T
he Harlingen High School Band is a Texas recognized band program that features a marching band, 5 concert bands, four jazz ensembles, a jazz combo, a mariachi band, color guard and multiple chamber ensembles.
state of Texas. In 2007, the Honors Band performed in Indianapolis, Indiana at the prestigious Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and was recognized by the National Wind Band Honors for outstanding performance of New Music.
The "Big Red" Cardinal Marching Band has won numerous "Grand Champion" awards throughout South Texas. It is the only 6A High School marching band in South Texas to participate at the Texas University Interscholastic League State Marching Band Contest 12 consecutive times, beginning in 1998.
In 2011 the Harlingen High School Band was named the Texas Bandmasters Association Exemplary High School Band of the year in Texas!
The band program’s multiple concert bands have been awarded consistent "Sweepstakes" for their performances at the University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-Reading Contest, including being recognized as a participant in the Texas Honor Band finals competition, placing as high as ninth in the

The jazz program consists of four jazz bands and a jazz combo. The Honors Jazz Band has the distinct honor of performing at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 2003, and 2015. In 2017 they were the TMEA invited Jazz Ensemble, and performed at TMEA Music Convention with guest artist Arturo Sandoval. The Honors Jazz Band was also invited to perform in 2020, and is honored to now present their performance at the 2021 Midwest Clinic.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC: In 2020 the Harlingen High School Marching Band was able to compete and advance to the Texas State Marching Band Contest. 47 students were selected to the Region 28 District Band, 34 students were selected to the Region 28 Band, 22 students were selected to the Region 28 Pre- Area Band, 8 students to the Area Band and 2 were selected for the TMEA All-State Band. In 2021 the band program sustained and organized 3 concert bands which were able to perform at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Evaluation. All three bands were awarded unanimous First Divisions. The Honors Jazz Band also had an outstanding year. The band competed in two video recorded festivals and received two Grand Champion Awards. The Honors Jazz Band was recently honored as the 2022 TMEA invited Jazz Ensemble and will perform at the TMEA Music Convention in San Antonio in February of 2022.

HARLINGEN H.S. STAFF Maria Coronado Harlingen High School Head Band Director Maria Coronado is a graduate of Harlingen High School in Harlingen, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Music Education from McNeese St. University in Lake Charles, La. While at McNeese, Maria studied trumpet with the late Dr. Michael Ewald, jazz education with Rick Condit and conducting with Harvey Benstein. She is currently in her 22nd year at Harlingen High School with her last 5 years as Director of Bands. Miss Coronado’s bands have received superior ratings and “best in class” awards for their performances at various festivals including national recognition at festivals in Los Angeles, California and in New York. Prior to her position at Harlingen High School, Maria was a band director in the McAllen Independent School District. Maria serves as the TMEA Region 28 Jazz Coordinator and the TMEA Area G Mentor Program Coordinator. Her affiliations include the Texas Music Educator's Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Phi Beta Mu.
Melanie Kulaga Harlingen High School Assitant Band Director Melanie Kulaga is a native of Louisiana, she is in her 15th year as an Associate Band Director at Harlingen High School. Miss Kulaga received her Bachelor of Music degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Miss Kulaga studied trumpet with Mr. David Scott, Professor of Trumpet at McNeese State University. In addition to playing in the university Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Trumpet Choir, Miss Kulaga played second trumpet in the Faculty Brass Quintet, Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra, and the Rapides Symphony Orchestra. She attended the Empire Brass Seminar at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts and played trumpet at Fiesta Texas (Opera Land) Park in San Antonio, Texas for two summers. Her affiliations include the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, the International Trumpet Guild, and Sigma Alpha Iota.

