PUBLISHER'S THOUGHTS BY BERNARD S HARRISON, JR.

I recently read an article in The New York Times that Americans spend more money yearly on gambling or gaming than on groceries, unbelievable! The Bible leads my thinking and serves as a reminder that the Bible is the highest moral standard ever known, and since it reveals the will of the God who created us all, we should appeal to it as the supreme standard (2 Tim. 3:16,17; 1 Cor. 14:37; John 17:17; Matt. 7:21-27 Gambling refers to a wager or bet in which each player agrees to risk losing some material possession to other players in exchange for the chance to win the possessions of other players without compensation to the loser, the winner(s) and loser(s) being determined by the outcome of a game. With that said, the question is are all the types of gambling such as lotteries, church sponsored bingo and raffles, sports betting, casino gambling and bazaar fair activities like “spin the wheel" are all equal. Even if small amounts of money are involved, such activities still violate Biblical principles. Further, they establish a precedent that makes it impossible for one to consistently object to other people's gambling. Where do you draw the line and say, "This much money risked is all right, but any more is immoral?" The word "gamble" is not found in the Bible, yet the practice violates Biblical principles regardless of the amount of money involved.

The Bible authorizes only three morally legitimate ways for money or possessions to pass from one owner to another. They are the law of labor or work ethic, The law of exchange ( if the exchange is equally fair) and The law of giving. Gambling fits none of them. I could explore each with biblical documents but That might take longer than a debate between President Trump and DNC candidate Biden. This leads me to the current political season and referendum of the proposed casino in Norfolk and Portsmouth. If you ask for my two cents, I would say "If you don’t stand on God’s word you’ll fall for anything the devil puts in front of you ." Sure, there are vital concerns put forward by the local grass root organizations opposing the casino in Norfolk. The bible says “ No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” There has been discussion about increased jobs, revenue, and a better quality of life, but at what cost? Increased domestic violence in the home, other insidious elements seeps into our communities like prostitution, crime and drug and alcohol abuse. So, I say No to the casino vote in both cities. We have more to lose than a cosmopolitan skyline!

Bernard S Harrison ,Jr.

“Seek the shalom (welfare or wellbeing) of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive and pray to the LORD for it; for in the shalom of it shall you have shalom.” Jeremiah 29:7

.1 Timothy 6:10 declares that "the love of money is the root of all evil." Therefore, the enticement of gambling and playing the lottery obviously comes under these texts. What people need is to have more love for God than themselves! To gamble is to bet on you, not God... 1ST EMAIL BLAST

MORAL WRITTEN BY RONALD J ATKINSON So, here is our question. Does a Casino in downtown Norfolk bring God’s shalom to Norfolk and the 757? The answer to this question is a resounding NO. Israel is in captivity in Babylon when the above statement is made in the Book of Jeremiah. So, life is not good for them. Life may not be good for the Christ follower or the citizen of Norfolk but that is no reason to gamble your life away and worse than that, turn away from the living God. One should be turning towards Him, not away. To gamble is to make money your God . This is your source of provision. Abba or Father means source. Folks, we just can’t have two sources. Who would rather gamble to make ends meet than to work to make ends meet? For the Christian this should not be a difficult question. Why? A Casino promotes gaming or gambling. It’s a moral issue, plain and simple. 1. The 10th commandment found in Exodus 20:17 talks about coveting which is the root of most of our problems. 2. What is one of the reasons that people gamble and play the lottery? They covet money, quick and easy.

Vote NO for the Casino! 3. Scripture also encourages us to stay away from attempts to “get rich quick.” (He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Gambling, most definite is focused on the love of money and undeniably tempts people with the promise of quick and easy riches.

robbery? Of course not. Neither does God need or want money that was “stolen” from the poor in the temptation for riches. "But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” Amos 5:24

EDUCATION

The covenant of marriage is weakened when an outside source mitigates the order of the family. The father is responsible for the well-being of the family as its provider. Regardless of our culture’s norm today, the father has this charge, not the wife. She can come alongside but at the end of the day, it’s the father’s responsibility. There are many shortcuts that have become culturally acceptable: dual family income, debt driven budgets, etc. but at the end of the day or 60 years - the family suffers. In 1960 over 61% of African American families were two headed households, 2008, 32%. (Dawne Mouzon/Rutgers University). According to Black Demographics in 2016, 29% African Americans were married. This yields less wealth in the African American community. Please let’s stop drinking the Koolaide, buying the T-Shirts and bag of chips. Live within the means by which one earns, then we don’t have to gamble. God’s way yields wealth over time not overnight.

