A Note from the Director The Hardee Center for Leadership and Ethics in Higher Education is committed to continuing the tremendous legacy of Dr. Melvene Draheim Hardee. The Hardee Center’s purpose is twofold. The Center supports the Higher Education program at Florida State University and the students, faculty, staff, and friends of the program. The Center also coordinates all alumni engagement and advancement initiatives, while promoting the “LifeNet.” During the 2017-2018 academic year, the Hardee Center saw several changes while continuing to grow and flourish in all aspects. In January Dr. Mary Coburn retired from her position and I had the honor of stepping into the Hardee Center director role. In June we also welcomed Michaela Shenberger as Associate Director of the Hardee Center. From orientation for the new students in August to our induction of Hardee Fellows and 60th-year celebration of the Higher Education Program in September to networking at NASPA in March, we have been busy learning, teaching, connecting, and recognizing! We welcomed a new set of graduate students this fall and are excited to share Hardee’s legacy with them. We look forward to some new initiatives in building on the legacy of Hardee and the Higher Education Program at Florida State University. The Hardee Center appreciates the constant support we receive from the LifeNet. The Center and the LifeNet would not exist without YOU! As we move forward, we would love to have you get involved! BRITTANY BREWSTER Miami, Florida Graduate Assistant & Instructor at the Leadership Learning Resource Center After her graduation from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Science in Communication, Brittany moved to Tallahassee in 2011, to pursue her Master's in Higher Education. Brittany returned to Miami and served the University of Miami as the Assistant Director of the Butler Center for Service and Leadership for 5 years. During this time she was awarded the University of Miami Division of Student Affairs Laurel Award in 2018 for her exceptional work with students and served on the NASPA Florida Board of Directors as the Treasurer for 3 years.

COURTNEY B. FRANCIS St. Thomas Virgin Islands Assistant Coordinator of Night Staff for University Housing Courtney graduated from the University of Arizona earning two degrees; a Bachelors of Science in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences, as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. During her time as an undergraduate, Courtney served as the president of the Mu Eta Chapter of Deta Sigma; a peer mentor and resident assistant. Courtney also earned her Master's in Higher Education and Postsecondary Leadership from Arizona State University. Prior to joining us at Florida State Universtiy, she worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician and Clinical Interventionist at the Southwest Research and Resource Center.

HEATHER EPSTEIN-DIAZ Miami Beach, Florida Analyst in the Office of Institutional Research Heather is a two-time Florida State University graduate. She first graduated from Florida State in 2010 with a Bachelors of Arts in English and Humanities, and again in 2012 with a Master of Library and Information Science with a focus in Information Science.

Meet the Cohort JULIE LEBLANC Florida Graduate Assistant & Instructor at the Leadership Learning Research Center After graduating from Florida State with a Bachelor of Social Work in 2011, Julie attended Loyola University Chicago for their Master of Education in Higher Education, from which she graduated in 2013. Prior to her return to Florida State University, Julie worked at both The Pennsylvania State University and the Unversity of Tampa.

KENDRA BUMPUS Thayer, Illinois Graduate Assistant for the Higher Education Program Kendra graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelors of Arts in University Studies in 2004 and from The Ohio State University with a Master's of Arts in Higher Education in 2006. After her graduation, Kendra served as a Residence Life Coordinator for Arizona State University and as an Area Coordinator for Clemson Univesity. Before eventually making the move to Florida State University, where she served as an Assistant Director for a number of years before beginning her journey as a doctoral student.

MICHAELA SHENBERGER Boone, North Carolina Associate Director of the Hardee Center for Leadership & Ethics in Higher Education Michaela graduated from Appalachian State University in 2015, with a degree in Business Administration and Sustainable Development in Agriculture. After graduation, Michaela moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University's Higher Education Master's Program. Like many folks, Tallahassee seemed to stick and Michaela decided to continue her education at Florida State and pursue her doctorate.

NICOLE DIBARTOLO Galloway, New Jersey Assistant Director for the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities A graduate from both Rutgers University and the University of Florida, Nicole is a recipient of the 2014 Advisor of the Year Award from Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of Housing Second Mile Award from Florida State University in 2017. Nicole is pursuing her doctorate degree while also serving Florida State University as the Assistant Director of the Office of Student Rights and Responsbilities.

PEI HU China-Wuhan Graduate Assistant for Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Prior to graduating from Florida State University with her master's degree in 2017, Pei attended Jianghan University earning her BA in Chinese Literature and Linguistics. Pei has served as a graduate research assistant in the Leadership Learning and Research Center and been recognized as a Florida State Seminole Torchbearer.

ROSE REZAEI Starke, Florida Assistant Director for the Center for Health Advocacy and Wellness As a two-time graduate of the University of South Florida, Rose served as the Healthy Relationship Adviser in the Gender and Sexuality Center as well as an Area Director for the Office of Residential Life at Carleton College. Since Rose joined us at Florida State University, ey has been recognized with the 2015 Uphold the Garnet and Gold Award as well as the Mover and Shaker Award from the Division of Student Affairs in 2018.

