A message from the Director It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone with the start of school, fall sports, and some of our favorite holiday traditions right around the corner! As we reflect on the past several months, we are grateful for another season filled with growth, connection, and unforgettable experiences. Together, we launched exciting new events, celebrated significant project milestones, and welcomed thousands of residents to our parks, programs, and facilities, and we couldn’t have done it without our community. As we turn the page to a new season, we are excited to bring you another recreation guide filled with opportunities to stay active, learn something new, and connect with family, friends, and neighbors. We invite you to celebrate fall with us at SpookyFUN Fest, where families can enjoy an evening of costumes, games, entertainment, and Halloween fun. As the holiday season approaches, we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Winter on the Green, a community tradition that brings the spirit of the season to life. These signature events, along with the many programs and activities offered throughout the year, reflect our commitment to providing exceptional recreational experiences for residents of all ages and abilities. Behind every successful program, special event, and community gathering is a dedicated team of professionals who are passionate about serving our residents. I want to sincerely thank our Parks and Recreation staff for their unwavering commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm. Their hard work, along with the support of our volunteers, instructors, community partners, sponsors, and County leaders, makes it possible to deliver the high-quality services our community has come to expect. On behalf of the entire Parks and Recreation team, thank you for your continued support and engagement. We look forward to seeing you in our parks, at our events, and in our programs as we continue building a healthy, active, and connected community together.

BTS: Bringing a Concert Series to Life After hearing considerable community interest in events and live music during the 2035 Parks and Recreation Master Plan process, the department launched the Sounds at Sunset Concert Series designed to bring live music to greenspaces across Hanover County. But long before the first note is played, months of planning are already underway. It starts with selecting the right site. Staff evaluates parking, accessibility, event space, utilities, and, importantly whether the 17,000-pound mobile stage can safely access and be positioned on firm, level ground with adequate clearance. Next comes the entertainment. Our Community Events staff works well in advance—sometimes nearly a year—to secure a diverse lineup of talented local and regional artists. The goal is to balance returning favorites with new performers and musical styles that offer something for everyone. Behind the scenes, event logistics are just as important. Staff coordinate food and beverage vendors; prepare and transport generators, lighting, tents, and other event equipment; and produce stage banners, directional signs, and other event signage in-house. Every item must be designed, printed, packed, delivered, installed, and ultimately removed after the event. The result may look effortless from the audience, but each concert represents months of coordination, creativity and teamwork. Every detail helps bring the concert experience to life, creating opportunities for visitors to connect with neighbors and build a stronger sense of community in Hanover County.
