MALAYSIAN INTERIOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

Dear Members,

The first half of 2024 has passed in the blink of an eye, with so much happening. It has been an exciting six months and MIIP has gained excellent momentum in our pursuit of a more robust and vibrant interior industry. Over the last six months we have had the opportunity to present our members and industry partners with many business networking and collaborative initiatives that have contributed to the betterment of the industry and the outcomes delivered by our members and partners. These efforts are in line with our shared vision to become the leading association, and serving as a cornerstone of strength and authority in the interior builders’ industry.

Our Value Proposition Statement succinctly embodies MIIP’s essence as a respected industry organisation offering invaluable business insights, premier marketing opportunities, and fostering networking relationships among interior builders, designers and suppliers.

Just to reiterate, our targeted goals for 2023 to 2025 are:

• Membership Growth: Our aim is to double our membership subscription

• Enhanced Visibility: We plan to create greater awareness of MIIP through strategic networking events, engaging corporate visits, and collaborative initiatives with affiliated associations.

• Recognising Excellence: We are committed to acknowledging the exceptional quality of work and the high level of professionalism exhibited by our members through the MIIP awards.

• Interact with future specifiers, by connecting interior design students in universities and colleges by conducting product presentations and builders construction industry skills.

Speaking about industry skills, over the last few months, we have held several knowledge transfer and learning sessions that include The Fundamental Roles of Construction Project Manager, Fundamentals Of The Installation Of Large Format Thin Tiles Education, Kian Culture Sharing Visit and the SME CEO Forum, among others. MIIP also had a great time with several networking dinners and luncheons to bring members together to share experiences, business ideas and industry know-how. In fact, our networking night in conjunction with our AGM received a great turnout. We also participated in CIDB’s dialogue session entitled “Don’t Fall Victim to Interior Design and Build Scam” aimed at eradicating the Interior Builder and Contractor Scams that have happened frequently via social media. Member of Parliament YB Teresa Kok Suh

Sim and CIDB Chief Executive Dato’ Sr Mohd Zaid Zakaria officially launched the “Don’t fall Victim to Online Renovation Contractor Scam” awareness campaign video. This is a significant step in our fight against fraud and scams in the industry.

MIIP was also honoured to be invited to the Building Materials Distributors Association of Malaysia’s (BMDAM) 47 th Annual Dinner. I had the opportunity to attend this dinner with our Vice President, Jenna Wang. We had a very fruitful evening interacting and networking with industry partners and making MIIP presence more prominent within the industry. MIIP also welcomed delegates from the Guangzhou Design Week to Kuala Lumpur for a study visit. The purpose of the meeting was to explore how we can build a strong bridge of connectivity between MIIP members and our counterparts from Guangzhou Design Week.

I must say that MIIP is full of members with big hearts – we organised a visit to the En Yuan Old Folks Home and we had a good turnout. Our members spent some meaningful time with the elderly and brought cheer to 30 residents of the home. It was not only about giving, but also about creating beautiful memories and fostering bonds.

As we embark on the next six months of 2024, I urge you all our members to take on a more active role in MIIP and be part of our transformative efforts within the industry. Look out for more updates in the weeks ahead.

In the words of Nelson Mandela “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference”, so let’s all do it together!

I look forward to seeing all of you in our upcoming events.

LDHN E-INVOICE: Making it work for Businesses

SQL, a leading accounting software provider, organised a seminar to raise awareness and educate members on the e-Invoice system introduced by Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN). The event, supported by MRCA and MIIP, held at the premises of Hap Seng Star in Balakong, featured Christine Tan, the e-Invoice Ambassador from SQL. Members were exposed to the benefits of implementing the e-invoicing system in their businesses and learnt about implementation compliance and record-keeping as well as a structured approach in meeting their business obligations.

In explaining about the e-invoice, Christine said that the system can issue a document whenever a sale

or transaction is made, while also tracking expenses. The system provides a digital representation of a transaction between a supplier and a buyer, and replaces paper or electronic documents such as invoices, credit notes and debit notes. Christine also explained that the e-invoice system enables near real-time validation and storage of transactions, catering to businessto-business (B2B), business-toconsumer (B2C) and business-togovernment (B2G). E-invoice offers several prominent benefits such as seamless invoice processes, reduction of lost documents, facilitation of tax filing and cost & time savings with the reduction of human error.

The e-invoicing system is ideal for various types of businesses

such as commercial, non-profit organisations, societies, business trust, partnerships, and real estate, among others.