Meet the Cohort ANTONIO RUIZ EZQUERRO Graduate Assistant for the Center for Health Advocacy and Wellness (CHAW) Antonio is a 2017 graduate from James Madison University, earning a degree in Marketing. As an undergraduate Antonio served his institution as a Leadership Counselor. He was also an active member of Alpha Pi Omega – a coed service fraternity, and the vice president of Media for the Advertising Club.

ASHLEY ARCHER Leesburg, Georgia Graduate Assistant for the University Honors Program In 2018, Ashley graduated from Georgia Southern University with honors, earning a degree in Political Science. During her time as an undergraduate, Ashley held the position of president of Phi Eta Sigma for two terms; communication co-chair for the Community Engagement Board; Alternative Break Board co-chair; service-learning facilitator; and sat on the local Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. In addition to her involvement, Ashley earned many accolades such as University Honors Program Scholar for completing the Honors Program and writing an undergraduate thesis; the John F Nolan Hall of Leaders Award; the Higgs-McCarter Active Citizenship Award in 2016 and 2017, and two Phi Eta Sigma National Scholarships.

BRIANNA RAY Â St. Petersburg, Florida Organization Development and Engagement Graduate Assistant for the Student Activities Center (SAC) Brianna graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2017 with a degree in Human Communication and minors in Leadership Studies and Event Management. As an undergraduate student, Brianna was a Peer Mentor, worked as a Resident Assistant, and served as the Recruitment Captain for Knight-Thon.

BROOKE SCHMALHORST Orlando, Florida Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities Brooke is continuing her education at Florida State University, after graduating with a degree in International Affairs and Criminology in 2018. In addition to her involvement in FSU’s chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, Brooke sought to serve her sorority community further by becoming both a Recruitment Counselor and Peer Mentor. Eventually, she also became the Director of Recruitment, working closely with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

CAMERON JERNIGAN Ahoskie, North Carolina Graduate Assistant for Sustainable Campus Cameron graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018 with a degree in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication.

During his time at UNC, Cameron was involved in a number of capacities, including as the Communication Committee Chair for the Student Organization Council; as a Career Peer Mentor; Leadershape On-Site Coordinator; Student Ambassador for the Carolina Men of Color Engagement Office; and NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program. Prior to his graduation, Cameron was also honored with the Outstanding Achievement in Service and Leadership from the Department of Communication at UNC.

CHRISTINA ARCHIPOLO Commack, New York Graduate Assistant for the University Honors Program Christina is a 2018 graduate from the University of Delaware, where she earned degrees in Communications and Italian. During her time at the University of Delaware, Christina served as an Alternative Breaks Trip Leader; Student Centers Associate; Honors Peer Advisor; Honors Program Writing Fellow; and Student Centers Programming Intern. In addition to earning the cum laude designation, Christina also earned the Robert J. DiPietro Award for Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Linguistics and the Blue Hen Leadership Program Scholar Award.

Meet the Cohort DANNY DOMINGUEZ Houston, Texas Community Engagement Graduate Assistant for the Center for Leadership and Social Change Danny graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Marketing and Management in 2018. Along with his academics, Danny was involved with Baylor’s Student Activities Office as a Baylor Line Tradition Coordinator; as well as the Christian Leadership Institute serving as the Director; and New Student Programs. Throughout his time at Baylor, Danny was constantly recognized on the Dean’s Academic Honors List.

DASHAWN DILWORTH Memphis, Tennessee Homecoming Graduate Assistant for the Student Activities Center As a 2018 graduate from the University of Tennessee, DaShawn earned a degree in Kinesiology. During his time at the University of Tennessee, DaShawn worked as a Resident Assistant; Orientation Leader; Campus Event Board Member; and Leadership Service Ambassador. In addition to these involvement opportunities, DaShawn was also a Leadership Knoxville Scholar; Alex Haley Scholarship Recipient; and was recognized with a Volunteer Award.

DAVID SCHIELER Mankato, Minnesota Graduate Assistant at the Center for Leadership and Social Change David graduated summa cum laude from Minnesota State University— Mankato in 2015 with a degree in Communication Studies. During his time at his alma mater, David served as the Student Government Association Vice President; The University Student Homecoming Chair; and the Vice President of Recruitment for the Interfraternity Council.

DYLAN BATEMAN Paragould, Arkansas Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Global Citizen Certificate Graduating from Arkansas State University in 2016, Dylan earned his degree in History with minors in Spanish and International Studies. While attending Arkansas State, Dylan became a Global Student Leader as well as the Interfraternity Council President. Dylan was also recognized as both Greek Life Outstanding Junior and Outstanding Fraternity Man.

ERIN JONES Memphis, Tennessee Graduate Assistant for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Erin attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, graduating in 2018 with a degree in History, earning the honor of cum laude. As a highly involved student, Erin participated in the Multicultural Mentoring Program; served as the Success Skills Chair for Women of Promise; and as both the Secretary and Community Service Chair for the First Year Studies Mentor.

