To All Harcum Alumni & Friends of the College

B

ack in October on the same weekend that close to a hundred alumni were on campus for our all-class reunion, we staged our first-ever Family Day, an event attended by some 250 people. The theme was “The Renaissance,” and there were strolling minstrels and jugglers, tarot card readers and flutists. The culinary fare included immense roasted turkey legs (shades of the movie, “Tom Jones”) and hot cider. It was splendid!

Why the Renaissance theme? In the last year or so, students, faculty, staff, and trustees alike have seen a virtual rebirth, or at least rejuvenation, of things that are making Harcum ever better.

When college opened in September, we welcomed 140 nursing students and 60 more in Radiologic Technology: this is some 200 students in two programs that did not exist a couple of years ago. We welcomed 60 men in our entering cohort of 360 new students—the largest number, by the way, in almost twenty years: the December 2003 decision by Harcum’s Board of Trustees to declare ourselves officially to be coeducational has had an obvious impact. New programs in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management Studies, and Legal Studies have been a boon. In fact, we can boast of eight new academic programs that did not exist two years ago. I am reminded of Dante Savanorola’s famous 12th century essay, Fresh Fields and Pastures New, in which he proclaims the end of the Middle Ages and the arrival of a very different era. We might just want to steal this title and apply it to the New Harcum!

Another aspect of our rebirth has been the reestablishment of intercollegiate athletics. Last year we began with women’s basketball, a Division II program that competes in District 19 of the National Junior College Athletic Association: the team chalked up an astonishing 27-1 record, and in the process the Lady Bears emerged as the second highest-scoring women’s team in the nation. By the time you read this, we anticipate that our women will make it to the district championships…and so will our men.

That’s right—our men! In the first intercollegiate contest in which Harcum put a men’s team in play, we accomplished the unimaginable, a 59-58 overtime win against the United States

Naval Academy in a game played in Annapolis. Go Harcum!

Beat Navy! How does that sound? And although our charter team in women’s volleyball had rough sledding, the word is, “Wait until next year!”

With a hefty growth in enrollments (nearly double where we were in the fall of 2002), with the establishment of branch instructional sites in Philadelphia, Chester, and even Altoona, with heartening growth in Continuing Studies offerings, and with fundraising successes, Harcum is operating in the black.

This, too, is part of our Renaissance.

Guided by our successful long-range plan, we foresee a bright future. Our trustees have endorsed a comprehensive “Campaign for Harcum’s Second Century,” and we are confident we will meet our ambitious goals. More new programs are in the pipeline.

The creation of a National Alumni Board, the appointment of class agents, and the good work of our Director of Alumni Affairs, Michele Sacher, have energized our efforts to reengage our graduates. Indeed, the class notes section in this edition of “Patches” is the lengthiest in a very long time, and it suggests that our efforts are succeeding.

Finally, let me say that our Renaissance is not so pronounced that the traditions of Harcum have been swept away. Not at all! Our National Alumni Board, for instance, is committed to what they are calling their “Heritage Project”—that is, the restoration of the College’s most historic buildings, namely Melville, the Little Theater, Bedford (Alumni House), and Richter (art and music).

Won’t you please join our effort to preserve our past?

As we celebrate our 90th anniversary, there are still other important continuities. We know that Harcum has long prided itself on small classes, personal attention, and instruction tailored to different modes of student learning. So it is today. We know that Harcum has from its inception provided career preparation opportunities for generations of students. So it continues to do today. With all the talk of “pastures new,” we nevertheless are very much aware that the rediscovery of older traditions is a vital part of the Harcum Renaissance. We have long been the Opportunity College. So we are today.

GO HARCUM BEAT NAVY! The very first men’s intercollegiate game in Harcum’s 90-year history, on Sunday afternoon November 13, 2005, was an exciting 59-58 overtime victory over the U.S. Naval Academy’s Junior Varsity team. J.V. team or not, this was an NCAA Division I program

About My Family: My mom Deana is the Director of Student Affairs of the Physician Scientist Training Program affiliated with Temple University. She helps high school students prepare for science-based college majors. My sister, Shannin (27), a graduate of Haverford College, is in her third year of medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Major: Business Administration Nickname: “Old School.” My teammates say that I play old school and that I am an old soul because I like to discuss ideas and think deeply about life and people.

First Basketball Team: Stratford Friends Elementary School in Haverford; 4th Grade Girl’s Team. I also attended Episcopal Academy.

High School Sports: Lower Merion High School Lacrosse, Track and Field Special Events, and Basketball Favorite Athlete: Wilt “the Stilt” Chamberlain because he is tall and lanky like me. I wear his number, “13.” My dad went to high school with him, and I loved hearing the story of him scoring over 100 points in one game when I was a little girl.

Favorite TV Show: Monk Hobbies: Piano lessons at Harcum Medley Music School, drawing, and writing imaginative stories; thinking about life.

Favorite Movie: Love & Basketball

Little Known Fact: I wanted to be both a mechanic and a veterinarian at the same time. When I was eight years old, I borrowed tools from the neighborhood garage to take my bike apart and put it back together. I still love hands-on projects, which is why I really like basketball.

Basketball Philosophy: Have fun and play for the love of the game! Playing on a team is a beautiful thing! It has all the benefits and challenges of being a part of a family: rely on each other, be patient with each other, work out problems together, and in the end, support each other.

What I Like About Harcum: I really love taking classes with Ms. Elaine Bell because she is authentic, real, and she has fun with the students. I’ve been challenged to grow and mature by having increased self-awareness.

It’s been a good experience for me to be at Harcum because I’ve learned to make stronger decisions, to be more responsible and to keep my commitments.

Secret Ambition: I took public speaking with Ms. Bell and loved it so much that I would like to be a film or stage actress. If anyone would like to give me a chance, please call me at Harcum!

Future Plans: From Harcum I want to go to a performing arts school to work on a Bachelors in Fine Arts in stage and film acting preferably in San Francisco or New York. I would also like to be able to study abroad.

SPORTS PROFILE Ebony Fowlkes #21, Point Guard Harcum Women’s Basketball

Major: Animal Center Management Nickname: “E.B Marvelous” and “Eggy.”

My step dad gave me the name ‘E.B Marvelous’ because I really wanted to be a rapper and even performed a rap for my high school graduation on stage. I still rap now about my life, gender issues, and major world events like 9/11. “Eggy” is from my little brother, who could not say ‘Ebony.’ My teammates heard him call me Eggy and that was all it took.

Hobbies: I work at PetSmart because I love animals and making sure they are protected and safe. I have three ferrets who live with my uncle, not with me in the residence halls!

First Basketball Team: Playing on three boys’ teams because the girls’ teams were full.

I was recruited by my gym teacher who was also the middle school boys’ basketball team coach! I thought, well OK, I might be smaller but maybe I can be faster than them. My small size worked to my advantage.

High School Sports: University City Women’s varsity basketball team; softball; track, and cross country.

Favorite Athlete: Tim Thomas, whom I would watch play for Villanova and the 76ers in ’97-99. He had his 21st birthday celebration after a big game on TV and he was the 21st draft pick. I choose 21 to be my basketball number after seeing him play, as he was a pretty good shooter who scored a lot.

Favorite TV Show: Martin Little Known Fact: When I was only eight years old, my older brother wouldn’t take me to play ball at the boys’ courts because I was a girl and sometimes it just wasn’t safe. So I made my own basketball net and court using a plastic crate from the corner store and double dutch

jump rope! I went around to all the kids on the block and asked them to come play ball.