VOTE NO for the Casino! Does this make sense? Do you think this makes sense to God, when He has promised the Christ Follower, He would supply all of our need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus? The world offers other options, we can have it both ways. This Is not Burger King – 2 for 1 . . . or Have it your way. Proverbs 14:11 says, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.” God is sovereign and will provide for the needs of the church through honest means. Would God be honored by receiving donated drug money or money stolen in a bank

3RD EMAIL BLAST Does gaming/gambling promote Education? With much delusion, proponents position the Casino like the Lottery, “It’s a good source of income for our schools. Question, does the end justify the means? To support the Casino says, “Play the slot machine Johnny if you want to attend college: buy books, pay tuition, purchase a car, etc. What Christ follower who is a parent would give this counsel to your child? Seeking the Shalom (welfare/wellbeing) of your city means engage the educational process of your city as a SERVANT, not a gambler: serve on the PTA, assist campuses with your skills, become an informed citizen around topics (like the Casino) that directly and indirectly impact the culture on our campuses. The Christ follower must not be on the sideline on this issue but be front and center within and without. Learning there is a kingdom economy and that you can choose to operate from that platform are essential to making a difference in your community. You’re not only engaged, but you’re a living example of one who chooses to trust entirely in the Lord! The Holocaust occurred because the silence was deafening. Let your voice be heard and seen. Why? ? The Casino undergirds values that are not consistent with Biblical living. So, choosing any system other than Father’s kingdom system is to show you prefer the almighty dollar over Almighty God!

Vote NO for the Casino. Matthew 6:24 proclaims, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

BY BERNARDS HARRISON,JR. IMAGES: JOANNA ATKINSON t gdom Lile magazine invited a group of spirited urban professional from the 757 to discuss how race affected their ability to do business in Hampton Roads. Tamera Adams, Daryl Anderson, Baron Barnes, Dexter Bridgeman, Joseph Campbell, Patrice Curtis, Becky Dorsey, Nikoa Evans, Jason Gil, Duval James, Ted Tedia, Michelle Jordan, Rodney Wortham, Mikki Wosencroft participated in our open forum ( five other professionals declined to be named). The group ranged in age from 26 to 41 and represented non-profit organizations, financial services, publishing/media, business consulting, computing and education. The group agreed to talk candidly about the subjects of race on the condition that their place of business not be revealed and that no statement be directly attributed to any one person to minimize the risk of retalization

THE RACE QUESTION

Will your race affect your career aspirations? Our panelist seemed to think it would have little or no effect on theirs. Although they all acknowledge that their are many forms of bias that blacks must overcome, the majority refuse to believe that bias would be strong enough to prevent them from reaching their goals. There were three major reasons for their optimism. 1) Their strong believe in the Lord and his directing of their paths, 2) Confidence that they have the education and {God Given) talent to compete against anyone. 3) The effect of the shifting demographics of the American population will have on the economy.

Since it is projected that minority groups will become majority in this country during this century, the effect od muti-cultural and ethnic markets on the economy can no longer be ignored. In The Bible , the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus declares that in the world to come, "The last shall be first and the first last.' "With the browning of America, anything dealing with advertising and minority markets is where the money will be." the media representative said. Once thought of as a niche market will offer many more opportunities. Most in the room agreed that they have been through some type of discrimination, and actual it's been going on for four hundred plus years.

Assimilation or Maintain

One of the biggest problems blacks have face in the workplace is how to assimilation into the culture without losing their black identity. Our panel was sharply divided on which approach bears the best fruit; assimilating into a white dominated corporate culture or aggressively maintaining a black identity within a white dominated office. Highlighting the office difficulties of working in an all white environment, a media representative explained her frustration: "i worked an a local station where I'm the only black person there, I was brought in to replace a black person who left the position. We all have cultural differences. They have things that i'm not familiar with,

The Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C. exhibits "The Slave Bible: Let the Story Be Told," in response to the amount of attention visitors gave the artifact. This Bible is intended to give people a chance 'to reflect' and visitors are being encouraged to write down their reactions with prompts from the museum such as "What questions does the Slave Bible raise about how the Bible is used today?" The Slave Bible omitted 90 percent of the Old Testament and 50 percent of the New Testament. This leads to the question, why were the Bibles, that were given to the slave omitted most of the content?

