STUDIOS CANOPY FOR PARTHIA the

With final fundraising and construction set to begin, the historic tugboat Parthia and a new Tugboat Heritage Walk at Percival Landing is underway. A longtime participant in the Harbor Days tug festival and races, Parthia previously worked in the Olympia harbor for 40 years. She first towed and docked ships at the Port for Delta V. Smyth Tugs & Barges and later for what is now Foss Maritime. But under a new private owner, Parthia sank in Hood Canal in early August 2017 and was donated to the South Sound Maritime Heritage Association (SSMHA) for restoration and shoreside public exhibit. The SSMHA accepted the tug, initially funded the project, and called on its many maritime historyinterested friends, companies and organizations to help. Local firms Thomas Architectural Studio Design Studio stepped forward to donate exhibit pavilion design services, and Forma Construction provided planning and building services. Subsequently the Port of Olympia approved a permanent exhibit site for the tug exhibit at the entrance to the Farmers’ Market and adjacent to the Marine Terminal. Today, after contributions of more than $250,000 in cash, resources and services, the tug exhibit is nearing completion. However more funding is needed to complete the project and establish an on-going maintenance endowment. Together with Olympia’s other historic tug Sand Man on display next to the Olympia Oyster house, the two historic icons of Olympia’s working waterfront history will be part of a new year-around “Tugboat Heritage Walk” (THW) attraction of the new Maritime Washington Maritime National Heritage Area (MWNHA), scheduled to be in operation in spring 2023. This will allow the tugs and “Tugboat Walk” to receive sustaining federal and local matching funds. To learn more about the Parthia and Tugboat Heritage Walk projects and the MWNHA, and to donate, visit the SSMHA booth at the Harbor House on Percival Landing, see www.maritimeoly.org or write SSMHA at P.O. Box 2351, Olympia WA 98501.

Erich Ebel will present an overview of Olympia’s maritime history and his book. Chuck Fowler will provide an update on all South Sound Maritime Heritage Association activities.

Written by Erich R. Ebel, a lifelong Washingtonian with considerable interest in nautical heritage, collaborating with maritime historian and author Chuck Fowler, Exploring Maritime Washington is as much an indispensable travel guide as it is a thorough history book. Look for its release from The History Press publishers in April 2023. The Maritime Washington National Heritage Area is a region-wide partnership program that strengthens, shares, and connects our state’s maritime communities. The many peoples and organizations along Washington’s saltwater shorelines often have limited opportunity to collaborate and celebrate their vibrant maritime cultures. That’s why Maritime Washington partners with diverse, cross-sector organizations throughout the region to strengthen ties within the maritime community and share stories with residents and visitors alike. Anchor organizations in Thurston County are the South Sound Maritime Heritage Association, Experience Olympia and Beyond, the Port of Olympia and the City of Olympia. Expected to open in early 2023!

Exploring Maritime Washington is the first authoritative travel guide to the state’s nautical heritage, telling the colorful story of the Coast Salish people’s original residency and seafaring for thousands of years, early exploration and settlement by European-Americans in the late 18th century, and expansion and growth into today’s innovative high tech, culturally diverse international maritime economy. In 2019, Congress designated nearly 3,000 miles of Washington’s coastline as a maritime-themed National Heritage Area, which includes hundreds of fascinating museums, ships, tribal sites, lighthouses, and other historic attractions. The new Exploring Maritime Washington guidebook is an insider’s historical travel guide to this fascinating region that also includes the Lewis & Clark Expedition’s path down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean.
