After the announcement that Qatar would host the 2022 FIFA World Cup way back in 2018, we were honoured to discover that Harrod Sport had been chosen to supply every stadium hosting the matches at the tournament with our FIFA approved, Stadium PRO Goals.

We are immensely proud to say that for the first time in World Cup history, the football goals used during this tournament of 32 countries have been FIFA approved and have been produced by Harrod Sport. We worked closely with FIFA, the main contractors and distributors, as well as directly with competition delegates to supply goals to all eight tournament stadiums. In total, 15 x 40 ft containers were shipped and over 400 goals were delivered to the 32 high-profile training venues across Qatar. Overall, our equipment was housed on 68 training pitches - quite a feat!

Over three million supporters visited Qatar during the tournament, and a further five billion tuned in to watch the games over its four-week duration and so this accolade has made a truly momentous occasion for our longestablished, family-run company.

MAJOR FOOTBALL EVENTS

We were so delighted that our FIFA approved goalposts took centre stage at all 10 stadiums during the record-breaking FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 hosted in Australia & New Zealand. During 2022 we gained FIFA approved status for our 4G Stadium PRO Goal Package and were the supplier of choice for UEFA’s Women’s Euro 2022. Following on from this (and our English ladies success!), we were then thrilled to be chosen to supply a further 20 sets of our FIFA Quality Goals to each of the 10 stadiums hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. This was the first Women’s World Cup with more than one host nation and the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere and with now 32 teams represented, it was also the largest. A record 1.7 million tickets were sold for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making it the highestattended event in the history of the women’s sport, and therefore no wonder that Harrod Sport were very proud to supply such a prestigious tournament.

Upon winning the contract, Sports Sales & Marketing Director Kevin Utton said: “It’s again been a great effort by the team to secure and fulfil another major event contract. The Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand promises to be an amazing event. As a company, we will be supporting the England team to hopefully secure another amazing result following their success at the 2022 Euros. Both events featured our Stadium Pro football goals, and we will be hoping Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses can find the target just as accurately as they did at the Euros. We will certainly celebrate every England goal that hits the back of the Harrod Sport net”. Shipping to the other side of the world takes copious amounts of organisation and planning, and during April 2023 Harrod Sport sent two 40ft containers of equipment to achieve delivery in time for the tournament kick off on the 20th July.

However, what has become increasingly poignant in the last five years is the ongoing development and admiration of women’s sport! We were incredibly proud to have supplied products to the UEFA Women’s Euros 2022 and honoured to have won another contract to supply products to the FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand. These women are inspirational, and I hope the development of women’s football continues to thrive and get the media attention it deserves.”

MAJOR OLYMPIC GAMES EVENTS

Harrod Sport were so proud to be sole supplier to the iconic London 2012 Olympic Games for goals, nets and shelters for all football, hockey, Paralympic football and wheelchair rugby events. This success has continued through all Olympic Games right up to Tokyo 2020.

GAMES Through our close relationship with the Federation of International Hockey and England Hockey, we were invited to apply as an official Olympic supplier with the challenge to provide products that improved upon the high standards of the Beijing 2008 Games. After winning the contract, our aim was to provide a product range which exceeded all expectations.

Harrod Sport most recently supplied equipment to the Tokyo Olympics over two separate contracts. One commercial contract with their Japanese distributors for bespoke team shelters and a separate sole supplier agreement directly with the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG) for hockey goals and nets.

Harrod Sport has since become the Olympic supplier of choice due to their exceptional craftsmanship, extensive industry experience, and unwavering commitment to meeting specific Olympic requirements. Their ability to deliver superior, tailormade sports equipment while maintaining impeccable quality and reliability sets them apart.