FRANKIE DIFRANCO Medford, New York Assistant Coordinator for University Housing Frankie studied Elementary Education at Northern Arizona University, graduating in 2016. During his time at Northern Arizona, Frankie was incredibly active on campus, working as a Resident Assistant; Summer Conference Assistant; Community Development Assistant; Executive Director for Relay for Life; and NRHH Vice President of Recognition. In addition to these roles, Frankie also served as the Blavin Scholar Association Vice President. On a national level, Frankie held two ACUHO-I internships at North Carolina State University and Arizona State University. Frankie also earned a number of awards including the Who’s Who on College Campus Award; Distinguished Senior for the College of Education and the Most Valuable Player Award at the RA Banquet.

Meet the Cohort HANNAH MIZELL Niceville, Florida Outreach and Assessment Graduate Assistant at the Career Center In 2018, Hannah graduated from the University of West Florida with a degree in Arts Administration with the recognition of magma cum laude.

While attending the University of West Florida, Hannah was very involved with the Kugelman Honor’s Program serving as an Honors Mentor; Honors Lead Mentor; Residence Assistant for Honors; and worked as a Student Desk Assistant with UWF’s Department of Housing and Residence Life The program recognized all her work with the Outstanding Honors Student Award.

JADA TOLEDO Franklin Park, New Jersey Service Learning Graduate Assistant at the Center for Leadership and Social Change Jada graduated from William Paterson University in 2017 with a degree in Psychology. During her time at her alma mater, Jada worked as a Resident Assistant as well as an Orientation Leader.

JESSICA WEBBER Dover, Tennessee Graduate Coordinator for Biological Science Jessica graduated cum laude from Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in Social Work in 2015, before continuing her education at Florida State University earning a Master’s in Social Work in 2016. Jessica was highly active on Florida Gulf Coast’s campus, including serving as the Vice President of the FGCU Gender Equality Organization; Student Government Senator for the College of Health Professions and Social Work; Secretary of the campus’s Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society; and Publicity Chair for the Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success. Jessica was also recognized with the Sigma Alpha Pi National Engaged Leader Award and the FGCU Presidential Leadership Certificate.

JOHNNI LOGUE Â Bedford, Pennsylvania Graduate Assistant for the Bryan Hall Learning Community As a 2018 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Johnni holds a degree in Chemistry with the honor of magna cum laude. While attending USC, Johnni worked as both an Orientation Leader and Orientation Team Leader, in addition to being a University 101 Peer Leader. She was also recognized with the Leadership Distinction in Professional and Civic Engagement.

KATIE DEWALL Assistant Coordinator for University Housing In 2017, Katie graduated cum laude from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Marketing. During her time at UCF, Katie worked as both a Resident Assistant and Orientation Leader. She was also recognized as a First Year Scholar.

KIAH ALBRITTON Â Murfreesboro, Tennessee PeaceJam Coaching Coordinator for the Center for Leadership and Social Change Kiah attended the University of Tennessee, graduating in 2018 with a degree in Communications. During her time at the University of Tennessee, Kiah was incredibly involved, serving as both the Team Leader and Student Director for Ignite; First Year Council Advisor for the Student Government Association; ME4UT Recruitment Chair; and as a Leadership Knoxville Scholar. Kiah was recognized with the Extraordinary Campus Leadership and Service award.

Meet the Cohort KIMBERLY PACK Academic Program Specialist in the Computer Science Department Kimberly graduated from Florida State University magna cum laude with a degree in English Education in 2014. As an undergraduate, Kimberly worked as a Night Staff Supervisor and earned the John Simmons Award. In 2015, Kimberly was awarded with the recognition of High-Impact Teacher.

LONDON JUDGE Topsfield, Massachusetts Graduate Assistant for the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Living Learning Community In 2017, London graduated from Davidson College with degrees in English and Political Science. While attending Davidson, London was involved in a number of capacities, including serving on the executive board of her eating house; as the Speaker's Chair and Chief of Staff for the Union Board; and the Project Manager of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. She was also very involved in the Admission Office working as a tour guide and spending three summers working for July Experience.

MARC WHITTAKER BENNETT Â Miami, Florida Graduate Assistant for the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement Marc graduated from Bethune-Cookman University with a degree in Business Administration. During his time at Bethune-Cookman University, Marc became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; was involved in Black Males in Higher Education Think Tank; and served as the Vice President of Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success.

MAYA AZAR Roanoke, Virginia Graduate Assistant for the Office of National Fellowships Maya graduated from Virginia Tech in 2017 with a degree in Human Development. During her time at VT, Maya worked as a Resident Assistant and as a Student Alumni Associate. She was also recognized with the Ryan C. Clark Award for Most Outstanding Spirit through her involvement in Housing and Residence Life.

SAMANTHA COLE-REARDON Marshfield, Massachusetts Graduate Assistant for New Student and Family Programs Graduating in 2018 with a degree in Psychology, Samantha attended Bridgewater State University. During her time at Bridgewater, Samantha worked as both an Orientation Leader and Family Ambassador, in addition to her job as a Resident Assistant. She also served her sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon, as the Vice President of Membership Development. Samantha was also recognized by her alum mater through the Bridgewater Award for Student Excellence; Student Employee of the Year; Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Student Award of Excellence; and through induction into the Order of Omega, a Greek Honor Society.

