Each year, the Hanover chamber recognizes outstanding local businesses, organizations and educators at the Business Awards Ceremony. This year's event, presented by DOCEO Office Solutions and APPI Energy, will recognize member anniversaries as well as the Small Business of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, and Positive Action Award. Area educators will also be recognized with the Educator of the Year awards. Members are welcome to nominate themselves, a colleague, or another deserving business for any of the awards. New HR Seminar Series: Tools to Address HR Issues
by Leslie Elsner Bell, Executive Director, Granite HR Consulting, LLC You have finally hired someone for that hard-to-fill job but that doesn’t end your employment woes. Tardiness, poor quality work, disruptive behavior, and not performing to your company’s standards have cropped up. If you think ignoring these and other employee issues will make them go away, you are sadly mistaken. As we discussed in our August article, “Recruiting and Interviewing for Hiring Managers,” there is a labor shortage in many skilled positions and unemployment is at a record low, so keeping employees is vital. Of course, employee issues can happen at any stage in the employment relationship, from initial hire to long-time worker. No matter when the trouble occurs, an employer must take swift and decisive action because a belief that management is avoiding a problem or giving preferential treatment to an employee can damage an organization’s credibility. Inaction also erodes employees’ trust in management, fractures teams, and can lead to charges of unlawful discrimination.
Before resorting to firing an employee, managers should have a toolbox of options to address the problems, including Coaching, Counseling and Disciplinary Action (the topic of our Oct. 10 HR Seminar). In addition, a company should clearly define the expectations of the job with resources such as a job description and clearly define the workplace culture through tools such as a current employee handbook. Managers should use coaching to promote self-awareness and explain performance expectations. Done well, a manager can clarify work responsibilities, reinforce positive behaviors, and address any performance deficiencies. This process precedes any kind of disciplinary action, possibly preventing the loss of an employee who was so difficult to find in the first place. To understand how to improve performance and stem the loss of employees, plan to attend the second of three HR seminars on Tools to Address HR Issues on October 10 from noon to 1:30 p.m. to learn more about how to implement Coaching, Counseling, and Disciplinary Action techniques. The Corporate Challenge is comprised of a full day of fun, team-building activities and friendly competition. This year's event will feature two tracks, Competitive and Recreational, for participants of any ability level!
TEAM REGISTRATION Think your team will be the one to knock off last year's winners from Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc. and Clark's NA and take home the traveling trophy? Register now!
Track 1 (intense) will be held at Adams-York Sports Performance, and will feature obstacle courses, tug of war, and more 'high energy' competitions. This course will begin at 8 a.m. Teams are comprised of six participants; each team MUST include two females.
Challengers of any age, profession and ability level are encouraged to participate, and teams are invited to create a unique name that sets them apart from the pack. Businesses and organizations may combine to form a team.
Track 2 (recreational) will also be held at AdamsYork Sports Performance. Teams are comprised of 4 participants, and events will begin at 12 noon.

Cross Keys Hosts Breakfast of Champions 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford
Cross Keys Village welcomes old and new friends in the fields of aging services, health care, nonprofits and local business to a tasty breakfast and a time of fellowship and networking in their Nicarry Meetinghouse (near the Route-30 entrance to the campus). This gathering will be the occasion to introduce the local rollout of Dementia Friendly America, a national network of communities, businesses and individuals that are equipped to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. Steering committee members, including dementia expert Jennifer Holcomb, will explain how dementia-friendly communities foster the ability for people with dementia to remain engaged in their own community.

ELSNER ANNOUNCES NEW HIRE AND PROMOTIONS ELSNER recently hired Lynneah Smith as HR manager and promoted both Gordon Laabs and Jay Roth to directorlevel positions. Smith was named as HR Manager. Smith comes to ELSNER with experience as a recruiter at the Brethren Home Community and as an Account Executive at Manpower. Her philosophy includes being dedicated to improving organizational leadership and teamwork through a strong professional emphasis on excellent communication and outstanding customer service.
Gordon Laabs was promoted to Director of Strategic Connectivity, notably overseeing Customer Service and the ELSNER IIoT Program. Jay Roth was promoted to Director of Sales. With 23 years of experience in a wide range of roles at ELSNER, Roth and his sales team have been instrumental in the company's recent growth.
C.S. DAVIDSON, INC. ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP CHANGE The Board of Directors at C.S. Davidson, Inc. has announced that Christopher W. Toms, P.E. will serve as the company’s next Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective July 1, 2018. As COO of C.S. Davidson, Toms will continue to build upon the firm’s longstanding commitment to civil engineering excellence by providing strategic and tactical leadership for the Firm. In this role, he will serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Firm. VISITING ANGELS CEO NAMED 2018 WOMEN OF INFLUENCE Visiting Angels of York, Hanover and Lancaster is pleased to announce that Susan J. Heinle, RN, CEO and owner, has been named an award recipient of the 2018 Women of Influence awards. Heinle was selected as one of the top nominees by the judges for her leadership and achievements within Visiting Angels, as well as her contributions to the community. Heinle started Visiting Angels, a non-medical homecare company serving older adults, over 15 years ago. Through her involvement in the York County Office of Aging and several of their committees, Heinle helped identify areas where the county was lacking in resources for older adults especially those with limited financial resources. She has been an advocate for expanding services to seniors, working with Protective Services during critical family situations and fought for quality services for older adults.

Fall is on its way, and we’re so excited to announce that our Fall Sip & Stroll date is Saturday, October 13! This signature Main Street event has grown so much over the years and we are so excited to spend another fantastic fall evening with you in Downtown Hanover! Our businesses are partnering with local breweries and wineries to provide some of the tastiest sips for ticket holders. Kick the day off with the Homebrew Competition (free to sip) and then join us from 1 p.m.- 6 p.m. for the ticketed event, Sip & Stroll. Tickets go on sale September 13. Get yours before they’re gone!
Hometown Heroes
Join us for 2nd Saturday in November as we honor our local service men and women in downtown Hanover. November 11 will be a day of military vehicles, fun food, and information about how to support those who have served our country. Streetscape Public Meeting
Mark your calendars for the September public meeting for the Streetscape Downtown Design and Beautification Project! This meeting will take place on September 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the Guthrie Memorial Library. Consultants from Simone Collins will present their findings and give us ideas for transforming our downtown streetscape. Please join us!
Christmas is Coming!
We are asking for your donation to support the Christmas activities in Hanover, including maintenance of the new Santa's Cabin! Visiting 'the Cabin', our historically traditional Hanover landmark, has been a cherished holiday activity for 80 years. As hard as it was to admit, our beloved Santa's Cabin was in a state of great disrepair, and last year it welcomed its last visitors. We have received an outpouring of support to keep this tradition alive and build a new Santa Cabin that will last another 80 years! Thanks to a generous donation from the Eagles Club, we are excited to have a new cabin for this year but are looking to now raise funds to decorate and maintain the cabin year after year. We need your help to maintain the new cabin, pay for the Christmas decorations hung on the lights throughout town, and bring new and exciting holiday events to Hanover!
The Borough of Hanover, Hanover's Christmas Committee, and Main Street Hanover and its partners, are raising funds to build the Christmas activities and Cabin maintenance fund in Hanover. No tax-payer money will be used in the building of this cabin, the decorating of the town, or the Christmas activities. It is up to our community to support this effort. We are looking to our local business community to help us afford such great expenses. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help to keep our community traditions alive this Christmas! If you are unable to make a contribution, we invite you to participate in other ways, like volunteering at the cabin, participating in the parade, or joining the planning effort.
