set method for time management is the name of the game when it comes to planning and structuring our everyday lives more effectively. But we aren’t necessarily born with this ability. Luckily, there are a few tricks that we can learn. With the right time management tools, you can take the load off yourself and your schedule.

Digital or analogue? Opinions tend to differ on this question. After all, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Whether digital or analogue, use the method that works best for you. If lost notes and missed appointments drive you crazy, digital is probably your best option, e.g., using apps such as Todoist, Wunderlist, or Evernote. Or if you are a bit more old school and you love the feel of paper under your fingertips as though you were holding time in your hands, writing by hand could spark creativity and make brainstorming easier. Break up your tasks When it comes to particularly arduous or complex tasks, we often feel like we’re standing in front of a huge mountain that’s impossible to surmount, and it can be frustrating. In such cases, it makes sense to split time-consuming tasks up into small steps. Set yourself a deadline The more time we have to complete a task, the more we drag our feet. Luckily, you can do something about it – set a deadline! For each task you have, give yourself a realistic window of time to complete it. You’ll notice that you work much more efficiently when under a little time pressure.

Set clear goals, write them down, and don’t forget the best goals are the ones that give you a sense of joy while pursuing them. Forget perfectionism If you try to do everything perfectly, you’ll never be happy with what you do. This also prevents you from ever truly completing a project. Try keeping the following sentence in mind: “Done is better than perfect.” Establish order Have you ever taken a moment to think about how much time you spend looking for documents, information, or other objects? A tidy workspace can help a lot, keeping things in order is half the battle.

Just don’t do anything wrong – there are very few countries where there is such a stigma around mistakes as Germany. But why? It is our culture that is continuously telling us that mistakes are bad and that we have to be perfect. After all, every mistake we make is put down to us to not being intelligent, likeable, or empathetic enough. In our society, mistakes are punished with inferiority complexes, feelings of guilt, and the fear of making more mistakes. Being scared to make mistakes has a negative impact on our
lives and in the worst cases, can even leave us unable to act at all. If you’re always scared to do something wrong, you won’t dare to take anything significant. The consequence is that we lose the courage to follow our dreams.
