Concept

Conceptual Coal Loader Gallery Space

The coal loader tunnel is like the “telescope. Only light and part of the view can be seen. In our daily life, usually, we can see one aspect of things, but there are many invisible parts. Vision is not only the fact but also can conceal the fact. This can be magnified by the coal loader tunnel space. Show parts of things, but when people are really in space, it would be more than they expect. In this way, the main concept is to extend the views to the experience and context.

Conceptual coal loader space

STREET & WHARF

STREET & PLATFORM

These diagrams show the step of thinking and exploration of the site and spaces. A wall with a grand staircase from the street level extended to the wharf connects different levels and contexts. The frame on the wall provides views. When walking along the elongated wall the progressive experience emphasized by the view changes. The arrangement of the platform reflects the space underneath.

Cutting through the linear access of the coal loader enables the diagonal view extended to water. Integrating geometry with the tunnel creates the entrance. The progression of spatial experience is emphasized by light, water, and sequence of spaces.

1:500 Site Model

The diagram shows the interaction between tunnels. As space sequence directed by geometrical embedding, visitors could explore the gallery space with views exchanges. Space is extended from one to another by visual sense. However, when people moving to another space, they would find it is different from what they had seen by visual extension. The visual sense is controlling by invisible space. Sunlight and water skylight also contributing to the progression of spatial experience. The concept idea behind this is to express vision can bring people imagination, which may deceive people. It is in every aspect of our lives, such as the appearance of people and the surface of buildings. I hope that the expression of vision through architecture is only one aspect of the perception of the world, and more importantly, personal experience and how they interact with architecture.

The physical model showed an abstract connection between street level and platform of the coal loader. The diagonal water views recall spaces and create different experiences for visitors. The square space on the platform enables activities and camping.

1:500 Site Model

The model shows the connection of wharf, street, and platform. A wall extends from the street to the wharf, which gives people a hint. At the same time, the holes in the wall also framed views of the site, People are curious about things that are half-hidden. So the holes in the wall frame the view of the site and draw attention.

The human situation is taking into consideration. How people use the space and progression of spatial experience are key factors of the design. Due to the light limitation and raw materials of the tunnel, it would be confused about walking through tunnels. Therefore, the introduction of the skylight and water skylight is a suggestion of space hierarchy. The different geometry cutting through tunnels is also suggesting the function. In the aspect of the function, to suit with artworks, different methods of skylight are applied. The axonometric diagrams above show activities of art foundation: cafĂŠ, sculpture display, painting & drawings, films, and performances.

Spatial Sequence Light and dark is the most important element of the art foundation. It can make people focus on the artworks as well as indicating the space sequences. Playing with the thin light is one of the main methods in this project.

The design aim is to express the space sequences and hierarchy by cooperating with the light, water, and views.

Buona Vista - Surroundings The site is located near the MRT Station Buona Vista in Singapore. It is at the intersection of the road. The main surrounding land use is affordable housing HDB with a few commercial buildings. The deep eaves of Holland Drive market & food court make the interior dark. Inside the market, the stuffy and lack of ventilation spoils the local tasty food. The surrounding views and residences are captured. The site is surrounded by the Holland Drive Market Food Center. (1) It is brick building with slope and pitch roof. Commercial buildings are opposite on the road. (2) The Star Villa shopping mall sanding out by its form, (3) which is also a community center where people can gather together. There are a number of HDB (Affordable housing) (4) around the site, therefore, the main number of users would be HDB community.

The tectonic expression of the roof is main represented by the roof ridges and eaves. The eaves stretching from the ground to the roof height, which both frame and limit the view. It also suggests the view of the water. The length of the eaves is defined by the sun angle of Singapore which is 67.5-900. The indirect light to the library is ensured by these eaves, which also enables enough daylight to the reading area. The roofed corridor with a curved wall creates a connection between the library and cafĂŠ.

Enclosed courtyard & Landscape

The gallery is designed by different degrees and types of light. The function is separated by containing the space within the space. In Sydney, the direct sunlight is in the north. Therefore, the gallery roof is designed towards to the south to avoid the direct sunlight, which could display and admire the artworks better. The studio for the artist as part of the gallery is semi-public, which could open to the public occasionally

Urban artifacts are related to space and the form of the city, which are also permanence beyond function. The terrace house in Millers Point is permanence residential housing with its function having gone through different alterations as it was public housing for the worker as government properties before. The linear sequence of terrace houses is tight and narrow, which defines the street grid system. Instead of separating the living of family members, integrating their lives to exchange their experience and communication across generations would bring different colors to their living. Meanwhile, the privacy of their living should be ensured. Thus, the design aim is to achieve the balance between public-private, and separate – together. The main public space in the terrace house is defined by living rooms. Allocating living room to each level to maintain the separate public space for different generations, while increasing the ground floor public space to have a “living together” sense.

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake (b 1938) is known for his technology-driven clothing designs. Miyake’s basic philosophy is imagination and the development of new technology in which to make clothing. Origami to the body, Issey Miyake creates body sculptures, combining influences from East and West into a total work. Influenced by the Japanese tradition of origami, he is interested in created pleated textiles using modern technology. Instead of following the lines of body, this textile creates a space between the cloth and body and interact with each other in an interesting way. One of his areas of practice is the Pleats Please collection which embodies most of the fundamental concepts of Issey Miyake - where the true value of design lies in its integration into the movement of garment and comfort of the wearer. These are reflected in the unique forms of the clothes he designed.
