InJanuary2026,HanoverCountyexperiencedawinterweathereventthat createdextraordinaryconditions,asextendedfreezingtemperaturescreated widespreadicingacrossroadways,parkinglots,sidewalks,andpublicfacilities Thick,persistenticepresentedsignificantsafetychallengesandrequired extensiveefforttorestoresafeaccesstocountybuildings

Duringthistime,ourParkServicesteamdemonstratedremarkablededication, workinglonghoursformorethantwoweekstoclearandtreataffectedareas. Crewsoperatedequipment,manuallybrokeandremovedice,andapplied sandandsalttoparkinglotsandwalkwaysManyofthesetasksrequired reportingoutsideofnormalworkhourssothatequipmentandiceremoval workcouldbeconductedsafelywhenvehicularandpedestriantrafficwas minimal.

Theworkwasphysicallydemandingandperformedinsub-freezing temperatures,yetstaffremainedfocusedanddeterminedTheircreativityand resourcefulnesswereessentialinkeepingequipmentfunctioningandsecuring materialswhensuppliesbecamelimited.

VAXCShowcase2025atPoleGreenPark

HanoverCountyParksandRecreationplayedacentralroleinthesuccessofthe2025VirginiaXC Showcase,whichwasrecentlyhonoredastheEventImpactoftheYearrecipientattheRVASports Awards,presentedbytheRichmondRegionTourismFoundation.TheShowcase,heldannuallyatPole GreenPark,hasgrownintooneofthelargestcross-countrymeetsheldintheregion.In2025,theevent welcomedmorethan13,000visitors,includingover5,000highschoolathletesrepresenting16states, generatingasignificanttourismimpactforHanoverCountyandtheRichmondRegion.

Therecognitionreflectstheextensiveplanning,coordination,andon-sitesupportprovidedbyHanover CountyParksandRecreationstaffandraceorganizers.Theseeffortsensuretheeventoperates smoothlyandprovidesahighqualityexperienceforathletes,coaches,andspectators.
