Everyone Mature in Christ Inspired Purpose

Sept. 24-27, 2023

1:28
Colossians

Welcome to Harding University! This year, we celebrate a historic milestone in the life of this institution. In 1924, men and women of heroic faith, unwavering resolve and deep vision founded this Christ-centered University. Our Centennial Celebration commemorates their sacrifice and faithfulness. Most importantly, we give thanks to God who has shepherded us from the beginning.

The annual Lectureship has been a principal event every year since our founding. Our theme to inspire maturity in Christ is relevant and timely. As disciples, we aim to grow, aspire to multiply and desire to love. As a Spirit-led University, we build on a legacy of faith as we envision our second century. We seek to mature and grow our sphere of influence for the kingdom.

Lectureship Team

“Inspired Purpose: Everyone Mature in Christ” is our theme, borrowed from the inspired pen of the Apostle Paul who declared, “He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Col. 1:28). For 100 years the sole aim of this gathering has been to bless the church. This year we are offering 19 workshops in three days tailored to those who serve local congregations. Experts from all over our fellowship are here to inspire us in children’s ministry, youth ministry, marriage ministry, ministry to singles, missions, preaching, women’s ministry, ministry in small churches and more. We hope you’ll attend the special sessions on inspired spiritual practices, worship and disciple-making. You’ll be refreshed by the earnest messages presented by our students. On this special occasion of Harding’s centennial we’re also featuring pieces of our history and missions stories.

Maybe you’ll be most inspired by the rich fellowship, times of worship, reunions and choral performances or by sharing a cup of coffee with a former classmate. Whatever means the most to you, we hope you leave with an inspired purpose.

HISTORIES Inspiring

Reflecting on Our Past and Reimagining Our Future, Celebrating 100 Years

A centennial anniversary encourages reflection and contemplation of the rich history that has carried us to this moment. This year, Harding University’s Centennial Lectureship focuses on appreciation for those in whose deep footsteps we tread and reimagines this gathering for the next generation. During daily “Inspired Histories” sessions at 4 p.m., Dr. Monte Cox will reflect on the impact of three pivotal leaders in our past. In the future, Lectureship will continue to serve the church with a new format designed to equip ministers, shepherds, teachers and disciples in a trackfocused approach. Although Lectureship appears very different from 100 years ago, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). Likewise, our purpose is unchanged: to bring fresh vision, motivation and inspiration to those serving in the Lord’s church.

WORSHIP LEADER KEITH LANCASTER

Keith Lancaster is a worship minister, singer, songwriter, producer, workshop instructor, trainer and founder of Acappella Ministries. He believes the human voice is the greatest instrument ever created and that harmonizing hearts and voices in praise to the creator is the highest calling.

In 1982, he created Acappella Ministries in his hometown of Paris, Tennessee. Originating with the singing group ACAPPELLA, the ministry has grown to include AVB, Vocal Union, The Lancasters and Durant. Many of the groups have won prestigious awards including induction into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. His songs and arrangements have been used in various feature films and television commercials.

Lancaster and his wife, Sharon, travel the world extensively, equipping churches through Praise & Harmony SongFests. These training sessions produce materials to equip church members to sing contemporary songs and traditional hymns in fourpart harmony. Lancaster hosts Praise & Harmony

cruises with opportunities to enjoy congregational singing and ACAPPELLA concerts. In 2024, he will host a singing adventure in Israel. He also developed the annual Worship Leader Institute, a graduate-level bootcamp for song leaders.

When he isn’t traveling, Lancaster serves as worship minister for the Cullman Church of Christ in Cullman, Alabama. He and Sharon have four children and one grandchild.

Lancaster will lead the "Inspired Worship" track with practical advice for worship leaders about planning and leading corporate worship and incorporating new music.

STORIES OF MISSIONS

Following Christ’s Great Commission to expand the kingdom into all the world, missionaries in the churches of Christ have sacrificed and persevered through incredible hardship to share the Gospel. During this year’s Lectureship, we will share some of their stories that continue to inspire us today.

A Freed African to Free Africa — 1 p.m.

Alexander Cross and the Liberian Mission

The Restoration Movement's first missionary to Africa was Alexander Cross, a former slave whose freedom was purchased by a congregation in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. This presentation will share the inspiring story of a well-loved and godly preacher who served in Liberia at great cost to his family and himself. Until recently very little was known about this important figure in the history of Christian missions.

Freely You Have Received, Freely Give — 2 p.m.

Julius O. Beardslee and the Jamaican Mission

The Beardslees’ mission was the first successful foreign work of the Disciples of Christ/Christian Church/churches of Christ. Julius Beardslee first served as a missionary sent by the Congregational Church. When he became convinced of believers’ baptism, the American Christian Missionary Society supported him in his return to Jamaica. In less than 10 years, Beardslee added 1,200 members and planted 16 churches among freed slaves. Join us for this presentation to learn why many of these churches still survive today.

The Power of a Promise — 3 p.m.

William J. Bishop, a Missionary and Printer in Japan

As a high school student in Nashville, Tennessee, an orphan named William J. Bishop vowed that if God would help him get an education, he would spend his life working in a foreign country as a missionary. Assisted by James A. Harding, Bishop attended Nashville Bible School. He then became a successful preacher in Paris, Texas, and moved with his new bride to Tokyo. Bishop was a gentle and humble man who respected the Japanese and their culture. He was the first missionary of the churches of Christ to appoint elders in a newly planted overseas church. His life was spent quickly, but his work endured.
