UPTIME

How Emotional Intelligence Can Help You Build Resilience and Heal Your Relationship with Work

A Practical Guide to Personal Productivity and Wellbeing

Kandi Wiens

Laura Mae Martin

An essential guide that teaches how to prevent burnout by learning to develop and master key emotional intelligence skills.

Google’s Executive Productivity Advisor offers insights on how to make work work for you, providing actionable steps to optimise your productivity, accomplish more, prevent burnout, and cultivate a harmonious work-life balance.

After burnout caused a life-threatening health crisis in her own life, Dr. Kandi Wiens left a lucrative career and enrolled in a doctoral programme to understand why burnout was leaving millions sick, exhausted and unmotivated. In her research, she discovered that many workers (despite dangerous levels of work-related stress) seemed to be naturally ‘immune’ to burnout, due to a high degree of emotional intelligence or (EI) which is the ability to clearly understand and productively manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. In Burnout Immunity, Dr Wiens combines research, exercises, self-assessments and real-life stories from people with burnout immunity, to teach workers how to avoid burnout and cultivate a healthier relationship with work.

Every day, tens of thousands of Google employees, from executives to interns, rely on Laura Mae Martin’s tips and best practices for how to make the most of their time. Now, with Uptime, Laura brings her unique approach to productivity and wellbeing to anyone who wants to be more effective and experience “calm accomplishment” whether at work, at school, or in their own personal lives. Laura offers a holistic approach to conquering everything from the avalanche of emails, to becoming the master of your own calendar, and running your own meetings. Uptime is a blueprint for operating at the highest levels of productivity whilst enhancing your own personal wellbeing.

INTERVIEWOLOGY

LEARNED EXCELLENCE

The New Science of Interviewing

Mental Disciplines for Leading and Winning from the World’s Top Performers

Anna Papalia A groundbreaking guide to mastering the job interview, offering proven advice and techniques to discover your unique interview style that is key to interviewing better—for those on either side of the table. After years of experience as an HR professional and consultant for Fortune 500 companies, Anna learnt that conventional interview advice doesn’t work for one simple reason: they don’t get to the heart of what actually makes a great interview—self-awareness. At its core, an interview is a set of questions about you. If you don’t know yourself, you won’t do well. Determined to make the process better and more inclusive, Anna spent years researching how people interview and uncovered a new science to interviewing, rooted in the finding that there are four main styles people exhibit in an interview: a Charmer, a Challenger, an Examiner, or a Harmonizer. In Interviewology, Anna teaches how to identify your individual style (and that of who you are interviewing with) and offers pragmatic tips for using this knowledge to nail your next interview.

Eric Potterat, Alan Eagle Learn how to perform at your very best from one of the world’s leading performance psychologists and retired US Navy Commander. He served as the lead psychologist for the US Navy SEALs and the Los Angeles Dodgers and has consulted with the US Women’s National Soccer team, the Miami Heat, Red Bull athletes, NASA astronauts, and dozens of Olympic medalists. In Learned Excellence, Eric distills the insights he’s learned into five mental disciplines for high performance—Values & Goals, Mindset, Process, Adversity Tolerance, and Balance & Recovery – and offers clean principles and practices for anyone looking to raise their game.

REUNION

POSSIBLE

Leadership and the Longing to Belong

How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict

Jerry Colonna Building on the success of his previous book Reboot, executive coach Jerry Colonna encourages leaders to consider the ways they have been complicit in – and benefitted – from the world they say they’d like to change and outlines a path to creating new systems of inclusion for everyone.

William Ury An essential guide for anyone looking to break through the toughest conflicts - whether in the workplace, at home, community, or the world - from bestselling author and international negotiator, William Ury.

