OUR APPROACH TO WORK
With Harper, our clients can expect a smooth, well-managed project from start to finish–all while remaining on time and on budget. We bring together the best in experience, technology, and client service to deliver the high-quality results our clients deserve and have come to expect. The Harper approach is centered around one core element – trust. Trust is the foundation upon which we build relationships with our clients, design partners, trade partners, vendors, and community.
ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY METHODS
We have been instrumental over the years in educating and working with our clients on Alternative Delivery Methods, including Construction Manager At-Risk and Design-Build. Our process involves sitting down with our clients to discuss how these methods could be applied to their project and explain how these methods are successfully leveraged in similar markets.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
Harper has a strong in-house Construction Technology team focused on applying a variety of technologies to each phase of construction to enhance efficiency, productivity, safety, and quality. During preconstruction, our team leverages model-based estimating and constructability reviews. These tools offer a precise and streamlined approach to estimating costs and identifying potential issues. This enables us to catch design inconsistencies or obstacles before they lead to costly delays.
In the construction phase, we employ state-of-the-art tech, including drones, robotic total stations, and laser scanners. Drones provide a bird’s-eye view of the job site, ensuring real-time tracking of construction progress. Robotic total stations assist with accurate layout and as-built documentation, while laser scanners are crucial for obtaining exact dimensional and positional data. These technologies optimize our accuracy and efficiency, keeping the project on time and within budget.
PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES
To ensure the successful delivery of an upcoming project, Harper provides a thorough and systematic preconstruction process for owners leveraging the selected procurement methods. Each of our divisions has a large preconstruction team and we involve our operations staff in this process to make the transition to construction as seamless as possible. Our preconstruction services are one of the most significant benefits of alternative delivery construction by providing the ownership team with additional planning tools and services to ensure on-time project delivery within the desired budget. Our preconstruction services set us apart as a construction partner and we have a robust set of tools, technology, and resources to maximize the chances of your project’s success.
CLOUD-BASED PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Harper utilizes Procore, a web-based management platform, to collaborate, store information, and manage updates, creating one source of truth regarding design documents, budget, and schedule for the project management and design team. Owners and the project team have 24/7 access to see and review all pertinent information concerning the project status and schedule. Our management processes are built around utilization of Procore which is accessible to all members of the project team including owner, design team, commissioning agent, other design consultants, and our trade partners. The system provides a single source of access for all project documents, project models, project cost, submittals, shop drawings, meeting minutes, inspections, and closeouts.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE & MAINTENANCE
HarperXS is our dedicated team for maintenance and emergency response. We provide emergency response services, including nights and weekends, for any unplanned maintenance or repairs to your system. We are able to provide on-the-site pricing and timeframe to expedite repairs while allowing you to estimate cost and downtime. We understand emergencies not only cost money, but can attract local attention, so we use our expertise to minimize cost and schedule. Our approach to maintenance contracts is listening to our client’s needs and constraints and working hard to create a unique service package that fits their facilities and budgets. We are quick to respond with cost-effective solutions to meet needs. We also offer maintenance services in both our Commercial and Environmental Services Divisions.
MWBE & LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS
With over seven decadess of experience across the Southeast, we have extensive knowledge of the local subconsultant market. We have great relationships with subs throughout the region, making us a preferred team to work with on projects. Our reputation allows us to be selective in which subconsultants we bring on for any given project, and allows us to prioritize competitive and costeffective relationships.
Harper is actively involved and invested in furthering MWBE efforts and outreach and regularly conducts outreach sessions to encourage MWBE firms to participate as our trade partners in both public and private projects.
SELF PERFORMANCE
Harper’s philosophy on self-perform versus subcontracted work has always been “do what we’re best at.” For self-perform work, we have strategically recruited and successfully trained the best tradespeople in the industry to ensure quality workmanship at a best value for our clients. Our teams receive regular OSHA training and have access to quarterly safety and means and methods workshops. Our people are the difference and we believe in the value of investing in our teams.
We also work hard to include local workers in every project. Bringing local Harper employees to your job reduces project costs by eliminating the need for accommodations. This approach feeds your economy and keeps our team close to home. The project team also has more stake in the project when the facility they are building serves their friends and family.
SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
Harper continues to lead our region in the sustainability movement by focusing on education and collaboration at all levels of the building process. Our expertise applies to preconstruction, construction, material management, commissioning, systems analysis, and life-cycle costs. Harper has contracted over $300 million in sustainable construction projects, including LEED-Certified and Green Globe projects. Harper’s involvement in the City of Seneca’s Water Treatment Plant Upgrades helped the project in earning the first Silver Envision Certification in the Carolinas.
SAFETY IS A CORE VALUE
