I am very excited to be part of 2024’s Discover Hanover Magazine as Editor-in-Chief! Not only is this my first year with the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, but Discover Hanover Magazine has a brand new look for its 16th year of publication!
Growing up, I lived west of Gettysburg and Hanover was a frequent destination for my friends, family, and myself! It was a welcome getaway from the vast agricultural landscape and battlefields of Gettysburg I had grown accustomed to. Hanover’s variety of restaurants, activities, and shopping kept us coming back, and as I grew over the last three decades, so has Hanover! The goal of this year’s Discover Hanover Magazine was to really highlight how far Hanover has come! While we will always recognize Hanover as a manufacturing town booming with commerce and prosperity, we also turn our eyes to the future and realize just how much this South-Central PA community has grown. In the 16th edition of Discover Hanover Magazine, you will see an array of beautiful imagery that captures the spirit of the Greater Hanover area. I would like to thank all of our local businesses who allowed us to come and take photographs and make this edition of Discover Hanover Magazine the best one yet! What comes to mind when you think of Hanover, Pennsylvania? Some may think of its snack food history and that it is home to Utz Snacks and Snyder’s of Hanover (now owned by Campbell’s) or Hanover’s manufacturing footprint or the world renowned Hanover Shoe Farms. But Hanover has several other key places that really make this small town stand out!
First, we have the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center providing culture and education to the community. Celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2023, the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center hosts live music, comedy, and theatrical shows. They have also undergone a series of renovations, so it is the perfect time to check their schedule, find a show that speaks to you, and visit this iconic Hanover attraction! Another well-regarded establishment in the Hanover area is the Warehime-Myers Mansion, built in

1911. The mansion is more than just its beautiful neo-classical exterior, it is also home to an eclectic collection of furniture and decorations. The mansion now serves as home to the Hanover Area Historical Society after it was donated to the Historical Society by William Warehime in exchange for the conservation and upkeep of the property. Visitors are welcome to tour the mansion, museum, and grounds during their open hours. This next location may come as a surprise. The Famous Hot Weiner is another well-known staple of Hanover! This hot dog shop has been in business for over one-hundred years and has been owned by the current owners since 1928. The Famous Hot Weiner boasts three locations, two in Hanover and one in West York, and serves up some of York County’s best hot dogs, chili, and other “famous” menu items.

HANOVER dining Hanover, though fondly known as the snack food capital of the world, is home to a myriad of quality dining establishments. From casual to upscale and from long-time local favorites to bold newcomers, Hanover’s food scene has something for everyone.
A recent addition to Hanover’s downtown is OAK Artisan Cookery. Starting in 2014 in The Markets at Hanover, OAK opened up their own location a block down from Center Square. Patrons of OAK can expect to experience an industrial-style atmosphere while they enjoy artisan wood-fire pizzas, seasonal fare, and carefully crafted signature cocktails.

The Markets at Hanover has a ton of great food options, including its very own pub. The Public House at the Markets, created by the owners of the Markets at Hanover, is a restaurant and bar that also features an arcade, indoor and outdoor seating, Sunday brunch, trivia nights, and live music. So not only is their food and bar snacks delicious, it’s a fun place to bring your friends and family to enjoy great food, drinks, and more!
If you’re in the mood for seafood, we have a recommendation for that as well. Check out Bay City Restaurant, a family-owned and operated dining establishment offering seafood, steak, pasta, and more! Celebrating 60 years of business in 2023, Bay City offers some of the best seafood dishes in the area and still uses their original recipes. Their restaurant also features an outdoor patio for casual dining and a banquet hall for events and celebrations.

Another popular dining spot serving quality food is the Altland House Grill & Pub. Having opened before the 1900s, the Altland House is one of the oldest taverns in the country! As if that alone wasn’t interesting enough, the Altland House offers catering service, has an inn portion to their establishment, and has an onsite brewery. The Altland House is positioned right on the square in Abbottstown and just on the outskirts of Hanover! Hanover also hosts several locally owned Mexican restaurants, each with their own recipes, flavors, and homemade specials! A few of the downtown favorites are Blessing Restaurant, La Libertad, and Tacos Y Tortas. Though they are within a short walk from one another, you can expect a unique and delicious experience from each one. So if you are looking to try something outside of the American pub fare, woodfire pizzas, and seafood we mentioned earlier, be sure to give these authentic Mexican food restaurants a try! Hanover has these outstanding restaurants and so much more! From the center of Hanover to the outskirts of town, good food is always available!