We all want to belong. For executives and managers, to be better leaders—and people—we must create welcoming environments in which ourselves and others feel recognized and have a place. But to do so, we must first face our own need for belonging and how that need is often thwarted. Colonna argues that only through radical self-inquiry can we come home to ourselves and others, and create systemic belonging. Many people in power fall into the trap of toxic leadership, but this can be overcome. In Reunion, Colonna offers insights and practical advice that will help create an inclusive and welcoming workspace.

Conflict is increasing everywhere, threatening everything we hold dear—from our families to our democracy, from our workplaces to our world. In nearly every area of society, we are fighting more and collaborating less, especially over crucial problems that demand solutions. In Possible, William Ury shares a new “path to possible”— time-tested practices that will help readers unlock their power to constructively engage and transform conflict. Part memoir, part manual, part manifesto, Possible offers stories and sage advice from Ury’s experience on the front lines of some of the world’s toughest conflicts.

In How the World Ran Out of Everything, award-winning journalist Peter S. Goodman walks readers through the complex system of manufacturing, transportation, and logistics that impacts nearly every aspect of our society. He shows us how we got to our current predicament—revealing an overreliance on lean production and faraway warehouses—and how the health of the supply chain has spun into a central political issue, a key factor in rising inflation and the fate of the global economy at large. His eye-opening analysis culminates in a powerful call to action, claiming that reforming our supply chain is not only necessary to avoid dysfunction in our day to day, but also to secure a more equitable future for everyone.

GOOD JUDGMENT

THE SKILL CODE

Making Better Business Decisions with the Science of Human Personality

How to Save Human Ability in an Age of Intelligent Machines

Richard Davis

Matt Beane

An experienced organisational psychologist teaches you how to select the right employees and business partners, assess investment opportunities more shrewdly, resolve conflicts better and faster, and optimise your performance on the job using the science of personality.

From one of the world’s top researchers on work and technology comes an insightful guide to protecting your skill in a world filled with AI and robots.

Psychologists widely agree that five key traits define our personalities–intellect, emotionality, sociability, drive, and diligence – and determine our behaviours, including our motivations, social inclinations, reactions to crisis or complexity, and patterns of thinking. Dr. Richard Davis has spent decades advising business leaders from some of the world’s biggest companies, including Amazon, Starbucks, Nike, and the NBA. As a result of his life’s work, he has developed not only a unique perspective on what human personality is, but an indispensable toolkit for analysing it, and using the information effectively. In Good Judgment, he explains what the science of personality is and how it works, and how all of us can use it to improve our working relationships, careers, and lives.

Whatever your job, decades of research show that you achieved mastery by working with someone who knew more than you did. But today, this essential bond is under threat. In our quest to optimise productivity with technologies like AI and robots, we are separating junior workers from experts in workplaces around the world. It’s a looming problem that few are addressing, until now. In The Skill Code, researcher and technologist Matt Beane reveals the hidden code that underwrites every successful expert-novice relationship and shows you how to build skill more effectively – and how to make intelligent technologies part of the solution, not the problem.

THE RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX Inheriting the Feminist History of the Crossword Puzzle

Anna Shechtman

THE DARKEST WHITE A Mountain Legend and the Avalanche That Took Him

Eric Blehm

A memoir from renowned puzzle creator, Anna Schechtman, and a history of the crossword puzzle as an unexpected site of women’s work and feminist protest.

From Eric Blehm, the bestselling author of The Last Season and Fearless, comes the story of the legendary snowboarder Craig Kelly and his death in the Durrand Glacier Avalanche—a devastating and controversial tragedy that claimed the lives of seven people.

Anna Shechtman published her first New York Times puzzle at age nineteen, and later, spearheaded the The New Yorker’s popular crossword section. In The Riddles of the Sphinx which is part memoir, part cultural analysis—she excavates the hidden history of the crossword and the overlooked women who have been central to its creation, from the “Crossword Craze” of the 1920s to the role of digital technology today. As she tells the story of her own experience in the CrossWorld, she analyses the roles assigned to women in culture, the boxes they’ve been allowed to fill, and the ways that they’ve used puzzles to negotiate the constraints and play of desire under patriarchy.

