MISSION, MOTTO & DIVERSITY STATEMENT OUR MISSION “HARBOR CHERISHES CHILDHOOD, CULTIVATES WONDER AND INSPIRES CONFIDENT LEARNERS AND LEADERS.” These are the core, guiding principles at Harbor Country Day School, and the source of both our vision and energy. OUR MOTTO “SINE LABORE NIHIL - WITHOUT WORK NOTHING” From its very beginning in 1958, the motto of Harbor Country Day School has been the same, from the Latin poet Horace: “Sine labore nihil,” translated as, “Without work nothing.” For six decades, our graduates have remembered the school’s motto as one of life’s truths -- that nothing comes without hard work. The students are taught how to work with purpose, and also how to make it fun. Preschoolers may sing songs in Mandarin at the Confucius Institute’s annual Chinese New Year Celebration; science students may travel on the school’s bus to explore and analyze nearby wetlands; and English class may read, discuss, and write about a complex novel that strikes at the heart of a young adolescent’s concerns. Harbor teaches and shows by example that creative, purposeful, enjoyable work is an essential part of a fully-lived life.
OUR DIVERSITY STATEMENT Harbor believes celebrating diversity enriches the lives of everyone, and that embracing the essence of each individual makes us stronger as a school community. We honor different perspectives, cultures, ways of life and the beliefs people bring when they walk through our doors. ABOUT HARBOR COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL Founded in 1958 by a group of devoted parents, Harbor Country Day School is a nonprofit, independent school for preschool through eighth grade located on Long Island’s north shore, nestled in the quiet Village of Head of the Harbor. It’s a school where children are encouraged to be who they are and where differences are celebrated. Because of this solid foundation of acceptance and love, students at Harbor are confident, selfaware, and happy -- and they love to come to school. Harbor students approach learning with a fearlessness that only comes from knowing that they will be safe and accepted regardless of whether they succeed or fail. MEET OUR EMCEE, HARRY SANTA-OLALLA ABOUT HARRY Harry is a professional auctioneer and experienced fundraising consultant, with a passion and proven ability to help not for profits raise more through their auctions and pledge drives. Born and raised in the UK, Harry began his fundraising career in London. He worked closely with many of Europe’s largest not for profits, utilizing technology and an engaging methodology to help them raise more at gala benefits. Identifying New York as the fundraising capital of the world, he ‘hopped the pond’ full time in 2014, and has not looked back since. Harry now supports many of the largest not for profits stateside, both as a precampaign consultant, and on stage during the events themselves. Harry has a methodical approach to fundraising; utilizing data from previous years, as well as analysis of event formats and guest demographic to help clients set and challenge their audience to achieve ambitious fundraising goals. On average, with close to 70% of all audiences having not paid for their individual ticket to attend any given benefit, Harry prides himself on maximizing audience participation in the auction or pledge drive call to action. He has a unique ability to tastefully draw something out of everyone, uniting rooms to a common fundraising goal, coupled with integrity and a sharp wit.

ABOUT OUR PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION CO-CHAIRS Cynthia Wong Lippe Jennifer Tona The Parents’ Association is dedicated to promoting a sense of community, facilitating communication between Harbor and its families, and raising funds for programs and events that enrich and enhance school life. Parents’ Association participation is an amazing opportunity to get to know other families, experience a slice of Harbor students’ school lives, and become involved in the life of Harbor. The group meets on a monthly basis. For more information about the many ways parents can contribute, the Parents’ Association coordinators may be reached at parentsassociation@hcdsny.org. Below is a list of events and programs the Parents’ Association sponsors: ANNUAL SPRING BENEFIT The Parents’ Association’s major fundraising event is the annual Spring Benefit, which is an exciting and elegant evening for parents, alumni, trustees, friends, faculty, and staff. The event includes live and silent auctions, dancing, dinner, and open bar. Live and silent auction items are donated by the Harbor community and many local merchants who support our mission. Other highlights of the evening include Harbor’s Own Budding Artists Collection and the “Fund-A-Grant” auction, which gives attendees an opportunity to donate directly to specific school initiatives at a designated level of support. Previous Fund-A-Grant items have included new student iPads, SMART boards, technology advancement, science lab equipment, physical education and recess equipment, and professional development. 10
BOOK FAIR The Book Fair celebrates the love of reading with our children. Each student may purchase books from the Book Fair during school hours. In addition, in an effort to enrich the classroom and school libraries, we promote the Teacher’s Wish List program, enabling teachers to select desired books for their classroom libraries. Parents have the opportunity to purchase these books for the school, and an acknowledgment of the family’s generosity is affixed to the inside of the book. FAMILY FUN NIGHT Family Fun Night is a great evening of family fun, challenges and healthy competition, with ‘heart-pounding’ activities for all ages to enjoy. All students and their families are invited to come, bring their best game and/or their best cheering voice and enjoy! This event is typically held off the Harbor campus at a sports facility. Food and refreshments are served. GINGERBREAD EXTRAVAGANZA All students are invited to take part in making delicious edible gingerbread houses during Harbor’s annual Gingerbread Extravaganza. Gingerbread materials are bought fresh from a local bakery, with the houses assembled and ready for decorating. This event is a favorite of all students, as they relish this opportunity to explore their inner architects and designers. HARBOR CLOSET The Harbor Closet is a collection of gently used uniforms that have been donated by Harbor families. It is open to all families throughout the year, and families are encouraged to take what they might be able to use and donate what they no longer need.

