Howard Marks Radio 4’s Mark Lawson meets a man whose life story proves reality is always stranger than fiction. During the mid1980s, Howard Marks had 43 aliases, 89 phone lines, and 25 companies trading throughout the world. Bars, recording studios, offshore banks: all were moneylaundering vehicles serving the core activity: dope dealing.

A world-wide operation by the Drug Enforcement Agency saw him busted and sentenced to 25 years in a US prison. He was released on parole in 1995. His autobiography Mr Nice is now a cultclassic and was recently adapted for film. 2011 sees the release of Marks’ first novel, Sympathy For The Devil.

alibi’s Search for a New Crime Writer Winner’s Reception Earlier this year the crime drama channel alibi teamed up with publishers HarperCollins, TV Times and the Festival to search out the crime writers of the future by asking aspiring authors to submit their own short stories. The competition closed on 1 May 2011 and eight finalists chosen from the hundreds of entries.