SARAH MICHAEL ANDERSON Tallahassee, Florida Admissions Officer for the College of Medicine Sarah Michael is a recent graduate of Florida State University, earning cum laude degrees in Family Child Sciences and Psychology in 2017. As an undergraduate at FSU, Sarah Michael worked as an Orientation Leader and as a University Ambassador. She also served as the President of the Episcopal University Center Campus Ministry. During her time at FSU, Sarah Michael was inducted into the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society, Seminole Torchbearers, and the Garnet and Gold Key Leadership Honorary. Upon graduation, Sarah Michael became an Honors Finisher, completing the curriculum of the University Honors Program.

Meet the Cohort SATCHA SANON North Miami, Florida Center for Leadership and Social Change, Scholarship and Recognitions In 2015, Satcha graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Telecommunications. During her time on campus, Satcha served as the Treasurer and Fundrasing Chair for her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Pageant Director of Club Creole; Ambassador for the Involvement Team; and Vice President of the Beta Eta Sigma Honor Society. She has also been recognized throught eh Dr. Michael Bowie Involvement Award; NPHC Director of the Year; and the Unsung Hero Award during the Black Community Awards Ceremony.

STEPHANIE URBINA Hialeah, Florida Graduate Assistant for the Career Center’s Employer Relations Team, College of Engineering In 2018, Stephanie graduated from Florida State University with a degree in International Affairs. During her time as an undergraduate, Stephanie served as the Vice President for Queer, Trans, and Intersex People of Color; Executive Member of the Student Diversity and Inclusion Executive Council; Fire Marshall, Business Manager, and Maintenance Representative for the Lundquist-Hovda Scholarship House; and the University Relations Chair for the Hispanic Latino Student Union Executive Board. Stephanie also received a number of accolades including the Charles and Lee Craig Scholarship; Angie Cintron Memorial Scholarship; Martin Luther King Jr. Book Award; Southern Scholarship Foundation; and the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement Scholarship.

TYLER TREESE Delaware, Ohio Graduate Assistant for University Housing Tyler earned his degree in Social Work from The Ohio State University in 2018 with cum laude honors. During his time at OSU, Tyler was both a Peer Leader and Orientation Leader, as well as an intern for Student Wellness Alcohol Prevention and Education.

Conference Experience

The Well-Traveled Backpack Sophia Rahming, Ph.D. Candidate

Most days my backpack is a scholastic repository for books, pens, highlighters, and the mandatory umbrella; this is Tallahassee. Lately, however, my backpack has taken on new identities – seasoned traveler, global wanderer, and conference aficionada (pronouns she, her, hers). Within the last 12 months, my backpack traveled to New Orleans, Atlanta, Boston, Eugene, San Francisco, Phoenix, Washington D.C., Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich, Bregenz, Vaduz, Berlin, Bayern, and New York (twice) and it took me along.

It’s with me now in Newport doing its usual job, holding books, pens, a laptop, but there’s also something new inside - the learning materials from my recent Faculty First-Look experience at NYU Steinhardt. NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites scholars of color who are approaching the end of the Ph.D., Ed.D., or other relevant terminal degree study, to participate in Faculty First-Look (FFL). Faculty First-Look prepares invitees who are on the job market to more effectively apply for faculty positions, particularly in disciplines and fields housed within the Steinhardt School.

It’s with me now in Newport doing its usual job, holding books, pens, a laptop, but there’s also something new inside - the learning materials from my recent Faculty First-Look experience at NYU Steinhardt. NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites scholars of color who are approaching the end of the Ph.D., Ed.D., or other relevant terminal degree study, to participate in Faculty First-Look (FFL).

Faculty First-Look prepares invitees who are on the job market to more effectively apply for faculty positions, particularly in disciplines and fields housed within the Steinhardt School.

I have the distinct honor of being one of 31 NYU Steinhardt Faculty First-Look Scholars (2018-2019) selected through an extremely competitive process from institutions across the U.S. We participated in our first FFL teaching/mentoring/dialogue sessions during the second week of October, 2018. The three days in New York were filled with seminars, professional mentoring, insider tips, and critiques of Scholars’ faculty job search portfolios with a focus on CV’s and cover letters. NYU Steinhardt hosted a social for the FFL Scholars where Rubén Blades, NYU Steinhardt’s 2018- 2019 Scholar in Residence, shared his life story. Rubén graduated from law school surmounting multiple obstacles, once in his home country Panama and then again in the U. S. Rubén is also a famous singer, songwriter (he wrote for Michael Jackson), actor (you may know him from the Walking Dead), musician (17 Grammy nominations), activist, and politician, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban, salsa, and Latin jazz genres. The SA pro in me was in nirvana. This is what we research and work for – the student who experiences multiple obstacles but triumphs in the end, grounded in their identity, motivated by social justice, and committed to making the world a better and more just place. Rubén’s story is powerful.

