"Growing up in a small town, my family and I embraced all the classic summer activities. Our 4th of July always started with the cheerful excitement of a parade. During my high school years, I had the special honor of riding the fire truck as a cheerleader, waving to friends and neighbors.
After the parade, we'd head back to our cozy lake house where an all-day family gathering awaited. The air was filled with laughter, the scent of homemade barbecue, and the playful sounds of kids running around. Everyone in the family would come over, bringing delicious dishes and heartwarming stories.
The highlight of the day was always the fireworks display over the lake. We'd all gather on the dock, watching the sky light up in a dazzling array of colors, reflecting beautifully on the water. These moments, surrounded by loved ones and the simple joys of small-town life, are what make my memories of Independence Day so special."

“It has become a neighborhood tradition to gather at a local farm for a Fourth of July celebration. Friends and families gather from miles around to enjoy the opportunity to see one another, visit, swap family joys and sadness, and talk about the local happenings. Set in a machine shop where tractors, combines, and other farm implements are routinely worked on and serviced, the large gathering place makes for a wonderful environment to spread out food that is carried in and meat from a whole hog that has been roasted for the past eight hours. At the end of the evening, excited children enjoy the yearly thrill of sparklers as the sun sets in the big, open sky to the west. The rural setting, home-baked pies and other delectable foods, and the chats with neighbors (that may live only a mile away but see each other once a year) all make one feel at home and focused on more of the things that truly matter in life – relationships, helping one another, forgetting about the hustle and bustle of life, and appreciating being fellow Americans.”

To me, the Fourth of July is a celebration of everything that America stands for…. the freedom of independence, of religion, of racial diversity, of whom to love, of voting for our elected leaders, and an environment conducive to creating opportunity. It is a time to celebrate those who bravely fought for those freedoms and who sacrificed everything to allow us to continue to be a free Nation.

Runyon Canyon is a fun hike tucked right into the middle of Hollywood. It's a great place to see celebrities, view the Hollywood Sign (in the distance), visit a hidden sculpture, and get a good hike in. In fact, Runyon will give you sweeping views from Catalina Island to the Santa Monica Mountains on a clear day. There are crowds here, so don't come expecting a pristine hiking experience. Runyon Canyon won a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, and is worth hiking at least once.
And talk about a dog friendly hike! There are well marked areas where you can have your dogs off-leash. Everywhere else, you just need to leash your dog. 90 of the park's 160 acres are marked for off-leash use, so there's plenty of space to let a dog roam free. Water fountains in the park provide some refreshment as well (bring your own bowl).
Recent renovations at Runyon Canyon even repaved surfaces with macadam, not asphalt, which is cooler on your dog's paws.

Since 1919, Balboa Island Ferry has provided continuous service for pooches, pet pawents, drivers and passengers in vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. Crossings approximate 800 feet. Via bridges, an alternate route is possible; but the traveling distance increases up to six miles. Many choose the ferry’s direct route and scenic crossing. Adults Tickets are $1.75 and dogs are free!
When you get to the island, dive into Crocker’s The Well Dressed Frank restaurant for fun food, a fabulous atmosphere and a super dog friendly experience.

The evidence is not only encouraging but it is opening the door to broader studies that are clearly supporting a scientific consensus. Can this be the way forward, and through, the insidious morass of canine illness and cancer prevention?
