In2025,wearemakingsignificantinvestmentsinourparksand recreationfacilitiesthatwillenhancetheoverallexperienceforourcommunity.Ongoing projectssuchasparkinglotpaving,athleticfieldimprovements,andplayground replacementsensuresafer,moreaccessiblespacesforalltoenjoy.Wearealsointhe processofconstructingnewrestroomsandaddingamenitieslikepickleballcourtsand pavedwalkingtrailsinseverallocations.Theseimprovementsreflectourcommitmentto promotingactivelifestylesandoverallhealthinthecommunity.
Inadditiontotheseexcitingupgrades,weareeagerlyanticipatingthereturnofsomeof HanoverCounty'smostbelovedprogramsandevents.TheHanoverTomatoFestivaltakes overPoleGreenParkinJulywithawiderangeofvendors,activities,andentertainment! Additionally,weareproudtooffermorethan100summercampsessionsthisyear, includingbothfull-dayandhalf-dayoptions,andmorethan60uniquespecialinterest classes.Theseeventsandprogramsprovideawonderfulopportunityforfamiliesand friendstocometogetherandsupportourvibrantcommunity.

In2022,theBrownGrovecommunity achievedrecognitionastheBrownGrove RuralHistoricDistrict,officiallydesignatedas ahistoricallyAfricanAmericancommunity ontheVirginiaregistryandacknowledged asaVirginialandmark.Thefollowingyear, thisdistrictwasaddedtotheNational RegisterofHistoricPlaces.
TheHanoverMuseumofHistory&Culture,in partnershipwiththeBrownGrove PreservationGroup,GeorgeMason University'sJohnMitchellJr.Program,and OperationUnderstanding,isdocumenting thisremarkablehistorythroughtheexhibit titledTapestryofResilience:AJourney ThroughtheBrownGroveExperience.
Theexhibitionwillbeondisplaythrough June21,2025.

InconjunctionwithHistory&Hops1775,we areproudtosharethejourneyofalcohol distributioninthestateofVirginiawiththecommunity.Virginians imbibedtheirlastlegaldrinkonHalloweennightin1916—morethan threeyearsbeforenationalprohibitionwasenacted.Newspapers reportedbacchanalianscenesintheOldDominion’scitiesas“wets” drankupandboughtoutthestockofsaloonsandbars.Mostofthe state’sliquor,beer,andwineproducersquietlyshutdown.Many farmersworriedthatamajorpartoftheirlivelihoodfromcornand fruithaddisappearedovernight,whilesupportersofprohibition exultedinthepromiseofamorallyupright“DryVirginia.”
TheexhibitionwillbeondisplayfromMarch21throughAugust2,2025.
GiveMeLiberty:Virginia&TheForgingofaNationwasproducedin partnershipbytheJamestown-YorktownFoundationandtheVirginia MuseumofHistory&Culture.ItispresentedbyVirginia's250th Commission
ThisexhibitionwillhighlighttheessentialVirginiapeople,events,and sitesthathelpedbringlibertyanddemocracytothenation. TheHanoverMuseumofHistoryandCultureisexcitedtohostthe premiumtravelingexhibition,“GivemeLiberty:Virginiaandthe ForgingofaNation.”TheexhibitionwillexploreuniqueVirginiapeople, eventsandsitesincommemorationofthesigningoftheDeclaration ofIndependence.

Afterhearingaboutaninspiringlife-savingeventthatoccurredatPoleGreen Park,SamZeidanknewthatheneededtogetinvolved.TheHanoverresident andbusinessmanmadeagenerousdonationof$50,000tosupportthe purchaseandinstallationoftenAEDunitsthatwillbeinstalledinCountyparks. AED’s,orautomatedexternaldefibrillators,provideanelectricalshocktothe hearttore-establishanormalrhythmduringcardiacemergencies.Scanthe codebelowtolearnmoreaboutthisinspiringstoryandtheAEDinstallation project.
NewPlaygroundsPlannedforPoleGreen andPoorFarmParks
PoleGreenParkandPoorFarmParkhavetwoofthebusiest playgroundsintheCounty.It’snosurprisethattheexistingequipment isshowingsignsofwearandarenowdueforreplacement.Beginning inMay2025,thelargeplayspacesateachparkwillbecompletely renovated.Thenewplaysystemsincludeawiderangeoffeatures thatwillimprovesafety,accessibility,andtheoverallplayexperience basedonfeedbackgatheredfromcommunitysurveys.Someofthe notablefeaturesincludepoured-in-placerubbersurfacing, wheelchairaccess,expandedswings,andadditionalshade.Pole Green’snewequipmentwillincludetheregion’sonlyeight-footwide MightyDescentslideandPoorFarmboastscreativeplayelements likechickens,strawbales,andatractorintegratedintotheplay space.Staytunedforannouncementsonthegrandopeningforthese twonewplayspaces.

Ifyou’vevisitedanyoftheCounty’slargeparksrecently,youmayhavenoticed arangeofconstructionactivitiestakingplace.Avarietyofathleticfieldprojects areunderwayorplannedforthenearfutureatPoleGreenPark,PoorFarmPark, andCourthousePark.Thesethreeparkssupportthousandsofyouthandadult athleteseachweekduringthespringandfallseasons.Someofthe improvementsincludenewscoreboardsandgoalpostsforfootballfields,new fencingatallbaseballdiamonds,irrigationimprovements,andpavingof parkinglots.Newbenchesandspectatorbleachersarealsobeinginstalledat severalfacilities.
PickleballCourtExpansionPlanned
PickleballcontinuestoreignasAmerica’sfastest-growingsport.Thedemand foraddedcourtspaceinHanoverCountyisapparentandHanoverCounty ParksandRecreationwillpursuethecreationof18additionalcourts,spread acrossseveralparksites,overthenexttwoyears.TheCountyhasfourpublic courtsavailableatPoleGreenParkandthreeindoorcourtsaremadeavailable atspecifictimesattheMontpelierRecreationCenterandLibrary.Thenew courtswilleasecrowdingatexistingsitesandallowmorepeopletoenjoythe infectioussport.Countyofficialsarefinalizingsiteengineeringforthenew courtsinpreparationforseekinganamendmenttoeachpark’sConditionalUse Permit.Staytunedforupdatesonthisexcitingproject!
ParkServicesHarnessesthePowerof Robotics
ThenewestmemberoftheParkServicesteamdoesn’tneedalunchbreak, doesn’thavelegs,andwillreceivenopaycheck.TheParkServicesteamis implementingaroboticfieldpaintertosaveontimeandmaterials.TheTurf TankIIroboticfieldpainterutilizesGPStechnologyandhastheabilitytopaint perfectlystraightfieldlineswhileusing50%lesspaintthantraditionalmethods. TheParkServicesteamwillworkwithHanover-basedathleticorganizationsto doinitialfieldlayouts,allowingfieldstobemarkedperfectlytostarttheseason. Athleticorganizationswillthenmaintainthoseoriginallinesthroughoutthe season.TheTurfTankIIcanpaintafull-sizesoccerfieldinabout28minutesand afull-sizefootballfieldwithyardagenumbersandhashmarksinabout3.5 hours.
