Preserving THE Parthia

Plans for the historic tugboat Parthia maritime attraction and a new Tugboat Heritage Walk at Percival Landing are underway. A longtime participant in the Harbor Days tug festival and races, Parthia previously worked in the Olympia harbor for 40 years. She first towed and docked ships at the Port for Delta V. Smyth Tugs & Barges and later for what is now Foss Maritime. But under private ownership, Parthia sank in Hood Canal in early August 2017 and was donated to the South Sound Maritime Heritage Association (SSMHA) for restoration and shoreside public exhibit.

Together with Olympia’s historic tug Sand Man, the two historic icons of Olympia’s working waterfront history will be part of a new year-around “Tugboat Heritage Walk” (THW) attraction of the new Maritime Washington Maritime National Heritage Area (MWNHA) who will have a booth at the Port Plaza. To learn more about the Parthia and Tugboat Heritage Walk projects, and to donate, stop by the Harbor House on Percival Landing, see www.maritimeoly.org or write SSMHA at P.O. Box 2351, Olympia WA 98501.
