I am passionate about re-using materials that already exist.

I feel everything has become so fast paced, it’s much easier to replace before we consider repurposing. As a designer I would like to encourage a shift in how we can work with these materials before they end up in landfill.

A lot of the materials I utilise are nylon (from tents), Cotton t-shirts and basic jackets, which was dead stock left behind and donated by independent clothing brands.

ACTION

Glastonbury 2015 was the first big music festival I ever attended. This was when my eyes were first exposed to how much waste was left in the fields after events. I have been to the event the following years after and I have seen much improvement with their “Leave No Trace” campaign. As well as a lot of actions been made to encourage people to pack up their own camping equipment to take home with them. Spreading lots of awareness and providing rubbish, recycle bins on each campsite.

My target market is focused towards people who are conscious about the planet and are in search for a deeper connection with themselves and the world around them, this is a growing market internationally (Brydges et al., 2020). However, I would also like to target mainstream fashion consumers too, as I feel my designs can send out a message that we can still wear beautiful and welL made fashion without having a harsh effect on the planet

DIGITAL KNIT

In my design process I love to consider texture. I knew I would be incorporating knit into my collection. Knit is something I love to wear as it is warm and offers comfort. The program I used to create my triangular knitted pieces is called ‘All yarns are beautiful.’ This program is on a computer which connects to an electronic knitting machine, this enables creators to create interesting digital knitted patterns.

I chose to work with natural cottons and Tencel natural wool initially. However, when experimenting with my artwork and chosen yarn, I met many challenges on the knitting machine. The machine didn’t seem to agree with these fibres and when following a more complex pattern this resulted in knots of yarn - certainly not the effect I was looking for!

Due to the reasons mentioned I made the decision to work with recycled acrylic blended fibres instead. I have learnt that becoming sustainable is a transitional journey and I would like to further develop my knitting skills and experiment with different fibres after my Master’s degree
