Friends and neighbors, As we wrap up another remarkable winter season, I want to extend my sincere appreciation for your continued support of our programs, events, and facilities. This year’s Winter on the Green celebration once again proved to be a community favorite, drawing families and neighbors together to enjoy festive activities, live entertainment, and winter cheer. Our fall programs were equally successful, highlighted by strong participation in seasonal activities and the close of a vibrant and robust fall sports season in our parks. By every measure, this has been one of our strongest seasons yet, and it is thanks to the partnership we share with you.

I am incredibly proud of our Parks and Recreation team, whose commitment, creativity, and dedication made these achievements possible. From maintaining our parks at the highest standards to planning innovative and inclusive programs, our staff continues to exceed expectations. Their excellent work was recognized this year by the Virginia Recreation and Park Society through several distinguished honors, including Best New Facility, Best New Inclusion Initiative, and Most Creative Marketing Strategy. We were one of only seven localities across the state recognized in three or more award categories. These awards reflect not only the professionalism of our team, but also the strong community engagement that inspires us to keep raising the bar.

As we look ahead, we are excited to build on this momentum. In the coming year, we will continue expanding partnerships, exploring new opportunities to enhance our parks, and developing unique and engaging programmatic offerings that reflect the needs and interests of our residents. Your participation, feedback, and enthusiasm fuel our vision for an even brighter future. Your Community Your Involvement This fall, our community came together in a big way through Hanover Helps beautification efforts. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves across parks throughout the county. They cleaned trails, refreshed landscapes, and helped spruce up the dog park. In addition to hands-on park projects, volunteers supported a wide range of activities, programs, and special events, contributing their talents and enthusiasm to enhance experiences for the community.

Hanover County's Department of Community Resources will be hosting Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), part of a nationwide effort to engage youth aged 5-25 in volunteerism that benefits their community.

These volunteers contributed hundreds of hours boosting park pride, elevating events, and helping Parks & Recreation shine brighter than ever. Their energy makes all the difference, and we’re so grateful for everyone who stepped up to make Hanover an even better place to live, play, and explore.

Hanover Helps

Do you love nature and want to make a difference in your community? Volunteer to help keep our local parks clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone to enjoy! We’re looking for you to assist with tasks including picking up litter, raking leaves, planting flowers, maintaining trails, and more. Your time and effort will have a lasting impact. All tools and supplies will be provided - just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get a little dirty!

We're looking for passionate volunteers to help make our community events a smashing success and programs something to remember for our participants! From sensory activities and support for those with special needs to extra hands playing games and leading crafts, volunteers keep the fun going! Look for the “volunteers needed” icon.

Leaders-in-Training

Ready to level up your summer? Our Leaders in Training (LIT) program gives teens ages 13–15 the chance to team up with camp counselors to bring our summer camps to life. Build leadership skills, learn what it takes to run games and activities, and make a big impact for younger campers, while having plenty of fun yourself. Includes training June 1 - June 5.

Projects will be released mid-March.

Hanover Museum of History & Culture

Dedicated to preserving and sharing Hanover County’s diverse history, the Hanover Museum of History and Culture highlights well-researched narratives and cultural perspectives, respecting the lives and legacies that have shaped the county. Our exhibitions are designed in partnership with community members and offer a closer look at the remarkable Hanover events, stories, and historical traditions in modern-day contexts.

Timeline 1776: Hanover’s Role in the Revolution

The year 1776 stands as a defining moment in the American story—a time of rebellion, declaration, and the reimagining of government and liberty.

This exhibit invites you to consider Hanover’s place within that pivotal year, tracing how the decisions of the Continental Congress and the unfolding events of the War of Independence reverberated through Virginia and Hanover County. The choices and challenges not only impacted local communities but also helped lay the foundation for a new nation.