Most of the Old Testament is missing, and only about half of the New Testament remains. The reason? So that the enslaved Africans in the Caribbean islands of Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua could not read or read into anything that might incite them to rebel. Caribbeans had long been leery of missionaries and could have demanded that they only teach enslaved people certain parts of the Bible. But some missionaries may have also believed that it was only appropriate to teach enslaved people excerpts that reinforced their enslaved status.

COVID ..1 9 lmpaot on Christian Businesses By: Joanna Atkinson Photography: Ronald Atkinson

In March 2020, life as we once knew in America changed. Due to COVID-19 businesses closed, hours in business were reduced, schools moved on-line, and millions of people lost their jobs. According to the Washington Post, over 100,000 small businesses have closed permanently due to the pandemic.

"I went into survival mode," Forbes claimed. His business was closed and at that time there were unknown factors regarding coronavirus; so, he moved his business to cutting hair outside in his backyard. He took one customer an hour. Finally, he was able to reopen his barbershop in early June.

Fast forward about four months later, America is recovering from the effects of the pandemic especially small business owners. Many had to close their doors in March due to the shut down orders in various states.

As for Sung Park, his story was different. In April 2001, his family opened Beauty & Hair Discount in Virginia Beach, VA. When coronavirus swept in the area, he was able to remain open. T he key difference was that he no longer had part-time employees and had to be responsible to run the business six days a week. "I had to work more than ever before," Park commented.

Business owners, Steven Forbes and Sung Park testify that God has sustained them during the pandemic. Steven is the owner of the Master Touch Barber Shop, located in Chesapeake, VA that has been operating since August 1995. On March 23 he had to close down his barbershop business.

However, God has been faithful to Steven and Sung in the midst of uncertainty that looms over our Nation. Both find themselves relying on God.

we are honest with ourselves, we do not like to wait. However, take pleasure in knowing that you are not alone. In fac t, waiting will not only tell you that you are alone, it will cause you to become frustrated in the midst thereof. Waiting tends to tell us all types deceptive things beginning with, "this only happens to me." Well, if waiting only happened to you there would be no traffic jams and there would never be any long lines at Wal mart. Let me encourage you with this c onc ept, we all had to wait to be born. The only difference is we did not know that while we were waiting to be born, we were also being developed. Often, we see waiting as a burden or a daunting task. When truth be told we should all see it as a chance to develop our faith in Christ. Waiting will expose your perspective and if not careful, waiting will spawn choices that are sometimes irrational, ineffective, and often dangerous. But God. 'Stay tuned' is a term I first remember reading across my television sc reen during in intermission of cartoons at the age of 5. I did not want to stay tuned I wanted what I wanted, when I wanted, c ried, and complained when I did not get it. The problem with that is one, that did not move the cartoon to meet any faster. Two, I felt worse after the crying than I I did prior to c rying. I will say this, some things never change. There are things from my childhood that I have brought into adulthood and continue to face today, and it all began with those cartoons at age 5. I did not want to stay tuned I wanted what I wanted, I wanted, when I wanted, cried, and complained when I did not get it. The problem with that is one, that did not move the cartoon to me any faster.

Two, I felt worse after the crying. I brought those ideas into adulthood and continue to face it today, and it all began with those cartoons at age 5. There are things you have brought over from your childhood into adulthood, into your marriage, that executive position at your company and into your parenting, why? Because you and I do not like waiting.

Don't miss your appointment! The Holy Spirit spoke to me one day in prayer and said, "Stay tuned means to wait." We all need to wait for the release of the holy spirit, he is the leader. But first we must try to spend time with the holy spirit that lives on the inside of us all (1 Car. 3:16). Stay tuned for the release of the holy spirit. When I have been released by the holy spirit that means God has gone before me and made my crooked paths straight and lit up my dark days. Be mindful that there is always someone tied to the other end of your blessing. .God may be working on the other person to make a move in your favor. Let me say it like this, God is working on our behalf to open that door to your dream job, however someone may have to be promoted (or removed) for that door to open.

LIFE I JOURNEY- PERSONAL ANECDOTE

we are honest with ourselves, we do not like to wait.

I know a young man who was unemployed for