Whether you live here, visit frequently, or have even just heard about Hanover, you’ve probably heard about our bustling brewery and bar scene! Beginning at the center of Hanover, downtown has several breweries that are just a short walk from one another. Something Wicked Brewing Co. and Fat Bat Brewing Co. are just a block away from Center Square and are conveniently right next to each other for your next barhop. Something Wicked also has its own “Wicked Kitchen,” ensuring that you are well-fed during your time there. They serve local ciders, wine, and other local beers while also brewing and pouring their own beer. And Fat Bat Brewing Co., just a few steps away, also features their own beer, seltzers, small plates, and appetizers. Sit at the bar on the second floor or grab a table on the first floor next to the tanks for a truly authentic brewery experience! Aldus Brewing Co. is another great local brewery for locals and visitors to enjoy. It is located in the original Snyder’s of Hanover factory in south Hanover. Aldus prides themselves on focusing on the tastes of their customers and creating a fun and approachable drinking experience. The brewers are always experimenting and trying new things when crafting their beer, so visiting more than once is highly recommended. Additionally, an extension of their brewery, The Dolphin & Anchor Pub, is in the works in Center Square. Heading east on route 116, you will find Sign of the Horse Brewery, paying homage to a 1700s Hanover tavern under the same name. Sign of the Horse, just like our other breweries in the area, craft their beer locally and serve a menu of delicious pub food. They also brew and serve a variety of seasonal beers, so be sure to keep an

FOOD & DRINK eye on their website to stay up to date on what the change of weather brings! They also have a second location in Red Lion, PA to serve their brews to even more of York County. Hanover has an impressive brewery scene, and the list continues past what we have already covered. There are a few places in Hanover that serve their own house-brewed beer, even if they are not commonly referred to as a brewery. A few great examples of this are Warehouse Gourmet, Public House at the Markets, and the Altland House (which houses Center Square Brewing). Each of these establishments, while serving as dining establishments and offering signature cocktails, also brew and serve their own house-made beer. These businesses really do it all! Hanover, Pennsylvania is unofficially referred to as the “snack food capital of the world”. Hanover takes great pride in this, but how did Hanover get that title? Since 1909, Hanover has been a hub of snack food production, starting with Harry Warehime who created Old Tyme Pretzels. Eventually the Warehime family created Snyder’s Bakery which made a wide range of snacks, including pretzels, of course. Over time, they became the modern-day Snyder’s of Hanover, which has been acquired by Campbell’s Soup Co. Another brand originating in Hanover that you may be familiar with is Utz. The Utz story began in 1921 with Bill and Salie Utz producing Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips in their small kitchen. Currently, Utz produces over 3.3 million pounds of snacks per week and is a major reason Hanover is a top player in the snack food industry.
While Hanover is home to these large snack and pretzel producers, our town is also serving up freshly made pretzels from local sellers! Revonah Pretzels, having opened in 1935, is a big part of Hanover’s pretzel history. The pretzels are made from their original sourdough recipe and each one is rolled and twisted by hand and then salted and baked in their stone oven. Newer to the pretzel game, but just as tasty, is the Pretzel Lady. Located in the Hanover Market House, Pretzel Lady makes their pretzel dough from scratch and hand rolls it each business day, focusing on serving hot, fresh, and delicious pretzels. Hanover, fondly known as the snack food capital of the world, has made its mark in snack food and pretzel history and continues to honor this title. Through events highlighting the “Snacktown” brand, to snack food inspired specials in our local restaurants, to pretzel decorations throughout the town, it is clear that Hanover has really embraced its snack food past, present, and future!

Moving onto desserts, let’s start with Crabb’s Tropical Treat, or just “the Tropical Treat” as many of the locals call it. This seasonal retro drive-in style diner has been serving classic American fare- and of course- ice cream- for 70 summer seasons as of 2023! It’s a local and visitor favorite, and as you drive by it in the summertime, you can expect the parking lot to be full of excited customers! If you are looking to stay closer to downtown and skip the drive-in experience, however, York Street Treat is another great option for that retro feel where you can get carry-out food and ice cream. And, while they are open year-round, they have plenty of picnic tables to sit at while you enjoy your ice cream on a sunny day!
Starting off the way any great day should start- with coffee! Hanover hosts a slew of local coffee shops that all serve up coffee in their own special way. Ghouls and Grinds, operating at two locations, features a charmingly spooky feel with their year-round Halloween theme. And their breakfast sandwiches are scary good! Another coffee company that is on the rise in Hanover and causing quite a stir! Britton Coffee Co. arrived on the scene over the last couple years and are already serving greatness- and donuts- to the Hanover