My backpack went to each session and met Rubén, too. You can’t see it in the picture but it was there soaking up all of Rubén’s and Stella’s wisdom. That’s what conference aficionadas do. I’m looking forward to the next FFL Scholar sessions in March. My backpack is, too. Please check out the links provided about NYU Steinhardt FFL. Practicum Experience

Tampa, Florida to London, England Brittany Devies

Back in August, Michaela posted in the LifeNet Facebook page, asking for alumni to comment when and where they had their Practicum experience. As I read through the comments, I was struck by the decades of richness this experience has provided members of our LifeNet community. Decades of engaging with institutions and connecting with other professionals has created the unique history of our Practicum experience here at FSU. My cohort and I were incredibly fortunate to join this tradition alongside Dr. Kathy Guthrie in trips both to Tampa, Florida and London, England.

In Tampa, we were greeted with warm weather and a wide variety of institutions: Hillsborough Community College; New College of Florida; and University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP) Our group learned so much from these institutions and were even able to visit the Ringling Museum of Art. Often, with the busyness of our schedules balancing work, classes, and life, our cohort does not often get intentional time together. These days in Tampa were just that; time for us to be together, enjoying the company of one another, laughing and learning. I am so thankful for the opportunity to end our first year having this experience together.

Summer

2018 2018

In London, we were greeted with royal wedding celebrations to begin our trip. While in London, our itinerary included Wadham College in Oxford, founded in 1610; St. Mary’s University; Goldsmiths; and University of Kent. Our tours of Oxford left us all in awe of the history significance of this place we often read about in our textbooks. We spent time exploring Canterbury while visiting the University of Kent. We ate fish and chips, caught a lot of trains, and quickly learned the ins and outs of the Tube. We saw parades celebrating the royal wedding and enjoyed Matilda and Lion King on Broadway. We were lucky enough to learn from the outstanding staff at the FSU London Study Centre and had the experience of a lifetime.

Our cohort researched a variety of topics during our practicum visits. My group specifically looked at a comparing student engagement at higher education institutions in the United States and England. Other groups explored college financial access; diversity and inclusion; activism; and the perpetuation of ableism. I learned so much about my area of research and much more in speaking directly with professionals at each of the institutions. They were incredibly insightful and honest with us about their experiences. We were even fortunate enough to meet some LifeNet members along our travels.

Overall, I am incredibly thankful to have had this experience. As I continue to speak about my practicum experience with other professionals in our field, the consistent response is “what an amazing experience that must have been.” Thank you to Dr. Guthrie for her diligent planning and commitment to making both local and international practicum incredibly rewarding. Thank you to the incredible institutions and professionals that hosted us during our visits. Finally thank you to Florida State and the Higher Education program for making this a pillar of our program.

Internship Experience

Credo Higher Education Consulting Greensboro, North Carolina Ryan Hopkins

Whenever I share with someone that I am in a higher education master’s program, it is pretty standard to hear a phrase like “You’ll be surprised by how fast it goes!” or “Before you know it graduation will be here!”. While I always assumed that was true, I did not entirely believe it until now as I am heading towards the ladder end of my second to last semester. From the beginning of last year, each week seemed to speed up and up, carrying me into our practicum course abroad in London and then a summer internship.

Somehow, I blinked a few times along the way and now I am only one semester away from graduation.

While things may be going quick, I know for sure my experiences in and out of the classroom are preparing me to best support students in the ways they need.

Before beginning this semester, I spent the summer at higher education consulting company in Greensboro, North Carolina called Credo. I knew last year that I wanted to look for a unique internship that would challenge me in new, positive ways. Credo checked all the boxes for what I was looking for; they primarily work with smaller private/independent universities which I was eager to learn more about. Credo has a few categories their various services fall into, and these include Strategic Planning, Enrollment Growth, Student Success, Leadership Development, and one of their specialized offerings, Campus Master Planning with their in-house architecture team. Credo gave me numerous opportunities to learn in all of these areas and the company was more than generous with their time and resources. I had the chance to travel to other campuses to aid in the important work of understanding what the students need from their university to be successful. I left feeling as if I had a whole new set of tools in my toolbox moving forward; I feel more equipped and capable as I continue into their field of higher education and student affairs.

One of the biggest takeaways from working at Credo is seeing the value of independent higher education first hand. Many of these campuses are smaller and may offer a specific program or be the only university in a rural part of a state. For a variety of reasons, the universities Credo works with usually serve students who are getting their only chance to go to a college. It could be because they are geographically bound, for finical barriers, or because of a program of study restriction. Regardless, this means it is critical that these universities are operating at their best to ultimately serve students the best to ensure they can thrive and make their way to graduation day. Sometimes this looks like residence hall improvements, or maybe a new internal structure in how academic advising is organized. I found it incredibly rewarding to work alongside these universities to become the best they could be all in the name of student success.