At Harper, safety isn’t just a priority, it’s a value. Our culture-based approach to safe work performance is part of the management process for all of our projects. We create and maintain a positive work environment that upholds safe behavior and empowers all project employees to take responsibility for safety. Harper is committed to providing a safe work environment for our employees, clients, trade partners, and the public. The safety and well-being of everyone involved is our first consideration as we plan our work. We consider safety to be an important part of our overall corporate operations and proactively seek to maintain an ongoing program to meet our commitment. We work together to create a culture for safety. Our team has acheived over 5 million safe work hours.
Our “SOAR” initiative supports and strengthens our commitment to providing a safe work environment for employees, clients, subcontractors, and the public, promoting Safety, Observation, Accountability and positive Results.
SAFETY is our highest priority.
OBSERVATION demonstrates action. We demonstrate our true commitment to safety by closely auditing our work practices and our work environment.
ACCOUNTABILITY is a critical element to our success. We hold every Harper associate and every member of our construction teams responsible for meeting our expectations for safety.
RESULTS are celebrated with our associates, subcontractors and owners. Working together to meet our commitment to safety produces positive results for everyone involved. It is important for us to celebrate these achievements together.
SOAR requires all team members to take responsibility for their role in deliberate and comprehensive preplanning with safety as the major element of concern. Our strides in safety, executed by our safety team, have resulted in annual awards from Carolinas AGC and the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
COMMUNITY WORK
Harper’s focus is building up our clients and our community. Through our work, we are building facilities that enhance the quality of life in our community by providing clean drinking water, creating wonderful learning environments for our children, beautiful outdoor spaces, and more. And through our philanthropic efforts, we give back to organizations that are committed to making our community a better place for all. Harper is the proud recipient of the Community Foundation of Greenville’s 2022 Philanthropic Spirit Award and the 2023 CAGC Community Impact Award which recognizes an organization that serves the community through exceptional partnerships with nonprofits and by providing vital programming. ROOM TO GROW
PRECONSTRUCTION TRACK
Interns and co-ops can support pursuits, budgeting, and early project planning, building a strong foundation in how projects are developed and delivered. With a career in Preconstruction, team members focus on estimating, budgeting, and early project planning. Estimators evaluate drawings, scopes, and pricing to develop accurate budgets, manage risk, and identify value opportunities, all while building a strong foundation for growth into senior estimating, preconstruction leadership, or broader operational roles.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT TRACK
Interns and co-ops who join our team have a clear, long-term career path in project management. The Office Operations role, where they learn how projects are planned, documented, and supported, while also getting exposure to the jobsite through field walks and team coordination. Many then start as Project Engineers, gaining hands-on field and office experience, then grow into Assistant Project Managers with increasing responsibility for schedules, budgets, and coordination. From there, team members advance to Project Manager, leading projects and teams, and continue into Senior Project Manager, overseeing complex work and mentoring others. For those who want to keep growing, the path extends into leadership roles such as Vice President, shaping strategy and client relationships.
SUPERINTENDENT TRACK
At Harper, field leaders have a defined path to grow their careers. Interns and coops on this track typically begin in a Field Operations role, learning day-to-day site operations, safety, logistics, and trade coordination alongside experienced superintendents. Many begin their careers as a Field Engineer and move to a Senior Field Engineer role. From there, they advance to Assistant Superintendent then to Superintendent, taking full responsibility for project execution and trade management. From there, General Superintendents oversee multiple projects and mentor field teams, with opportunities to continue into Vice President roles focused on operations leadership, strategy, and company-wide performance.
CORPORATE TRACK
Harper also offers long-term growth opportunities within corporate and specialized teams like Construction Technology, Human Resources, Accounting, Business Intelligence, Safety, Information Technology, and Marketing gaining specialized expertise while supporting project teams and company operations. These roles provide room for advancement, leadership development, and cross-functional growth, allowing teammates to shape how Harper builds, operates, and serves its clients.
“I love the work environment and culture at Harper. From my first day because everyone was willing to help. The teams are truly collaborative, people across projects and learn more about the business. What also stood program. I had the opportunity to rotate through project management and a full-time role in preconstruction
ABBY NICHOLSON, ASST. PRECONSTRUCTION (Office Operations & Preconstruction Co-op,

as a co-op, I felt comfortable asking questions and learned quickly collaborative, and the company lunches and outings made it easy to connect with stood out to me was how much you can explore through the co-op and preconstruction, and those experiences ultimately led me to accept preconstruction after graduation.”
PRECONSTRUCTION ENGINEER
Co-op, 4 Rotations, 2022-2023, ESD)

“During my summer at Harper, I gained a new perspective on how construction technology supports projects before, during, and after construction, which was an area I had not previously explored. With the team’s mentorship and support, I developed a strong interest in this work and decided to pursue it full time. I’m excited to continue growing in this field at Harper.
KATIE HILNER, JR. VDC COORDINATOR (Current VDC Intern, Construction Technology)

“My co-op experience at Harper helped me discover exactly what I wanted to do after graduation. Beyond that, the people, environment, and culture at Harper is incredible. I wouldn’t be who I am today without Harper.”
LOGAN EASTERLIN, SR. FIELD ENGINEER (Field and Office Operations Co-op, 4 Rotations, 2021-2022, ESD)