Christine went on to share that an e-invoice would be required for all foreign income received in Malaysia from outside Malaysia as a proof of income for tax purposes. She added that for any foreign profits or dividends received in Malaysia, the recipient is required to issue an e-invoice to document as a proof of income for tax purposes.

Where e-commerce is concerned, Christine said an e-commerce transaction can be between various parties, such as enterprises, households, individuals, governments, and other public or private organisations.

Hap Seng Star was the supporting partner providing the venue for this seminar, while other supporting partners included VentureGrab, Maxis Business, MRCA, SME Malaysia, Xilnex, Satoshi EduTech, Spectrum Outdoor, Exabytes and Zeoniq, among others.

Stone Empire adds Artistic Elegance to Malaysia’s Iconic Landmarks

In a milestone achievement, STONE EMPIRE, a leader in the Dimensional Stone industry proudly announced the completion of two iconic projects that exemplify their commitment to quality and excellence. These projects not only underscore Stone Empire’s prowess in delivering large-scale, top-tier and complex solutions but also mark significant growth and achievement for the company.

CREATING ICONIC MONUMENTS

Firstly, Kuala Lumpur’s newest landmark tower, the PNB 118, is now completed. The project, located at the center of the metropolis and signifying the seat of Malaysian independence took a surprisingly short 8 years to complete, even amidst the pandemic. With a record-setting 678.9 meters and 118 floors,

the tower is currently the tallest building in Asia.

Matching the architectural and engineering marvel of PNB 118, the interior and exterior walls at the public space are clad in thick Roman Travertine from Italy. This classic material has been in use for centuries in the historic Roman Coliseum which was made out of solid Travertine and is still standing to this day. Pairing this traditional material to the modernity of the building, Stone Empire employed large irregular tile sizes up to 2.5m with a custom thickness of 3cm. Delineating the walls and floors, the travertine was cut in two ways, with a vertical section exposing the trademark striations for the floor and the horizontal to bring out the more mottled appearance, which is referred to as fleuri-cut.

Showing its international pedigree, Stone Empire specified

the material with famed architect Fender Katsalidis from Australia way back in 2016. Katsalidis continued to work alongside Samsung, the main contractor from Korea. This project was Stone Empire’s first to feature stone finishing up to the BIM Level of Detail 500.

Another notable project that has seen completion is the upcoming financial hub in Kuala Lumpur - TRX. Stone Empire completed fit-out works for the TRX Exchange Mall which is owned and operated by the Australian firm, Lendlease. The mall was opened in November 2023 and displays the exquisite capabilities of Stone Empire in completing such a large scale project according to strict international requirements.

The stone was sourced throughout Turkey to achieve the most precise material for the perfect contrast between light and dark areas at the general corridors against the central corridors. Additionally, a grey diagonal movement was required to create a certain whirlpool movement at the two ends of the shopping mall. Utilising waterjet precision cutting, over 30 different module sizes was used in this project to follow the natural curvature of the mall.

Another shining testimony was the use of Agglotech white terrazzo, a zero resin material that

complies to environmental and health requirements in Lendlease’s global material standards. This is the first time a non-resin-based terrazzo was used for a large-scale project in Malaysia with over 8000 square meters installed.

A STERLING TRACK RECORD

The completion of the above projects follow a string of notable past projects, such as the Genting Sky Avenue Mall, The Curve at Mutiara Damansara and the Suria KLCC shopping mall. Hotel projects include The One and Only in Desaru, the Anantara, The St Regis Kuala Lumpur and the St Regis in Langkawi, Crowne Plaza and the Sofitel Damansara. Rounding up the repertoire is the Four Season Residences, One Menerung, Troika by Foster and Partners, The Oval, the Manor and many other highrise residences.

POWERED BY ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

These projects were only made possible by the extensive investment in high tech production facilities, upstream processing, a focus on upskilling and the use of technology and the technical know-how built from more than 3 decades of experience. Stone Empire’s technical capacity encompasses a staggering 18 bridge cutters throughout 3 separate factories, 6 dedicated drylay areas over 2500 square meters and marble gangsaws which enable the processing of materials directly from the source.

Although Stone Empire’s mega projects take centre stage, the company also specialises in high-end residences. Stone

Empire has a wide network that enables sourcing exotic materials from Brazil to Oman, a love for natural beauty and a touch of design appreciation harnessed throughout the company’s 31-year operation and collaboration with local and international designers. The excellent attention to detail trivializes challenging bends and terminations to achieve worldclass finish.

Stone Empire invites all to see the wonders of natural and engineered stones from NEOLITH Sintered Stone, AGGLOTECH Terrazzo, OKITE Quartz, and JANESIS Engineered Stone at our Experience Center in Rawang, which is open on weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and weekends by appointment.