Internship Experience

Dawg Camp Extended Orientation Program University of Georgia Brittany Devies

The first time the LifeNet became real for me was during my summer internship search. I was lucky enough to interview with four members of the LifeNet at four separate institutions during my search. I can still remember Eddie Higginbotham IV telling me over the phone, “The LifeNet is real.� At the end of my search, I was lucky enough to get an offer at the University of Georgia (UGA) with their Dawg Camp Extended Orientation program. I consider myself even luckier to have had the chance to work for a member of the LifeNet, Kaitlyn Shepard, this summer. Kaitlyn taught me so much about the work we are so fortunate to do and how to serve this profession well.

Summer

2018

During my months at UGA, I was able to help coordinate and implement five Dawg Camp special programs and their flagship program, Discovery. I specially worked with two special programs, one focused on a week-long Athens, GA immersion experience and another focused on helping set transfer students up to succeed in their transition. Finally, I was able to work with the incredible staff to execute Dawg Camp Discovery. I developed and implemented trainings, activities, facilitation guides, and discussion curriculum for Dawg Camp student staff in areas such as career development and panelist training. With a staff of 60 and over 350 students served, I was consistently in awe of the impact this program has at the institution.

Some of the most rewarding moments of my summer came in reading the post-program assessments. I was so proud of the student leaders who make this program as impactful as it is, especially when I heard Dawg Campers say that they wanted to be a Dawg Camp Counselor the next year and create this experience for the next incoming UGA class.

When students talked about the impacts of the curriculum or the way their worries were eased because of their Dawg Camp experience, I was reminded of how important this work is.

My summer was filled with passionate UGA students, an incredible co-intern, a dedicated supervisor, great food, better memories, and a renewed sense of purpose in our field. Go Noles and Go Dawgs!

Reflection on the Hardee Fellow Ceremony Since first arriving at Florida State, I have heard about Dr. Mel Hardee.

The presentation of her legacy to students in the higher education program has been intentional and impactful. Knowing the foundations of our community has made me feel deep ties to it, as well as pride and privilege of being a part of the LifeNet. The Hardee Fellow Induction Ceremony cemented those ties.

Dr. Laura Perez-Falkner spoke on how the Lifenet is made strong by our shared values of staying connected and sharing our community. We are connected to and through each other, ultimately creating social capital felt through a nation-wide web: the LifeNet. I believe the simple act of her words, acknowledging both the social capital and potential within our community, had a powerful impact.

The keynote speaker for the event was a doctoral student, Anthony Marshall Jr. who asked the audience to define our “What would you do moments?� These are the times in our lives when we have had to make decisions and judgment calls; when we have chosen to engage by speaking up or calling out social injustices. I appreciated his comments on how leadership is a process and anyone can learn to be an effective leader. He specifically emphasized leadership is not positional; an important reminder, especially for the young professionals in the room. He ended his powerful speech by tasking the audience with ensuring that our leadership moments continue on and turn into sustainable movements.

After the awarding of the Hardee Fellow designations, a panel representing the LifeNet from across generations, shared several pieces of advice, that as a first-year student, I took to heart. The first of which was the encouragement of being open to possibilities, not only in your career but in all aspects of life. All those who participated on the panel noted how looking back they never would have predicted their path. The other piece of advice was the encouragement to stay connected to those in your cohort. The panel stressed the effectiveness of the LifeNet and impressed the idea that it is a real and valuable resource at any point in your career.

Throughout the entire event, Dr. Hardee’s reach was clearly visible.

Whether it was in words spoken by former students or in the academic achievements of the individuals honored, there is no doubt that her legacy continues to shine here at Florida State.

This project also expands beyond Dr. Hardee to encompass as many histories as possible from our LifeNet members on their journey and experience at Florida State and beyond.

MENTORSHIP

of Graduate Students As requested by several of the now second-year cohort of master's students, the Hardee Center will be establishing a mentorship program aimed at connecting current graduate students with professional LifeNet members.

We hope to launch this incentive in the Spring of 2019 and allow students and mentors to be matched on a variety of elements, including: identity, geographic location, life experience, focus area and institution type. We will be reaching out to interested folks, in January!

This distinction honors alumni who have graduated in the last 10 years, and who have had a significant impact within their profession, contributed to their community, and show promise of continued success.

Eddie Higginbotham IV received his master’s degree in Higher Education from the College of Education in 2014. Prior to attending Florida State, Eddie was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Northwestern State University of Louisiana where he was recognized at the local and national level for his contributions. Upon graduation, Eddie worked as a Leadership Consultant and Expansion Coordinator for his fraternity’s international headquarters, visiting over 50 institutions across the country and assisting in the establishment of several new chapters.

At Florida State, Eddie served as the Associate Director of the Hardee Center for Leadership and Ethics in Higher Education where he worked with Vice President Emeritus, Dr. Mary Coburn. In this role, he coordinated professional development opportunities for graduate students in the Higher Education program and facilitated alumni engagement initiatives. Eddie contributed heavily to the revitalization of the Center and of its alumni board, which he now serves on. As a graduate student, he immersed himself in as many practical experience as possible holding five internships during his time in the program. Eddie served as the Master’s Chair for the Higher Education Student Association and was recognized as a Hardee Fellow and Seminole Torchbearer.

