differentiating influence: Harding Academy’s unique PreK-8 model.

When we walk our children into Harding Academy for the first time, usually for PreK or kindergarten, we share much in common: from the swell of uncertainty and excitement to our desire for our children to grow in their love of learning.

However, Skeen observes: “The narrative of what parents want—for their children to love to learn, to be good people, to care about those around them—can get lost in the hypercompetitive world of independent schools, especially during fifth through eighth grade.”

These are years wrought with confusing changes and new pressures.

But here, a village mentality develops, and students and parents travel together through some of the hardest, most change-riddled days surrounded by an engaged, hands-on, whole-hearted community. It’s one that forms in the earliest days and remains constant

Admittedly, we tend to think our kids are the coolest.

The maturity they exhibit is a result of their actually staying younger longer. It’s the “right kind of maturity,” Skeen says. They grow up with the guiding principles of a shared community code and with the support of a village that knows and cares about them, all the while becoming truly honorable role models.

From beginning to end—as we watch our eighth graders walk onto campus at the beginning of the year and then march the aisle to receive their diplomas in May—we see children becoming ‘people of the world,’ with smiles and heads held high, walking toward wide open opportunity and a life full of promise.

Academy, it is tempting to simply start at the beginning: to paint a picture of what the first days look like for our youngest students and their families, and to follow the narrative as they journey toward eighth grade.

Instead, let’s start there: eighth grade.

In classrooms, on stages, athletic fields, and in the community, we see young men and women who have begun to define their place in the world.

As they reenter Harding, coming back from the summer between seventh and eighth grade, “it’s like they just get it,” Head of School David Skeen says.

“You can see a developmental change, a deeper maturity. They come back really caring about each other, their parents, Harding, their siblings, and the community around them. And they want to do well.”

Skeen—and faculty, parents, and students alike—point to many factors that usher students to this moment, but all suggest there’s one clear

So, what is it all about? Skeen describes a unique experience in which Harding Academy middle school students model downward instead of mirroring upward.

“They interact with younger kids on the playground and in the play and other activities,” he says. “The intermingling with other ages is done intentionally. They find themselves in situations where they’re not only expected to set a good example, but where they discover they want to be good role models.”

By contrast, in schools that combine middle and high school, school culture often orbits around the high school. A younger student often finds himself looking up, searching for a role model, instead of striving to be one himself.

Skeen also emphasizes that a family’s choice to stay at Harding Academy through eighth grade is not one that compromises their child’s likelihood of admittance to the area’s most competitive high schools. “Our students graduate with a keen sense of who they are and what fits them best. Many options and opportunities await them, and they choose where they belong” says Skeen.

Parents of alumni reiterate the importance of a Harding graduate's developed sense of identity and confidence. When reflecting upon their children's Harding experience, particular strengths and gifts of this foundational model emerge.

Completing the PreK-8 model leads to an advantage gained during what Skeen and research point to as the three most critical years that happen in our model: when students look down and ask, “What does it mean to be a good citizen?” versus looking up and saying, “How do I be like that cool kid?”

“The choice to stay at Harding Academy through eighth grade for both of our daughters was one based on the desire to fully garner the benefits of a kindergarten through eighth grade experience. Through this experience Ellie and Claire were given the tools to excel at the next level through a solid academic background, various leadership opportunities, and the ability to expand their athletic talents. The ability to be a senior twice in your life is a component of the Harding journey that Ellie looks back on fondly, and we are certain Claire will as well.”

Students Gain Broader Insights with Cross-Curricular Approach

CROSS-CURRICULAR INSTRUCTION HAS GAINED

popularity in academia throughout the past decade or more, with its intentional and interdisciplinary approach fostering deep engagement and understanding for learners of all ages.

Teachers at Harding Academy are not new to the crosscurricular method. Some find it to be an almost natural way

How did you integrate the totem poles project across various disciplines?

Why did you choose the cross-curricular approach?

Any highlights or learning “wins” you could share?

SWIFT: Some children may connect to a particular subject more than another. With cross-curricular projects, we can engage students in a broader way to encourage these connections.

Also, when students (and adults) create something, they then own it. With this project, both the creation of the totem pole and the story give them ownership and hopefully greater engagement.

SWIFT: I’ve noticed that, later in the school year as we discuss ways to tell a story, a student may use a totem pole as an example. When both the totem poles and the stories are displayed in the classroom, students enjoy the feedback they get from visitors and parents. And, because of this project, their ideas and creations can be preserved just like an authentic totem pole.

of teaching, as kindergarten teacher Anne Swift notes: “Our world is complex and integrated. We believe our teaching should also reflect this reality. A cross-curricular approach reinforces how so many parts of our life and learning are intertwined.”