The session was attended by approximately 30 people who were exposed to KIAN’s core values and dynamic approach to human-centric culture. The session touched on KIAN’s growth journey and its vibrant dynamics as a global peoplecentric organisation. The audience also heard about KIAN’s strategic core values and its impact on the people within the organisation as well as how the company supports its Warriors’ Development, as the people are referred to.‘

The attendees were also taken on a tour of KIAN’s Campus grounds and culture centre. Additionally, the audience was able to experience first-hand the many facets in KIAN’s approach towards managing talents and how a typical KIAN Warrior experiences the journey with KIAN as well as the momentum gained in its ESG and sustainability thrust. RIX 2023 – Where Great Minds Converge

Featuring world-class designs and innovations, delivering superior creation.

MIIP members shone bright at the 4th Reka Interior Exhibition (RiX) 2023 held at the KL Convention Centre. The three-day event was the official event held under the REKA Design Week (RDW), an annual affair for the interior designers’ community by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers.

The exhibition halls welcomed thousands of visitors comprising interior designers, industry buyers, traders, dealers, and influential delegates including senior management levels and professionals from the interior design fraternity. The event proved to be a showcase of global interior brands from Malaysia and overseas.

Themed Design Forward –Moving Past the Pandemic and Into the Future, and organised by MIID REKA, the commercial arm of MIID, the event was jointly organised by C.I.S and the Malaysian Institute of Interior Design (MIID). RiX proved to be more than a mere trade exhibition, providing a platform where audiences could connect

with established and recognised interior designers and exhibitors. This exhibition also provided a platform for the Malaysian interior design industry players to exhibit their products and services at the exhibition besides catering to the ever-increasing market’s need to be well-informed of the latest development in the industry.

“Acting as a bridge for innovative and creative design solutions for the exploration of creative and workable ideas, RiX enables experiments with the imagination and exposure of brands to a ready market while helping to connect discerning trade buyers and designers,” said MIID Deputy President IDr Ooi Boon Seong who is organising chairman of RDW.

“RiX is curated by the industry’s leading designers from the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), and this represents the trade exhibition’s creative platform for the exploration of ideas to meet commercial and residential needs which represent creative and

beautiful expressions of unparalleled design solutions,” he added.

C.I.S President Datuk Vincent Lim said: “RiX presents an opportunity for exchange and inspiration while showcasing new products and creations launched by various companies. Ultimately, RiX is a special showcase that enables the celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, design thinking and emerging talents.”

“RiX is held concurrently with HOMEDEC – being the iconic home design and interior exhibition aimed at enriching homeowners’ home shopping experience to a richer level while benefitting those who appreciate design of which they can freely explore at RiX,” he continued.

Visitors had access to both the RiX and HOMEDEC exhibitions at the KL Convention Centre.

The HOMEDEC exhibition was an avenue for people sourcing ideas and inspiration for home renovation or refurbishment while learning about the latest trends and ideas.

PAM Celebrates 101 Years of Excellence and a Legacy of Evolution

Charting the future of architecture in Malaysia, PAM’s President shares about the association’s vision for sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity.

In 2024, Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) celebrates 101 years of excellence in architecture. Over the decades, PAM evolved from a fledgling organisation to a dynamic force, driving innovation and professional growth. Its unwavering commitment to sustainability and ethical practices has shaped Malaysia’s architectural landscape. In honouring this milestone, PAM’s legacy of integrity and innovation continues to inspire the future of architecture in Malaysia. PAM President, Ar. Adrianta Aziz shares about how architects have been pivotal in Malaysia’s modernisation, despite the challenges ahead.

“Today’s architects face challenges that include sustainability and environmental concerns, affordable housing, regulatory and policy issues, technological integration, urban density and infrastructure as well as the preservation of culture and heritage,” explained Ar. Adrianta. He added, “Addressing these challenges requires collaboration and commitment from stakeholders across the architecture industry, government, academia, and the private sector. By fostering an environment that supports innovation, sustainability, and

inclusive growth, Malaysia can continue to harness the transformative power of architecture to build a brighter, more resilient future for all.”

Ar. Adrianta highlighted that PAM can enhance Malaysia’s urbanisation and modernisation by fostering collaborations, integrating innovative technologies, and advocating for inclusive design principles. According to him, one way to do this would be by engaging with policymakers, developers, and urban planners, whereby PAM can promote sustainable policies and innovative building practices. Additionally, championing smart technologies such as IoT and AI can improve urban living and infrastructure management. Universal design standards is another way PAM is set to ensure accessibility and community participation in the planning processes. These initiatives will help PAM shape a sustainable, innovative, and equitable urban landscape, driving Malaysia’s architectural excellence into the future.

