The Casa Wabi Chicken Coop promotes collectivity in its design and function. Commissioned by the Casa Wabi Arts Foundation, the Coop provides eggs for the Casa Wabi Arts Foundation. It was also meant to be an adaption of a collective housing model–only, in this case, for birds.

The floor of the Coop is open and unobstructed, making it an ideal space for animals to gather, interact, and eat. Gridded walls provide sheltered spaces for isolated sleeping or resting. The gridlocked design also allows the structure to support itself and its main loads, while also filtering in the right amount of sunlight and breeze for the animals to live comfortably. To create the blackened effect, the wood of the Coop was burned using Shou Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi - a traditional Japanese method that heightens the Coop’s aesthetic while preserving the quality of the wood. Thanks to this burning process, the wood of the Coop is also weather and bug resistant.

This unique underground home concept may be 15 metres below ground, but the concept’s architects have created a space boasting more autonomy than even the best above-ground homes. This home concept boasts self-sustaining systems, including –water, sewage, ventilation, and air purification–but its structure also encourages autonomy for its inhabitants. Nothing is inaccessible.

A fish pool, a stone garden, and garden fit for growing a variety of produce are just some of the genuinely natural elements in the bunker, which create an illusion of space and freedom even underground. These illusions carry into the structure of the home, which was designed with both space and boundaries in mind. Taking a unique approach to terrestrial architecture, cylindrical shapes and a purposeful lack of sharp angles throughout the bunker give a sense of flow to the space in a new and innovative way. Partitions serve as dividers between different areas, extending this sense of flow by creating softer, more flexible boundaries throughout.

Lighting may be the most significant element of the bunker’s design. One of two master bedrooms is treated to sensitive screen-windows that emulate a variety of natural conditions Treat yourself to a view of snow-capped mountains, a star-lit sky, or even a morning breeze: “opening” the window, you may even smell fresh grass. In the other, an LED-system also ado the ceiling, literally surrounding the room in sky-like natural light. In common living spaces, a large sofa and dining table bring the creature comforts of metropolitan living underground.

Still, Villa Chams is undeniably integrated with the nature that encompasses it. Inside the villa’s interior, natural furnishings compliment the earthy structure, with certain aesthetic elements created to accommodate the natural wear and tear of time.

Walls of poured earth and concrete create a grounding influence, as layers of light open up and expand the space. The meticulous placement of walls and columns allow for the maximum sunlight, creating a flow of movement within the villa itself, and between the villa and the land. Even the pool imitates the flow of a river.

The water is bordered by both natural rocks and structural columns, and the floor of rough terrazzo and mineral aggregates illustrates a massaging effect on the feet. The interplay between infrastructure and environment lends itself to a space adaptable for any environment. The timber-laden building was constructed to connect the home and adjacent shed together, to frame the bounding farmland and capture its perfect view of the valley (which is even better at sunrise).

This view decorates the home’s living room and kitchen, which is also treated to natural ventilation, thanks to windows that open all the way up. A warm palette of leather, raw brass and concrete envelopes provide visitors with a sense of grounding and calmness. However, it is the timber that is the star of this home.

Sustainably sourced, the main material of the Wensley house is gathered from Oregon, reclaimed and salvaged from various Melbourne projects, alas with a floor of Mixed Australian hardwood.� A brushed finish and tong oil stain compliment the terracottas, whites, and blues accenting the rustic interior.

Evolution is important to Zablocki–he tends to find inspiration in the seasonal cycles of both fashion and nature–and his talent for bridging cycle and structure is evident in his work.

The Pinaceae collection particularly embodies this.

Zablocki took advantage of the unique variables of wood firing to produce unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Unlike gas, the final result produced by wood firing depends on the weather, type of wood, and even the clay used, so every piece is 100% unique. Shared between each piece is a gorgeous glaze, created when wood ash lands on the clay and melts at over 2000 degrees. Zablocki is drawn to wood burning for its sense of unknown; each of his projects is a labour of love, but like the landscapes he is inspired by, it is spontaneity that makes the final product so special.

Entering the home from the ground floor replicates the feeling of a structural void, creating a sense of wonder as you ascend the stairs to the pavilion. The diaphanous second-story living space opens up to the outside world, with plenty of natural light. An open concept living and bedroom create a sense of flow and movement, with an enclosed bathroom for privacy.