As an example, Swift and the kindergarten team, including Ann Lyle and Patti Wright, have integrated the study of totem poles across multiple subject areas, including language arts, social studies, art, and math. Here’s a look inside the project:

SWIFT: In language arts, students learn that totem poles are one way to represent a story and that stories are made up of characters and setting, conflicts or problems, and some kind of resolution or ending.

In social studies, they learn that totem poles originated in the Pacific Northwest and are an important cultural element of several Native American or First Nations tribes.

The stories carved in totem poles would be significant to the author, family, or tribe. Students also learn map skills using a globe to find the location of the Pacific Northwest.

In art, children create their own totem poles using paper, feathers, and small craft items based on their stories.

Finally, in math, we measure the height of a totem pole.

We believe that students learn best when instructional practices meet the needs of all students as individual and diverse learners.

These instructional practices include differentiated instruction that is designed according to student readiness, progress, and achievement, and is aligned with curriculum standards.

Academic enrichment should challenge students through accelerated learning experiences to advance critical thinking development.

Academic support should address the needs of students who require additional practice and alternative instruction to achieve content mastery.

We believe in a brain-based pedagogical model that is informed by current research in human development and neuro-cognitive sciences, which provides common language and consistent practices schoolwide.

We believe that inclusivity is important to the Harding Academy community.

Children learn from enhanced diverse experiences, opinions, and culture. By encouraging children to appreciate others’ differences, we are preparing them to become citizens of the global community and the complex, multicultural world in which they live.

We believe the Harding Academy student should strive to be a global citizen.

A global citizen is someone who is aware of the wider world and has a sense of his or her own role in the world.

A global citizen respects and values diversity, has an understanding of how the world works, works for social justice, participates in the community from the local to global level, is willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place, and takes responsibility for his or her actions.

We believe leadership development is important.

We want to develop confidence in our students.

We want our kids to understand the importance of service to others.

We want to foster in our students the strength of character to become self-disciplined, thoughtful servant leaders.

We believe community engagement is important.

We want our students to develop a deeper connection to a global community.

We want our students to develop empathy and openness.

We want to develop responsible, caring citizens of the world.

We believe that parent education is an important component of the Harding Academy education.

Parent education fosters community-building in a fastpaced world, where parents and teachers connect to share their concerns, discoveries, and successes in multiple forums.

We understand that the PreK through eighth grade years are not only the most formative learning years of a child’s life, but they are the most formative parenting years in a family’s life as well.

This approach allows faculty to share years of experience and observation working with the unique developmental challenges of each grade level, and it provides a human connection in an increasingly digital world.

THE WORK ACCOMPLISHED TOGETHER DEFINES AN EXCITING FUTURE FOR HARDING ACADEMY.

faculty and staff at Harding Academy embarked on a collaborative professional development process each Wednesday morning with one objective in mind: to build the foundation for a three- to five-year strategic plan through an inclusive and cumulative set of conversations about how to best serve our student population in the future and to be ready for that future when it arrives.

Faculty members and administrators devoted more than 30 hours of collaboration over the course of the year to fulfill this important charge. Objectives were refined and processes were planned – all reflecting the voices of students, parents, faculty and staff, alumni, trustees, and grandparents.

Wednesday mornings proved powerful and fruitful as part of Harding Academy's desired evolution to become one of the best independent school learning environments not just in Nashville, but in the country.

The work accomplished together defines an exciting future for Harding Academy. The primary priorities moving forward include training around differentiation and co-teaching in the classroom, inclusivity training and curricular review, developing a dynamic parent education program, and, most exciting of all, developing a signature program around community engagement, leadership, and service. They all directly meet Harding’s mission to educate and inspire young people to become thoughtful, creative, lifelong learners and self-disciplined, responsible, caring citizens.

Harding Academy's commitment to serving students remains at the forefront of everything we do, and the following initiatives represent the faculty’s “statements of belief” developed over the course of the year.

WORDS TO LIVE BY Frist Grant Enriches Educators’ Learning and Lives

THE COMMUNITY CODE articulates what is expected of all Harding Academy citizens: our students, parents, faculty, and staff.