Following graduation, he continued at Florida State as the Assistant Director of New Student and Family Programs.

Eddie transitioned to the University of Georgia and was then promoted for his work with the school’s extended orientation program. He led the program to unprecedented growth and national recognition through the creation of new programs and initiatives, access points for involvement, educational opportunities, funding sources, and external partnerships.

Eddie is an active member of NODA, the Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education and serves as the Extended Orientation Network Co-Chair. He was the Educational Session Chair for the 2016 Extended Orientation Institute and hosted the Institute in 2017. He has also received the Excellence in Program Leadership Award from the Network and is currently co-authoring a chapter on extended orientation in an upcoming NODA publication.

Additionally, Eddie currently serves on the 2018 NODA Annual Conference Planning Committee as a Co-Chair for Educational Sessions and Evaluation and was recently selected to host the 2020 Annual Conference. He has presented several educational sessions at NODA events, volunteered for many initiatives, and has been the recipient of the NODA Outstanding Mentor Award.

Eddie currently serves as the Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he was recruited to assist in the enhancement of the school’s orientation programming and holistic transition experience. Dr. Cameron C. Beatty Cameron C. Beatty, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Department. Dr. Beatty teaches courses in the undergraduate leadership certificate as well as conducts research with the Leadership and Learning Research Center. Dr. Beatty's research foci includes exploring the intersections of gender and race in leadership education, leadership development of students of color on historically white college campuses, and global leadership education for undergraduate students. His recent publications center on topics that include: supporting undergraduate Black womxn through Sister Circles, gains in leadership capacity for high achieving Black men leaders, and supporting undergraduate men in leadership education through liberatory pedagogy. He is a scholar passionate about deconstructing race, systemic racism, and hegemonic masculinity in postsecondary education environments.

Prior to joining the faculty at Florida State University, Dr. Beatty was an assistant professor at Salem State University in the higher education student affairs program. He was also the Coordinator and Lecturer for the Leadership Studies Program at Iowa State University, where he was not only responsible for the administration of the certificate program, but also directed the Global Leadership Study Abroad Program to Sweden and the Vermeer International Scholarship Program. Dr. Beatty has experience in fraternity and sorority advising, campus programming boards, and supervising academic peer mentors.

Dr. Beatty was named a 2018 ACPA Emerging Scholar designee. He completed his Ph.D. at Iowa State University in the Higher Education Administration Program with a concentration in Social Justice in 2014. Cameron received a B.S. in Sociology and a M.S. in Higher Education Student Affairs, both from Indiana University, Bloomington (IUB)

Dr. Marianne Lorensen Dr. Lorensen is a Specialized Teaching Faculty member in the Leadership Learning Research Center. Prior to arriving at FSU in 2018, Dr. Lorensen’s career presented her with opportunities to work as a leadership educator and student affairs professional at several other notable public universities. She has a B.S. in Family & Consumer Sciences Education from the University of Kentucky, an M.Ed. in Youth & Family Education from The Pennsylvania State University, and an Ed.M. in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her doctorate in Human Sciences and Leadership Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2014.

Dr. Lorensen loves leadership learning both in and out of the classroom and particularly enjoys providing her students with opportunities for experiential learning. Her areas of scholarship and expertise include youth leadership development, college student leadership development, service-learning, group and team dynamics, and curriculum/program development. She would love having you stop by her office to discuss any of these topics or talk about college basketball, your favorite books, or your favorite podcasts.

Dr. Sally Watkins Dr. Watkins is a visiting teaching faculty with the LLRC. She has taught a variety of the LDR courses offered at Florida State. Her research focuses on the history of leadership education at the collegiate level, socially responsible leadership development, and leadership learning and pedagogy. Additionally, Sally is interested in the history of higher education, institutional presidents, and career readiness. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Communications at the University of Alabama, a Master of Education in Art Education at the University of North Georgia, a Master of Education in Post and Secondary Education at Arizona State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education at Florida State University. A native of Georgia, Sally loves being in the Northeast Georgia Mountains and spending time with her dogs.

In a nation built on the backs of the enslaved and the bodies of the indigenous communities, it is both unsurprising and undeniable systemic oppression still exists today. While these systems are a constant factor in the lives of those who hold minoritized identities; the availability of technology and the twenty-four-hour news cycle has brought these injustices to a larger audience and sparked debate.

Our problem statement focuses on police brutality in America. Since its inception, the American police force, created by and predominantly consisting of people holding majoritized identities, has used and continues to use privileged force against communities of color. Catalyzed by racism, this privileged force is justified and perpetuated through the systemic criminalization of communities of color. While this criminalization took root over a century before our nation was founded, it is alive and well today: Eric Garner. Sandra Bland. Tamir Rice. Three of the many who have been unfairly lost due to police brutality in America. Through this case study, we will focus on the historical context and causes of this brutality. We will also introduce the Strategic Social Change Leadership model (Ospina et al., 2012), a framework from which we look to address police brutality directly through its underlying causes.

