LIVING IN BALANCE
This school challenges high performers to reach even higher. Over the course of 8 years at Harlem Academy, a student will read 1,400 books, write for 3,000 hours, master mathematics through algebra I, and conduct hundreds of hands-on science experiments.
No child is ever turned away because of an inability to pay. While each family is required to contribute what they can, admission is need-blind and tuition is set on a sliding scale. We work with every accepted family to ensure that tuition is affordable.
Our challenging curriculum does more than keep bright students engaged; it pushes them beyond their intellectual comfort zones, promoting critical thinking, perseverance, and self-discipline.
At Harlem Academy, we strike a balance between intellectual and physical activity, structured and unstructured time, hard work and play.
Harlem Academy teachers get to know a child as an individual. Small class size allows for engaging instruction, with teachers taking lessons beyond standardized tests and instilling a lifelong love of learning.
More than half of Harlem Academy’s graduates received full-need scholarships to top private high schools, and every graduate has enrolled in a strong college-prep program.
“At Harlem Academy they expect a lot from you – even if you have an ‘A’ you can do better. Their standards are higher than your own. The things they teach you become second nature.” – H A R L E M AC A D E M Y S T U D E N T
“Harlem Academy prepared me entirely for the high school experience. I was amazed at the similarities between my old and new schools. The symmetry that I have observed in material and workload is incredible.” – H A R L E M AC A D E M Y G R A D UAT E ’ 1 2 , R I V E R DA L E ’ 1 6
Starting in grade one, students study poetry, play chess, conduct science experiments, and make presentations. In middle school, students study emergency medicine, debate foreign policy, and delve into Shakespeare and other literary classics typically found on high school reading lists. Regular day trips to New York City’s cultural institutions reinforce core curriculum, as do annual overnight trips to environmental centers and research universities. These experiences enhance curricular goals while inspiring independent thinking and teamwork, tools necessary for secondary school success.
Our extended school day, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., allows time for students to participate in advisory, arts, and clubs, such as Lego robotics, improv, and photography. Two hours of each day are spent in Central Park for athletics and recess.
“Harlem Academy shows kids a bridge to the world beyond. This school is a catalyst for producing thinkers.” – H A R L E M AC A D E M Y PA R E N T