About My Family: I am the middle child and only girl in my family so I guess I am kind of a tomboy. My older brother Tyree, 21 and younger brothers, Rashad, 12, and Montay, 6, all play basketball. I played on an all-boys team in 6th grade with Tyree and won his respect because I was such a good player. I’ve always looked up to Tyree and I really wanted to play basketball to be just like him. My mom Robin and my step dad Gary live in Philadelphia where I grew up living with all them.

Basketball Philosophy: Figure out what new things you can learn to contribute to the team. Every person is different and motivated by different things. Always have a smile on your face, keep your frustrations to yourself, and don’t hold grudges, get over them fast!

What I Like About Harcum: Ms. Tracie Kennedy, my English teacher makes me work very hard. She would make me write and write and re-write my papers and first I thought, “She’s crazy!” But then she praised my writing in class and I knew I had earned that praise; it felt great! She taught me to take time to really think, practice, and write and not to just rush through your homework. I’ve learned to handle responsibilities of schoolwork, my pets, a steady job, and being a college athlete. I think having to juggle all of these responsibilities will prepare me to be a great worker in my career after I finish college.

Secret Ambition: I’d like to live somewhere that I can meet people, feel safe, and please others. I once traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC, for a high school basketball tournament and I liked it there, especially the beaches. I am not really focused on material things or money but a cream or black Lexus would be nice!

Future Plans: I would like to finish my AA degree at Harcum College in December 2006 in Animal Center Management. I am considering offers to play ball at four-year local colleges. After college, I would like to have a career as an Animal Control Police Officer.

Harcum on the move President’s 90th anniversary reception On October 14, 2005, Harcum College

90th anniversary

kicked off Alumni Reunion Weekend and celebrated its 90th Anniversary with an exquisite cocktail reception hosted by President Charles H. Trout and his wife, Katherine, at their home on the Harcum College campus. More than 120 alumni, benefactors, faculty, staff, and students attended The evening was filled with fun and laughter as those who hold Harcum close to their hearts gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion.

In addition to notable Harcum College alumni and friends, the College was honored to have State Senator Connie Williams, State Representative Daylin Leach, and Lower Merion Commissioner Charles Bloom in attendance. Each public official presented Harcum with a resolution or proclamation congratulating

Harcum on the move Marlo Classic Raises $46,000 for Health Science Scholarships

The Kevin D. Marlo Memorial Golf Classic was held at the Llanerch Country Club in Havertown on August 18, 2005. It was an enormous success, thanks to over 75 golfers, generous sponsors, sunny weather, and dedicated volunteers.

The tournament raised over $46,000, supporting deserving students in health science programs at Harcum College.

Harcum on the move As a not-for-profit corporation, Harcum College is governed by a Board of Trustees that is legally responsible for the operation of the College. The men and women who comprise the Board of Trustees are selected for their expertise in business, education, finance, and other areas that are relevant to the mission of an educational institution.

Michael J. Buongiorno Mike Buongiorno is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Main Line Health. Main Line Health is an integrated health care delivery system in suburban Philadelphia that provides comprehensive health care services primarily through its four Hospitals: Lankenau Hospital, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli Hospital and Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital. Complementing these institutions is a full range of outpatient services that are provided in ambulatory centers, physician offices, and in the home.

Mike joined Main Line Health in 1994 as the Regional Chief Financial Officer for Main Line’s Western Operations, primarily Paoli Memorial Hospital and Bryn Mawr Rehab. In 1996, he became the Assistant Vice President for Financial Support at Main Line Health, with responsibility for system-wide budget, planning, reimbursement, external reporting, and internal audit. Mike became the Chief Financial Officer of Main Line Health in 1997, and responsibilities include all aspects of financial management, strategic planning, and treasury services. In 2004, he was also named Executive Vice President.

Prior to joining Main Line Health, Mike was the Chief Financial Officer of Mercy Community Hospital, and he also spent 13 years with Coopers & Lybrand, where he specialized in health care, manufacturing, and energy-related areas.

Mike was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He received a BS from St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, PA, and is a Certified Public Accountant. His hobbies include boating, fishing, and antique car restoration.

Barbara graduated from Harcum as an Optometric Technician and also worked in transportation services for the Chester County Agency on Aging before raising three children and serving as a dedicated community volunteer. She is a former trustee of the William Penn Foundation and serves on the board of Thorncroft, a therapeutic riding academy. She has an abiding interest in promoting handicapped accessibility in the community. Her hobbies include riding horses, martial arts, hiking, and traveling abroad.

Barbara was appointed to the Harcum College Board of Trustees in 2005. She is engaged to Ray Blydenburgh. Barbara also enjoy’s spending time with her children Kathy Lee (20), John Charles (19), and Dorothy Elizabeth (17). Kathy is on the woman’s ice hockey team at University of Delaware, John is attending Loyola College in Baltimore, and Dorothy is in her senior year boarding at Westtown Friends School.

Vincent Gaudini, . a retired Philadelphia police officer, tells us about his reluctant yet successful entry . into the world of academia: “ I was a single parent of two boys, Vincent Jr. and Michael. While I was struggling to raise my sons, many family members and friends suggested that I go back to college to reduce some of the stresses in my life. I found Harcum College and hesitantly applied for admission. It was strange to be in class at age 48 while many of my classmates were 19 or 20, but everyone was extremely welcoming.

Later, my son, Vincent Jr., joined me at Harcum College. We were the first father and son in Harcum’s history! Harcum put an article and photo of us in their catalogue.

Then a newspaper wrote a story about us. After I graduated from Harcum, Phi Theta Kappa, with an Associate’s degree, I learned about Alvernia College’s Bachelor’s degree programs on Harcum’s campus and attended an open house. I met with .

Gerson Rosenbloom is president of Medley Music Corporation in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Established in 1954, the store carries band, orchestra, fretted, and percussion instruments, sound reinforcement and recording equipment, keyboards and computers. The company is also well-known for its role in setting up the original importing and distribution of internationally-recognized Ibanez guitars and Tama drums.

Mr. Rosenbloom has his degree in Business Administration from Temple University. He has served as a consultant for several major manufacturers in the music industry and has been a member of the NAMM Board (the International Music Products Association) and its Executive Committee. He has served on the Executive Committee of the American Music Conference, the Technology Institute for Music Education (TI:ME) and the Pennsylvania Coalition for Music Education.

Mr. Rosenbloom studied music at Philadelphia’s Neupauer Conservatory. As a keyboardist, his musical career has included live performance as well as recording studio experience as a synthesizer programmer and performer. His hobbies include playing piano, synthesizer programming, computers, video production, photography, running, racquetball, boating, fishing, and water-skiing.

At Alvernia, like Harcum, everyone knows me as a person. It’s like a family to me; the instructors were very accommodating when I had surgery this past winter. Thanks to the preparation I received in my Behavioral Sciences program, I am succeeding in my internship at a child welfare agency. I am grateful to Harcum College and glad to be a student at Alvernia College!”

new faces at harcum Dianna C. Dale, Dean of Student Services Dianna C. Dale has joined Harcum as Dean of Student Affairs. She comes to Harcum from Drexel University, where she was Senior Associate Vice President for Student Life/Dean of Students. At Drexel she created learning communities for first-year residential and commuter students, she instituted new student orientation programs and family weekend/family visit events, and she created a “Family Guide to Drexel University,” a publication designed to educate family members on Drexel’s policies, procedures, and services. A resident of Voorhees, NJ, Ms. Dale holds an M.S. in Higher Education Student Personnel Services/Counseling from Seton Hall University, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Leadership and Learning Technologies at Drexel.

Laura M. Hanes, Director of Annual Giving & Special Events Laura M. Hanes is Harcum’s Director of Annual Giving and Special Events, a new position at the College.

