Harbor Welcomes Mr. Andy Sperling by Anthony Silva I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Cissel in our last issue of The Harbor Hub. For this issue, I am excited to welcome Mr. Andy Sperling, our next head of school. We met him . when he visited in September, but he was kind enough to allow me to ask him a few questions so that we could be better acquainted before his July 1 start date.
What made you apply for this job?
Several aspects of HCDS really piqued my interest: The mission “cherishing childhood” and a dedication to hard work - “Sine labore nihil” The focus on community, kindness, and inclusivity The fun traditions like the Gingerbread Extravaganza, Trunk or Treat, and Pi Day
What was your first impression of Harbor during your last visit?
Spending time at Harbor was such an honor for me. My first impression was that kids felt confident and connected. It was obvious that students felt safe and teachers challenged them. It is definitely a very special place. I was struck by how positive and affirming the culture felt. Everyone was very proud of their school.
Do you plan on making any changes to our school?
I don’t. Schools like Harbor grow and evolve because of how dedicated the teachers are to their own growth. With the excitement around the new building additions, there is much to anticipate! It always takes collaboration to make change. So, as we grow together, I can imagine teachers, students, parents, and members of the leadership teams all working together to develop new ideas for HCDS!
What is your philosophy for a Pre-K through 8 school?
- A place where children feel deeply known - A school must live its mission—and be committed to making decisions based on what’s best for kids -Teachers are responsible for helping students feel that they can do more than they imagine
What was your biggest accomplishment in your former school?
I am proud to have played a role in the growth that has taken place at LFCDS. Together, my colleagues and I designed an amazing STEAM Innovation Center. Perhaps I’m also proud of the influence I’ve had on our math program which allows students to feel both challenged, supported, and confident.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? -
I am getting married on April 3rd which is very exciting! My fiancée, Hilary, and I are extremely excited to be moving to Long Island in July and to be a part of such a warm, welcoming school community.
-
I love to build computers as a hobby. Typically, I update and upgrade the parts, but every so often I rebuild the entire thing to keep up with technology advancements.
-
I have been teaching math for over 30 years. My students inspire me – and it would be great to explore ways that I might be able to teach my favorite unit – I call it the Quadratic Conundrum!
-
I am looking forward to sharing more with everyone in the Harbor community.

A shooting in Alabama, for example, might not have made our local news twenty years ago, but is now able to be in our social media feeds moments after it happens, and sometimes even WHILE IT’S HAPPENING! Violence might not be increasing. It could be the amount of violence “shared” by the media and the fact that it can be shared all over the world in an instant.
Do Video Games Promote Violence ?
I do NOT believe that video games promote violence or encourage people to be violent. While it is true that some video games contain violence, they don't promote violence at all. Have you ever heard the saying “Correlation does not mean causation?”
Another reason I don’t believe video games make people violent is because video games are hugely popular around the globe and no other country blames their crime on gaming. If video games made people violent, wouldn’t we see a rise in crime across the globe?
Just because two things happen and appear to be connected doesn’t mean one thing causes the other. For example, we all breathe air and we will all die one day. Does that mean breathing kills you? Nope, quite the opposite; we need to breathe to live! Breathing and dying both occur, but one does not cause the other.
My point is that while some video game titles can sound violent, they don't promote people using violence. Before we had video games, we had violent movies and they didn’t turn everyone who went to the movies into violent criminals.
The problem is that people think video games promote violence, but I am committed to explaining why that is NOT true. People all over the globe play video games, but only in the United States do we hear so many people claim that video games are actually the cause of violence?
The reasons people are violent might include that they are born that way, maybe a trauma or something terrible happened to them that impacted them mentally, or maybe they were raised by violent people and it's all they know. To blame video games seems to be the lazy and easy explanation. Instead, we should focus on the mental health issues that might actually cause people to be violent, instead of blaming gamers who just want to connect with friends and have a good time when not at school or work.
While gaming has become more and more popular year after year, the rate of violent crimes in the USA has actually declined. Video games cannot make people violent if they are gaining in popularity while crime rates are declining. Now you might say, “Jacob, why do we hear about so much violence every day if rates are declining?” Yes, it does seem like every day we hear about violent crimes, but maybe that is a reflection of us living in a more connected world, where we quickly get stories from around the globe.