Product of Hanover Hanover County’s agricultural history spans more than three centuries of continuous farming traditions. Tobacco dominated the local economy for generations and shaped much of the county’s culture and heritage. During the twentieth century, many farms diversified, shifting from tobacco to truck farming.

Local growers supplied nearby markets with fresh vegetables.

Today, Hanover tomatoes are widely recognized for their exceptional flavor and quality. Agriculture remains a central part of Hanover County’s economy and continues to sustain and connect the community.

Born to Martha Ann Berkley and Washington Fields, both enslaved in Virginia, George was raised on a plantation in Hanover Courthouse during the final years of American slavery.

Montpelier Recreation Center & Library

The Montpelier Recreation Center and Library is the first facility of its kind in Hanover, placing library services and recreation programs under one roof. The 20,000 sf facility includes a fullservice library, full-size gymnasium, stage, classroom, community meeting space, and study rooms.

Gymnasium

The gymnasium at the Montpelier Recreation Center and Library is designed to support a wide range of programs and activities. The gymnasium will be available for drop-in play while not in use for scheduled programs. Gymnasium programs are scheduled to allow specific sports and other activities full use of the space.

A Rec Pass will be required for access to gymnasium programs and drop-in play. Rec Passes are available free of charge to Hanover County residents only and must be renewed annually.

Please note that children under the age of 16 years must be supervised by an adult unless: age 14 - 15 with a parent-approved waiver participating in a Hanover Parks and Recreation supervised program Hanover County residents can sign up for a Rec Pass online at www.hanoverparksrec.com or at the front desk.

Gymnasium Programs Open Gym Times

When there are no gym programs scheduled, drop-in basketball and pickleball are available to Rec Pass holders up to 30 minutes prior to the next scheduled gym program.

Up to one pickleball net will be set up during Open Gym times. The other half of the gym will remain open for basketball and free play. Due to time and staff requirements, the volleyball net system will not be set up for drop-in play.

Intermediate Pickleball

by Hanover County Parks and Recreation. When not supporting a scheduled program, the classroom is also available for community use.

Hanover County Parks and Recreation provides both adaptive recreation opportunities and inclusion services for persons with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Programs offered under the Adaptive & Therapeutic Recreation category are designed specifically for persons with disabilities, featuring activities that are appropriate for physical and cognitive ability levels. Inclusion services allow persons with disabilities the opportunity to participate in all programs through accommodation. Church of the Redeemer

Aktion Club is the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 7,200 members in over 400 clubs worldwide. The Ashalnd Kiwanis club, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor.

Aktion Club is open to any disability self-advocate age 18 or older. Members will participate in service projects and show leadership in their community.

In partnership with The Arc of Hanover Club, Aktion Club will take place on the second Monday of each month at The Arc of Hanover.

Youth Therapeutic Horseback Riding Equine-assisted therapy classes are offered to individuals with some cognitive, physical, or emotional disabilities.

Get ready to jump into the ultimate Frozen Frenzy outdoor adventure! Start the day with miniindividual challenges, then dive into larger group games, including fast-paced laser tag rounds where you and your team strategize and compete for points.

In between, enjoy arts and crafts, hot cocoa, and a silent disco. Every participant is randomly assigned one of four team colors, which becomes your crew for earning points, cheering each other on, and chasing ultimate Frozen Frenzy bragging rights!

Hanover County Parks and Recreation offers a wide range of athletic facilities to support both youth and adult athletic programs. All organized practices, games, or training events require an Athletic Facility Use Permit. This includes local leagues, scholastic events, tournaments, sports camps, and other similar activities. To start the reservation process, organizations should first complete an Athletic Facility Use Permit application. Completed applications should be submitted to athletics@hanovercounty.gov.

Picnic shelters can be reserved online or in-person at the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Administrative Office. A completed reservation form and payment must be submitted prior to use of the shelter.

Reservations may be made up to a year in advance. Please note that picnic shelter reservations do not include exclusive use of playgrounds, courts, fields, or other adjacent amenities.