Speaking about leading by example as an industry advocate, Ar. Adrianta said, “PAM can lead by example through educational initiatives and mentorship programmes, nurturing the next

generation of architects. By investing in talent development and fostering creativity, PAM ensures a skilled workforce capable of addressing future challenges.”

“Collaboration with academic institutions and research organisations can drive innovation in architectural technologies and methodologies. Embracing a culture of continuous learning and adaptation, PAM remains at the forefront of architectural excellence, guiding Malaysia towards a future where sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced urban environments flourish. Through these concerted efforts, PAM cements its legacy as a driving force in Malaysia’s architectural evolution for generations to come,” he continued.

With machine learning and artificial intelligence rapidly spreading across the industry, these technologies are poised to revolutionise the architecture industry by streamlining design processes, optimising building performance, and enhancing sustainability efforts. Ar. Adrianta clarified that through generative design, automation of repetitive tasks, and predictive analysis, architects can explore innovative solutions efficiently.

“AI-driven simulations optimise energy usage, material efficiency, and performance monitoring, leading to more sustainable buildings. Additionally, AI facilitates collaboration, real-time feedback, and data-driven decision-making, empowering architects to create impactful and resilient structures. As these technologies evolve, their integration into architecture becomes increasingly vital for an innovative and sustainable future,” he said.

With sustainability being a major factor across various industries in Malaysia, PAM is driving this emphasis through green certifications, policy advocacy, and educational programmes. By collaborating with stakeholders, PAM promotes sustainable materials, energyefficient technologies, and climateresilient design. PAM emphasises community engagement, long-term sustainability goals, and showcases green projects. By integrating sustainability into architecture, PAM shapes a resilient future for Malaysia, fostering inclusive, eco-friendly development for generations to come.

In the architectural field and industry, PAM is promoting sustainable design, advancing education, advocating supportive policies, fostering collaborations, and promoting diversity, PAM elevates architectural standards. It emphasises sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate-responsive design, while offering continuous learning opportunities and resources for architects.

“PAM advocates for policies supporting architectural innovation, encourages interdisciplinary collaborations to address urban challenges, and promotes diversity and inclusivity within the profession. These efforts promise a promising, innovative, and

sustainable future for Malaysian architecture under PAM’s leadership,” explained Ar. Adrianta.

Collaboration between PAM and MIIP holds immense potential for elevating both industries. Structured frameworks such as joint committees and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) can formalise cooperation, while integrated design workshops and sustainable initiatives can foster innovation. Crossdisciplinary training programs and advocacy efforts can enhance professional standards and policy influence offering benefits such as enhanced project outcomes, innovation, and professional growth.

“As PAM and MIIP collaborate, Malaysia’s built environment stands to benefit from cohesive, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing designs, promising a dynamic future for both industries,” highlighted Ar. Adrianta.

With a century-long legacy, PAM’s future focuses on leading the architectural profession towards sustainable practices, leveraging technology for progress, fostering diversity, and upholding ethical standards. Through these pillars, PAM envisions architecture as a catalyst for positive change, enriching communities and inspiring generations to come. As PAM charts this course, it invites all to be inspired by the past and build for a brighter, and more sustainable future.

OWLCEE Factory Tour and Networking Session

Founded in 2019, Owlcee Mills Sdn Bhd has excelled in understanding industry needs and creating reliable products. As Malaysia’s first eco modular carpet manufacturer, Owlcee strives to innovate modular carpet solutions that harmonise sustainable practices with exquisite design, fostering spaces that inspire creativity, efficiency and environmental stewardship.

With a factory located in Semenyih, Selangor, Owlcee has a production capacity of 3,000 m2 per day (8 hours), and has achieved SIRIM Malaysia standard certification, as well as accreditation by the Carpet and Rug Institute, USA.

Besides supplying to the Malaysian market, Owlcee also exports its carpets to many countries, such as the USA, Australia, India, Pakistan and

Japan, as well as Middle Eastern countries including Qatar, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

CONTRIBUTING TO GREEN BUILDINGS

“We aim to lead the carpet tile flooring market with our extensive experience and advanced manufacturing capabilities, producing high-quality, innovative, and sustainable flooring for all communities. Our highly skilled team members bring vast expertise to the field, working closely with clients to meet their requirements and add value to their projects,” said Nicholas Ng, Sales and Marketing Manager of Owlcee, during a factory visit by MIIP members on 24 May 2024.