Another purveyor of ice cream that deserves mention is Half Pint Creamery. Half Pint opened its doors in 2015 and has proven to be so popular, they have even opened up two more locations outside of Hanover! They offer a massive array of scooped ice cream and they are always coming up with something new! They also sell their ice cream by the pint and have pre-made and made to order ice cream cakes. Speaking of a variety of fun-flavors, Ripleigh’s Creamery will challenge even the most adventurous tastebuds! While Ripleigh’s Creamery offers the classics such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, they also boast many unconventional flavors such as wasabi ginger pineapple and hot wing. And, for a limited time, they even offered Utz’s Mike’s Hot Honey flavored and Snyder’s Honey Mustard Pretzel flavor! Ripleigh’s origins are just as interesting as their ice cream. The ice cream company was started by a teenager, who had opened the first Ripleigh’s location in Emmitsburg, Maryland at age 14! Hanover is a hub for delicious ice cream, and plenty of other sweet treats can be found nearby. Shops selling smoothies and smoothie bowls have made their way to Hanover. First, we have The Smoothie Lounge. They are located in the North Hanover Mall and have recently opened up a carry-out location on the Carlisle Pike. They have a variety of delicious and refreshing smoothies, smoothie bowls and juices and create-your-

Decked Out Donuts, just as the name suggests, sells incredibly cute and creative decorated donuts! And they’re more than just eye-catching, these homemade yeast-raised donuts are made fresh every day. They serve cookies, muffins, and coffee to complement your morning donut run. What makes Decked Out Donuts special as well is that it was opened by a local mother of five who loves to bake! While Hanover has maintained much of its history through its architecture and old homes, luxury living is on the rise downtown! Tailored Real Estate is a property management company that manages both residential and commercial properties and they have worked to refresh the apartment scene in Hanover. While they offer a range of apartments that are located throughout York County, having luxury rentals available has enhanced the standard of living in this area!

Tailored Real Estate acquired the historic Richard McAllister Hotel in 2019 and transformed the building into a luxury apartment complex. While the outside of the building is largely the same, the inside has been refreshed and renovated. Another set of luxury apartments has also recently been constructed on Chestnut Street. These luxurious rentals feature onebedroom apartments and up to two-bedroom multilevel apartments. These recent changes to Hanover’s residences provide a welcoming living situation for newcomers and those looking to upgrade!

We have mentioned plenty of things to do in town and at various business locations, but Hanover has even more to offer when you step off the beaten path. Likely the most notable outdoor location in the area is Codorus State Park, a 3,500-acre park located just east of Hanover, surrounding Lake Marburg. Codorus is a heavily wooded area offering a variety of outdoors activities. Visitors to the park can take an hour or an afternoon to hike the trails throughout the park or run the trails if you are athletically inclined. If you’re not interested in exploring the trails on foot, the paths are open to bikes and to those who wish to horseback ride. Just looking to get away, relax, and connect with nature? Picnicking and camping is a great way to spend time at Codorus! Just make sure you reserve your spot online before camping overnight. And Codorus is home to many species of Pennsylvania’s wildlife, so bring your binoculars and keep your eyes and ears open. Lake Marburg, a massive lake in the middle of the park, is where residents and visitors alike enjoy boating, kayaking, and fishing, all with the proper permits. And while it is prohibited to swim in the lake due to dramatically fluctuating water height, there is a swimming pool open to visitors in the summertime! There is no shortage of outdoor activities to do at Codorus State Park and all it takes is a less than ten-minute drive from the center of town. Spend a few minutes, a few hours, the day, or even the night!

THE PATH TO A
trail town
The Hanover area has an exciting project in the works that is sure to spark the interest of hikers, bikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts! The York County Rail Trail Authority (YCRTA) has come up with a plan to turn Hanover into a “Trail Town” as part of the York County Trail Towns Program. The goal is to construct a ten-foot-wide walking and biking trail from Hanover all the way to Spring Grove and beyond. There are several sections of the trail that have already been completed. The hope of the YCRTA is that it will be completed 3-4 years from this time. By mid2025, the YCTRA plans to fully connect the existing Hanover Trolley Trail to the Jacobs Mill area, north of Route 116. The benefits of the completion of the trail extend far beyond just a means of getting outdoors- though we think that is almost reason enough! The creation of the trail and its use by the community will improve

the quality of life for residents and offer another opportunity for physical activity. The trail will also offer economic benefits as it will attract visitors and tourists to Hanover and possibly new residents. With an increase in residents, we can expect to see an improvement in Hanover’s workforce. And since the trail connects Hanover to Spring Grove, opening up a path of non-motorized travel to Hanover’s downtown. Furthermore, Spring Grove is in the process of being connected to West Manchester, lengthening the overall trail and increasing opportunity for an exchange of visitors. Lastly, but certainly not least, part of the plan of constructing this trail includes a restoration effort of the natural landscape that runs along the trail. For example, the YCRTA aims to fix a portion of the Oil Creek Watershed that has been damaged by erosion. The YCRTA also aims to use locally sourced materials for the overall project, making this a win-win for our community and business community. The greater Hanover area is excited for this expansion into the outdoors!
FAMILY FUN outdoors
While Hickory Falls offers indoor activities such as laser tag and an arcade, be sure to check out their outdoors activities on a nice, sunny day. Bring the family for a round of mini-golf or race around their outdoor track in the go-carts! End your visit with refreshing Italian ice from their onsite Rita’s. Check them out!

