CensorWagner’sMusicinIsrael

RichardWagnerwasageniusGermanwriterandcomposerwhosemusicwaspopularduringthelate1800s. He’sknownasoneofthemostinfluentialcomposersinallofmusichistory.However,Wagnerwasa passionateanti-semite,speakingofthe“harmfulinfluenceofJewryonthemoralityofthenation.” His opera,“TheRingCycle”wasafeedinggroundforNaziideologyandculturalconception.Today,thedebate stillgoesonaboutwhetherornotWagner’smusicshouldbeallowedtobeplayedinIsrael.

Wagnerconsideredhimselfaphilosopherfirst,andcomposersecond.Helivedlongbeforethebirthof Nazism,buthewasperceivedasthespiritualfatherofNaziideology.Therefore,Wagner’smusicshouldnot beplayedinIsrael,atleastaslongasthereareHolocaustsurvivorsalive.TheHolocaustwasatraumatictime formanypeople,andweshouldrespectthosewhoareoffendedbyhismusic,evenifitistheopinionofthe minority.

Despitethecontroversy,therearepeoplewhofeelthatWagner’smusicshouldbeallowedtoplayinIsrael. TheyarguethattheyplayCarlOrff,whowasaself-declared,card-holdingNazi. Ifthey’reallowedtoplay Orff’smusic,theyshouldbeabletoplayWagner.Othersalsoadvocatethat“onemustseparatepoliticsfrom music”andthat“emotionshouldnotstandinthewayofart”.However,musicisfullofemotion.When listeningtomusic,itmakesyoufeelsomething;people“reacttomusicwiththeirhearts,ratherthanwith theirminds.”

EventhoughmanyareconvincedthatWagner’smusicshouldnotbeplayed,asacompromise,hismusiccould bebannedingovernment-fundedfacilities,likeradiosandtrains.However,hismusiccouldbeperformedin privatesettings,likewhen,in1981,theIsraelPhilharmonicorchestraofferedanencoreofWagner’smusic, statingthatifanyonedidn’twanttolistentheywerefreetoleave.Somepeopleleft,andtheorchestra continuedasscheduled.Aslongaseveryoneconsentstoit,Wagnercouldbe playedprivately.

AlthoughWagnerwasagiftedGermanwriterandcomposer,hismusicremainscontroversial. Becauseheis believedtobeamongthefoundersofNaziideology,hismusicwouldbeoffensivetothoseofJewishdescent.It shouldonlybepermittedinprivatesettings,notsupportedinpublicand/orgovernment-fundedplaces.

BirdsareMyHobby

Ihavealwaysbeencuriousabouttallwadingbirdsingeneral,butafterreadingaboutthem,I decidedthatcraneswerethemostinteresting.Inparticular,theredcrown,greycrown,sandhill andwhoopingcranesareamazingspecies.

Thewhoopingcraneweighsabout15pounds,isabout5feettall,and hasa7-footwingspan. Ithasaverylongtracheathatmakesitscall carryverylongdistances. Ithasasmoothgait,butwhenitis courting,itleaps,sweepsitswings,andpumpsitshead.Todaythere areonly600remaining,about440inthewildand160incaptivity.

SandhillCraneslivenearmarshesandprairiesacrossnorthern NorthAmericaandthesoutheasternUnitedStates.Astheymigrate overhead,youwillbeabletoheartheirbuglingcallsthatsoundlike atrumpet.Theoldestsandhillonrecordwasover37yearsold! Since1974,ithasbeenconsideredathreatenedspecies.

Red-crownedcraneshaveblackandwhitebodies, withredcrowns.Theyarefoundinmarshlandsand wetlandsandotheropenareas.Youmayhaveseen thempicturedinAsianpaintings.

Grey-crownedcranesareevenmorespectacularwiththeirgolden,yellowrust crowns.Theylikewetlands, grasslands,andman-madebodiesof water.They havealowbugling“maaah-hem”callanddonotmigrate.

Ofthe15speciesofcranes,thewhoopingcraneistherarest,buttheyallhavefascinatingfacts andfeatures.Iamespeciallyinterestedinhelpingtokeepthemfrombecomingendangered.
