Harrogate Theatre has its own drama season this autumn, with three fantastic back-to-back classics, The Signalman, Black Tie Ball and Bedroom Farce, over a three-week period in September. The Signalman is adapted from Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story about a railway signal man haunted by visions of impending disasters. Then we have a brace of plays by two of the world’s most performed living playwrights. By turns satirical and touching, John Godber focuses his laser sharp gaze onto the Black Tie Ball, told in his signature visceral style. Alan Ayckbourn’s chaotic comedy, Bedroom Farce is set in three bedrooms, as four couples struggle with the ups and downs of their rocky relationships and is largely regarded as a beautifully crafted masterpiece. Do look out for the work of all our community groups – they make great choices for their productions. In October we have Goodnight Mister Tom presented by Harrogate Dramatic Society, which is set in 1939 and adapted from the novel by Michelle Magorian. Harrogate St Andrew’s Players present a contemporary musical classic, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae, which is centred around a coming-of-age story on a council estate in Sheffield.
There are plenty of top acts in the annual Comedy Festival including Jack Dee, Ardal O'Hanlon, Suzi Ruffell, Maisie Adam and Dead Ringers. Down at the Royal Hall and HCC there is our usual eclectic mix of music and popular entertainment, and the annual festive offering this Christmas is Jack and the Beanstalk, with familiar faces returning as well as some new ones.
Lastly, Harrogate Theatre’s 125th birthday celebrations are still ongoing and will carry through into the new year. Please do pay a visit and donate whatever you can, it really makes a huge difference to the survival of the theatre.
We hope to see you soon!

In January, we launched our £125,000 fundraising campaign to mark an extraordinary milestone – 125 years of Harrogate Theatre. While audiences often see packed houses and standing ovations, what’s less visible is the financial reality behind the curtain. On average, only 20% of ticket sales actually comes back to the theatre. That 20% is all we have to cover the full cost of running a historic arts venue, from programming shows, marketing and box office services, to keeping our bars open, hiring skilled technicians, replacing aging equipment and delivering meaningful community outreach.
In today’s climate of rising costs and reduced funding for the arts, 20% isn't enough. That’s why your support is more important than ever. Raising £125,000 this year will help safeguard the future of Harrogate Theatre, ensuring we can continue to create unforgettable experiences for generations to come. We’re already partway through
