R

eunions are times to reconnect . . . to reconnect with friends, with school, with teachers, and with spirits of youthfulness. Revisiting the grounds where we all began “growing up” allows us to remember once again those principles and activities that helped mold us into the people that we have become.

• Meet on the Library Steps • Campus Tours led by Student Ambassadors

Harpeth Hall has grown too! Our alma mater is not exactly the same place that we knew when we were younger, but now more sophisticated, more mature, more diverse, just as we all are. Therefore, reunions enable meetings of important perspectives, those of graduates looking back and of a school looking forward.

The 2014 Reunion year is a meaningful but bittersweet transitional year when we praise but must also bid farewell to Head of School Ann Teaff, whose accomplishments throughout her tenure have been truly remarkable. Ann’s leadership has ensured that Harpeth Hall continues to be a school of which we graduates remain very proud. Please mark your calendars; I look forward to seeing you May 2nd and 3rd. Evelyn Dickenson Swensson WB ’45

E

velyn Dickenson Swensson is a talented vocalist, pianist, conductor, librettist/lyricist, and composer. She was president of her senior class at Ward-Belmont and received a certificate in piano upon graduation. She went on to complete a BA in Voice and Piano at Hollins University and soon after married Sig, her husband of 62 years. “Ward-Belmont encouraged me to have a happy family, a career, and a helpful place in my community,” Evelyn said. Indeed, there was never a time that Evelyn was not working in some capacity in the musical arts. In the 1970s, she earned a master’s of music degree in conducting and composition from West Chester University. She later served as the Minister of Music in the Peninsula Conference PA and was the first female conductor of both OperaDelaware and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. She was the general director of the OperaDelaware’s Family Opera Theater and has written 13 musicals, most of which she produced, staged, and conducted. She has received numerous composer awards and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women for 50 years of achievement as a composer, conductor, lecturer, pianist, and vocalist. She is currently conductor of Brandywine Pops Orchestra in Wilmington, DE and her autobiography, Notes: My Life with Music, will be published in November, 2014. Evelyn Swensson was a unanimous choice for the Distinguished Alumna Award. Join us as we “sing her praises” and welcome her back to Harpeth Hall on Reunion Weekend.