Teachers introduce the Community Code when students first enroll at Harding, and they refer consistently and directly to these seven core tenets through the eighth grade.

wish. Last summer, Anne found herself standing in Potter’s beloved Lake District in northwest England. She was able to experience the landscape that inspired such Potter classics as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Visiting the Lake District also gave Anne an opportunity to experience the landscape of the romantic poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. She hiked and visited museums in Yorkshire where the Brontë sisters were inspired. This excursion also allowed her to explore the National Trust sites and to venture along the Jurassic Coast in the South.

Anne reports that she took heed of Wordsworth's calling to, “Let nature be your teacher.”

Anne’s travels were made possible through the Frist grant which provides teachers with an opportunity to pursue an interest or activity for personal growth. These interests may include activities outside the traditional professional development setting such as traveling and participating in special programs or personal projects.

Anne says she is very grateful to have been awarded this opportunity and will treasure the memories as a gift of a lifetime. Of course, as with all of her literary experiences, Anne can’t wait to share this gift with her Harding family, especially “her kindergarten children.”

Because of this award, the enchantment Anne experienced visiting the Lake District in Northwest England will soon be seen in the twinkling of their eyes.

teacher for more than thirty years, about her favorite books, her eyes light up. Her love for teaching fresh new kindergarteners is second only to her love of literature. It is obvious that this love of books greatly influenced her calling to the kindergarten classroom. She wanted to make sure “her kindergarten children,” as she affectionately calls her students, experienced this magical world of literature.

Her former students all cherish books today because of the excitement with which Anne brought to life all the characters in a story. One alum, now a mother herself, remembers how engaging Anne was in the classroom and how she made the children feel as if they were actually a part of the story.

She made reading magical! Now this mom reads to her son the same way and his eyes show the same enchantment.

This parent says the influence of Anne’s teaching style and her love of books stays with you forever.

What some may not have known about Anne, however, was that the ultimate desire on her bucket list was to travel to the area where her favorite author, Beatrix Potter, was inspired to spin her imaginative tales of “Peter Rabbit” that children continue to enjoy.

Thankfully, through the generosity of the Frist family via the Grant for Faculty Enrichment, Harding Academy was able to grant Anne this special

JONES: It's hard to pick my favorite Harding memory, but some of my best times at Harding were in Mrs. Wright's dance classes. At the time, we had the option of taking PE or dance, and I always chose dance.

She made our classes so much fun and put together a wonderful dance concert at the end of the year. It is so fun that she is still at Harding.

JONES: I think my favorite room at Harding is the library because it is very much the same as it was when I was in school. The Harding Book Fair still brings back great memories since it has changed very little.

Every once in a while one of my children will come home with a book that is dedicated by or to someone I remember. It is such a treat when that happens.

Ryan Schmadtke ‘ 18 is also a nine-year graduate of Harding Academy and will attend Montgomery Bell Academy in the fall. As described by the parents of Schmadtke’s kindergarten buddy, “We saw you go out of your way to be kind to Ricky on several occasions. No doubt this made his first year in a new city/new school that much better. We feel lucky that Ricky had such a thoughtful eighth grade buddy!”

In addition to the backstage work, productions are generally choreographed by students collaborating with Dr. Bell. These students are responsible for conceiving all dance numbers and teaching the cast. Depending on the production, there may be students who serve as assistant directors, helping with everything from researching the thicknesses of foam rubber sheets to directing portions of the play.

The choreographers and assistant directors meet each Friday for lunch in Dr. Bell’s room and plan out the schedule for the next week.

Every aspect of a Broadway production is part of the Harding theater experience, presenting countless opportunities for students to engage on and off the stage. At Harding, talent is nurtured and theatrical gifts flourish, and every student who participates in a production is a star who shines by doing.

This is an enormous responsibility and why the stage manager usually has at least two assistants helping to oversee the production.

The stage manager also supervises a stage crew of anywhere from six to 16 students, depending on the number and complexity of the sets. Students run the light and sound boards, as well as the spotlight and sound effects. All of these roles involve following the play carefully and being responsible to execute dozens to hundreds of different cues.

CHAMPIONING EXCELLENCE Student-Athletes Lead the Way to Season Titles

THREE HARDING ACADEMY TEAMS CELEBRATED CHAMPIONSHIPS in 2017-18, thanks in large part to exemplary student-athlete leadership. The girls lacrosse, basketball, and cross country teams all earned championship titles and proudly continued Harding’s tradition of excellence in athletics.

LACROSSE The number-three seed Harding girls lacrosse team edged out the competition to win the 2018 Middle Tennessee Lacrosse Tournament. The team, led by Coach Leslie Embry and Coach John Waddell, ended the exciting season with a 15-7 win over Brentwood Middle School.