HARLINGEN H.S. STAFF Robert Larios Harlingen High School Assistant Band Director Robert E. Larios, a native of Harlingen, Texas, received his Bachelor of Music degree at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Mr. Larios is in his 26th year of teaching and 21st year at Harlingen High School. Prior to Harlingen, Mr. Larios taught percussion and concert band in Laredo, Texas for the J.W. Nixon band cluster. At Harlingen High School Mr. Larios is the director of percussion, Concert Band, and formerly Jazz Band III. Mr. Larios’ marching percussion sections and concert percussion ensembles have been awarded best percussion awards at marching band contests, and 1st place awards at percussion ensemble festivals. In 2013 Mr. Larios was the first director of the Cadet Band, Harlingen High School’s 5th concert band. The Cadet Band was awarded a 1st Division on stage at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. Mr. Larios’ jazz bands have been awarded best in class awards at jazz festivals across Texas including the Texas A&M Kingsville Jazz Festival, The Palo Alto Jazz Festival in San Antonio, the Georgetown Jazz Festival in Georgetown, Texas, and the McAllen ISD Jazz Festival. Students from his percussion studio have performed in the prestigious Texas All State Jazz Bands on numerous occasions. Mr. Larios enjoys playing in and being a member of the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra. He is a member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He and his wife Amanda have two wonderful children Sarah and Thomas.
Manuel Hernandez Harlingen High School Assitant Band Director Manuel Hernandez is originally from McAllen, TX where he took saxophone lessons from Rommel Rodriguez and George Michael. Mr. Hernandez is a graduate of the University of North Texas where he studied Music Education. During his time at North Texas Mr. Hernandez was a member of numerous ensembles including the award-winning North Texas Latin Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab Band, North Texas Pep Band, and UNT Green Brigade Marching Band while working as a freelance musician and maintaining a private lesson studio in the Dallas/ Fort-Worth Area. Mr. Hernandez is currently in his 8th year at Harlingen High School where he currently teaches Concert Band, Jazz Band II, Jazz Combo and Saxophone/Woodwind lessons. He has been fortunate enough to have students earn a spot in the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble and 6A All-State Symphonic Band. He is an active musician in the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas playing alongside Arturo Sandoval, Bob Mintzer, Terell Stafford, Andre Hayward, Candido Camero and currently plays Alto/Tenor saxophone for the RGV Jazz Orchestra, RGV Wind Symphony, Son Montuno Latin Orchestra, and Swing Street Big Band. His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, North American Saxophone Alliance, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He and his lovely wife, Vanessa, reside in Harlingen, TX with their beautiful daughter Isabella and their 3 dogs: Miles, Lisa, and Winston.

HARLINGEN H.S. STAFF Alejandro Cavazos Harlingen High School Assistant Band Director Alejandro Cavazos received his Bachelor of Music Education in 2010 from Texas A&M University – Kingsville where he studied trombone under Dr. Paul Hageman and Dr. Oscar Diaz. While studying at TAMUK, he performed with the Wind Symphony, Jazz Band I, and trombone choir, all of whom were invited ensembles to various music conferences such as Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Eastern Trombone Workshop. He has also marched with The Cavaliers’ Drum and Bugle Corp in 2007 and is currently on brass staff with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corp. Mr. Cavazos started his career off at Harlingen CISD at Harlingen South High School where he was there from 2010-2014. While at Harlingen South, he contributed to the marching band where they made the Texas State Marching Contest in 2012 and had all state musicians in classical and jazz. Mr. Cavazos then arrived at Donna High School from 20142018 where he was instrumental in that program to reach the Texas State Marching Contest in 2015. He also got UIL sweepstakes with the Concert band and Honors band and had multiple students make the all-region band. Currently, he is at Harlingen High School where numerous more achievements have been met since arriving in 2018. Harlingen High School made it to the State Marching Contest in 2018 and 2020 and he has also had multiple all-region students and an all-state musician. Mr. Cavazos has stayed an active performer within the Rio Grande Valley playing in musicals and brass bands. He is lead trombonist for the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra who has performed with the likes of the Count Basie Orchestra, Andre Hayward, and Terell Stafford. He is happily married to his wife, Giselle Cavazos, of 8 years and has a 7-year-old son named Alex and a 5-year-old daughter named Emma.
Veronica Villegas Harlingen High School Assitant Band Director Veronica Villegas- is currently on her 5th year as Assistant Band Director and Woodwind specialist at Harlingen High School. Prior to teaching in Harlingen, she was a band director for BISD (4 years), FWISD(3 years) and CISD(3 years). Veronica received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). While at UNLV, Veronica studied clarinet with Dr. Marina Sturm. She has also performed with several world-renowned artists such as Eric Marienthal, Bebe Neuwirth, Peter Schickele and has recorded with the UNLV Wind Orchestra under the prestigious Klavier label. She also served as member of the Desert Winds Orchestra, North Stake orchestra and as freelance musician in the Las Vegas area. Her affiliations include the Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, The International Clarinet Association. Veronica is currently serves as vocalist/flutist for the Son Montuno Latin Orchestra and Tenor saxophonist for the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra. She is also serves as clarinet faculty for the Del Mar VSMC. She currently resides in Brownsville, TX with her husband Richard De La Riva and their two sons Adan and Ethan.