An Interview With Our Veteran Teachers by Madeleine Tona and Rania Khan
-How has the school changed positively since you first came here? Mrs.McKenna: The school grew in size with the addition that now includes the two math
rooms, history room, student lounge and lockers. The library was moved and the lunchroom made more available. Also, our camp added an in-ground pool.
Mrs. Huang Ernst: Harbor has changed positively with the growth of technology, the new
playground and the beautiful soccer field.
- What is your favorite tradition? Mrs.McKenna: Pi Day Mrs.Huang Ernst: The food drive and Toys for Tots are my favorite traditions. The
Harbor community comes together to help the surrounding community.
- Was Trunk or Treat and the Gingerbread Extravaganza a tradition? Mrs. McKenna: No, both are newer traditions that have become very popular. Mrs. Huang Ernst: Trunk or Treat and the Gingerbread Extravaganza did not became
a tradition until about 20 years ago.
- How long have you been teaching? Mrs.McKenna: 30 years Mrs.Huang Ernst: A very long time
4
-Which class has impressed you the most so far? Mrs.McKenna: I have no favorites; each class has their unique assets. Mrs.Huang Ernst: Each class that I've taught has been special in their own way. I'm glad that each class
has been different from the next. It makes each one memorable.
-Was online learning positive or negative to the school in your opinion? Mrs. McKenna : Online teaching/learning was a benefit to the school at a needed time. I do not think it
was negative. “Think Positive!”
Mrs. Huang Ernst: Online learning was a substitute for in-person learning. Nothing is better than being in person with your class!
-Who were some of the teachers that were at the school when you first came? Mrs. McKenna : Mrs. Sharpe, Ms. Otterspore, Mrs. DeGroot, Mr. DeKnipp, Mr. Schwenk, Dr Irvin, Mrs. Pollina, Ms. Huang-Ernst Mrs. Huang Ernst : Mrs. McKenna
- What is your favorite memory at Harbor? Mrs. McKenna : Graduation! It is so nice to be part of and see students graduate. I’m very proud of them. Mrs. Huang Ernst: I love each graduation - watching each class get ready for their next educational adventure -
always feeling certain that they are well-prepared for high school.
- Would you consider Harbor your second home? Mrs. McKenna: I have made many long-lasting friends at Harbor, so I consider them like family. Mrs. Huang Ernst: Harbor has been a big part of my life for many happy years.

Ms. Woods’ 3rd graders responded to the following challenge: You are offered a special allowance for one month. Which option would you choose and why? a.
Each day you get double the number of pennies you received on the previous day.
b.
You can have a million dollars
I chose the million dollars because if I chose the pennies, it would be WAY less. I would donate half to charity and keep the rest for myself. I would buy a tree-house for my backyard. I have forever wanted a tree-house and that way my dad wouldn’t have to build it for me. ~Sidney Puchner I choose to double the pennies because I think it will be more. I would exchange all the pennies for dollar bills, donate a quarter to charity and another quarter to animals and save half. ~Brinley Berger
If I was given a one million dollar allowance I would give some money to charity. Then some to my mom and dad for our house. I’d use the rest for a business so I could make more money. I would buy gamer gear and be a YouTuber and make even more money. ~Graham Mellert I would choose one million dollars because I would want to donate to charity like the American Heart Association. With the rest, I would get an American Girl Doll, a car, a phone and a gift for my family like a picture frame with a picture of all of us. ~ Noriah Hamdani I chose the million dollars because if I doubled the penny, whatever amount of pennies I got, I would have to divide it by 100 to see how many dollars I get. What I would get with one million dollars is… a bunch of American Girl dolls and every single pair of jeans at Old Navy. I would also donate half to charity. I would like to get Gucci and Hollister clothing and accessories too (handbags and jewelry especially!!) ~Rose Ciotta If I got a million dollars I would give half to charity. Then I would have $500,000 left and with that I would pay the bills and buy a phone. ~Eyupcan Yazici I chose the one million dollars because if you double the pennies 30 times it’s only about $2,000. I would donate half of the money to charity and use the rest to buy something for my family. ~ Katie Ioannou Images by Google

