DEAR HARDING ACADEMY COMMUNITY, Dear Harding Academy Community, It is our pleasure to present the 2018-2019 Impact Report celebrating the incredible generosity and devotion of the Harding Academy Community. Through fundraising efforts including the Harding Fund, the Parents’ Party, the Annual Golf Classic, Songwriters Night, and the Harding Art Show, we are consistently reminded of the extraordinary group of individuals, corporations and foundations we are privileged to call supporters. The importance of these funds cannot be overstated. Annually, the Harding Fund supports operating expenses which include additional professional development for our teachers, maintenance and upkeep of our physical plant, innovative tools for the classroom, and additional resources for our theater and athletic programs, along with so much more. The Harding Academy student experience would simply not be complete were it not for the funds raised through the Harding Fund. To everyone who made an immediate and lasting impact on Harding Academy through the Harding Fund, we thank you!

When our faculty and staff give at 100%, we are at our strongest. This demonstrates our faculty’s commitment to students receiving the education and learning experiences needed to put them on a path for success. THE HARDING ART SHOW 2019 Each year the Harding Parents Association (HPA) hosts the Harding Art Show, the oldest and longest running schoolsponsored fine art show in Middle Tennessee. Since its inception 44 years ago, the Show has grown in prestige and attendance with an estimated 3,500 guests who joined us for the 2019 Harding Art Show in May. Another record breaking year, this year’s Show, chaired by Elizabeth Broome and Tysha Huber, presented over 70 artists from 14 states over the course of three days, with 200+ volunteers working around the clock! The Harding Art Show produces a tremendous impact, both financially and through community building. In May 2019, the show impressively sold over $700,000 in artwork - setting a Show record as its highest total to date - with Harding Academy receiving 30% of the net proceeds. With these proceeds, the HPA has been able to support every aspect of the student experience at Harding Academy. These items include the scoreboard and cover in the gymnasium, a school bus, renovations of the front lobby and gym lobby, the fencing and gate for the Highway 70 property, along with a lead gift of $1.5 million to the Foundations for the Future capital campaign following the motto of the HPA: Parents Helping Parents.
NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDS Harding Academy is thankful to the many generous donors who have established named endowment or scholarship funds by donating an initial or total gift of $25,000 or more. Active funds as of October 2018 include: Black Family Endowed Scholarship Fund The Black Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2005. This endowed scholarship is based on financial need.
The Caldwell Endowed Scholarship Fund for Minority Students This fund was initiated in 1982 by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Caldwell III and named in honor of Thomas’ father, Mr. Tom Caldwell. This scholarship is awarded to a minority student from an economically disadvantaged family.
The Don Schwartz Distinguished Educator Program Harding Academy’s tradition of excellence includes leadership by the late Donald S. Schwartz, who served as Head of School from 1997—2006. His tremendous contributions to the school included bringing guest educators to campus to inspire our community’s continuous learning about new and effective educational approaches. In his memory, this program annually brings a distinguished educator to Harding to speak to the faculty, board, students, and parents.
Faculty Enrichment Endowment Fund Harding Academy encourages the enrichment of faculty and staff through continuing education and other activities. This fund was created to provide faculty with summer enrichment opportunities and the ability to pursue an interest or activity that results in personal growth, including travel, special programs or projects, and professional development.
The Dr. Jerry S. Sutton Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Sarah Frances Mudter Fine Arts Endowment Established in April 2004 and made possible through a bequest by Sarah Frances Mudter, this endowment provides support for the fine arts.
The Ed And Hettie Stuart Endowment Recognizing that the strength of any great school lies largely in the members of the faculty and staff, The Ed and Hettie Stuart Endowment was established in December 2007 to endow a fund to recognize any members of the faculty or staff who have gone above and beyond in their service to the school.
The Harding Academy General Endowment Fund
This fund was established in 1989 in honor of the late Dr. Jerry S. Sutton by his wife, Barbara. Each year it is awarded to a student that has been determined to be in need of financial aid.
The Harding Academy General Endowment Fund was established to support the long-term financial stability of the school. A portion of net annual earnings may be used when needed for operations.

The Margaret Brownlee Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 in honor of Miss Margaret Brownlee, a beloved Harding teacher who passed away in 1986. This endowed scholarship fund honors Miss Brownlee and her devotion to her students during her tenure at Harding Academy. The scholarship, based on financial need, is directed toward students in the upper elementary grades.
The Manning Family Fund was generously donated by David and Lisa Manning and their family in 2013. The Manning Family Fund for Lower School Educator Professional Advancement was estabilished to support professional development of Harding Lower School educators. The Manning Fund has been given in honor of former Head of School, Ian Craig (2006—2016), for his significant contributions to the Harding community. 20
NAMED AWARDS At Harding Academy, we celebrate learning and accomplishments with a variety of academic and community awards. Below are the awards that have been named for special individuals who have had a lasting impact on the school. The Andrew Potanin Award This award is presented each year at graduation to an eighth grade student who, in the opinion of the Harding faculty, shows potential in creative writing pursuits. The award is not based on academic honor or achievement; rather, it is presented to a student who possesses great interest and promise in his/her ability to express himself/herself in poetry or short story format. This award was established in memory of Andrew Potanin ’81. The Camille Gift 4th Grade Reading Award* This award is presented to the student who has displayed not only a passion for reading, but the
ability to inspire others to share a love of reading, just as Camille did. This student displays the characteristics desired for this award not by the number of books read in a year, but by an enthusiasm for the multi-faceted elements and depth of great literature. This award was established in memory of Camille Gift, 4th grade teacher at Harding from 1998 to 2017. The Carol Chambers Art Award* The Carol Chambers Art Award is named for former art teacher Carol Chambers, who served Harding for more than four decades. The award is presented to the student who combines clear talent potential with
active participation in, and enthusiasm for, the visual arts. The student receiving the award possesses a special combination of ability, desire and participation in the art program at Harding. The Pam McKnight French Award* This award honors former long-time Harding French teacher Mrs. Pam McKnight, who was a beloved champion of all points of education. The student demonstrates proficiency in not only the French grammar and punctuation, but also an enthusiasm and curiosity for the language and a deep passion for the culture. The Geraldine Swystun English Award* This award is given at graduation to the eighth grade student who has displayed a desire and an exceptional ability to communicate through the spoken and written word. He/she has developed outstanding skills in expository and creative writing. *Named for former Harding Academy educators.
