Summer is always busy at the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. With signature events including the Annual Golf Outing, Snack Town Brewfest, and the Hanover Dutch Festival, there are a variety of opportunities for members to get involved with the chamber and community.

The 51st Annual Golf Outing is scheduled for Thursday, June 4. Like last year, golfers will enjoy a morning outing. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Chamber Seeks Event Planning Intern for the Spring 2020 Semestser Duties include: • Supporting the Director of Membership & Events with production schedules • Contacting vendors and sponsors • Coordinating with the host venue • Managing event database • Registering event attendees

The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking a paid event planning intern for the spring 2020 semester.

The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce holds three large events that take place throughout the summer, including a golf outing, a beer festival, and a street festival drawing 10,000+ attendees. This internship will require 16-24 hours per week and will run May through July.

Requirements/qualifications: • High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program to receive credit • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) • Must be 18 years of age • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Self-directed and able to work without supervision • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas For more information on the events, visit our website at www.hanoverchamber.com.

HR Seminar: Top 10 Employee Handbook Topics

By Leslie Elsner Bell, Senior Human Resources Consultant, Elsner Bell & Associates, LLC If it has been more than a year since your business has reviewed its Employee Handbook, it’s time to see whether your day-to-day business practices have deviated from your actual written policies. The start of the year also brings with it ever-changing regulations, at the federal, state, and local level, that need to be addressed. Businesses with locations in multiple states have the added burden to understand any new requirements in order to stay compliant.

Of course, there are employment policies in the news daily — think “#MeToo.” If you have not recently updated your Sexual Harassment/Workplace Harassment policy in the recent past, it’s certainly time.

Another time-sensitive topic is how your organization’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy addresses gender identity issues. Businesses are being advised to include the term “gender identity or expression” or “gender identity” in their non-discrimination policies.

Let’s not forget about Weapons in the Workplace and Social Media and Networking. Even if your Employee Handbook has language on these topics, regulations and case law may have changed how the policy should be written.

Your Employee Handbook is as unique as your business. It is not a one-size fits all, as the number of employees you have affects the topics you must cover. For instance, the Family Medical Leave Act should be in a company’s handbook only if the business has 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius.

Many Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce businesses have a presence in Maryland and must straddle both sets of state laws. In the recent past, Maryland enacted the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (also referred to as the

Maryland Sick and Safe Leave Act) that requires all Maryland employers to provide sick and safe leave to eligible employees.

Another “hot” topic for Employee Handbooks is marijuana in the workplace. Does your Drug and Alcohol Policy require voluntary disclosure of medical marijuana or any other controlled substance if the employee is in a safety-sensitive position? As you know, this landscape is ever-evolving and there is not much case law to help businesses navigate the uncharted terrain.

Chamber President Gary Laird will be participating in an advanced manufacturing panel at the regional Apprenticeship Summit hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on Tuesday, March 3. As a panelist, Laird will be sharing the Chamber's experience with its apprenticeship model in manufacturing, as well as other workforce development initiatives.

The Summit is targeted to employers and apprenticeship sponsors in the Philadelphia metropolitan statistical area, encompassing southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware. The Summit is organized in cooperation with state apprenticeship agencies and U.S. Department of Labor regional offices in the three states and will focus on national and regional trends in new and innovative apprenticeship activity and “lessons learned.� Employers with successful apprenticeship programs in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and IT will share their experience and insights with employers in the respective industries.

Crabbs & Crabbs Receives Small Law Firm Pro Bono Award

At the York County Bar Association's annual dinner in January, Crabbs & Crabbs was awarded the York County Bar Foundation's Small Law Firm Pro Bono Award, as recognition of the firm's three attorneys' pro bono work in the community. The three attorneys at the firm -- John Crabbs, Muriel Crabbs, and Ruth Crabbs Gunnell -- are active members of the YCBA. In 2019, all three of the firm's attorneys provided pro bono service through individual representation at Protection From Abuse hearings and committed involvement in the “PFA days” coverage, providing critical help to many clients who would not have been able to afford the benefit of legal counsel otherwise.

The Cross Keys Village Stamp Group Needs You!

The Stamp Project at Cross Keys Village currently consists of 40 assiduous volunteers who process over 1 million stamps each year.

Donated stamps are carefully prepared, organized, and sold as “lots” to philatelic resellers.

Why does the group gather every week – since 1981 – to complete this painstaking work? It’s all for a good cause: Proceeds from this activity net more than $4,000 in profit each year, generously given to the Good Samaritan Fund to help defray costs for healthcare residents, or used to purchase items that benefit the entire community.

The Stamp Group is appealing to businesses and individuals in our community to donate ordinary used and canceled stamps. Envelopes with cancelled stamps may be saved as is or cut with the stamp portion intact, leaving half-inch border (the stamp diminishes in value if it is cut too close).

You may mail or deliver your collected stamps to: Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community Att: Volunteer Services 2990 Carlisle Pike New Oxford, PA 17350 If needed, volunteers will pick up the stamps from your business location. You may call the Volunteer Services office at (717) 624-5227 to arrange for this service or if you have any questions about this project.

The Exchange Club of Hanover is pleased to present the 68th Annual Builders' Home & Garden Show. This event benefits the Exchange Club of Hanover’s scholarship fund, community service projects, and efforts to prevent child abuse.

This year's event will take place on March 12, 13, & 14 at the former Weis Markets located at 1047 Baltimore Street.

Show hours are 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13. Hours on Saturday, March 14 are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults; children under 16 get in free when accompanied by an adult.

RECENTLY RETIRED STOCK AND LEADER ATTORNEY AWARDED THE 2019 JANE ALEXANDER AWARD Earlier this year, the York County Bar Association held its Annual Recognition Dinner, acknowledging many attorneys for their dedication over the last year. Recently retired Stock and Leader Attorney Jane Schussler was presented with the 2019 Jane Alexander Award.

The Jane Alexander Award, presented by the Women in Law Committee of the York County Bar, is bestowed to a female resident in York County who has advanced the legal rights of women through example, education, or activism in the legal community.

Schussler's advocacy for women was at the forefront of her practice for over 36 years.

She mentored high school girls interested in legal careers through the Leadership York, Future Leaders of York Program.

She continues advocating for women today by volunteering with Turning Point Counseling and Advocacy Center, Pappus House, and the York County Community Foundation Women’s Giving Circle. In 2014, Schussler was the first and only York attorney to win the York Athena Award presented to a woman in the community who exhibits the qualities of outstanding leadership, professional excellence, community service, and is influential in assisting other women in attaining those qualities.

Bernosky will be responsible for leading YCCF’s efforts to help donors achieve their charitable giving goals during and after their lifetimes. Hill, a senior wealth advisor and the director of practice management, has been with Domani Wealth since 2008. She has regularly taken on more responsibility, and today her role includes developing client relationships, overseeing business systems and processes and serving on several committees within the firm.

As a partner, Hill will assume additional leadership and decision-making responsibilities in the areas of operations, finance and practice management.

Cobb provides accounting, consulting, and tax services to the firm’s small business and individual clients.

She specializes in small businesses involved with residential and commercial real estate.

Oyster has more than 20 years of experience and is an integral member of the firm’s government audit niche, nonprofit audit niche, and low-income housing niche. He directs more than 70 engagements each year and has significant experience in performing single audits. He also performs peer reviews of other CPA firms, which helps to enhance our own audit procedures.

Oyster is an instructor of in-house training programs on governmental and nonprofit accounting. Additionally, he is a member of the firm’s Accounting & Auditing Committee.
