A Letter from Our President, Gary Laird 2020 was a year like no other. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chamber experienced a busy and fulfilling start, thanks to the support from our members and the community. When the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, the Chamber stepped up to take care of members. We created a landing page on our website to disseminate information to the community. We also started sharing information from the U.S. and PA Chambers via weekly email updates, created a group on Facebook for businesses to share information with community members, met with legislators weekly to get on top of the state’s plans, and hosted webinars and town halls to keep our members connected and well-informed. We also supported members and the community through the reopening “green phase” by creating a reopening guide and providing access to valuable resources. To date, we continue to provide valuable and meaningful updates on a weekly basis. On August 30, we closed out the most challenging fiscal year in my 19-year tenure with the Chamber. Moving into the new year, our organization is here to be your voice, sustain business, and be a part of a robust recovery plan. We hope to reestablish our social networking opportunities as soon as it is safe to do so, and we recently started planning our large events for next summer with some new and exciting twists that will be revealed soon. The Chamber’s core business will continue to focus on economic development, financial sustainability, and brand loyalty as established in its 2019-2021 strategic plan (visit the chamber’s website for the plan).
Under economic development, creating a talent pipeline to address workforce needs and downtown revitalization will continue to be key priorities. It is important that we focus on financial growth and sustainability for the Chamber. We continue to accomplish this by transitioning to our value-based dues structure. To date, we have moved approximately 140 of our 450 members to this new dues schedule. It has been well received and provides chamber staff the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with members. This process is very valuable as it gives us a much better understanding of how we can best serve the needs of members. Brand loyalty is articulating the Chamber’s value and impact to the member base and the community. We will continue to engage senior leaders to inform them on the progress of our strategic initiatives. Promoting the Discover Hanover brand through various media channels will continue to benefit local business and the greater Hanover community. There is still uncertainty regarding the timing of our recovery from COVID-19, but we are determined that we will emerge from this experience as a much stronger organization. Our financial position is strong, our board leadership is strong, and our experienced staff is prepared to move the organization forward to best serve our members and the community. Thank you for your support!

Byrnes Health Education Center Celebrates 25 Years of Inspiration
H.A.R.T Center Breaks Ground on New Ancillary Building
Since 1995, teams at the Byrnes Health Education Center have been dedicated to educating and inspiring people of all ages to make healthy choices. Over these 25 years, their team has delivered over 7.5 million health education lessons to children, young adults, and their parents.
The H.A.R.T. Center in New Oxford recently celebrated their groundbreaking for a new ancillary building. The building, which is located on the H.A.R.T. Center campus, was funded through the generosity of several foundations, organizations and businesses in the local community.
The Center reaches communities stretching throughout South Central Pennsylvania and to participants thousands of miles away via internet. In the midst of a global public health pandemic overlaid with existing, long-term health needs and challenges, their mission is as relevant and vital today as it was decades ago.
The H.A.R.T. Center serves 130 Adams and Western York County Adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities. This building will allow the growth of supporting programs, improve operational efficiency and now, in these most challenging times, assist with maintaining social distancing requirements. Programs include fulfilling manufacturing contracts where individuals are taught vocational skills, providing assistance to individuals in finding competitive employment, providing individuals onsite training and community volunteer efforts.
While unable to host their 25th Birthday celebrations now, the Byrnes Health Education Center looks forward to the moment when conditions will allow for a physical gathering to commemorate the Center’s first quarter century of delivering preventive health curriculum. The Center would love to hear from you and, with your permission, to share some of your stories. As we all look forward to future, in-person celebrations, the Byrnes Health Education Center hopes to collect a treasure of memories that only you hold. Please send to birthday@byrneshec.org.
The H.A.R.T. Center truly empowers individuals with disabilities in personal and vocational growth and is an excellent option for manufacturing fulfillment and staff augmentation. Please visit www.hartcenterpa.com or call (717) 624-4323 for a tour or additional information.