“We produce carpet with at least 35% of the raw material made from post-consumer recycled content. If an architect or interior designer is looking for an environmentally friendly option, our carpets contribute 2

points to the Green Building Index (GBI),” he further explained.

CUSTOMISATION TO FULFILL YOUR NEEDS

“Owlcee has been in the market for 21 years, initially as an importer, and we are now proud to be a manufacturer. We discovered that many interior designers face long lead times, with shipping from China taking 3 weeks and production taking 4 weeks, resulting in a total wait time of 6-7 weeks for their carpets. Owlcee’s production time is only 3 weeks upon confirmation, and we also offer the additional perk of customisation,” said Nicholas.

After an informative presentation by Nicholas, the MIIP members were given a tour of the factory, where they marvelled at the machines at work and asked questions to better understand the processes.

Overall, the factory visit was highly informative, providing members with valuable new insights that were beneficial to everyone.

OSHWA & OSHCIM

The amendments to the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA) and the repeal of the Factories and Machinery Act 1967 (FMA) became effective on 1 June 2024. These revisions bring significant updates to OSHA. Key changes include new responsibilities and obligations for employers, along with increased penalties for non-compliance.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) - Workplace Assessment (OSHWA) and Occupational Safety and Health Construction Industry Management (OSHCIM) were formulated by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to help employers manage hazards in the workplace while complying with the occupational safety and health law.

Thus, MIIP organised a seminar on “Occupational Safety and Health in the Workplace” to brief members on the new amendments and additional requirements. This timely seminar was held on Thursday, 30 May 2024, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, and the speaker Hj. Mahasan Bin Yusuf, Deputy Inspector of Factories and Machinery, from the Construction Site Safety Section of the Ministry of Human Resources, shared his extensive knowledge with members.

OSHWA

The goal of OSHWA is to enhance workplace safety and health, particularly from a physical standpoint. OSHWA is an assessment carried out by employers, whereas the OSH Workplace Audit is the enforcement of workplace

OSH conducted by DOSH. Through OSHWA, employers are encouraged to assess the workplace and identify existing hazards. Following this, a DOSH officer will perform an inspection using the same checklist.

“It is recommended that employers conduct workplace assessments twice a year. This assessment can be conducted by the company’s safety and health coordinator (SHC) or safety and health officer (SHO). It must be completed before the OSH Workplace Audit by DOSH,” said Hj. Mahasan.

OSHCIM

It was found that addressing occupational safety and health risks during the planning and design stage is more effective, sustainable, and cost-efficient

than implementing changes later. Therefore, the OSHCIM Guidelines offer practical advice for clients, designers, and contractors on managing safety and health in construction projects.

These guidelines apply to those with legal duties under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Factories and Machinery Act, including clients, designers and contractors. They clarify compliance requirements and recommend actions proportionate to the risks.

“Across the US, 42% of construction fatalities between 1990 and 2003 were related to design issues. A 1991 study in Europe found that 60% of fatalities were the result of decisions made before the site work even began. Moreover, 63% of all fatalities and injuries can be attributed to design decisions and lack of planning,” said Hj. Mahasan.

IMPORTANT CHANGES

The most notable amendment is that the statutory health and safety obligations outlined in

OSHA will now apply to all workplaces. Consequently, the protections under OSHA will also cover remote working arrangements. Previously, the law only applied to certain industries, including manufacturing, construction, and wholesale and retail trades. Other major changes:

1. Risk Assessment Duty: Employers, self-employed individuals, and principals must conduct risk assessments for health and safety hazards at work and implement necessary control measures if risks are identified.

2. Occupational Safety and Health Coordinator: Employers with five or more employees must appoint a safety and health coordinator (SHC) if a safety and health officer (SHO) is not required. The SHC’s role is to manage occupational safety and health issues at the workplace.

3. Principal’s Duty for Contractor Safety: Principals must ensure

the safety of contractors, subcontractors, and their employees working under their direction. This duty impacts industries like construction that rely on contractor arrangements.

4. Emergency Procedures: Employers, self-employed persons, and principals must develop and implement procedures to handle workplace emergencies.

In conclusion, the recent amendments to the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA) mark a significant step forward in enhancing workplace safety and health standards across all industries. OSHWA and OSHCIM provide a robust framework for employers to proactively manage hazards and ensure compliance with the updated legislation. The seminar hosted by MIIP, featuring insights from Hj. Mahasan, underscored the importance of these changes and offered valuable guidance on implementing effective safety and health measures.