Sitting at the base of a three million year-old volcanic volcano, the organic sediment is complemented by lines of pine and white fir trees and waist-high clusters of manzanita climbing the rock.

The space is reminiscent of an intimate ski cabin, with a main open space built for both living and cooking, and additional spaces for the garage, playroom, craft room and ski locker. Bedrooms are artfully concealed behind an acoustically detailed California walnut screen, a motif that continues throughout the house.

Basalt floors connect the home with the basalt boulders present throughout its landscape. A concrete, glass, and walnut material palette is contrasted by red-orange class, its magma-like colouring designed to reference the site’s geological roots while giving the home a warm hue. In further harmony with nature, sustainably integrated into the design of the house, with a focus on efficient energy retention.

High efficiency mechanical equipment, including radiantly heated floors and enhanced insulation levels, mitigate excess energy use. And, in response to California’s recent wildfires, a concrete and steel exterior is more than just aesthetic; the materials are low maintenance and fire resistant.

But it was in transporting the tanks that inspiration struck: also a musician, Goldenbeld was inspired by the noise the tanks made, hence the “Bell” lamp name. Under the careful artistry of Akko Goldenbeld, discarded air tanks translated into gorgeous industrial lamps, which make a long sound when switched on. For Goldenbeld, “it’s as an ode to the light.

People become more aware of using light in a world where everything sweeps by.”

Named after a traditional song, Casa Naila honors Oaxaca in all of its components. The house serves as a beacon to the sea, with two of its a-frame fronts facing the Pacific Coast. Four sevenmeter volumes boast gorgeous ocean views from each room, where up to fifteen ocean-loving guests can take advantage.

Wooden frame structures are made from palm bone wood, a culturally significant material used often in Oaxaca’s rural architecture. The orientation of the palm bone frame creates permeability and cross-ventilation on the inside–a treat in Oaxaca’s warm climate–and gorgeous, open views, undisturbed by window frames.

Aesthetically, palm bone framing also creates unique patterns of shadow and sunlight during the day, and the contrast of the lighting at night makes the house resemble a lighthouse on the ocean.

In the interior, vernacular construction techniques make a modern comeback. Palm bone is adapted for a contemporary interpretation of traditional Oaxacan housing.

Clay and earth flooring enhance the natural feel of the home while also providing thermal comfort for guests (there’s no better feeling than the sun-warmed clay on your feet). Like the floor, the stove is also built with clay, serving as the kitchen’s focal point. The kitchen also plays an important role in Oaxacan culture, and this home is no exception.

Once a mid-century school house in an abandoned village, this historic build has been resurrected in this new iteration of Escola Feminina. The history and style of the space has been preserved by leaving the commercial space largely untouched, keeping renovations simple and minimal. This was done out of respect for the building’s history and stylistic traditions, but the retainment of its original aesthetic was an added bonus. Situated on a slope of Serra do Sicó in the Beiras region of Portugal, this mid-century school house was part of a village that had been abandoned for over 70 years.

Low-slung walls bring a sense of flow and structure to this expansive, open space, separating the living and dining area from the fully equipped kitchen without closing the space off completely. Plenty of windows soak both rooms in natural sunlight. Speaking of the kitchen, morning breakfast and snacks are provided by an adjacent village restaurant, which boasts a rotating menu of incredible, locally-sourced dishes. If you wish, you can also enjoy fresh eggs from the house chickens.

With one en-suite double bedroom, this house is perfect for two, but if you prefer more company, there is ample space to add another bed. Step outside into rambling gardens through to a lovely shared pool. If that’s not enough water for you, there’s also a small lake, where swans and ducks coexist. Country life and contemporary comforts abound in this unique and history-laden retreat.

The five-volume project was constructed to have the smallest possible impact on the surrounding forest of Valle de Bravo. That’s where the five volumes come in– separating the space into five individual units allows building to be done between the trees rather than having to cut them down, and gives the whole build a rustic, cozy feel.

Four guest houses and a main house form the San Simรณn Cabins, all of which are positioned to take in the most natural light. Dark volcanic stone mixes with warm pine wood to create a sense of balance, while clean lines and modern silhouettes elevate these rustic materials into the realm of the refined.

Each cabin, each comes with a terrace, fire pit, and sitting area, all perfect for bringing everyone together. Plunge pools around the property allow you to literally immerse yourself in nature. Whatever you’re up to, the multitude of trees will shelter you from prying eyes–and the sun’s most brutal heat.