Ms. Hanes will be responsible for developing, generating, and sustaining major gift campaigns at Harcum, as well as all management responsibilities for College fundraising events, such as the annual Kevin D. Marlo Golf Classic.

Ms. Hanes joins Harcum College from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA where in the Development Office she helped the Center reach the $185 million dollar Capital Campaign goal. Prior to working at the Center, Ms. Hanes served as a District Representative in the office of former U.S. Congressman Joseph M. Hoeffel. A Masters candidate at the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate of the University of Maryland in College Park, Ms. Hanes resides in Jenkintown, PA were she is active in numerous community organizations.

Drew P. Kelly, Athletic Director Drew P. Kelly has been named Athletic Director for Harcum College, taking on that responsibility in addition to his current duties as head men’s basketball coach. Mr. Kelly will spearhead Harcum’s growing athletic endeavors, which presently encompass men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s track and field. Before joining Harcum Mr. Kelly was the head men’s basketball coach at Bucks County Community College. Prior to that he was the assistant men’s basketball coach at the College of New Jersey in Trenton and was an assistant coach at Haverford College. Mr. Kelly received his undergraduate degree in Geography from Villanova University and his Master’s Degree in Counseling from The College of New Jersey. He is a resident of Newark, DE.

Raymond C. Rodgers, Business Programs Director Raymond C. Rodgers has been named director of Business Programs at the College. Mr. Rodgers comes to Harcum from Delaware County Community College, where he also taught business courses.

At Harcum, he will concentrate on building the College’s existing business program offerings, including the addition of a Sports Management Program. Ray earned both a BBA in Accounting and a MBA from LaSalle University. He has 25 years post-secondary teaching experience and also 5 years academic administration experience. In addition he has worked in the Oil, Insurance, and Government sectors.

Marian C. Slater, Ph.D., RN, Nursing Program Director Marian C. Slater, Ph.D., RN, has been named Director of the Nursing Program at Harcum.

Dr. Slater received her Ph.D. in Health Science Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Prior to her arrival at Harcum she taught at Neumann College and Widener University.

She has published a variety of articles in nursing.

She resides in Bryn Mawr, PA.

Holocaust Remembrance Artist Freida Leseber spoke in the Library Rotunda about experiences growing up in Hitler’s Germany. In her talk on October 31, 2005 she spoke about being a hospital nurse before escaping the Nazi Regime and discussed the many challenges she has faced and overcome in her life.

Ty Taylor, Women’s Basketball Coach Ty Taylor is the new women’s basketball coach.

Mr. Taylor is currently the multi-cultural recruiter for Haverford College’s Athletic Department and was the assistant coach for that college’s Division III men’s basketball team.

In addition to his recruiting responsibilities at Haverford, Mr. Taylor has coached in the Amateur Athletic Union, posting a 94-54 record for Fencor AAU from 1998 to 2001.

A graduate of College Misericordia (Class of 1991) with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing, Mr. Taylor resides in Yeadon, PA.

Professor Ranft Loans Zipin Paintings to Harcum Martin Ranft, Associate Professor of English

Richard Ulrych, Director of Foundation Relations & Prospect Research Richard Ulrych is Harcum’s Director of Foundation Relations and Prospect Research and plays a key role in securing funding for Harcum from both private and government institutions. Mr. Ulrych not only has extensive fundraising experience, but also a strong background as a teacher. After receiving a master’s degree in applied linguistics from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, Richard Ulrych spent 18 years in the language teaching field, 14 years overseas, working as an English language instructor, teacher trainer, and program supervisor at the university level.

Prior to coming to Harcum, Mr. Ulrych worked at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) in Philadelphia, where he was responsible for raising corporate and foundation funds in support of programs that seek to preserve and make known the history and heritage of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and industries.

Harcum on the move Dental Hygiene Students Showcase their Professional Research in Annual Table Clinics Night

“A Harcum Tradition”

On Tuesday night October 25, 2005, over 40 graduating seniors showcased their professionalism at the Annual Table Clinics in Klein Hall. Dressed professionally, rather than their normal blue scrubs, they made impressive, varied, and interactive multimedia presentations from their professional research. The close-to-200 people in attendance included friends and families of the students, President Charles H. Trout, Provost Edward D’Alessio, area dentists, Harcum faculty, and many alumni of Harcum’s dental programs.

The attendees were there to partake of a Harcum tradition: encouraging the bright, capable, but nervous seniors, learning from their research, and networking with classmates and colleagues. The presentations included, “Mercury in Dental Amalgams,” “Are you a Victim of Your Beverage,” “Changing Lives One Smile at a time: Cleft Lip and Palate,” “Prevention of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders in Technicians,” “Your Mouth, Your Life, and How Co-Enzyme Q10 can Help;” and “How Periodontal Disease Affects Your Heart.”

The Table Clinics are a rite de passage as, by the end of the evening, the seniors began to see themselves in a new light— budding professionals who have something of value to offer the dental community.

Oksana McGurk and Natalia Kerusenko were a true “Sister Act” at the 2005 Dental Hygiene Table Clinics. Born in the Ukraine, these wonderfully articulate siblings gave a compelling presentation of the results of their original research, recently corroborated by a Michigan study, on the dramatic long term damage to tooth enamel caused by sugar, acidic beverages, coffee, and other liquids.

Harcum’s Radiological Technology Program Rad Tech graduating class in 2005, and encouraged its radiological professionals to serve as Harcum adjunct instructors. MLHS representatives also serve on the Advisory Board for Harcum’s radiologic technology program, and Michael Buongiorno, MLHS Chief Financial officer and Executive Vice President, has recently joined Harcum College’s Board of Trustees.

Harcum College is in the midst of a renaissance. Fueling this rebirth is the creation of programs that are attracting students, forging partnerships, and shaping a new image of the College. One such program is Harcum’s radiologic technology or Rad Tech program, which is helping to establish Harcum as a premier training ground for mid-level healthcare professionals in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Originally a certificate program at Main Line Health System (MLHS), the Rad Tech program was officially taken over by Harcum in the spring of 2004. When that happened, the Rad Tech students already enrolled were given the option of concluding their studies with a certificate or continuing on to receive an associate degree from Harcum; 34 of them (out of a total of 42) chose to pursue the Harcum degree, even though this involved additional coursework. Today, there are 56 Rad Tech students.

Besides bringing students to the College, Harcum’s radiologic technology program has built ties with Main Line Health System, which has collaborated closely with Harcum in developing the new program, donating educational materials, didactic devices, and an X-ray head unit. It has advised the College in regard to the creation of on-campus radiological facilities, hosted a pinning ceremony and reception for the first Harcum

Harcum’s radiologic technology program has also attracted important support from The Connelly Foundation, a leader of the Philadelphia philanthropic community.

Harcum’s President, Dr. Charles H. Trout, and Provost, Dr. Edward R. D’Alessio, pointed out that the quality of healthcare in the Philadelphia region is being undermined by a shortage of radiological technologists.

This shortage is delaying the production of X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, etc., thereby hindering diagnosis and treatment. By putting more radiologic technologists into the local workforce, Harcum is helping to improve the quality of healthcare in our region.

The College anticipates a graduating class of 27 in 2006 and plans to add certificate programs in mammography, MRI and CT, further adding to enrollment. Three full-time radiologic technology instructors are currently employed by the College: Julie Taddeo, program director, formerly with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; Pamela Joseph, from Einstein Medical Center; and Beth Gibbs, an instructor in the MLHS certificate program. Each of these professionals brings years of experience in radiologic technology and education.

In just two years, with the help of friends in the community, Harcum has built a solid radiologic technology program, and this program will soon have facilities that will set a national standard for Rad Tech training in institutions of higher education.

