Bay View Wine Trail The ten wineries that make up the Bay View Wine Trail are located in and around the greater Petoskey area, not far from Little Traverse Bay. They’re part of a larger Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area, which encompasses 2,760-square miles throughout Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet and Presque Isle counties in the northern Lower Peninsula. Established in August 2016, the Tip of the Mitt is located further north than any of the other American Viticultural Areas and is the latest of five federally-recognized AVA areas in Michigan. The others include Old Mission Peninsula, Leelanau Peninsula, Fennville and Lake Michigan Shore. Michigan’s wine, grapes, and related industry is no small thing. It contributes $5.4 billion in economic impact, including $253 million in tourism spending and creates more than 47,000 jobs. Terminology If you’re wondering what the difference is between a wine room and a wine cellar, you’re not alone. In fact, sometimes the terms are used interchangeably, and sometimes incorrectly. Passive wine cellars are not climate-controlled and are usually built underground to reduce temperature swings. An above ground wine cellar is often called a wine room, while a small wine cellar (holding fewer than 500 bottles) is sometimes termed a wine closet. Quality Lighting There are many wine cellars in which lighting was an after-thought. Plan your lighting while planning the racks—low voltage within the racks, track lighting in the ceiling, or whatever your pleasure. Racks that Maximize the Space Certain types of bins store more effectively than others. The goal is to have a racking design that maximizes space. A Shelf or Counter for Staging and Serving Find an area within the racks where there can be a small counter or tabletop. This comes in handy when you are unloading cases or grabbing bottles for dinner. An Organizational System for the Racks It can be a real challenge to keep track of a collection once it is racked. Create a labeling system ahead of time and assign a label to each area. Dedication is key to keeping organization in place. A Focal Point This could be an arch, an open niche in the racking for a piece of art or something similar. The idea is to make the room into something more than a room full of racks. Storage Specific to Bottle Types or Sizes This is becoming more important as more and more vineyards are making odd shaped bottles. Many odd shaped bottles, along with most burgundy size bottles, will not fit into a bin designed for 750s. The Correct Type of Wood Racks There are many kinds of wine storage friendly wood, but stay away from cedar as it can emit an unfavorable odor. Some racking manufacturers state that their cedar does not have an odor. At the end of the day, avoid cedar so you don't need to worry about it. Racking Elements for Your Collecting Habits These components can include individuals, diamonds, rectangular bins and more. (In this case, the wine room has individual racks.) Think about how you collect while designing the racks. If you don't buy cases, go light on diamonds and rectangular bins. If you like to leave your wines in the wood cases, be sure to get lots of racks for wood case bins.

Nothing draws people to a Michigan shoreline as a spectacular sunset does. Nearly everyone enjoys them, most people savor them, and countless people try to capture them with their camera so they can re-experience the sunset at home. Taking pictures of sunsets that look like pictures is easy. These pictures can tend to look very two-dimensional or flat and not exciting the photographer or viewers. Making photographic images of sunsets that cause us to mentally step into the scene and imagine we are there — feeling the beach sand, touching the dune grass, smelling the lake air, and basking in the warmth of the sun — requires a little thought but is not difficult. Foremost, we need a good sunset to shoot. A clear sky might seem good, but a cloud-filled sky with space for the sunlight to break through will likely yield far more colorful and dramatic sunset images. Remember, when it comes to outdoor photography, we teach workshop students that “clouds are your friends.” Storms approaching or sliding by our vantage point can generate an especially dramatic degree of color, darkness, and lightness. We call this “Storm Light,” and it allows for the creation of “Whiskey Shots” that have a powerful beauty. Keep in mind that if the weather is presenting any potential danger, we always retreat to a safe place well before the storm is upon us. Summer haze, mist, and fog can also provide an atmosphere for a less colorful but atmospheric look, producing a softer “Wine Shot.” These types of images might not jump out at us but the longer we look at them, the better, more relaxed we feel. We’ve spent much of our lives photographing throughout Michigan, especially along the west shore of Lake Michigan in northern Michigan. Often called the “Sunset Side” because the sun sets in the west, there is no need to roll out of bed early to capture the sun. Our favorite times to shoot and experience “Magic Light” range from the “golden hour” before sunset and the “afterglow hour” after sunset.
Build your image like a layer cake; in a way that all three layers— foreground, middle ground, and background—fit perfectly together to make the most beautiful picture possible. Once we are in place and hopefully in the presence of “Magic Light,” all we need to do is find something interesting to place in the foreground, such as the area where the sand and water meet. Placing part of a boat dock or the bow of a boat in the bottom of your viewfinder are other examples of strong foreground options that will create a bottom layer to your image. Water and waves might make excellent mid-ground elements. The sun and clouds will complete the “layer cake” you are building. Remember, a strong foreground is the most important layer of your picture in making the viewer feel like they are really there in the scene rather than just looking at a picture. Now for that perfect exposure. Leaving your camera on any auto mode and then shooting straight at the sun is almost certain to yield what at first looks like a very dramatic image you think you are happy with. But it will most likely be underexposed, with no detail in the shadow areas. To see how much better looking and feeling that image can look with more exposure, meter the light with the sun just out of your viewfinder. Lock in that exposure and recompose with the sun back in the viewfinder. The resulting brighter image will undoubtedly look and feel much more beautiful. Most high-quality cell phones today give you the ability to select which area you want the phone’s camera meter to use to determine exposure. With these phones, simply move the camera’s metering cursor to a darker area of the picture to make a brighter image. If your next shot is too bright, move the cursor to a somewhat brighter midtone area to make the image look and feel the way you choose. Bringing along and using a tripod enables us to more precisely frame the scene, keep horizon lines straight, and most important, ensure
sharp images by preventing camera movement on the slow shutter speeds necessary to make a good exposure in low light. As it gets darker (sometimes seeming too dark and less emotionally moving), the tripod opens up a whole new visual world. Digital cameras can literally see in the dark, and, unlike our eyes, they can accumulate light. Often as the quantity of light in the sky gets lower, the quality and beauty of the light get higher. Longer exposures make the image brighter than the eye can see, often revealing gorgeous, saturated color barely visible to the eye. Digital cameras — regardless of price, type, and quality — give us instant feedback. We don’t have to wait to see our photographic successes and disappointments. Instant feedback enables photographers to make certain they go home with the beautiful sunset image they envisioned instead of having to wait until the next trip to the shoreline to try again. Don’t be intimidated by your camera; sunset photography is not difficult and should be fun. To make better sunset images, carefully compose your dream picture and then simply remember that bright sun will want to fool your camera into making your picture too dark. To help lower your anxiety do a little homework with your camera manual or online tutorial to know how to make exposure adjustments with your particular camera. Savor the sunset and the afterglow. Expand your photographic horizons by using a tripod to shoot long after many photographers, even professionals, have headed for the ice cream shop. You can make images that feel as good as your world-class Michigan sunset experience.