events
Hanover hosts several events throughout the year, many of them taking place outside! Each year in July, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce holds Snack Town Street Fair (pictured above) and then the Snack Town Brewfest in the early fall. End of summer brings the annual Hanover Chili Cookoff, a popular event that features more than just chili and benefits the Guthrie Memorial Library. Happening about a month after that is the Snack Town RunFest! RunFest includes a timed half marathon, a timed 5k, and a fun run for the kids. We also have holiday events later in the year including the Halloween Parade and Christmas in Hanover, which features Santa’s Cabin in Center Square and a Christmas Tree Lighting.

Hanover offers many opportunities to focus on your physical and mental health!
HEALTH & FITNESS Hanover boasts quite a few options when it comes to staying in shape, and it does not always have to involve getting outdoors! If your preferred method of working out is a day at the gym, the Hanover Area YMCA is a great place to look into. With a variety of workout options, a focus on community wellness, and a mission towards helping individuals transform themselves, the YMCA has options for anyone looking to improve their health. In addition to standard gym equipment, the YMCA teaches exercise classes, youth and elderly fitness programs, personal trainers, and resources to help you work out at home on the days you just want to stay in! They also have two pools and offer water-based exercise classes- a rarity in this area! Hanover is also home to some familiar names in the fitness industry such as Planet Fitness and Platinum Fitness, but if you are looking for something outside of the conventional gym setting, we have those too! In the past few years, Hanover has welcomed two new rock-climbing gyms to the area. The first one is Rock Bottom Climbing Gym (pictured left) which is located right downtown. This gym is great for climbers to practice bouldering and improve overall strength. It is also conveniently close to many other amenities downtown, so walking there is a breeze. The second rock climbing gym that has emerged in the area is Warehouse Rocks Climbing & Fitness. While it is in the Abbottstown area (north of Hanover), it is a short trip! Not only do they feature bouldering routes, but they offer rope climbing as well. They also schedule outdoor climbing excursions from time to time. Since 1990, the Hanover Boxing Club has been teaching courses to individuals of all ages, from beginners to competitve fighters. Throughout this publication, we have talked in depth about what Hanover has to offer now in 2024, but Hanover’s origin dates back to the 18th Century! Hanover was built in 1763 where the streets leading from five major towns connect. Those towns are Abbottstown, Baltimore, Carlisle, Frederick, and York. In addition, Monocacy Road runs quite close to Hanover. Monocacy Road was once a primary route for settlers moving from Philadelphia to south-central Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Proximity to this road further solidified Hanover as a hub of commerce and, quite literally, put the town on the map. There are several ways to immerse yourself in Hanover’s rich history. For example, Hanover is one of seven communities designated as a Pennsylvania

Civil War Trails community. Relive the encounter known as the Battle of Hanover through a two-mile self-guided walking tour laid out by wayside markers. Brochures are available at the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, Guthrie Memorial Library and local hotels and lodging. The Hanover Area Historical Society is another great resource to experience Hanover’s history. Local citizens founded the Historical Society in 1965 to preserve and promote the history of the Hanover area. The Society currently runs the Neas House at 103 W. Chestnut St., the Warehime-Myers Mansion at 305 Baltimore St. and the Yelland Research Library at 21 Baltimore St. Tours of the Neas House and WarehimeMyers Mansion are available. The Research Library is open to the public, but an appointment must be made first. HANOVER HISTORY Established in 1980, the Hanover Fire Museum houses 200 years of Hanover’s fire service history and honors those who dedicated their lives to protecting the community. Visitors can pull an actual fire alarm box and see and hear an original Gamewell Fire Alarm System from 1911 that served the Hanover Borough community. Exhibits showcase fire vehicles of all types, including an 1882 Silsby Steamer, hand-pulled pumps and a coffee grinder type fire pump. Staff is made up of past volunteer or career firefighters who are very knowledgeable of the items on display. Learn about these and more aspects of Hanover’s unique history by scanning the QR code!