HARLINGEN H.S. STAFF Ruben Reyes Harlingen High School Assistant Choir Director Ruben Reyes is in his seventh year at Harlingen High School where he is accompanist for the award-winning Cardinal Choirs, director of the Jazz Choir, and music director for musical theatre performances at the HCISD Performing Arts Conservatory. An accomplished performer, he is currently the pianist for the RGV Jazz Orchestra, Pasión - RGV’s Professional Chorus, and has made numerous appearances as a featured guest artist with jazz bands and choirs across South Texas. He is a highly sought after accompanist and has worked with a number of premier ensembles in the past, including the Shreveport Opera, Prísma Vocal Ensemble, and the world-renowned Centenary College Choir, which, along with many regional and European tours, made debuts in the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall during his tenure. A native of Brownsville, TX, Mr. Reyes is a graduate of Centenary College of LA with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. While at Centenary, he was the grand prize winner of the Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition and performed Grieg’s Concerto in A Minor with the Monroe Symphony. He was the pianist for the National Honor Band conducted by composer Frank Ticheli and was a featured artist with the Red River Wind Orchestra performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Ruben Reyes lives in Harlingen, TX with his wife, Lucy Reyes, and daughters Gwendolyn and Heidi.

HARLINGEN H.S. SOUTH STAFF Richard De La Riva Harlingen High School South Assistant Band Director Richard De La Riva is a native of Brownsville, TX., and is currently an Assistant Band Director at Harlingen High School South where he serves as the high brass instructor and Director of the Cano Gold Raven Band. Mr. De La Riva has served as composer/arranger in residence for HCISD for four consecutive years. Prior to his appointment at Harlingen High School South, Mr. De La Riva served as Assistant Director for the Hanna High School Band in Brownsville, Director of Bands in Fort Worth ISD, and Clark County ISD in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to his teaching, Mr. De La Riva has served as Jazz Chairperson for the Clark County School District in Nevada. While living in Las Vegas, he has served as Composer in Residence and principal trumpet for the Desert Winds Symphony, Co-Principal for the North Las Vegas Stake Orchestra, served as a member of the Las Vegas Brass Band, and adjunct in the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He has performed and recorded under the Klavier label with the University of Nevada Las Vegas as principal trumpet for the UNLV Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Brass Ensemble under the direction of Thomas Leslie, Taras Krysa, and Takayoshi “Tad” Suzuki. Mr. De La Riva has also performed with musicians such as Eric Marienthal, Will Kennedy, Russell Ferrante, Peter Schickele, and Edgar Meyer. Mr. De La Riva enjoys teaching music subjects such as brass pedagogy, music composition, transcription, orchestration, and Latin percussion. His passion for Latin music has led him to become the founder of the Son Montuno Latin Orchestra, which is comprised of music educators from the Rio Grande Valley. He has performed with his Latin Orchestra in the Annual Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival for four consecutive years. He also serves as an active member of the Brownsville Wind Symphony and the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra. Mr. De La Riva enjoys spending quality time with his wife Veronica and two sons Adan and Ethan.

Gunnery Sergeant Ken Ebo is currently the Musician Placement Director for the US Marine Music Program in the Southwestern region. Before this tour GySgt Ebo spent 8 years at the Naval School of Music as the Head of the Instrumental Division, Trombone Faculty, and Improvisation Instructor. As Musical Director of the Marine Corps Jazz Orchestra GySgt Ebo has performed across the country, including venues such as Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival, with artists such as Jon Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Michael Mossman, Tony Glausi, and Gilbert Castellanos. As an instrumentalist Ken has backed artists such as Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, and Frank Sinatra Jr. among others. Ken is an active clinician, adjudicator, performer, and educator. He is the author of Common Sense for Comeback Chops and his compositions and arrangements have been performed by various ensembles across the country. For the last 19 years he has directed with his own jazz orchestra in annual benefit concerts for Toys for Tots, both in Baltimore and Virginia Beach. GySgt Ebo has over 20 years of active duty military service and also spent 6 years as a reservist with both the Marine Reserve and the Army National Guard. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he deployed to the Al Anbar Province. He is stationed in Ft. Worth TX with his wife, also a professional musician, and two children (trumpet and harp).