A strong foundation of eighth graders, including top scorer Cate Frist, helped lead the team. “This lacrosse season has been a great experience,” Cate said. “The coaches and other players make both the practices and games so memorable and enjoyable. I think that, because our team has been together for so long, we have built such a great camaraderie.

“The coaches’ […] energy and love for the game really rubbed off on the whole team. Coach Embry has a great attitude and always makes us believe that, anything we set our minds to, we can complete. She took this mentality into the tournament and helped us look at each game with a positive attitude.

Teammate and fellow eighth grader Rosemary Frederiksen reflected on becoming both a champion and a leader. “The lacrosse program at Harding has been a very memorable experience. My seventhgrade year, I made varsity, and it was a rigorous season. With only four eighth graders, the seventh grade had to step up and be leaders for the team.

“Once our first practice started this year, Coach Embry had an amazingly positive attitude, and from the start, she believed in us. Her optimistic attitude rubbed off on each and every one of us. As eighth graders, we had the honor to be leaders for the team, and I think we were very successful in doing so. We took this season one game at a time, and finally, when the tournament came around, we were ready. Winning the tournament was a true reflection of our attitude and mentality the entire season.”

service projects in my time at Harding’s middle school. Every time, I feel like a good person, knowing that I have made a difference in my community or in the lives of a complete stranger. At Second Harvest Food Bank, my class Maria Weir ‘18 and has packaged thousands of pounds of Catalina Flores ‘26 food every visit in the short amount of time we have. During the year we donate food to the bank as well, and with every soup can or cereal box we POUNDS OF bring in, we know we are helping FOOD DONATED someone in need. At the end of the trip, we were quizzed on what we learned and had the opportunity to earn some keepsakes like a t-shirt or keychain. However, even without a reward, making a difference in our community and just doing honest work for a good cause is rewarding enough. I leave the boat or Second Harvest or any of the service projects feeling like a better person, and I know that I’ve brought happiness to someone else’s day.

SOLAR ECLIPSE On August 21, 2017, students, parents, and faculty gathered at Kever Park to witness the solar eclipse. At Nashville’s latitude and longitude, the sun was 100 percent obscured, making it an incredible opportunity for Harding students to witness a remarkable celestial event. The eclipse began at 11:58 AM and ended at 2:54 PM, with maximum coverage occurring at 1:27 PM. An event like this was truly a once-ina-lifetime opportunity.

GRANDPARENTS CHOCOLATE During this annual Harding tradition, students in kindergarten through fourth grade performed original songs and essays. Grandparents enjoyed songs from the Harding music program. After the program, grandparents and students had milk and cookies together.

SONGWRITERS NIGHT On February 27, the Harding Parents Association hosted its annual Singer Songwriters in the Round for 150 lucky Harding parents. Henderson Theater was transformed as attendees were transfixed by the music of Bob DiPiero, JT Hodges, Jamie O’Neal, Lee Miller, Lucie Silvas, special guest artist Eric Paslay, and surprise guest artist Keith Urban.

GENERAL'S JAMBOREE The General’s Jamboree was held on a hot September Saturday in Kever Park.

Students enjoyed games, face painting, and the chance to dunk Head of School Dave Skeen in the faculty dunking booth.

Every spring, students in grades 5-8 invite grandparents and special friends to a breakfast featuring chorus, band, and strings performances. After the performances, grandparents and their grandchildren view student artwork and enjoy light refreshments.

ART SHOW REUNION On what turned out to be a gorgeous spring evening, alumni from four decades gathered under a tent in the middle school courtyard with current and former faculty and staff, serenaded by live music while watching Troy Duff ‘84 create a stunning graffiti piece for the school. 2018 NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS JEFF MOATS Jeff Moats is a Partner at the Shopping Center Group, where his primary focus is on strategic planning, site selection and deal execution for national retailers and restaurants throughout Tennessee. Jeff is a 1994 graduate of Harding Academy and has been actively involved with the school’s annual golf tournament since its inception. Additionally, Jeff has served on Harding’s Alumni Board since 2015. Jeff and his wife, Sarah, are the proud parents of two daughters (Ella Grace ‘27) and Lark (3 years old).