I chose one million dollars because it is more money. If I had a million dollars, I’d give a quarter of it to charity and save the rest for college to be a doctor and mathematician. I would also buy a new car. -Lily Fiore I would choose the pennies. Half would go to a children’s hospital. The other half would go to a homeless shelter. If there was anything left over, I would get a puppy. -Adair Carter If I got $1,000,000 I would donate $250,000 to charity, $250,000 to my family and I would spend the last $500,000 on things I’ve never had like gaming gear or golf clubs and a golf simulator. Maybe a VR set. The reason why I didn’t pick double the pennies for 30 days is because a penny is only 1 cent and doubling that won’t get you over 1 million dollars. I will probably only give you $40 or $37. ~Violet West If I had a million dollars I would buy everything that involves gaming and after I would use some money on charity. I would use the rest on a phone and rent. ~Aiden Alekseyev I would double the penny and with the money I would waste it on high school and college. I would also buy a car. Then I would get a house and the rest I would waste on furniture. ~ John Shinin
$?$?$?$?$?$?$?$?$ What would you do ? Do you know what happens to a penny if it is doubled everyday for a month? Ms. Woods wants you to see what happens to a penny if it is doubled every day for 30 days:
Day 1 - $0.01 Day 2 - $0.02 Day 3 - $0.04 Day 4 - $0.08 Day 5 - $0.16 Day 6 - $0.32 Day 7 - $0.64 Day 8 - $1.28 Day 9 - $2.56 Day 10 - $5.12
Day 11 - $10.24 Day 12 - $20.48 Day 13 - $40.96 Day 14 - $81.92 Day 15 - $163.84 Day 16 - $327.68 Day 17 - $655.36 Day 18 - $1,310.72 Day 19 - $2,621.44 Day 20 - $5,242.88

Spring Things by Juliet Nichols
I see flowers, trees, and lots of bees Now I feel a sudden sneeze I have scrapes on my knees From following the breeze Tripping and twirling Twisting and whirling I could be covered in pine But it would bring out the sunshine I listen to all the birds singing While they are bringing Flowers that were supposed to be ours I could take a hike or ride a bike skip near the tide Or maybe take a horse ride I could buy ice cream It would be like a sweet dream I could lie next to a butterfly But I chose to not to just see one of these, I chose not to see none of these I chose to see them all because spring is just as long as fall. We keep hearing about the video game, Among Us. What the game is about? Among Us is an online game with Crewmates and Imposters. It can be played on a PC, a smartphone, or on Nintendo Switch. The Crewmates try to complete tasks, while the Imposters try to sabotage them. How is it played? Each game starts with 2 teams imposters and crewmates. Most of the players will be Crewmates who have to complete various tasks on the map in order to win the game. Three or fewer players will be Imposters, who look just like Crewmates, but are actually trying to destroy them in order to win the game. Once teams are decided, players are given free reign to run around the map, either completing their tasks as Crewmates or sabotaging the Crewmates as Imposters. Players can call an "Emergency Meeting” if they see that a Crewmate has been destroyed, or if they suspect someone is an Imposter. This is where your deduction and acting skills come into play. The players must now try to figure out who's an Imposter to be ejected from the map. The Crewmates win the game by successfully ejecting all the Imposters, or by completing all their tasks before the Imposters destroy them. The Imposters win by destroying enough Crewmates to have an equal number of Crewmates and Imposters, or by sabotaging a critical component, like an oxygen tank or nuclear generator, that the Crewmates can't fix fast enough. Why do you think it is so popular? Among Us got really popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. This sudden surge of popularity led the developers to add more maps and new features. The popularity of Among Us also led to many memes. It is an easy game to play, so it appeals to all ages. It also is really popular because it supports cross-platform play which allows you to play with your friends, even if they are not on the same device as you. Among Us became popular on Twitch mainly due to the social aspect of the game, which made it almost as entertaining to watch as it is to play. When kids were stuck home in the early months of the pandemic, they liked watching/playing what some describe as “ a fast-paced version of the game Clue”. They could also design their own cute avatar. Images by Google

