Welcome to the Harrogate Music Festival 2016 Preview Guide To celebrate Harrogate International Festivals’ 50th Anniversary, we will be presenting a year filled with more concerts and events than ever before, based on our theme of Discover, Explore, Experiment. Here is a taste of what we have in store for you this summer. HIF PRESENTS… In this special celebratory year, Harrogate International Festivals presents some of the world’s greatest musicians in a series of pre-Festival events.

Artist in Residence: John Wilson Festival favourites, The John Wilson Orchestra, return to Harrogate for a weekend of events featuring the world famous conductor, who specialises in music for the small and big screens, as well as Big Band jazz and light music. In partnership with Yorkshire Festival.

In Conversation with John Wilson Friday 1st July | Cairn Hotel | 7.30pm Hear from John Wilson, the man behind the orchestra, as he talks to British music journalist Ed Seckerson about his passion for film music – from the restoration of scores for classic musicals, through to arrangements for modern films that have earned him a Grammy nomination. Tickets: £15

John Wilson Orchestra: Gershwin in Hollywood Saturday 2nd July | Royal Hall | 8pm One of the fastest selling acts of the Festival, The John Wilson Orchestra swing back into town with a celebration of Gershwin’s irresistible tunes from classic Hollywood movies. Afternoon Tea Dance, with the John Wilson Orchestra Sunday 3rd July | Royal Hall | 3.30pm

Nicola Benedetti joins one of Europe’s leading chamber orchestras to perform a programme of music by Mozart, the composer that shaped classical music as we know it. This event also features a pre-concert talk - Mozart and his mental health: An exploration of the theories surrounding the man behind the music. Van Morrison Thursday 9th June Harrogate International Centre | 8.00pm Support Act | 6.30pm With one of the most revered catalogues in music history and unparalleled talents as composer, singer and performer, Van Morrison returns to Harrogate with his unique blend of blues, country, soul, jazz and Celtic folk. BBC NGA Showcase Thursday 7th July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm BBC New Generation Artists Narek Hakhnazaryan (cello), Pavel Kolesnikov (piano) & Annelien Van Wauwe (clarinet) perform a selection of chamber music for a special BBC Radio 3 broadcast. Tickets: £22, £19, £15 Boxes: £66, £57

Einstein’s Universe

Professor Brian Foster is joined by violinist Jack Liebeck to present a musical lecture, exploring Einstein’s life and involvement with music and how his ideas have shaped our concepts of space, time and the evolution of the Universe. Tickets: £12

Pack a picnic and head to the glorious setting of RHS Harlow Carr Gardens, as Oddsocks Productions present their steampunk adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. A treat for all the family! Tickets: £17, £10, £3

Narrated by English actor, Simon Callow, The World Encompassed tells the tale of Sir Frances Drake’s perilous circumnavigation of the globe with a through-composed piece of music, featuring original 16th century compositions melded with contemporary offerings by Orlando Gough. Tickets: £21

Black Dyke Band Sunday 10th July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm Pre-Concert Talk | 6.30pm The world’s most famous brass band return to Harrogate with a programme featuring well-known film music as well as a UK premier by composer Edward Gregson. Plus, join Principal Conductor, Dr Nicolas J. Childs, for a free pre-concert talk exploring the band’s 160 years of rich musical history. In a unique programme presented cabaret style, wine critic and writer Oz Clarke and Armonico Consort investigate the spurious links between wine from across the world and the music of the baroque. Tickets: £35. Price includes four glasses of wine chosen to accompany the performance.

Angel City Chorale Sunday 17th July | Royal Hall | 7.30pm Pre-Concert Talk | 6.30pm The Los Angeles vocal ensemble is joined by Prima Vocal Ensemble & the Mowbray Orchestra to present a musical extravaganza for the whole family, featuring the world premier of Drop in the Ocean, a special commission by Grammy Award winning composer Christopher Tin - plus a pre-concert talk by the composer himself.