Alumni on the move Wear it or share it! re-cap of the baseball cap story A that’s inspiring women…

Last June President Charles H. Trout forwarded a series of thoughtful newspaper articles from the Norristown newspaper, The Times Herald that were written by Harcum alum Cindy Canevari, ’90, describing her struggle to overcome breast cancer. His note termed the articles “remarkable” and he told me how much he’d enjoyed phone conversations with Cindy stating that “She’s delightful to talk to on the phone.” He suggested I call her. That same week, my aunt had been diagnosed with breast cancer, a term that strikes fear into any woman. I remembered how uncomfortable I had been in approaching my aunt, and, as I dialed Cindy’s number, I wondered if I would find the right words to say. But when Cindy answered, she put me at ease with her sweet, kind, and enthusiastic voice. Cindy’s story soon inspired me to develop the theme “Spirited Women: Four Stories of Courage and Determination” for Harcum’s Alumni Reunion dinner in October 2005. Over 90 people attended the dinner. After telling her story, Cindy surprised each guest with a ribbon cap and a summary of the Ribbon Cap Story that comprised a part of her talk.

The Ribbon Cap Story Story by Cynthia Cisick Canevari, ’90, Physical Therapist Assistant “As a woman faces the diagnosis of cancer, there are unthinkable hurdles to overcome and fearful challenges to conquer. The 2005 Alumni Reunion Weekend at Harcum College saluted ‘Spirited Women’—those who encounter life’s challenges with grace, strength, and courage.

In honor of these valiant women and their determination, Harcum College and I present you with the ribbon cap story and a ribbon cap.”

As a recent breast cancer survivor, I underwent a mastectomy and the rigors of chemotherapy and radiation. The trauma surrounding my medical problems along with the side effects of chemo left me feeling powerless, fearful and mournful of my loss of femininity. I was bald. My friend Joan met a woman who was wearing a beautiful feminine baseball cap: it was a yummy aqua color trimmed with a multi-color ribbon on the brim. Wanting to purchase a cap for me, Joan explained my medical journey and the challenges I was facing to this woman. This woman, my Good Samaritan, took that aqua cap off her own head, handed it to Joan and asked her to send it to me.

The ribbon cap made me feel pretty and attractive. Now I had a reason to don my makeup again. As I looked in the mirror when I was wearing the ribbon cap, I could see the twinkle in my eyes had returned. Both Joan and I sent thank you notes to the Good Samaritan, a stranger. Less than two weeks later, I received a large package in the mail from the Good Samaritan’s daughter; she was the creator of the original aqua hat. In the package were eight more ribbon caps with a special request that I pass them along to other women. I found homes for all eight ribbon caps with women I knew who were diagnosed with some form of cancer and on a journey seeking health, wholeness, and encouragement, just like me.

For Harcum College’s alumni reunion weekend dinner that celebrated four spirited women, my family, friends and I created over 90 ribbon caps to be given to all the guests at the dinner.

We asked each recipient to give the hat and a copy of this “Ribbon Cap Story” to a woman in their life who is seeking health and recovery to become cancer free. Michele and I shared a vision to offer this hat and thoughtful kindness to other women in your lives. We were excited to share this story with the Harcum Community, having the distinct history of being a women’s college. What better place to raise awareness and support as there is a history of women supporting and cheering on fellow women. In the original note, we wished them a complete and speedy recovery. We asked them to enjoy the ribbon cap by either wearing it themselves or sharing it with a woman they know who is fighting cancer. We wanted them to know . that they are now part of the RIBBON CAP .

CLUB with hopes that they would feel blessed and encouraged.

Currently my family, friends, and I are working together to create more ribbon caps. We have another vision that we would like to share with the Harcum College Alumni and Friends Community. On June 16th and 17th I will be leading two teams so as to support others who are currently traveling the same frightening path as I. These two teams, “The Neighbors” and “The Out of Towners,” will participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Milford, Delaware, which is outside of Rehoboth Beach. We plan to raise awareness, support, encouragement, and money through the new Ribbon Cap Club. A

Rescue Four-Legged Katrina Victims

manda Rineer had a busy weekend last September. After finishing a week of Veterinary Technology classes at Harcum College and working a shift at Neffsville Veterinary Hospital in Lancaster, she packed for a long, grueling mission of mercy. Amanda is one of three volunteers who made a 32hour round trip drive to Jackson, Mississippi, bringing much needed help to animal victims of Hurricane Katrina.

After leaving Pennsylvania at 4 a.m. Thursday, they arrived in Jackson at 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Amanda and the other volunteers brought CARA Rescue and Adoption (which was housing 300 dogs and 40 cats) much needed supplies and skills. After touring the large center, they were able to take 14 dogs and 10 cats (several more than planned) back with them to Pennsylvania to the Neffsville Veterinary Hospital.

Harcum Vet Tech graduate Lindsay HarnishFeerar ‘03, joined Amanda and another volunteer from the Veterinary Hospital for the trip to CARA Rescue and Adoption in Jackson to bring supplies and relief to the many dogs, cats, and pets that were stranded or separated from their owners during the storm.

“All of the animals we brought home were strays who were already staying at the shelter when the storm hit,” Amanda says. “The shelter is very crowded, and we are helping make room for those pets that they are trying to keep until they can locate their rightful owners, which may take some time.”

The idea for the mission came from a coworker of Amanda’s at the Veterinary Hospital.

All of Amanda’s teachers at Harcum excused her from classes until she returned from Mississippi, and some have asked her to speak to their classes about her experiences. “It was so nice that my teachers were so supportive and very enthusiastic,” she said.

After leaving Mississippi at 5 p.m. on Friday, they arrived back in Pennsylvania on Saturday at 3 p.m., in time for clinic doctors and volunteers from Neffsville to check all the animals and get them situated in their new home. Since their journey to Mississippi, nearly all the dogs and cats have been adopted.

Amanda and her family opened their home to a dog named “Momma” who was hit by a car in Mississippi. “Its just amazing what can happen when people come together to help out,” says Amanda. “I am very glad that I had this experience.”

The mission’s 15 passenger van, donated by Apple Auto Sales in Lancaster, was loaded with dog and cat food, kitty liter, trash bags, paper towels, toys, and treats. As a result of fundraising efforts, helped along by local television stations and newspapers, Amanda and the others raised an additional $3,500 to help finance the trip. “Neighbors, friends, relatives, and folks we never met—they all helped us,” Amanda said. “Many of our clients at the Veterinary Hospital donated the supplies”

How a Harcum Education was

My Opportunity of a Lifetime

By Laurie Forbes ’71, Psychotherapist & Entrepreneur identify and understand the many types of learning disabilities and treatment options because they can really do terrible things to a child’s self-esteem, and growing up doesn’t always erase those memories.

ave you ever considered how your current career path, successes, spouse, children, house, and friends in your life are in part results of attending Harcum? I attribute much of my life’s successes to Harcum.

Without Harcum I would not have been able to go to college and ultimately earn my Masters degree in Social Work. I doubt that I would have my private psychotherapy practice.

When I was in high school my grades were just, O.K. and my SAT scores were quite low. I knew that I had the motivation, perseverance, and willingness needed to succeed in college, and more importantly I believed in myself. I was a slow reader, memorizing information was a challenge, and trying to focus and listen in class was difficult. Despite my willingness to work hard, it was very frustrating.

Despite of the difficulties I was having in school, my mother believed in me and in my intellectual capabilities I would often beg her to let me quit high school, college, and even graduate school, but her response was always the same: “That’s not an option Laurie.” I can’t imagine how different my life would be now if my mother had given up on me and allowed me to quit school.