HARBOR CULTIVATES WONDER SPEAKER SERIES Through the Harbor Cultivates Wonder Speaker Series, the Parents’ Association sponsors guest speakers, at various times throughout the school year, to cover such topics as media, literacy, safety, nutrition, and parenting. HARBOR SUPER RAFFLE The Super Raffle is an exciting way to support the school and have a chance to win $10,000 in cash or free tuition for the upcoming school year. The proceeds from the Harbor Super Raffle are used to fund tuition assistance and other student programs. The winner of the Super Raffle is drawn at Harbor’s Annual Spring Benefit. TRUNK OR TREAT Trunk or Treat is a cherished, longstanding Harbor tradition. All students and their families are invited to arrive in costume to enjoy a safe and frightfully fun-filled time trick-or-treating on Harbor Country Day’s field. The field is turned into a safe “neighborhood” of decorated and treat-filled car trunks for our little goblins to enjoy. Children also enjoy fun, games, and story-telling in the school gym.

ABOUT HARBOR’S ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Harbor’s Alumni Relations Office helps to foster and continue lasting relationships between Harbor’s alumni and the school they graduated from and love. The foundation for these relationships is built through communication, organized group events, opportunities to volunteer, and helping to create connections among Harbor’s many alumni. The Harbor Alumni Facebook page is an online community where alumni can reminisce about Nissequogue and Nesconset competitions, Greenkill and Frost Valley trips, the Spring Musical, Trunk or Treat, and other Harbor traditions and experiences that have formed the basis of so many lifelong friendships. We encourage you to visit the page and take time to share your personal stories, reconnect with us at Harbor, network with your fellow alumni, and become an active member of the vibrant Harbor alumni community. You may also keep abreast of happenings at Harbor by following the school’s official Facebook page, Instagram, and Linkedin feeds. We always welcome our alumni with open arms, at any time of the year, and our current students enjoy the opportunity to visit with the alumni who walked the halls of Tulip Knoll before them.

2021 FUND-A-GRANT CLASSROOM UPDATE & ENRICHMENT SUPPLY Expanding the classroom library and replacing “over-read” books; embellishing the play spaces with a wooden kitchen set or wood puzzles and learning toys; purchasing a new rug for circle time; or an up-todate interactive board and projector. How better to inspire students to create, imagine, wonder and learn than to provide updated supplies and refresh spaces to be in line with Harbor’s evolving curriculum and more environmentally friendly classroom supplies?! With your generosity making it possible, the addition of building supplies, read-aloud books, classroom storage and enhancements will provide students with the necessary tools in an ideal environment for exploration and learning. EAST-SIDE ENTRANCE & PATIO MAKEOVER Harbor’s east-side entrance and patio, adjacent to the Preschool Playground, has long been in need of a makeover and, this year, we want to make that wish come true! Your contributions would make it a reality. Areas that would receive our TLC will include the surrounding fencing and gate and the entrance patio to the existing dining room (currently our 8th Grade classroom). An overhaul of the area will not only provide a safer and more secure area for students to play, explore, and develop friendships, but it will also create a safe and beautiful area for hosting small-scale events such as class picnics and meet-and-greets. AUDIO-VISUAL TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS Never has it been more evident, as it has over the course of the past year, how integral the role technology plays in the education of Harbor’s students. The All School Meetings, Commencement, Grandfriends Day, and State of the School wouldn’t have been possible without the use of tablets, laptops, ‘gooseneck’ cameras and, of course, everyone’s favorite… ‘Zoom.’ We have learned that expanding and integrating technology for our events is here to stay as we anticipate many of our events being live-streamed even when COVID no longer limits our normal interactions. With your gift, Harbor will be able to enhance the audio-visual capabilities of our gymnasium for future all school meetings and to allow for more robust programs and larger audience attendance via event live-streams in the future. 14
26TH SPRING BENEFIT HONOREES HEIDI GIFFUNI Heidi spent 21 years of dedicated service at Harbor Country Day school, in a wide variety of roles. Her work touched so many areas of school life that, for many in the Harbor community, Heidi was the face of Harbor. In her time at Harbor, Heidi was the Director of Camp Harbor for 11 years, as well as a mainstay in the front office as Alumni Relations Coordinator and Administrative Assistant to the Head of School. She served as a member of the marketing, alumni, and building and grounds committees, co-chair of the safety committee and as an Upper School Advisor. Heidi and her husband, Geoff, are also the proud parents of three Harbor Alumnae. Just as important as these ‘official’ positions was Heidi’s role as the unofficial archivist and source of referencing everything Harbor, from knowing the names of so many past parents, board members, and longlost alumni, to knowing where every electrical outlet, student file, and school supply was located! Even today, in Heidi’s retirement, when people have questions that no one else can answer, they ask Heidi!

26TH SPRING BENEFIT HONOREES (CONT’D) THE BUBARIS FAMILY The Bubaris Family joined Harbor Country Day School nearly 20 years ago when their daughters, Philly and Dessy, were in the fifth and second grade. At that time, George shuttled between his two restaurants and Joan worked in financial planning. Harbor offered a peace of mind for them. They knew that their daughters were being kept safe in a nurturing environment with solid core values and a strong curriculum. Philly graduated in 2005, and Harbor’s School Spirit Award was created in her name. Dessy followed suit and was the recipient of the Headmaster Award for the 2008 graduating class. Through the years, George made a name for himself as the first man to join the Parents’ Association and as the grill master for the annual Harbor Picnic. In 2012, he joined the Board of Trustees as secretary and continued in various roles and multiple committees until a couple of years ago. Today, George and Joan own an art framing company called ‘Parthenon Framing.’ They frequent art shows accompanied by their Pekingese puppies Billy and Willy - they are quite the art critics! Philly graduated from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and a MBA in Management. After a career in network news, Philly is now the Deputy Director of the Office of the CEO of Montefiore Medicine. Dessy graduated from Marywood University and is a registered dietitian. She is now living in Baltimore as she pursues a Masters in Nursing at Johns Hopkins University. 16