In January 2003, a 100-foot-wide tide of snow barreled down the Northern Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. More than a dozen skiers and snowboarders were buried beneath several tons of snow and ice. Among them was Craig Kelly, a man who had propelled snowboarding into the mainstream before walking away from competitions, to rekindle his passion in the untamed alpine wilds of North America. The Darkest White is the story of Craig Kelly’s life, a heartbreaking but extraordinary and inspiring odyssey of a kid whose athletic prowess revolutionised winter sports, took him around the globe, and pushed him into ever more extreme environments that would ultimately take his life.

THE FATAL ALLIANCE A Century of War on Film

David Thomson

FILM, TV & ART PUB DATE: ISBN: FORMAT: PRICE:

4 JANUARY 2024 9780063041417 HB £25

From the acclaimed film critic David Thomson, comes a magisterial look at a century of battle depicted on screen, and a meditation on the twisted relationship between war and the movies. In The Fatal Alliance, David Thomson offers a rich, and troubling study of that most beloved genre: the war movie. It’s not a standard history of war films, though Thomson does turn his eye to many favourites – such as All Quiet on the Western Front, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Saving Private Ryan. Instead The Fatal Alliance does much more, exploring how war and cinema in the twentieth century became inextricably linked. Movies had only begun to exist by the beginning of World War I, yet in less than a century, had transformed civilian experience of war - and history itself - for millions around the globe. This reality is the moral conundrum at the heart of Thomson’s book. Is there something problematic at how much moviegoers enjoy depictions of violence on a grand scale? And what does this truth say about us, our culture, and our changing sense of warfare and the past?

Amish Tripathi & Bhavna Roy In Idols, a companion volume to the bestselling Dharma, Amisha Tripathi and Bhavna Roy explore the essence and true meaning of idolatry. In this insightful and thought-provoking book, Amish and Bhavna tackle burning questions about idol worship through simple, varied and astute interpretations of myths and religious texts. They unearth the symbolic essence of Ishta Devata, dive into the benefits of bhakti and tackle the importance of religion for people and society. In the process, they reveal the expansive philosophy behind the practice and how it can lead us to experience – intellectually, ideologically and, most importantly, in our hearts – the Oneness of God, through transformation, acceptance and love.

THE MYSTIC JESUS The Mind of Love

Marianne Williamson Returning to the topic of her beloved classic bestseller Return to Love, spiritual guide Marianne Williamson builds on the ideas introduced in that book to lead us toward the light through the inspiring guidance of the mystic Jesus. For many, Jesus has become a precious relic, revered yet lacking the immediacy of authentic spiritual force. In The Mystic Jesus, Williamson writes of a Jesus who transcends both glib imagery and outdated religious dogma. She writes not only of an historical Messiah but of a spirit alive in all of us today. Williamson brings to The Mystic Jesus her talent at making the densest theological theories relevant to our everyday lives. She merges psychological and religious understanding, presenting Jesus as a guide to another way of thinking, therefore the builder of another kind of world.

SPIRITUALITY PUB DATE: ISBN: FORMAT: PRICE:

11 APRIL 2024 9780063387522 HB £25

Pope Francis tells the story of his life through the events that have marked humanity—from the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 when he was almost three years old, to the present day. Life is an extraordinary journey through the decades to retrace the most significant stages of our time through the memories of the Pope including the fall of Berlin Wall, Videla’s coup in Argentina, the moon landing in 1969, and the 1986 World Cup where Maradona scored “the hand of God” goal. The book is filled with memories of a pastor who, from his very personal point of view, recounts the Nazi extermination of the Jews, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the great economic recession of 2008, the collapse of the Twin Towers, the pandemic, the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and the conclave that elected him as Pope Francis. At the same time, Francis shares important messages on major current issues including social inequalities, the climate crisis, war, atomic weapons, racial discrimination, and pro-life battles.