When I was growing up in the 1960s, the concept of learning disabilities hadn’t yet been defined. It’s really only been since 1995 that educational professionals have begun to

Today we know that 10-20% of all children have learning disabilities and about 20% of those children have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Only since the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, have schools, colleges, and universities begun to provide services for these students.

A learning disability is a neurologically based disorder, rather than an intellectual problem or sign of low intelligence. This is validated by famous people who are considered to have genius minds and learning disabilities: Albert Einstein, Mozart, Leonard da Vinci, Thomas Edison, George Bernard Shaw, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Cher, Walt Disney, Dustin Hoffman, and Tom Cruise.

Harcum in the 1960s may have been ahead of its time. It was, and today remains, a college that looks at students’ potential, motivation, and determination not just their grades and SAT scores. When I was at Harcum, they provided me with the ideal learning environment for students with learning disabilities: individualized attention, small classes, and a safe place to learn and express ideas, just as they do today. My professors were supportive, encouraging, and interested in my academic successes. They were willing to give of themselves and to share their time.

Harcum also provided a solid foundation for me as a person by preparing me for life beyond college. My professors encouraged me to explore and enhance my potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Even though school was very difficult for me this was not the case in the work world.

After I obtained my Master’s Degree in Social Work and began working, I really flourished.

I succeeded because in the work world we are not memorizing, learning vast amounts of new information, and being tested on a daily basis. For the first time in my life, I really began to believe my mother’s words, “Laurie, you are bright and capable.” My mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 1987, at the young age of 59. I know that her heart is filled with pride as she sees my successes and recalls her troubled little girl. Now I am a confident woman who is humbly proud of all of my academic and professional successes.

The philosophy, opportunity meets perseverance, is one that resonates with me personally. Over the years I have provided psychotherapy to literally thousands of clients in various clinical settings, which include a rape treatment center, nursing homes, and facilities for the mentally ill. While working full time in those settings I also built my own part time private practice. For the past 15 years I have been teaching at a community college and my private practice is now a full-time one.

As president of a professional organization for clinical social workers, I have, with help from my colleagues, revitalized the organization and doubled its membership.

Now, whenever I am asked to do something professionally, even if I have no idea how to do it, my first response is, “Yes, I can do that.” I’ve learned over the years that if you ask enough questions, are willing to work very hard, and to put as much time in as you have to finish the task, you can accomplish anything! Thank you, Harcum, for preparing me to learn this life-giving lesson.

ClassNotes 1936 Jane Cone Roberts Jane likes the new Harcum and the curriculum. She says, “It’s wonderful that there is modern age career education.”

1938 Josephine “Jiggie” Cobbs Jones Holt Jiggie continues her busy schedule of volunteer work in Lynchburg, VA, noting that all the activity, “Is probably why I’m still here at 86.” She “downsized” to a condominium late last year and looks forward to a visit this spring from the Harcum alumni staff.

1940 Constance Flynn Lagerman “I’m keeping very busy working part-time at the Little House Shop in Strafford, PA. I just finished three years on the Board of Assistants of the PA Mayflower Society. My daughter, Zan Gardner, who spent one year at Harcum, is a Jazz Vocalist. Hope to see Bettie Herbert Hobin soon.”

Four Life & Career Building Stories.” Faye, one of only four women in the U.S. to win the Herreshof Award, a top yachting award in the U.S., was also inducted as a member of the O.S.N.A Sailing Hall of Fame. Faye also talked about how her pioneering spirit has inspired other women worldwide to pursue a passion for sailboat racing in a sport traditionally dominated by men.

1947 Louise Becke Louise has six grandchildren and three great-grand children. She spends her summers in Ocean City, MD, and is also enjoying her new pug dog.

1950 Ann Sproule Hunnicutt Ann is now retired and says, “Harcum started me on my career as a dental hygienist (RDH), speech therapist, law student, and author.” Ann is single and splits her time between Ft. Meyers, FL and Maine.

Katherine Linker Carr “I attended the New England get together May 15, 2005, and enjoyed meeting other Harcum graduates. I called Carlotta Scinta Ames ‘43 but she could not attend. We are going to get together in Boston soon.”

1944 Ann Boyden Taft Lockwood “Life is good in Houston Texas. We escaped the wrath of Hurricane Rita and played host to many evacuees from the Katrina storm. The Gulf Coast has had a tough hurricane season. I miss Jean Moore Croft who died on October 26, 2004. Her children and I stay in touch by phone. We celebrated Jean’s last birthday with lunch at my house. My first grandchild, Elliot James Lockwood, age 15, achieved the Eagle Scout Rank with a Court of Honor on September 10, 2005. My son Andrew and his family escaped a disastrous house fire on October 5, 2005. The house is being rebuilt and renovated. The end of October I visited my sister in Hamden, CT and enjoyed lunch with Mildred Case Kay ’44 and her husband Bob from West Hartford, CT. She is still working and is very active with her children and grandchildren.”

“In June 2004 my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the Philadelphia Country Club. No new grandchildren (which is good.) Oldest granddaughter at Duke and her sister is at UNC.”

1955 Bea Carpenter Blackman President and Mrs. Charles H. Trout recently dined with Bea and Charlie Blackman and Gail (also class of 1955) and Don Greene, at the Blackman’s home in Ardmore, PA. The Greenes joined the party from their home in Wilmington, DE. Bea reports, “Gail and I, along with our husbands, enjoy getting together for dinner several times a year.”

Bea also recently performed in February in concert at Rosemont College; her conductor and violin soloist are also both members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. A member of the Harcum College Board of Trustees and National Alumni Board, Bea is also acting as the Trustees representative to the College’s Middle States Steering Committee.

Abigail Wright Greene “I was sorry to miss the 2005 Harcum reunion in October. It was the same weekend as our Church Retreat, for which I was responsible…so, you can’t be in two places at the same time (except in your heart). Last year Don and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary; our son and his wife’s 25th wedding anniversary; our oldest grandson’s graduation from Carleton College; our youngest grandson’s graduation from high school; and our youngest daughter’s wedding—so we took everyone to Italy for two weeks! We rented a farm house in Umbria, Italy, and had a most marvelous time! We love to travel and will soon be heading off for some time in Ireland. The Harcum alums that I see, or keep in touch with, are; Betty Bates (from a 40s class), Jane Edwards Kelso (my “little sister” from the class of ’56), and my daughter Meg Greene (Miller), Class of ‘78. Meg is an RN who is employed by Independence Blue Cross, in Philadelphia.

For 18 years Donald and I have been mooring our sailboat on Langford Creek outside of Chestertown, MD. In January we had a delightful evening with President and Mrs. Charles H. Trout at the Blackman’s.

We realized that we have many things in common with the Trouts because following their years at Washington College, the Trouts held onto their primary residence in Chestertown. What a small world indeed.

Needless to say there was rapid discovery of many friends in common. The person I would love to know about is Rita Nahon, with whom I shared many fun hours in our merchandising/advertising classes. If anyone has heard from Rita, please let the alumni office know, as I would love to catch up with her.”

1956 Jocelyn Magrath Lamb “I am a typical 1950s era wife and mother. My husband, Bill, and I have six children and eight grandchildren. We live in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania. My husband still goes to the office every day.

I still find time to be an active Garden Club member and sit on the board of the Pennsylvania State Questers. Yes, I do wear pearls and cashmere twin sets. My hair is in a “Page Boy” with a headband and I’m beside myself that “Lily” is

opening a shop at the King of Prussia Mall. I’d love to hear from any and all of my friends and allies from Melville Hall.

Fifty years ago this spring we will have parted to begin the rest of our lives.