TIME TO RISE Harding Academy is now in its eighth year of hosting students from the Time to Rise program. Time to Rise is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping at-risk third to fifth graders to bridge academic learning through the summer in order to best enable each student to reach their full potential. Harding is the only Time to Rise program offering English-language learning (ELL) and is the largest of the four Nashville sites, which also include Ensworth, Harpeth Hall, and Montgomery Bell Academy. This year Harding had a record number of 63 children enroll in this amazing program. Each day, children are fed breakfast, lunch, and two snacks, with academic offerings in reading, writing, STEM, civics, and communications along with various enrichment activities such as swimming, art, field trips, and other activities. The program runs through the entire month of June.

HEAD OF SCHOOL DONOR DINNER On October 3, Head of School Dave Skeen hosted a dinner at The Bridge Building honoring Harding Academy. Attendees were patrons who generously gave $3,000 or more to Harding during the ‘16-’17 school year. Infinity Events and Catering provided the airy space, excellent service, and delicious food and beverages for the evening, complete with fabulous views of downtown Nashville from just across the Cumberland River.

PATRICK SCHUERMANN Patrick is a research assistant professor of educational leadership and public policy at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Patrick has authored numerous articles and commissioned reports and books on leadership.

He earned his BS and MA degrees from Furman University and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Vanderbilt University.

BRANDT SNEDEKER GETS A GRIP ON GOLF AND THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE

For his ongoing contributions to the world of golf and education in the Nashville community and beyond, Harding Academy is honored to name Brandt Snedeker as its 2018 Distinguished Alumnus.

IT WAS OVER THREE DECADES AGO, BUT FIELD

parent proud never gets old. His grandmother, a golf course and restaurant manager, introduced him to the game and drove him countless miles to practice and to play until she passed during his eighth grade year. Snedeker’s father, Larry, encouraged him to play at a pace that would not hold up other golfers, making his game one of the fastest moving on the courses today.

He was also supported by his older athletic brother, Haymes.

The game of golf captivated Snedeker from his earliest memories when he wrote a childhood paper about the PGA Tour not too many months after he learned to ­­—SNEDEKER ON THE REQUIREMENTS OF grip a pencil. His ascension GOLF’S CODE OF ETHICS to the ranks of professional golfer has been peppered with valuable advice from many along the way. These important figures include everyone from the late Arnold Palmer to Mrs. Rodgers, a former music teacher at Harding Academy. From the legendary Palmer, he learned that “even if you fail at what you are doing, as long as you believed in yourself and did everything you could to succeed, then it was a success. You will fail in life-it’s how you respond to those failures that will define you.” From Mrs. Rodgers he learned the importance of perseverance. He tried playing

day at Harding Academy still brings back fond memories for Brandt Snedeker. Time spent outside with teachers and friends made the 50-yard dash, sack race, and heated relays memorable. Grass stains ran rampant across knees like badges of honor. Brandt still has keepsake field day ribbons stashed at home.

At some point, the young Snedeker found himself with a golf club in hand, a swing that came naturally, and a love of the outdoors that never wavered. It would be easy to say that the rest is history. However, that would be egregiously inadequate for a man, husband, father, athlete, and philanthropist whose story is still being written. Snedeker’s field day ribbons soon found themselves in the company of other accolades and trophies during and after his years at Harding Academy. Snedeker remembers feeling supported and recalls with vivid detail some of the teachers who impacted his young life by not only nurturing his strengths but also supporting him when mastering a new skill did not come easily.

His coming-of-age story is built upon a solid work ethic and belief system that he inherited from various family members and mentors along the way. At his mother’s pawn shop (his attorney father has claimed that Mrs. Candy Snedeker always had a fondness for “baubles”), a young Brandt Snedeker witnessed strangers selling wedding rings to make ends meet. His mother, Candy, has always been a force in his life, and their relationship is proof positive that making a

Snedeker Golf Scholarship at Vanderbilt University: This scholarship makes men’s golf the university’s first fully endowed athletics program.

Friends and fellow alumni from Harding Academy and Montgomery Bell Academy, where Snedeker graduated in 1999, describe Brandt as fiercely loyal to friends, family, and his hometown, Nashville. The Snedeker family was one of the city’s first group of volunteers to step in and offer help when a flood wreaked havoc on many neighborhoods and businesses in 2010.

His philanthropic efforts were just beginning.

A former classmate says, “He worked hard to get where he is, and he has maintained a sense of humor throughout the pressures, ups, and downs that come with being a professional athlete. He takes none of it for granted. This is why he is big on paying it forward.”

Brandt admits his oldest child, Lily, has no interest in golf, but his youngest,

his belt.

Many suggest that Brandt’s connection with his roots makes him the southern gentleman he is today.

