Agriculture is now, as it’s always been, the basis of civilization. The 6 million farms of the United States form the basis of all other achievements of the American people, and are more fruitful than all their other resources. —President Theodore Roosevelt
Visitors can see a variety of experiential booths on farming, traditional food and culture, gardening and eateries, and exhibition booths related to urban agriculture, including the design of rooftop vegetable gardens, a home gardening contest, agriculture related photography, and wild flowers. In addition, a local food contest and urban agriculture workshop are also scheduled to be held during the exhibition.

During the last ten years, sustainable urban agriculture and urban food systems have rapidly moved from being a ‘fringe interest’ to attracting the attention of policymakers and planners in many cities, both in developing and developed countries. Feeding our urbanising world has become an imperative, especially in light of the climate emergency, and city actors are increasingly responding to the challenge.

In order to meet the global demand for food by 2050, The Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations estimates that food production needs to double. While access to new arable land can only increase this by five percent—and agricultural intensification and efficiencies are peaking—new technologies and solutions are required to help solve the problem. Cities should become more and more self-sustainable.

Starting a garden is a great big step toward a more self-reliant lifestyle. There’s nothing more rewarding than planting food and watching it grow from seed to harvest. It’s such a joy to walk out to the vegetable garden for a snack or dinner ingredients. Starting a garden can also drastically reduce your grocery bill.
