AWARDS & RECOGNITION Sherrill W. Ragans Leadership & Service Award

This award is given in recognition of Sherrill W. Ragans, a highly respected member of the FSU student affairs staff, who retired in 2003. The recipients of this award have enhance the quality of the Higher Education Program and the welfare of their fellow students; they have demonstrated a spirit of responsibility in their graduate assistantship and collegiality in relations with others; excelled in their assistantship and other professional activities; and has exhibited a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a commitment to service.

Peer Leadership Award

This award is peer nominated. The recipients of this award have contributed to enhancing the quality of the FSU Higher Education Program; demonstrated leadership within program activities; demonstrated a spirit of responsibility and collegiality in their relationships with others and in their academic work; and has exhibited strong work ethic, professionalism, and academic integrity inside the classroom.

Supervisor-Mentor Award

The recipients of this award are FSU faculty or staff members nominated by students. The recipients have contributed to enhancing the quality of the FSU Higher Education Program; actively promoted the well-being and professional development of students; demonstrates a spirit of responsibility and collegiality in their relations with others; and they have served as a professional role model and mentor.

Dr. Barbara Mann Award

The Hardee Center is excited to continue awarding the Dr. Barbara Mann award, which recognizes higher education students who have shown excellence in their graduate assistantship and intend to pursue a career in student affairs, This award is given in recognition of Dr. Barbara Mann, a highly respected member of the Higher Education faculty, former Director of the Hardee Center, and beloved Tallahassee community member who passed away in 2017.

ABOUT ACADEMIC REGALIA A Brief History of Word Choice The terms "baccalaureate" and "commencement" are often used interchangeably to refer to graduation ceremonies, but they are actually two different things. A baccalaureate is a farewell sermon of a religious nature that is made to a graduating class at their commencement ceremonies.

Sometimes, a bachelor's degree is also called a baccalaureate degree. While a commencement ceremony or graduation is an academic exercise in which diplomas or degrees are conferred.

The History of Academic Regalia The academic graduation costume - the square cap, the flowing gown, and the elaborate ceremonial hood for those earning advanced college degrees - have been in continuous use in some form for nearly 1,000 years.

This academic garb originated at Oxford University in England, the world's oldest English-speaking educational institution, which traces its roots as far back as 1096. It was here that the traditions of academic regalia first developed from the garments worn by monks and clerics.

When monks were required to shave their heads and to sit for long hours in drafty, unheated stone buildings, capes are known as tippets, and wraparound cowls or hoods were necessary to keep them warm. Over time, the design of the gowns became standardized in academic use and the hood was relegated to serving as ceremonial decoration rather than performing any discernible function.

Caps and gowns were not worn at a graduation ceremony in the The United States until 1894, when they first were used at the University of Michigan.

The style of academic gown varies depending on the type of degree that has been earned.

Motarboard & Tassel: The Mortarboard, derived from the soft Oxford cap, is said to be squareshaped to reflect scholars' books. The tassel reflects the discipline color and is worn on the left both before and after the hooding ceremony and graduation, as the wearer has already "turned" their tassel by previously earning a bachelor's degree.

Gown: The master's gown has an oblong sleeve, with the rear part of the sleeve maintaining a long square front while the front of the sleeve has been cut away in an arc. Although the achelor's and master's gowns are very similar in design, the full-length sleeves of the master's gown are distinctive because of the long crescent shape.

Gown: The doctoral gown is a more elaborate costume with velvet panels draped around the neck, stitched own the front, and upon the bell shaped sleeves. The velvet on the gown may be a traditional black, or display the field of study depending on the degree granting institution.

Hood: A hood is placed on the graduate while onstage. The lining of the hood is the official colors of the university conferring the degree, while the trim color, similar to the tassel, indicates the discipline in which the degree was earned.

During a ceremony, graduates will be hooded with a light blue, which represents education The hood is worn around the neck with the thin velvet panel in front, while the larger panel is displayed upon their back.

The inside lining is folded outward, down the back, to display the school colors.

Tam: Doctoral degree holders are permitted to wear a six- ore eightcornered velvet tam or beret instead of the mortarboard. These graduates are may also wear a gold tassel on these caps, though like those wearing mortarboards, the colors represent the wear's field of study, if they so choose to display it.

Hood: The doctoral gown includes a long and more elaborate hood which is also worn around the neck and hangs down the wearer's back. The lining of the hood displays the official colors of the degree conferring university, while the velvet trim, once again, indicated the discipline in which the degree was earned, we use light blue to represent education.