Mandy Snedeker stated in an interview that Brandt was a “door opener” even from the first date and remains more of a giver than a taker in all aspects of life.

Unless a golf trophy is involved. In that case, all bets are off.

As far as the evolution of his game and the practice regimen that is required to be at the top, he says, “Some of the things I do today are still the same and others have changed. In golf—just as in life— you can’t be afraid to evolve and change certain aspects that help you improve without losing sight of who you are.”

Austin, “likes to play golf and has a knack for it. But I will never push him to play. I want them both to find their own passion.”

When asked what he considers to be his greatest accomplishments besides being a husband and father, Snedeker replies, “Getting the Distinguished Alumnus award from Harding Academy.” This humbling gratitude shows that his roots are even more valuable to him than his storied career.

Still on his bucket list is winning a major championship. We look forward to knowing that when it happens, that trophy will sit near some well-loved Harding Academy field day ribbons.

ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAME The Annual High School Alumni Basketball Game was held on Sunday, November 19, in Roberts Gymnasium. After four exciting quarters, the blue team edged out the red team to become the champions. With the Harding Pep Band keeping the energy pumping, alumni students, parents, and friends gathered on their old stomping grounds to enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie once more.

The G. Alexander Martin Event (G.A.M.E.) originated as a way to pay tribute to G. Alexander Martin '04, who was in the fourth grade when he passed away in 2000. In December 2015, the Alumni Board unanimously voted to rename their Annual Golf Classic as the Harding Academy Memorial Golf G.A.M.E with proceeds from the event going towards scholarships for families who have demonstrated need.

CAREER DAY The Harding Academy Alumni Association hosted its annual Career Day for eighth grade students on March 15.

the clarinet; however, the sounds were not music to everyone's ears. But she supported and encouraged him to continue playing.

With the encouragement of family and an insatiable drive to succeed, Brandt Snedeker set himself on a golf quest filled with many peaks and valleys. Golf possesses an unspoken written code of ethics. You are expected to call penalties on yourself and play with integrity every time you walk onto a course. Snedeker’s father instilled in him at an early age the importance of the rules and honor that goes into playing golf the right way.

“It’s important for all young kids to have that integrity instilled in them,” Snedeker adds. His wife, Mandy, says that he is an “even better father than golfer,” which speaks volumes for a man with eight PGA Tour wins under

Many siblings go through their years at Harding Academy together before going on to pursue their dreams. Their unique pursuits take them in different directions and their dreams are realized on different stages. However, the Schultz brothers, Chandler (‘13) and Garrett (‘15), have always had the same stage in mind: The baseball field.

On February 12, 2018, MCCLAIN PORTIS ‘14 and TY ALLEN ‘14 were inducted into Montgomery Bell Academy’s Totomoi Society. Induction into Totomoi is the highest honor students and faculty can earn at MBA. Members of this honor society lead in academics, athletics, service to the school, and community service.

Chandler just completed his freshman season at Belmont University. He pitched more than 23 innings as a freshman and also earned a place in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League for the summer of 2018. Garrett a rising senior at Ensworth has been committed to travel ball and will sign with Xavier (Cincinnati) in November 2018. He looks forward to playing outfielder there when he begins his collegiate career.

PHILLIP SCHOLER ‘14 was the news editor and one of the associate editors for the Bell Ringer for the 2017-2018 school year at MBA. DENEE STEWART-FREEMAN ‘14 was named one of only fifteen Haslam Scholars in May 2018. She recently graduated from University School of Nashville and will be a freshman this fall at The University of Tennessee’s premier academic program as a Haslam Scholar.

LILY WILMOTH ‘16 was one of five Harpeth Hall student athletes named to the All Region Lacrosse teams for the Central North Region.

C.H. HENRY ‘17 played principal roles in Footloose (MBA/HH musical) and in This Random World (HH production) this past school year. He was part of the cast in MBA/ HH’s Animal Farm one-act that won first place in the state of Tennessee and which advanced to compete in the Southeastern Theater Conference in Mobile, Alabama.

C.H. was offered Wilson Grants at Georgetown University and at Boston Conservatory through MBA in history and voice. He was inducted into The International Thespian Society and earned Summa Cum Laude for National Latin Exam.

WEATHERLY SPENCE ‘17 just finished her freshman year at Harpeth Hall. As a member of the HH varsity golf team, Weatherly made a clutch putt that guaranteed HH’s spot in a playoff round, which broke a three-way tie and launched Harpeth Hall to advance to State.