Phyllis Rosenfield Rudolph “I have been living in Gladwyne for the past 35 years and recently moved into a co-op in Bala Cynwyd. My husband is also retired and we spend our summers in Ventnor, New Jersey, and a portion of each winter in Florida. My daughter and son reside in the area so I spend quality time with my two grandchildren and play some bridge.”

1957 Gay Verbit Block Gay is grateful for her Medical Technology training and declares, “Thirty-seven years in labs enabled me to raise three children and I really love my work as well!”

Carol Brooks Larley Carol’s Medical Technology degree led her to certification in Cyotechnology and later to training as a Veterinary Technologist.

She says, “I’d have loved it if Harcum offered this Veterinary Technology training when I was there. Working in an animal hospital was most rewarding and educational. I loved it!”

1958 Nina Stukelman Rahn “I enjoyed brunch in Boca Raton with other South Floridian alums and meeting with Dr. Charles H. Trout. We learned about Harcum College 2005 and what we can do to make a difference for college bound students today. I will do what I can to support this school and this cause.” Nina also says hi Jeanie Levy and Judy Feigel!

1959 Marilyn Halma Bleznak “It’s been many years since my “Harcum Days.” I started off in the Med. Tech. field, then got married and raised a family. Our three children are grown and have given us five wonderful grandchildren, ages two to thirteen. My husband, Stu, and I have been in the Real Estate business for the past 27 years. So our world has been devoted to family and Real Estate. I have been in contact with Carol Skolnick Cohn, Debbie Rudolph Dittos, and Taube Richman Weinberg and they are all doing well. 1961 Nancy Hornstine Bazrod “I am retired after many years of teaching nursery school enrichment programs, substituting in K-2, and one on one with special children. My husband, Dave, and I have four grandchildren who give us great pleasure. We fill our lives with many interests including Dave’s kayaking and my quilting. Dave and I love to travel—our latest trip a cruise on the Queen Mary 2.

We live in Clayton, N.J.”

1962 Nancy Llewellyn “I am still working at the law firm of Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler in the Trusts and Estates Department and plan to retire in March 2007. Then, hopefully I will feel up to getting back on the stage to do some more acting, once I have more time.

I have enjoyed travel quite a bit over the years, along with acting, and I often travel to the major horse races. This year I will be attending the Kentucky Derby and have visited Kentucky in the past to visit horse farms, breeding farms, etc. Sadly, over the years I have lost track of some dear friends of mine from Harcum and have had no luck in locating them. And, so, my love goes out particularly to Janice Mueller (Cole?) and Bibi Khan. I hope they are well. I do have such fond memories of our life together at Harcum. It was a wonderful time. As the years go by and our parents pass away and we suffer the loss of other loved ones, the memories of old friends become very precious.”

1963 Carolyn Anderson Bloom “My husband and I just became grandparents for the first time. Caroline Elizabeth O’Gorman was born on April 10th, 14lbs. 6oz., 20”, in Hilton Head Island, SC! My daughter and Son-in-Law, Virginia and Tim O’Gorman, own the Bluffton Ale House in Bluffton, SC a great restaurant—great food! Our son, Colonel Hugh Bloom, III, just moved from Wayne, PA back to Lehigh Valley. He is the News

Producer at WFMZ TV Channel 69 News in Allentown. He just bought a townhouse on a golf course, and a yellow lab—Kasey (female), our first granddog. Tigger and I sold our house of 36 years last September.

We moved to Suburbia. It has a master bedroom on the first floor. We built it from scratch on a half acre in Bethlehem Township, Easton, PA.”

Ilene Psaty Mirman Ilene moved to Sarasota, FL 30 years ago from Great Neck, Long Island, NY. In Florida Ilene owns a real estate firm and has been selling in Sarasota for a long time.

1967 Linda Feustel Greiner Linda is a retired first grade teacher who taught for 33 years. She is now living in paradise, Sarasota, FL, with her husband, Dan. Linda enjoyed the 2005 Harcum Regional Luncheon in Sarasota, reminiscing about fun times and would love to hear from her classmates.

“I enjoyed my first trip to Florida with Geoff Harrington as a staff member representing Harcum College.

Reconnecting with other alums spanning over 60 years was both heart warming and historical for Harcum College. We visited with alums on both the East Coast and the West Coast of Florida. Our stops included Boca Raton and Sarasota. Our fabulous hostess, Ilene Psaty Mirman ’63, treated all of us to a wonderful reunion at the Ritz, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.”

Barbara is a retired pre-school teacher living with her husband, Vince, in Bradenton, FL. Thanks to Harcum’s Sarasota Regional Luncheon, she has reconnected with Florence Flogel ’68. Barbara would enjoy hearing from her former classmates.

Sally Davidson Katz Sally spent 14 years working as a Medical Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins University. Both she and her husband retired five years ago and have filled their time traveling the globe. Their excursions include tours of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Cuba, and Antarctica. Sally and her husband have two adult sons, one on the East Coast and the other on the West. 1966 Harriet Sokolow Josephson “I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University in 1973. I have two adult children and one grandson. I live in Springfield, IL, with my husband, Alan, and I am looking forward to retiring at the end of this calendar year from working for Social Security Disability. I make the determinations as to whether people are disabled when they apply for Social Security Disability or SSI. This is a federal program.

Virginia Decker Nahas Virginia writes about Harcum: “It was the first time I was ever away from home. I

loved every minute of my two years at Harcum. I made many wonderful friends, learned so much about life and getting along in the world. The administration and the teachers imparted many valuable life lessons. I am very grateful. It was especially nice to come back for the President’s Reception in October for Harcum’s 90th.

“What a fantastic time I had at the October 2005 reunion at Harcum. I had not been to Harcum since the 1970s, so it was great to come back. I rented a car and brought my friend, Victoria Quigley, along with me to share the weekend. When I got to the campus, I cried. I felt like I was home again. The reception at the President’s house Friday night was very nice. It was great seeing the inside of the house where I once did some baby sitting. On Saturday morning, I went on a trolley tour of Philadelphia. We had a great time with the guide seeing the places, hearing his comments, and laughing a lot. Saturday afternoon there was a tea party at the President’s house and we all were to wear hats. It was fun seeing the different hats that people wore. Prizes were given out for various categories. The dinner Saturday night was very fine. The tent idea was great but I should have worn a coat, I was cold.

In conclusion, Sunday morning, they had brunch in Klein Hall. Only a few came, but it was real friendly and warm. I also used to work in Klein Hall on the weekends serving the food. I believe that everyone had fun!

I retired in September 2004 after working 30 years for the Marine Corps. I now work part-time for Fairfax County (VA) Alcohol and Drug Services as a receptionist. I enjoy

my work. I am glad to be retired but still like working part-time. My son, Jason, recently moved to Florida. I miss him but know he needed to spread his wings. My cat, Lester, 14 years old, had cancer and was put to sleep. I am dealing with the loss, but I am very sad. I plan to get another cat soon.

Elizabeth Cook Werth “I received a BS in Education from National College of Education in Evanston, IL, but never took a teaching job. I worked for 25 years at Kemper Financial Services as director of the mutual fund state registrations. I have two daughters. I retired in 1999 and I am the happy grandmother of six grandchildren who live within the area.

My husband, Bill, and I love to travel. We ride roller coasters whenever we can and belong to the American Coaster Enthusiasts (8,000 members worldwide). We own a 1955 Thunderbird and travel with the local Classic Thunderbird Club of Chicagoland.

1970 Mary Amonitti Mary was chosen as one of four speakers featured in “Spirited Harcum Women: Four Life & Career Building Stories” at Harcum’s 2005 Alumni Reunion Dinner.