The Rainbow Bridge by Rachael Lippe Everything hurts. It’s all too bright, it smells too clean. I don’t know why we’re here. I don’t know why we can’t go home. I want to go home. I’m realizing it doesn’t smell like nothing here. It smells like pain. It smells like fear. It smells like grief. “He’s not going to make it,” says a man in a white coat. My girl starts to cry. I want to jump up, and lick those salty tears off her face. I want to protect her from whatever is making her sad, but I can’t move. All I can do is lie here and whine. It makes me feel terrible. It’s my job to make CJ happy, but now I can’t help her. “We need to put her down,” says that man again. CJ is screaming now. It’s loud, sharp, shrill, and terrible. What hurts the most is that I can’t do my job; I need to help her, but I can’t. She runs to me and cries tears into my thick fur, murmuring words like “please,” and “no,” and “why, why, why.” Then something pierces my skin and goes into my shoulder and I whine a little louder, but it doesn’t hurt too much, because CJ puts her hand on my side. I remember warm days at the park, wrestling in the snow, bits of pancake and bacon slipped under the table, and how CJ slept on the kitchen floor with me on nights when the sky was making scary noises. There is more, I realize, in a dog and human relationship than the dog helping their person. It’s also the person helping their dog. It’s both, helping each other. And now I realize that whatever happens next, with my girl by my side, it’ll be okay. It will all be okay.

Happiness at Harbor I was jumping around, visiting schools, to see if they could be potential options when I fell across Harbor. At first, I was terrified! Just the prospect of going to a completely foreign school for two whole days seemed like the scariest thing possible. However, from the second I stepped foot in Mr. Pepe’s classroom, everyone was so welcoming to me! I couldn’t believe how accepting everyone was at my arrival. There was never a second where I felt left out, or couldn’t do anything. I’d like to send a huge thank you to the people who convinced me why Taylor Swift is so phenomenal and why “Sweden is So Sweet.” From my time in Mrs. Baron's math class or the art room, all the teachers were so cordial and compassionate (plus I had an extra fabulous time in English.)Thank you so much, everyone! So, to anyone afraid to try new things, this is your sign to do it. -An Anonymous Visitor

The New “Normal?” A Work of Fiction by Mason D’Aulerio
March 2020 I’m writing in this journal now because my therapist suggested that I would feel better if I wrote down my thoughts throughout the day. So hear I am. Let’s start. To be honest, I never really took mental health and my happiness very seriously. About a month ago, school closed and we went to remote learning. We all thought it would be temporary, like two weeks, but it is beginning to look like it may be two months. At first I thought it would be nice to sleep later and do my classes on zoom, but after a month I started getting sad. I was missing my friends, recess, my teachers, and my eyes were strained from all the screen time. I guess that is when it all started. I just didn’t feel like myself. I was getting depressed and starting to worry about my little brother, who couldn’t really do the remote assignments by himself. My mom scheduled online sessions with a family counselor because she saw that we were all feeling anxious and sad. April 2020 So it’s been pretty depressing after a month of staying “safe” at home, but nothing compared to when my dad got sick. My mom was also not herself. She was so stressed out working from home and trying to keep me and my brother on track with remote learning. Dad had to go to work every day. He was so worried about bringing COVID home to us that he always took off his work clothes and ran upstairs to the shower before he even said hello to us. Since we had done almost nothing during the day, there was not much to talk about during dinner, until one day when Dad said he would be eating in the basement because he was exposed at work and didn’t want to expose the rest of the family. So now, we not only couldn’t be with people outside the family, we couldn’t even be with my father! The therapist says not to watch the news anymore because it is causing so much depression. All we hear about is how many people died in nursing homes, in the hospital, and how social distancing will save us. May 2020 I’ve was just kinda wandering the house, staring at walls. While I wandered I could hear my dad coughing like a mad man. It sounded like he was choking on a horse and they tried to swallow a bowl of bark and nails. I was very concerned about my dad’s health, because he just didn’t sound well. Eventually, he got worse and worse, until he needed to go to the hospital for oxygen. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse…… they do. Eventually my dad was diagnosed with COVID and spent his last days in the hospital, alone. Nothing, since the pandemic started, has gone well. The separation from the world is hard to deal with, but it is even worse now because the person I loved the most lost his fight to stay alive. We had to stay away from him at home while he was coughing, then couldn’t visit him in the hospital. We couldn’t even have a funeral, just a graveside service. June 2020 Mom is so stressed she can’t even help us deal with our anxiety and depression. We have to pretend we are okay so that she won’t worry so much. Nothing ever really happens anymore that is noteworthy. I don’t even know what to write about anymore. We all just sit around, wishing Dad was still here. I guess that Dr. Nomas… oh I forget to write that my therapist’s name is Dr. Nomas. Anyway, I guess Dr. Nomas probably looks over everything I write. Right now I am so sad that I can’t write much. The thought of having another year of remote learning is stressing us all out, especially now that we can’t even look forward to Dad coming home from work and trying to cheer us up. At least school is almost over and sometimes we can see people outside in our driveway. Everything is outdoors now, but still no hanging out with friends or going anywhere. Everything is closed! Is this ever going to end, am I ever going to find anything to be happy about again? Images by Google