RICK CONDIT In over four decades as a professional musician, Rick Condit has taught and performed in 25 countries on five continents. As a member of the first Monterey Jazz Festival All Star High School Band, tenor sax soloist with the legendary Stan Kenton Orchestra of the 70’s, UNT One O’Clock Lab Band, a Fulbright Senior Scholar, and Kennedy Center Jazz Ambassador, Rick has dedicated his career to performing, mentoring, and helping young musicians appreciate and enjoy America’s original art form – Jazz. Rick is currently Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has recently performed with such noted artists as Bobby Shew, Ingrid Jensen, Tom “Bones” Malone, Tom Scott, John Pizzarelli, Joey DeFrancesco, Bobby Sanabria, and The Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra, and presented clinics at the Jazz Education Network and Texas Music Educators Association conventions. He is an endorsing artist for Selmer Paris saxophones, Jody Jazz mouthpieces, and D’Addario Woodwinds.

Ronnie Rios, a multi Grammy Nominated Music Educator, is a graduate of Alice High School, Texas. He graduated Summa Cum Laude earning a Bachelor of Music Education and a Masters in Music Education from Texas A & M University- Kingsville. At 21, he began teaching in the Kingsville ISD, TX where his middle school and high school Concert Bands received consistent UIL Sweepstakes awards and Best in Class awards at various State and National festivals. His Jazz Ensembles also received Best in Class and numerous “Outstanding Band of the Festival” awards. He had All-State Band and Jazz Band students and led the Marching Band to the Texas State Marching Band Championships in his last year. As Director of Bands at Harlingen High School, TX for 21 years, all Six Concert Bands received consistent UIL Sweepstakes awards, Best in Class, State and National awards and All-State Band and Jazz Band students. The Harlingen High School “Big Red” Cardinal Marching Band made 11 consecutive appearances at the Texas State Marching Band Championships, qualifying every opportunity from 1998-2018. The group also earned positions in the finals of Bands of America Regional Championships, where they won the school’s first Regional in 2005. The Marching Band has also won numerous 1st Place Festival Awards and Grand Champion Marching Band Awards throughout South and Central Texas. The Concert Band advanced to the Texas 6A Honor Band Finals numerous times finishing as high as 9th in Texas. The Jazz Ensemble has received consistent Best in Class and numerous “Outstanding Band of the Festival” awards. The Jazz Ensemble was a featured performing group at the IAJE convention in New York City. They also performed and served as a featured group to Duke Ellington’s music with guest Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center. His Jazz Ensembles have also performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago three times and HHS was named the Honor Jazz Ensemble for the State of Texas and showcased at TMEA in San Antonio. His Jazz Ensembles have also shared the stage with artists Bob Mintzer, Michael Brecker, John Fedchock, Conrad Herwig, Mike Steinel, Woody Witt, Armin Marmolejo, Dennis DiBlisio, Terell Stafford and Arturo Sandoval. Mr. Rios’ groups have performed throughout Texas, as well Florida, California, New Jersey, Washington DC, Illinois and Central Park in NY City. In 2011, the Harlingen HS Band was named the Texas Bandmasters Association “Exemplary High School Band Program of the Year” in Texas. Mr. Rios has been named to the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers numerous times and was also named Teacher of the Year in the Harlingen CISD. He received the Distinguished Citizen Award by the community of Harlingen, and is also a past Phi Beta Mu ‘Texas Young Bandmaster of the Year’ recipient. He was even recently awarded the prestigious Texas Bandmasters Association "Meritorious Achievement Award." Mr. Rios also created and serves as the Artistic Director for the community group Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra in Harlingen, TX. He has also performed with this group at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago as well and has shared the stage with the World Famous Count Basie Orchestra. He is a member of TMEA, TBA, TMAA, TJEA, Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is the Past President of IAJE-Texas, TJEA, past TMAA Vice-President and served as the TMEA Texas State Band Chair. He is currently the TMEA Area G Band Chair. Mr. Rios has served as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia, Nevada, Utah, California, New Mexico and Indiana. He currently serves as an active adjudicator for UIL, DCI, and BOA.
