ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Bringing their architectural drawings to life, architects meet with clients and consult with engineers to design and plan the construction of structures such as commercial buildings, houses, and schools. They also design urban and public spaces like parks and sports stadiums. Architects frequently visit construction sites where they create and oversee construction projects from beginning to end. Architects must complete their bachelor’s degree, at least one internship, and pass the Architect Registration Examination for employment.

CARPENTRY Carpenters are involved in many types of construction projects, so students who enjoy hands-on learning and have the desire to build will gain job specific training for entry-level employment. Working on several projects throughout the year, students build frameworks and structures made from wood and other materials and bring their projects to life. Studying principles of construction, students can also prepare for a postsecondary degree in construction management, architecture, or engineering.

ELECTRICAL Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power, communication lines, lighting, and control systems in homes, businesses and factories. MASONRY

Masonry workers use bricks, concrete, wood, and other materials to bring ideas and construction plans to life. Including techniques on job-site safety, students learn blueprint reading, measuring, estimating, sawing, sanding, shaping and joint construction throughout the sequence of courses. The masonry pathway provides students the opportunity to gain employable skills directly after high school, or use what they have learned towards a postsecondary degree.

WELDING There are opportunities waiting for welders across the country in a variety of industries and settings. Employment can be wide ranging, including working in manufacturing shops, maintenance shops, steel operations, ship building yards or oil fields.

COLLISION-REPAIR SERVICES From repairing damaged caused by vehicle collisions to making cars look and drive like new, students in the Collision-Repair services track gain skillsets that can be taken directly to the job site.

Automotive body and glass repairers restore, refinish, and replace vehicle bodies and frames, windshields, and window glass.

Whether damages consist of fixing a cracked windshield or replacing an entire car door, students in the program work directly on vehicles throughout their program experience.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY As transportation needs continue to expand and flourish, so does the need for professionals with the appropriate credentials and knowledge.

Automotive service technicians and mechanics inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks. Working on traditional mechanical components, such as engines, transmissions, and drive belts, automotive service technicians must also be familiar with a growing number of electronic systems.

DIESEL AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGY Diesel engine maintenance and repair is becoming more complex as engines and other components use more electronic systems to control their operation. Rapid advances in diesel technology have created new careers and new demands in transportation, and employers in this industry are seeking applicants who are trained and certified.

Through this pathway, students study maintenance of diesel systems, learn about engine repairs, and learn to work on a vehicle’s electrical and exhaust systems.

FIREFIGHTER Working side by side with the Harlingen Fire Department, students in this academy will earn 468 hours of credit towards Level 2 of their firefighters certification. Students complete physical endurance training, principles of law, and public safety courses throughout their academy experience. Once in the field, these firefighters will respond to emergencies where life, property, or the environment is at risk.

REGISTERED DENTAL ASSISTANT Dental assistants are tasked with a wide range of responsibilities including preparing patients for procedures, exposing radiographs, taking impressions, and pouring molds. Classroom equipment is identical to what is found in dental offices. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings. People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care provided by these workers.

EMTs and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities.

Students take a sequence of courses that prepare them for their licensing exam as well as work out of a state of the art ambulance, providing an authentic learning experience.

LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE (LVN): Partnering directly with the largest healthcare entity in Harlingen, students in the Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program gain direct access to a hospital setting during the duration of their program. COMPUTER SCIENCE Computer Science will foster students creativity and innovation by presenting opportunities to design, implement and present meaningful programs through a variety of media. Students will collaborate with one another, their instructor and with various electronic communities to solve the problems presented. Data analysis will include the identification of task requirements, planning search strategies and the use of computer science concepts to access, analyze, and evaluate information needed to solve problems.