Mary, the 15th of 18 children in her family, shared her experiences about starting and maintaining a small business. She also shared how she learned to balance her active career, volunteer work, and her four children and family. Currently, as a third career, she enjoys life as a TV talk show host in Hilton Head, SC. At the same time she creates quilts, among other crafts and artwork, for new single mothers and their babies. Mary attended Harcum in the early 70s and went on to earn a degree while working on campus.

Marlene Teplick Stewart “I graduated from Glassboro University in 1973 with a degree in Elementary Education. I was a Director at a large day care center until 1996. 1971 Laurie Forbes Laurie was one of four speakers featured in “Spirited Harcum Women: Four Life & Career Building Stories” at Harcum’s 2005 Alumni Reunion Dinner. Unfortunately, Laurie’s flight was grounded at the Miami airport by bad weather and she was unable to attend the Reunion. In her prepared remarks, Laurie explained how she began her education with a two-year degree in Liberal Studies at Harcum College, went on to earn a Master’s degree at Barry University, and to build her career including a psychotherapy practice in Miami, Florida.

Laurie thanked Harcum College for helping to provide her with a strong academic foundation. Last year Laurie was appointed to Harcum’s National Alumni Board, and she is hosting a regional luncheon in Miami on March 18th, 2006. All Harcum alumni are welcome to attend.

Eileen Mycek Ryan “I am a Certified Professional Medical Staff Manager at the Medical Society of Philadelphia County, PA. In October, I was regretfully unable to attend Harcum’s Alumni Reunion Weekend, because I helped plan and attended the annual House of Delegates Meeting for the Philadelphia County Medical Society in Hershey, PA, on the same weekend. It was an exciting weekend as Lila Stein Kroser, MD, had her Inaugural Ball, and she is one of only a handful of women to be named President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. It was an eventful and special weekend.”

1972 Beth Heine Lampe “I currently live in Fairview Park, Ohio.

When I graduated I continued my studies and became a L.P.N. I worked in the ER and ICU at a local hospital. When I married 29 years ago, my husband and I decided to have a family right away, and I had four children in five years. When my two youngest were enrolled in nursery school I was able to teach at their school for several years. My husband and I run a wire distribution business, serving the United States, Canada, and Mexico. I attribute my successful job changes to the educational background I received from Harcum. My three daughters have graduated from four-year colleges and have jobs. My son is in his senior year at Baldwin Wallace College. He is captain of his swim team. I have volunteered in many capacities for the PTA and I am a past president. I‘ve taught Sunday School for ten years. I am also involved in a women’s club that raises money for the betterment of our community. I think volunteering is as important as working, and I am busy at both. We recently adopted a shelter dog named Murphy. He has been very challenging but worthwhile. He comes to work with us everyday. I am happy in marriage and in life and I really do appreciate my education at Harcum. It gave me the confidence that I can achieve anything in life.”

Nancy Straitz Tryens “After graduating from Harcum, I attended Beaver College, now Arcadia, where I received my BA and MA. I taught for a very short time prior to going into business and working for my family’s business. My husband, Drew, and I have three grown children. Our eldest daughter is at Temple, in Psychology, our son works full time for the business, and our youngest daughter is at Montgomery County Community College, taking business. There are several times that I reflect on the days at Harcum; I not only learned a good deal which I’ve utilized in my adult life, but I was fortunate enough

“My husband, Jim, and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in February. We are heading to St. Thomas for this big celebration! Our daughter Mollie is a senior at Towson University in Maryland, where our son Jeremy is also a sophomore. We like having them nearby!

Mollie went to the University of Miami in Florida for her first two years, and while she loved it and did very well academically, she decided to come back north for the season changes. After always wanting to be a marine biologist she has recently decided she would like to go to law school after graduation in May. Jeremy’s major is Criminal Justice. He will be heading to Australia to study abroad this coming spring semester. What he’d really like to do is find a career that would incorporate his love for playing rugby and paintball!

My husband after 20 plus years of working as a partner in a law firm, decided two years ago he wanted to venture out on his own. With both of the kids away at school, I have a new job! I enjoy working with him everyday and have certainly learned quite a bit since we began this chapter in our lives. I would love to hear from my ‘old friends’ from Pennswood Hall. Richelle Foreman Gunter “I currently live in West Chester, PA, and I have been employed at Resources for Human Development, Inc. in Philadelphia for 11 years. Over the years my daughter Lee attended the Baldwin School right across the street from Harcum. Lee is now an education major at Drexel University.

In my spare time (ha! ha!) my work as an ordained minister and the assistant to the Pastor of the St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester keeps me extremely busy. I still manage to keep in touch with friends from Harcum: Jayne Napper, Daveda Brown, and Deborah Blankenbaker.”

“Not much news with us, except our almost 21 year old son, Lance Corporal David Thompson USMC, returns for his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq on February 25, and he turns 21 on February 26. We are very proud of him and just pray all the time that he will stay safe. Dave and I are avid cyclists and hate the winter. I think we will move someplace warmer when we retire. I get back to the East Coast about once a year, to see my family, but we love Washington State. 1974 Janice Keleshian “Since graduating from Harcum, I worked at Mercy Community Hospital for 27 years.

The first department in the hospital that I worked in was the Laboratory and the last seven years of my employment was in the Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. I worked at the hospital until the day it closed. Presently, I am teaching a Pharmacy Technician Course at CHI Institute in Broomall, PA, which I enjoy very much. The course includes Introduction to Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy, Prescription Order Processing, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology, Computer Information Systems and First Aid/CPR. After completing the courses in-house, the students then go out for 180 hours of externship. I had not been back to Harcum until about two years ago when I attended an open house. Since then I have been trying to attend reunions and other functions. I enjoy volunteering at Harcum and recently became a class agent. This gives me a chance to tell future students how great the college is.”

I have managed to build myself quite a career, ending up in the mortgage industry and doing quite well. I have been married for the past 25 years. I have two adult children, and one currently attends Kutzstown University. I can honestly say that life has really been good. I really look forward to completing my degree I am really excited about being back at Harcum.

I observed a lot of good changes, one being a co-ed college now. Of course it was women only when I originally enrolled in 1975-1977.

Gayle Underhill-Plumb Speaking at a Shenkar College event “After 28 years as an apparel executive/ retail merchant I decided in August 2005 to take a sabbatical from the business, traveling more than 100 days as President of a local maternity retailer last year. Time off was long overdue. I spent the summer at the beach unwinding with family and friends and attending many charity events. I always wanted to write books and for years have devoted much of my free time to my favorite charities. As a first time author I wanted my premier book to benefit charity.

My friend Carmen Marc Valvo, a fashion designer and survivor, was my inspiration.

Famous Faces…Favorite Recipes™ features 100 plus stars and icons with a portion of the proceeds benefiting colorectal cancer research. I hope to publish the book by summer 2006. Besides spending much time working on Famous Faces. I also am working on a “How-to” book and a third book, a coffee table pictorial of my travels around the world to more than 12 countries. I continue to stay active in the industry interviewing and doing freelance work in the interim. In addition I am active as a board member on the Board of Directors for Shenkar College in Israel, mentoring students, helping plan fund raising events, and sponsoring student scholarships to needy individuals. I hope to spend much of my time this year speaking about my books and bringing more awareness to colorectal cancer.”

“Almost 17 years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After leaving Harcum I worked in NJ as a Medical Assistant for an OB/GYN. A few years later I moved to Richmond, VA. and I worked as a Medical Secretary/Transcriptionist. In 1989, when I was diagnosed with MS, I had to stop work and moved home with my parents who lived in Buffalo and later in Ann Arbor, MI. We now live in Mount Pleasant, SC just across the river from Charleston.