As previously mentioned, well in advance of the Declaration of Independence the enslavement and death of communities of color were used to ensure prosperity and power to white citizens. A number of systems were put in place to ensure this dynamic continued indefinitely including the predecessor of today’s American police force as determined by historians and experts in the field: slave patrols (Peak, 2014, p. 13). As a nation, we have the tendency to shy away from this connection, however, it is vitally important to recognize and understand the foundation and organization that holds such power in today’s society: the American police force, which was “created by the dominant class to preserve its control over the minority population of their day” (Peak, 2014, p. 15). It is incredibly difficult to see how the foundation does not echo into 2018.

Reminiscent of the development of the police force itself, the cause of police brutality is systemically rooted in racism through discriminatory use of power and privilege exercised over vulnerable communities of color (Alang, 2018). Through the years, formalized police organizations were called upon to use force to manage community uprisings that included labor strikes in the late 1800’s, civil rights protests in the mid to late 1900’s up to modern day social justice movements (Phillips, 2018).

In response to rising concerns over the police’s management of these movements, departments equipped themselves with military-style weaponry and armory (Phillips, 2018). Cited by Phillips (2018), the usage of war-infused narratives from police departments and US Presidents, to address community issues including going to “war with shotguns” and the “war on drugs” (p. 44) in the 1980’s gave reason to the extreme usage of semiautomatic weapons and other military-style tactical items still seen today.

Present day police forces, while slightly more diverse, still reflect the dominant positionality of white men exerting force over marginalized communities reminiscent of slave patrols (Data USA, 2016). This dominance fosters an environment for systemic racist and discriminatory practices to be upheld in police organizations across America. Marger (2012) noted racism as “….an ideology, or belief system, designed to justify and rationalize racial and ethnic inequality” (p. 25). Racism differs but builds upon Marger’s (2012) description of discrimination as “…behavior aimed at denying members of particular ethnic groups’ equal access to societal rewards” (p. 57). These racist and discriminatory thoughts create harmful stereotypes and unwarranted fear that contribute to a dangerous and unsubstantiated criminalization of people of color (Chaney, 2013). Alang (2018) best illustrates the contemporary effects of the criminalization of people of color as the following:

Executi ve Summa ry International Leadership Association Today, it is no longer an issue of being suspected of being a runaway slave; it is just generally being “suspected”—whether while sleeping in a common room in a university dorm, barbecuing, walking home while wearing a hoodie, driving, wanting to use the washroom in a coffee shop, and so on. Being non-White is suspect. (p. 1128) With strong historical roots and instilled challenges to overcome in police brutality, we look toward the Strategic Social Change Leadership (SSCL) model as a framework to approach resolving issues related to police brutality.

The SSCL model is undergirded by grounded humanism, which is “derived from a realistic appraisal of how society functions and recognition of the role power plays in leadership and social change” (Dugan, 2017, p. 299). With a constructivist lens, this model looks to name systems of power and privilege (Ospina et al., 2012). “Humanism reflects an appreciation of the humanity of all individuals and a faith in the potential to contribute to the work required to transform society” (Ospina et al., 2012, p.

269). As such, the SSCL model is grounded in social change organizations, “embody democratic values, pursue human dignity and citizenship, and work for the common good” (as cited in Ospina et al., 2012, p. 261) and is the best-fit approach to address the police brutality. This model begins with an examination of systemic inequities and weaves a systems approach throughout the stages. Historically, systems have been created that exclude people of color from having a voice. This exclusion manifests in the political, education, legislative, voting, and particularly racism and the police systems. According to this model, in order to address police brutality, the systems that have historically led to exclusion from these systems must be confronted in order to give the voice and power back to the communities (Ospina et al., 2012).

This model is focused on strategic action to build collective power, which is broken down into three stages: leadership practices, core activities, and creating collective capacity. While space is limited here, these steps will be expanded on during the poster presentation. A leadership practice we recommend include bridging the difference between our police and the communities they serve. A core activity included in this model we believe takes a priority is coalescing groups for organizing and change. From these steps, we move into the stage of creating collective capacity where we celebrate the progress we make in individual, organizational, and inter-organizational capacity. Finally, the model concludes with long-term outcomes that project how this vision and action has created change in structures, policies, and thinking. While we will not be able to provide the outcomes, since this is collectively built within and across communities, our vision and actions are rooted in human well-being and justice (Ospina et al., 2012).

With a bold vision for all community members to feel safe and secure in their communities, this contemporary social change depends upon micro and macro-level approaches. Small fixes including educating individuals at a young age for racial justice in order to address the deficit that humanity does not holistically value difference; while big fixes involve macro-level, systemic changes representing long-term societal change. As a contemporary social issue, police brutality in America must be analyzed from a historical perspective in order to understand the magnitude and gravity of its complexity. This executive summary captures the systemic causes of the issue while offering a framework to directly address police brutality through the scope of the SSLC model.
