Try a draped hypertufa planter. These are cement pots or fabric pots made from the same mixture as we make hypertufa, but we make it with extra Portland cement. Since it is being made from a piece of leftover fabric, and will not have 1-2 inch sides as its structure, it needs a strong mix of the Portland cement to be sure it is sturdy. Best fabric: It seems to be a piece of OLD TOWEL OR A FLEECE BLANKET. A textured fabric is better, hence the fleece blankets, old towels, etc. It seems to me that the more absorbent the fabric is, the better results you will have. The fabric needs to absorb the cement to be successfully strong and dampening the fabric prior to placing it in the slurry seems to be the best procedure. You can drill holes in it very easily with a drill after it is cured. Use a masonry bit. Recipe on this one is heavy on the cement: • 1 part Portland cement (I was using a 2 qt pitcher) • 1/4 part of peat (about 1 pint) • Handful of vermiculite and mortar mix • Water, about a 2 qt pitcher added slowly Cut the draping fabric into a circle or oval, or even use it as a rectangle or square for pointy tips. To see how it might appear when finished, dampen your fabric piece and hang it from your “tower.”
Your support tower must be sturdy and allow the fabric to “drape” because it is this draping that makes the final outcome of the piece. Be sure to cover your tower in plastic! The piece is slightly pliable when you attempt to remove it from the tower after it has cured/hardened. Once your slurry is all mixed, and you have a consistency like meat gravy, if you have any doubt that your mix won’t be strong enough, put in a little extra Portland cement. When you are ready, soak the dampened draping fabric in your slurry mix and roll it around until it is completely soaked with cement slurry. Wear gloves of course. I had to dip the mix up and smoosh it into the fabric on both sides, being sure to get it into folds. Be sure to mix up enough slurry to get it all wet. Depending on the size of your fabric piece, you may need to double the recipe. If you have leftovers, have a few small cloths ready to drape over a butter dish or bowl, or just pour it into those dishes to make feet for a trough. When you are draping it over your tower, it is easy to pull and adjust until you get the look that pleases you. Curing the Planter I left my creation for 2 nights in a cold garage, with a large garbage bag pulled over it. After two days, I pulled the piece off the bar stool tower support. It is slightly pliable at this point, but did harden after the next step. I put it back on the bar stool and again put the garbage bag over it and left it for another 24 hours in the garage.

2. Keep Flat Surfaces Clutter-free Papers, books, brochures and magazines tend to accumulate on flat surfaces all around the house, and the family room is no different. In fact, the family room is often more cluttered because it’s a central gathering place in the house. A two drawer lateral file is an ideal recommendation - If you don’t have the floor space, a stackable file cart will do.
3. Control Out-of-Control Cords Until the world goes wireless, we’ll forever be stuck with tangled cables behind our entertainment centers. Fortunately, there are several options for taming cords in the family room. A cable caddy usually sticks onto a desktop (or behind the TV console) and has a space for several cables to clamp into. 4. Create a Play Zone If toys are taking over your family room, it’s time to put them in timeout. Unused corners of a family room transform into great play areas because the walls serve to block encroaching clutter. Corners are also good areas to put a small bookcase or children’s table. Add rolling bins for toy storage so your child doesn’t have to feel confined, but is encouraged to pick up after he or she is done playing.

Tips for Beginners Idea 1 Make a list of needs and wants. Do your kids need a play space? Do you want to grow vegetables? Would your family gather on a patio? Do some very rough sketches of the yard with thoughts of where you want to place things; it’s a great organizing principle for landscape design for beginners. “These aren’t master plans, just ideas,” says Marianne Lipanovich, author of the Big Book of Garden Designs (Oxmoor House, 2008). “The one I did for our front-yard overhaul was literally a few lines and a couple of circles, but my husband understood the plan, and we went ahead with formal planning out on the site. You can easily play around with ideas without a lot of time and commitment.” Idea 2 Study the sun and wind patterns. You might want to place a patio on the west side of the house, but it will get lots of afternoon sun, which means dinnertime in August won’t be relaxing -- just hot. And wind whistling around a corner will quickly extinguish a fire pit. Those are common mistakes in landscape design for beginners. Your design should take into account what the sun and wind do at different times of the day and year. “You’ll need solutions to temper the problem,” Lipanovich says. Idea 3 Live with it for a while. Coming to quick conclusions about your yard can lead to choices that don’t work in the long term. “In our yard, there are certain areas where you want to go and sit that I wouldn’t have thought of when we first bought it,” Lipanovich says. 4. One gallon at a time. How much paint will it take to cover your walls? The pros recommend one gallon for every 400 square feet. Covering textured, rough or unprimed surfaces may require more. Idea 4 Start small. Home and garden television shows are masters at revealing complete outdoor makeovers in just three days -- but they have a crew of 60, which is not a situation enjoyed by landscape design for beginners. Part of creating a landscape is slowly developing a plan and enjoying the process. From your master plan, start with a small flowerbed. Go out and work on it for an hour or two when you have the time, and worry less about filing everything up right away. “Give yourself some time to see how things develop. Plants grow and things fill in, and people forget that. The point is to take time and do it in pieces so you are happy with the final results,” Lipanovich says. “If you get into this thing and 10

want to get it done, you’ll take shortcuts and be too sloppy and tired to do it well.” Idea 5 Work around a focal point. Any good garden design has a focal point or series of focal points, and it’s an easy principle to put in place in landscape design for beginners. That may be a sculpture or a stunning plant, a tree, or a series of shrubs. “The point is to draw your eye and move it through the landscape,” Lipanovich says. Idea 6 Focus on scale and pacing. It’s the trickiest principle in landscape design for beginners, but scale and pacing give your yard a pulled-together look. There will be variations in size, shape, and color, with tall plants against a building or in the back of a flowerbed, and paths that lead people through the space. “You’ll want to repeat some elements, whether it’s a certain plant, a common color, or even a shape, so there’s a sense of cohesion,” Lipanovich says. “But you also don’t want it to be monotonous, so try adding an occasional element that’s different from the landscape and will stand out.” Idea 7 If you’re looking for paint in high-traffic areas, semi-gloss is Be open to change. If all of that bare space is too much to look at, and the kids and dogs are tracking in mud, rely on temporary solutions -- annuals, fast-growing groundcovers that you don’t care about for the long term, even mulch -- to cover an area while you’re figuring out what you want. “Large landscaping features like trees can be hard to move; annuals can be taken out, and small perennials and shrubs can be transplanted if you realize they’re in the wrong spot. But in the meantime, you have something out there,” Lipanovich says.