I use a cane and walker at home but use a wheelchair when I go shopping or to places where there are a lot of people. Since graduation I have pursued my career and then married in 2000. I now have a two-year old son, Logan Thomas, who is my most precious gift. I love reminiscing and cherishing the memories twice a year with Harcum alumnae including: Mary Jo, Debbie, Elyse, and Dossie and have kept Michelle in my thoughts. We have shared 25 plus years of growing old together. Days may pass but when we get together its like we are still in school and just a bunch of college girls having fun together. Mary Jo Phillips Scholes “In 1982 I graduated from Kutztown University with a BS in Elementary/Special Education. I have been working as a Reading Specialist for the past six years for the Twin Valley School District. Previous to this position I taught third grade in Reading, PA for seven years. Mary Harcum “I love teaching middle school science.

Recently I was asked to be a class agent and to help out as a volunteer at special events at Harcum like the Golf Tournament Fundraiser (you can see a picture of me in a golf cart in this Patches,) Open House nights to recruit new students, and Alumni Reunion Weekend events. I’ve really enjoyed working with the staff in the Office of College Advancement and laugh a lot every time I go to events to work with them. If any of you want to be a class agent, I think you’d have a lot of fun. It’s not really a lot of time; its very flexible: you just come to an event to help out if you can and socialize.

Lorraine Kenney Spiotta Congratulations to Lorraine who was recently featured in the Newark, NJ, StarLedger, (May 2005) in an article about balancing her career, family, and service.

Lorraine has built a company that provides long-term care insurance policies for many groups from corporate to nonprofits. In the article she was quoted as saying, “My husband was very supportive of my decision when I wanted to make my own company.

Now I get to stay at home, take care of both kids, and work at my rewarding job.”

1982 Barbara Haas Hanrahan Barbara was appointed to the Harcum College Board of Trustees in 2005. This was after she served on the National Alumni Board for 2004-05. Barbara reports, “I am recently engaged and really looking forward to marrying Ray Blydenburgh. We share a love of mountain biking, hiking in PA state parks, and being outdoors for most sports. Ray is teaching me to learn karate as he owns studios and teaches all ages including self-defense courses to adult women. We also share a passion for empowering women who are coming out of abusive homes or relationships and trying to rebuild their lives. We can’t wait to be married to each other, life is good. 1990 Cynthia Cisick Canevari Cynthia was one of four speakers featured in “Spirited Harcum Women: Four Life & Career Building Stories,” at Harcum’s 2005 Alumni Reunion Weekend Dinner.

Cindy shared how she utilized her medical, research training, and desire to help others, to launch a proactive breast cancer early screening and detection campaign.

She began by writing articles for her local newspaper and has launched new awareness and education for women on the East Coast. She reports that she is doing well and is recently back to working four days a week as a PTA. She is also leading two teams to walk on the weekend of June 16th and 17th ’06 to raise money for cancer research in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Milford, Delaware. At the beginning of 2005, I was married here in Melbourne, Australia, and am now expecting our first baby in August 2006! This past year, I have also undertaken a diploma program in the natural therapies industry. Not fully sure which diploma I will come out with first (currently, shiatsu). My goal is to utilize my new abilities in the veterinary setting, like many others have already done. I am still working as a veterinary technician, although the term here is “veterinary nurse” and have started to do a few educational seminars for the nurses. Colleen was recently featured in a Delaware County Daily Times (June 2005) article. The article focused on Colleen’s extraordinary ability to help others while she struggled through an agonizing disease. Less than one year after being diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Syndrome, Colleen successfully opened a business dedicated to helping women. Her business, Ladies Workout Express, offers interval training on thirty workout stations designed just for women.

In the article, Colleen is quoted as saying, “The worst year of my life became the best year of my life… It led me to my dream of having my own business and helping other women reach their goals.”

Tracy was appointed to the Harcum College National Alumni Board as a member exofficio and also as the first President of the newly created Young Alumni Board. She is currently a full-time student at Cabrini College on an academic scholarship and is pursuing a bachelor of arts in psychology.

In addition to her studies, Tracy works part-time at Harcum as a tutor and has started a Bible study for current students on campus. Tracy was just recently featured in a national promotional video that is being aired on local TV stations for the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic organization in Philadelphia, PA. Tracy is also the recipient of their 2006 “Learning Through Listening Award.” Tracy says, “I thank God for all of the wonderful accolades that I have received. I just pray that my accomplishments will one day become a light for someone else struggling with dyslexia, or vision/hearing impairments.”

Memories of a Cherished Independence

Writer Cynthia Fellows Young remembers her mother, Helen M. Smith, Class of 1947, Harcum Junior College

G

rowing up in New England beside dairy farms and woods in the 1960s, I remember seeing my mother’s treasured Harcum banner, a 10-inch-long triangle of dark blue. Now I’m all grown up, and after a visit to campus last summer, I realized that the pennant was originally a deep purple and had faded with time. It is still up there in the attic, a simple banner packed with significance.

To my mother, Helen M. Smith, that faded little flag represented the memories she cherished for the rest of her life. It meant delicious independence. And, as I myself grew up and went off to college, she encouraged that independent streak in me. Harcum Junior College, then a two-year women’s college, meant freedom. It meant fun and adventure. New friends. Discovering what she liked. Having the liberty to follow her interests. Cultivating the beginnings of a love affair with the world.

And her rich experiences during that short semester at Harcum never left her.

She married in 1955 and moved to the suburbs to raise a family. I was born in 1956 and my brother, Brian, in 1959. As a child, she encouraged me to stretch my imagination and played along with my childhood fantasies, like running away from home. (“Ah, it’s raining,” she pondered, “Why don’t you run away from home another day, dear?”)

She sat right up front at my dance recitals, concerts, plays, and musicals.

In my late teens, she encouraged me to go to Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. The all-women’s college was only a half-hour away. “I can live at home and commute to class and help you,” I said.

But she would have none of it. She knew that I would become an adult in college, and it would help me blossom into an independent, selfreliant, confident woman. And—thank you, mom—I did!

My mother’s adventure began one autumn day in September, 1947 when she hopped on a train with her trunk at Boston’s South Station.

She was seventeen, with long auburn hair, lively eyes, and a glamorous smile. She couldn’t wait to get out of the house and get as far away from Dorchester as she could. She couldn’t wait to start living! And Harcum Junior College, a day’s train ride to Philadelphia, fit the bill.

Throughout college and after, we traveled on day trips and weekends around New England. We stayed in hunting lodges in Maine, dined on fried clams on Cape Cod, spoke parlez-vous francais in Montreal, and took the overnight ferry to Nova Scotia. She navigated from the passenger side and I chauffeured. She was my best friend.

Her typed college registration card says she signed up for liberal arts courses that year, studying English Composition and singing in the Chorus. She posed for a yearbook picture as a junior and sat for a group shot with all the gals in her dorm. Sitting by the piano, she looks young and happy.

Now, I have a brand new purple banner draped across my mirror. It says Harcum College. My mother would be ecstatic to see Harcum’s excellent degree programs for men and women in the veterinary, dental, and nursing fields. And I can hear her voice counseling me, “Live, live, live! Your college years will teach you how to live life to the fullest!”

But she didn’t last long in her second year at Harcum. Just after Thanksgiving she had to leave. After lying feverish in her dorm room for several days, she was taken to the hospital. She had contracted juvenile diabetes. Her mother came down on the train and took her home.

In a few years, when she felt better, she started to live life again.

She enrolled in secretarial school at Boston’s Bryant and Stratton.

She wouldn’t sit still for long. She worked at Northeast Airlines for a few years, nurturing her love of traveling.