The Team Shelters were built with Japan’s hot and humid summer temperatures in mind, often reaching highs of over 30°, it was important that all athletes were kept cool during matches. The Design Team at Harrod developed bronzed windows that offered enough tint to reflect the sun’s rays and provide cooler temperatures inside. Internal

blinds and curtains were also installed to offer further protection for the athletes. It was also a requirement that the shelters were portable and a bespoke design meant they could house the players appropriately but could also be dismantled for quick and easy storage indoors in case of any typhoon warnings.

MAJOR COMMONWEALTH EVENTS

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games -

the whole nation inspired! The 22nd Commonwealth Games saw 6,500 athletes competing across 19 sports, with Harrod Sport proudly supplying equipment for hockey, netball, and Rugby Sevens. Harrod Sport has a proud history of supplying sporting equipment to the Commonwealth Games, previously supplying Manchester 2002, Delhi 2010, and Glasgow 2014, and Director of Sport Kevin Utton said: “We are delighted to be able to add Birmingham 2022 to the collection.” We were even more thrilled to see the England women secure a memorable win over Australia for their first ever Commonwealth Games Gold in the hockey as well as the England men winning a third Commonwealth bronze in a row for an electrifying win against South Africa. The women’s win was 24 years in the making with Flora Peel securing both goals in the Harrod Sport FIH Class 1 Weighted Hockey Goals meaning a 2-1 win against Australia. The victory was a momentous occasion for the players and another triumph for women’s sport after the Lionesses Euros win in 2022. Hollie Pearne-Webb described the event as ‘hugely inspirational’ and to be a part of the women’s team sport movement was

a ‘privilege and an honour to be a part of’ (England Hockey, 2022). Kate Pasque, Sales and Marketing Executive at Harrod Sport, touched on the event: “We’re over the moon for everybody involved with England Hockey, especially to the women’s team who have made history by winning the gold. With what the Lionesses achieved, and now England Women winning the gold in hockey, and England Roses only just missing out on a bronze in netball, it is hugely inspirational to the entire country, especially the young girls watching on aspiring to be like their heroes.” Not only this but Harrod Sport, along with the rest of the country, were overjoyed to see the Roses play in the bronze match for the netball, for which they supplied their International netball posts. However, England were left empty handed following a 48-55 loss following a tough second quarter against the current world champions, New Zealand’s Silver Ferns. The Lionesses also did themselves proud again in the 2023 World Cup, making it all the way to the final.

MAJOR RUGBY EVENTS

“The birthplace of rugby in Japan” Our insight into Yokohama Stadium The Rugby World Cup Final 2019 was held in the International Stadium Yokohama. This remarkable venue has a bespoke Bolt-Down Bottom Hinge System, which is similar to the design for the ‘Sliding Pitch’ in the Sapporo Dome.

Also, our unique Winched Rugby Lifters were used at all World Cup venues to ensure that the 17m posts could be erected without the use of any powered vehicles or lifting system. It was also imperative these posts satisfied earthquake requirements.

Harrod Sport’s Design Team worked closely with our Japanese distributor; Kofu Field Co. Ltd to create these innovative designs ready for the tournament. The biggest challenge encountered in the Yokohama Stadium was that there had previously been a smaller set of rugby posts in place.

In Japan, it is stated in the Building Standards Act that when you want to install any permanent or nonpermanent architectural buildings/ objects that exceed the height of 15m, the owner needs to submit the building certification to the government and that includes tiresome data of the installation site and structure calculation data, CAD drawings (with detail materials and dimensions stated) of the installed building/object.

So, we had to develop something that could be installed over the original sockets, but with the added complication of needing to increase the foundation strength to cater for the greater forces imposed by the 17m tall posts. This was overcome by designing the Bolt-Down Hinge Assembly installed with six M20 Stainless Steel Indented Foundation Bolts at each upright.

If we had not provided the adequate information and drawings, we would have not been allowed to install 17m rugby posts in Japan. Not forgetting, all drawings and structural analysis documentation needed to be interpreted into Japanese for approval by the Japanese Government!

Once the team return from the first visit, a more detailed report on parts required and labour costs involved will be sent across to the customer.