Hanover Library Robotics Team Sets ACNB Recognized as One of Top 50 High Goals for New Season Fastest Growing Companies ACNB Corporation was recently named by Central Penn Business Journal to its 24th annual list of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies in Central Pennsylvania for 2020. This is the third consecutive year ACNB Corporation has achieved this recognition, ranking #28 in 2020.
The Guthrie Geeks, the most senior of the three Guthrie Library youth robotics teams, has kicked off the 2020-2021 competition season following FIRST’s global announcement of this year’s “Ultimate Goal” challenge and game rules. While COVID restrictions compel the team to meet away from the library, the core work of leveraging project management, teamwork and robotics knowledge to solve game challenges remains the same. Each annual FIRST challenge combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science. This year’s game requires teams to build an original robot that operates autonomously and under remote control to maneuver field equipment, collect ring-shaped game pieces, and launch the pieces at field targets to score points. Building off a highly successful inaugural 2019-2020 season, the Guthrie Geeks have identified three specific objectives to increase their robotics and STEM knowledge. Those objectives are: • More data-driven decision methods for testing; • Utilize full text-based Java programming for greater control; • Incorporate odometry sensors for greater precision.
“What began as a savings institution with one location on Lincoln Square in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1857 has become a vibrant and successful community banking organization with 33 community banking offices and three loan offices in 2020. ACNB Corporation’s growth is the direct result of the commitment and hard work of many in our organization, as well as reinforces the success of our business model, vision, and core values. We are, once again, truly honored to be recognized for our achievements and excited about the positive momentum ACNB Corporation continues to experience in our local markets through our subsidiaries of ACNB Bank and Russell Insurance Group, Inc.,” said James P. Helt, ACNB Corporation President & Chief Executive Officer. “ACNB Corporation has a long history of commitment to the communities shared with its employees, customers and shareholders,” he continued. “In gratitude, we recognize those who contribute to ACNB Corporation’s vision and growth as a financial services provider focused on building relationships and finding solutions.” In order to be eligible for consideration in this ranking for 2020, companies were required to show revenue of at least $500,000 in each of the fiscal years ending 2017, 2018 and 2019, as well as revenue growth in 2019, as compared to 2017. Companies headquartered in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry or York County were eligible for nomination.
The Guthrie Geeks need financial and in-kind support to continue offering local youth access to STEM experience in a positive, yet competitive environment. To learn more contact Coach Katie Morton at hanover.ftc.club@gmail.com.
Ox Industries Restarts White Pigeon Paper Mill Ox Industries has successfully restarted the White Pigeon Paper Mill after it is was closed for almost three months. Ox acquired the mill from Graphic Packaging in June and has since converted the mill from clay coated recycled paperboard (CRB) to high strength uncoated recycled paperboard (URB). “This is a significant opportunity for OX and the local community. Our team members have worked extremely hard to bring this facility back to life with a new purpose that ensures environmental stewardship and a solid platform for growth. The unique characteristics of this paper machine give us opportunities to expand our vertically integrated platform of producing green 100% recycled paper products,” said Ox Industries CEO Kevin Hayward. The White Pigeon Mill will add 80,000 tons of URB capacity to Ox’s current mill system. Additional upgrades are being planned to increase the output and overall facility of the White Pigeon Mill over the next two years.

Christmas 2020 The Hanover Christmas Committee, a Main Street Hanover effort, is happy to announce the following plans for the 2020 Christmas season. We are excited to be able to present the full 2020 dates of Santa’s Cabin, with in-person visits with Santa on the square for our 79th consecutive year. Image360 has graciously provided a sheet of plexi-glass that we will be installing to create a barrier between the cabin visitors and Santa. We are finalizing the layout of how this will look and can’t wait to share with you when it’s finished. As you’ll see in the coming days, we have prepared visitor guidelines to follow the mandates in place in Pennsylvania. For example, masks must be worn by all who visit the cabin, including those who are waiting in line outside the cabin. We will have painted stencils to mark a line that can accommodate visitor groups that will be spread six feet apart. These marks will prompt visitors to stand in the designated spaces until they reach the cabin. When visitors arrive, they’ll be kept at a distance until their turn to enter. We will also have a volunteer temperature log to manage our volunteer’s safely. Candy canes and chips provided to each visiting child will be pre-packed into bags that will be handed to each child after their visit. Santa’s letters and any in person letters will be collected, but no items will be passed between visitors and Santa. We will also have hand sanitizer stations, thanks to the Borough of Hanover’s Public Works Dept., and a sanitation plan for the cabin to provide a clean cabin for the visitors. These are just a few of the ways we will be managing the health and safety of our volunteers, Santa, and the community this year at Santa’s Cabin. More detailed guidelines, how-to visit videos, and additional tips for your visit will be available on our website in the coming weeks.
We understand that any changes to the infection rates in Hanover can impact our ability to keep the cabin open, so we are prompting the community to follow our website and social media channels to check the cabin’s hours before visiting. We have created a cabin disclaimer as well ensuring that the community is aware that this plan, as announced in this newsletter, is on a day-by-day basis. Unfortunately, we are also announcing that the Holiday Parade, traditionally held on Black Friday, and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony held on Small Business Saturday will be cancelled. We are looking forward to sharing a virtual experience with you in partnership with community media. Our Christmas Committee has been working overtime to plan for a variety of virtual events and online activities that we will announce in the coming days. Our coloring page by local artist Bobbi Becker is in the works and will still be available to color this year. A bike decorating and holiday home decorating contest will be announced, which we think you will love! A few more fun and festive surprise activities are almost ready to share, so please, if you don’t already, follow our social media channels to ensure you see all the great things we hope you’ll participate in this year. Main Street Hanover’s downtown businesses are excited to welcome you for your holiday shopping needs as well! On December 12 we will be hosting a Holiday Stroll and will launch the 2020 Christmas Tree Wars after Thanksgiving. So please remember to shop small this holiday season and support local when visiting Santa’s Cabin this year. We want to say a big thank you to everyone for their help in preparing for the upcoming holiday season. We could not accomplish all that we are doing this year without the dedicated committee of volunteers and Main Street Hanover staff. If you have any questions or comments regarding this article, please reach out to Main Street Hanover’s Executive Director, Justine Trucksess, at jtrucksess@mainstreethanover.org or (717) 637-6130 x101.
