Scattered throughout Harrison County are communities ranging from the largest, Clarksburg, which is the seat of county government, to several smaller municipalities and unincorporated towns. These towns, along with the rural areas which connect them, are home to nearly 67,000 residents.
Proud to call Salem home, 1,468 residents enjoy a variety of businesses and services in this university town that draws crowds to its Apple Butter Festival and to Fort New Salem, representative of early log settlements.
The Town of Nutter Fort received its name from the Nutter family, who were of ScotchEnglish descent. Incorporated in 1923, Nutter Fort is now home to over 1,464 residents. There is a large park located near the southern end of town with several lighted baseball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts pavilions, playground equipment and a walking trail. There are six churches located within the community and the town is home to the West Virginia Blackberry Festival. The town has round the clock police protection and volunteer fire department. The town provides water, sewer and garbage service for the community.
City of Stonewood (Pop. 1,687) residents enjoy three parks with playgrounds, tennis courts, horseshoe pitching courts and basketball courts. A smalltown community atmosphere within minutes of Clarksburg, the county seat, major shopping, medical and all the services necessary for convenient living. The City of Stonewood was incorporated on December 17, 1947; making 2022 their 75th Anniversary. The City offers full-time police protection, water distribution, wastewater treatment, garbage service and public works. The Stonewood Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection.
Founded in 1818, this quiet, friendly residential town of 599 citizens is one of the oldest towns in the county. Located one mile from South Harrison High School, West Milford has an excellent grade school located within the community.
More than 494 people choose the pretty town of Lost Creek for their homes. Its location along Interstate 79 makes it an easy commute to the business and industrial sites nearby. The town is named for an early settler who lost his life by the creek that runs through the area.

Community
This town’s popular volunteer fire station is the site for many community activities.
Originally called River Port, this is home to more than 831 residents. It became Lumberport from the fact that logs were floated on rafts to Pittsburgh. Today, the very important Harrison Power Station, which provides electricity to much of the northeast, is located between Lumberport and Shinnston.
Established in 1778, the City of Shinnston combines a proud history, a solid present, and an exciting future to Harrison County. Shinnston’s 2,068 residents enjoy many of the recreational and educational opportunities found in large cities but with safety and adorability of a small town making it a perfect place to grow. The city is the only one in the state to be recognized five times as a “Playful City USA,” underscoring the commitment to expanding recreational opportunities.
Lincoln High School’s campus is home to tennis courts available for public use. Ferguson Memorial Park has one of the most affordable swimming facilities in the area, along with several pavilions that can be rented for parties, professional-grade covered bocce courts, horse shoe pits, corn hole, basketball, and three playgrounds, including the revolutionary portable “Imagination Playground” that allows kids to build their own play experience. The park is also home to a brand new performance center which serves as the home for the Shinnston Community Band and the Summer Theatre in the Park series along with other cultural performances and programs.
Downtown is anchored by several small specialty shops that give Shinnston a unique feel and atmosphere. This “Award Winning Blueprint Community” is perfect for those individuals looking for that small town charm, with easy access to larger areas. In Shinnston you’ll find low crime rates, great schools and a welcoming atmosphere. So, welcome home to the City of Shinnston. Come and visit…..you’ll want to stay!
Welcome to Clarksburg, West Virginia, where 16,062 citizens call home. The hillsides of this “Mountaineer Country” offer a beautiful seasonal backdrop where history meets “high tech.” As the largest city and County seat of Harrison County, it offers citizens a rich mix of retail, industrial, professional and governmental services and one of the best preserved historical downtowns in the State. During the 1990’s and into the 21st century, Clarksburg experienced an unprecedented growth in projects that will continue to keep the city a main economic and employment center in the future.
In the historic district, Fairmont State University opened a large Clarksburg campus serving approximately 1,400 students each week. This 36,000 square foot facility continues to be a focal point of higher education in the greater Clarksburg area as it now is home, to Pierpont Community College. The Clarksburg Federal Building opened in 1999, gathering all federal agencies, such as Social Security Administration and GSA in the city with approximately 250 employees into a 3-story building. In 2016, the State of WV opened a State Office Building Complex that houses multiple state agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, DHHR, State Tax & Revenue and several others. This complex is home to approximately 300 employees and over 400 visitors per day. Clarksburg has also created one of the largest continuous outdoor power centers in the state— East Pointe and New Pointe are home to many large and small retailers, hotels, banks, and a health service facility. This area continues to grow at a rapid rate.
The City of Bridgeport (Pop. 9,336) is located conveniently in North Central West Virginia, two hours north of the State Capital, Charleston, WV, and two hours south of Pittsburgh, PA. The city’s rich heritage has its earliest beginnings in the 1750’s when it was still a part of Virginia. It was the home of Benjamin Wilson, a distinguished frontiersman, and Joseph Johnson, the only Governor of Virginia from west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is also the birthplace of Michael Late Benedum, oil “wildcatter,” philanthropist and founder of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. As a small town, Bridgeport provides a vignette of the American Economy. Its history is a story of steady advancement, beautiful homes, great city services, the finest of schools, and unequaled recreational facilities. Located at the intersection of US Route 50 east and west, and Interstate 79 north and south, coupled with the recent expansion at Charles Pointe and White Oaks, makes the city a choice location for new businesses, small industries, supply and retail businesses. Throughout all of its growth, the residents of Bridgeport have managed to maintain the small community atmosphere. The community is very family-oriented and works together to provide advantages to area youth. We are fortunate to have many community organizations and businesses that volunteer their time, expertise, and money to meet the needs of our diverse community.
The medical community in Clarksburg is strong and continues to grow. In addition, Clarksburg has several urgent care facilities and is the home of Highland-Clarksburg Hospital. The Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center serves veterans from 26 counties in West Virginia and portions of three adjacent states. In late-2007, the new Veterans Nursing Home was completed with a 120-bed capacity and employing a staff of 190.
Clarksburg is truly a city that enjoys the amenities of larger cities but with the advantages of a small, hometown community. The members of the Clarksburg City Council found it fitting to adopt the slogan “Proud Past…Unlimited Future.” We think you’ll agree when you choose to live, work or play in our community.