July 2020 I haven't really had any motivation to start writing again because there isn’t much to do here at my house except look at a wall. Sometimes I curl up in my bed and start crying because I feel so alone. Sometimes I wonder if we are any better off than Dad. We are not really “living” anymore. I explained to my therapist that my feeling of worthlessness and uselessness keeps me looking at a world of void, an endless dark abyss. No hope. No light. This world is so cruel and unjust. That’s why I went to a therapist. …… Depression is not easy to deal with. The immense sadness you feel is intense. Therapy is not really changing anything, just lets me express the sadness instead of keeping it bottled up. This is enough writing. Writing about it doesn’t help either. There is just no light at the end of this tunnel, but I know my dad would want me to find something positive in this whole ordeal. August 2020 Okay, I am going to try to be positive. Being online is something that helps me stay alive. Surfing the internet wastes my time and takes time out of my day, time that I would usually spend thinking bad thoughts, but as I know, the thoughts will never stop forever. What is also good is that with classes being online I don’t get bullied any more. I also made some new friends who didn’t really talk to me in school, but now they do online. Something different is that I’ve been just kinda wandering the house, staring at walls. Mom found an online support group and that seems to be helping a little. We are becoming closer as a family, even though there will forever be an empty chair at our dinner table. I just heard that my school is going to open full time in September! We will all be 6 ft apart and stay in the same room all day. No walking the halls, no lockers, phys ed will be outside, but at least we are opening. All the other schools are doing what is called “hybrid” learning. That is some days in school and some days remote. I can’t actually say I am “happy,” but I am less sad. I may have to confront the bullies again, but I will also see my friends, teachers, coaches, etc. September 2020 Knowing that my dad is gone and can never come back is heartbreaking. Despite all the sorrow and sadness, the rest of my family has survived. It is a sign I guess. Maybe it is a sign that we were meant to survive. Or, maybe it is a sign that we have the strength to climb back up to some kind of normal? I know that is what Dad would want. I just hope I can do it, for him and for my family. I think it will be easier with school opening. Little by little, things will return to normal. Well, not normal, but at least tolerable. Therapy helped me see that at least my feelings were normal, and that holding them in is not good. I learned to try to find something positive in each day and every situation. I also realize now that my friends were going through the same feelings of helplessness and uncertainty. I got to see Dr. Nomas, my therapist, in person once before he retired. He gave me the name of a new counselor. I think many of us will only get better if we start addressing the impact of COVID on mental health.
October 2020 Dear Greg, You forgot your journal back at my office, so I want to return it to you. By the way, congratulations on getting through the most difficult time of your life. You have been through so much in such a short period of time. You have found the strength to navigate the tough times, and appreciate the good times. I will miss working with you and your family, and wish you all the best. Try to make this “new normal” an experience you can learn from. I know your father would be proud of you! Best to your family- Dr. Nomas Images by Google

Book Review
Inside Out and Back Again by Thannha Lai
by Chloe Roc
Inside Out and Back Again, by Thannha Lai, is a novel about a 10-year old girl who has to flee her country during the Vietnam War. She was very happy living in Saigon her whole life, with her mother, and three brothers. She loved her papaya tree and her brother loved his little chick. When the bombs started nearing Saigon, her mother decided the family had to flee the country. After a long period at sea, they had to live in a tent camp until they found an American sponsor to take them. The story tells about her journey and her transition to American life.
Oil painting by Kelly and Jayden Louis
The entire novel is written as poetry. It is well-written and very meaningful. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, anyone who likes poetry, and anyone who enjoys learning about other cultures. “Sometimes I would choose wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama.”
