From the Head of School I love this photo of our middle schoolers beginning their annual adventure trip. My thoughts turn to what they must have been feeling beyond the inspirational glory of a crisp fall day. It is a time in each year brimming with both apprehension and hope. There is the apprehension about the challenges, known or unknown, that lie ahead. Scaling a wall, building a fire, or taking a hike into unfamiliar territory, even the most confident of students is wondering just a bit about how they will measure up, and more than one are almost certain that they’re in way over their heads. Yet at the same time, there is the hope that comes from gathering in a circle, a ritual that affirms that we are in this together: classmates standing shoulder-to-shoulder; teachers ready to guide, model, or even step back and watch in service to their students’ growth; eighth graders, confident after years on this trip and summers away at camp, prepared to support and lead fifth graders who might be experiencing their first night outside the bustle of the city. The hope, the togetherness and the support, symbolized in that circle, help alleviate the apprehension and make this trip a huge success. This is equally true back on 111th Street where Harlem Academy’s commitment to challenge, growth, and collaboration remains strong throughout the year. That steadfast commitment from all of us—students, parents, teachers, volunteers, and supporters—produced the outstanding results described in this year’s annual report. I am very grateful to each of you for the part you played in forming our circle and making a difference in the lives of these young people.

School Creed I am bold and creative. I take opportunities to lead. I seek help when I need it. I am honest and reflective. I choose to do what is right Even when it is hard or no one is watching. I listen carefully. I speak kindly. I care for my community. I make the most of each day. I learn from my mistakes. I don’t give up.
