Despite the rainy forcast, over 1,100 attendees gathered at Good Field to celebrate the 2nd Annual Snack Town Brewfest on Saturday, June 23. Attendees lucked out, with temperatures remaining mild throughout the day and no rain during the entirety of the event. With 45 breweries and wineries in attendance, as well as eleven food vendors, attendees had the opportunity to taste a wide variety of brews and foods. As for activities, attendees could choose from yard games such as giant Jenga, corn hole, and Mountain Pong, as well as fun lawn games provided by presenting sponsors Utz and Snyder's-Lance. DJ BreezeMon, Rocky 98.5, and 6 Cents kept the crowd entertained as they sipped and sampled. The proceeds from this year's event will go towards programs like Main Street Hanover, the Hanover Apprenticeship Program, and other economic development and workforce initiatives.
The chamber would like to thank the attendees, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and the Hanover Borough for their support. Thank you to our presenting sponsors, Utz Quality Foods, Inc. and Snyder’s of Hanover.
Also, thank you to our VIP Sponsors, J.A. Myers Homes and Eichelberger Performing Arts Center. Finally, thank you to our Designated Driver Sponsor, LifeSource Water, and our Shade Sponsor, Gettysburg Rental.

New Seminar Series: Recruiting and Interviewing for Hiring Managers If you are having difficulty finding qualified candidates to fill critical jobs, you are not alone. The unemployment rate in Pennsylvania has dipped to 4.8 percent with a nationwide record low of 3.9 percent. Even if you decided to recruit from another part of the country, qualified candidates would still be hard to find. Labor shortages have been predicted for the past several years in key industries such as construction, skilled manufacturing, skilled trades and nursing. The unemployment rate isn’t the only reason for these shortages. A lack of training for skilled positions like machining and plumbing along with the most experienced employees poised to retire are just two of the reasons for today’s hiring challenges. All of this adds up to employers needing to find creative ways to fill empty and newly created positions. What is a hiring manager to do? First and foremost, ensure that your recruiting process and skills are current to attract the best and most qualified talent to your organization. It starts with a sound recruitment advertisement based on relevant job responsibilities. (This same information should be in the job description presented to the candidate.) Be sure to include not only what the company seeks but what the selected candidate will be eligible to receive in the way of benefits and/or total compensation that can include career advancement opportunities.
Legislative Roundtable Update Chamber Legislative Roundtables are held quarterly on the FIRST Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m. at Dutch Country Restaurant. Please join us for the next roundtable on Friday, August 3. Please note, we have a new format for our roundtables! As the chamber continues to develop a legislative scorecard, we have restructured our roundtables to focus on issues and legislation of upmost importance to the Hanover business community. Throughout the year, we will continue to follow up with our local legislators to ensure that the voices of the business community are heard. Over the next year you can expect to see a scorecard (similar to a report card) of votes which we will track based on issues chosen by chamber members. To stay up-to-date, consider joining us at the August Legislative Roundtable. Can’t make it? Make sure to subscribe to the chamber’s digital “Chamber Insider” newsletter, a quarterly brief sent straight to your inbox regarding the topics that matter most to Hanover. To register or subscribe, please contact the chamber office at 717-637-6130 ext. 100 or office@hanoverchamber.com, or visit www.hanoverchamber.com.
Once an ad has been successfully placed on internet job boards and the company website, then the real work begins: screening resumes, conducting robust telephone interviews and inviting the most qualified candidates for in-person interviews. Set up interviews in a timely fashion, otherwise qualified candidates may get “away” because the process took too long and the candidate took another job or had multiple offers from which to choose. The key factor to success is being prepared. Hiring managers sometimes find themselves unprepared and ill equipped to conduct an interview, as this is a skill for which many managers never receive training. The interviewer should develop questions that provide information on past experience, professional objectives and future goals. A written script of questions helps to assure the interview is non-discriminatory and fair. For more tips and “tricks,” please plan to join fellow regional hiring managers for the upcoming HR Seminar Series “Effective Recruiting and Interviewing for Hiring Managers” on Sept. 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. You’ll learn critical skills in order to make impactful hiring decisions. Tools and resources will be provided such as best practices for hiring in a difficult labor market. This series costs $50 and requires pre-registration. For more information, turn to page 11 or visit hanoverchamber.chambermaster.com/events/calendar/.

Donations – Christmas is Coming! Main Street Hanover needs your donations to support Christmas activities in Hanover, including maintenance of the new Santa's Cabin! Visiting 'the Cabin', our historically traditional Hanover landmark, has been a cherished holiday activity for 80 years. While we were sad to see such a special landmark leave us, our beloved Santa's Cabin was in a state of great disrepair, and was thus retired. Thanks to a generous donation from the Eagles Club, we are excited to have a brand-new cabin for this year, keeping this wonderful tradition alive! We still need funds for cabin maintenance and decoration, new Christmas decorations for the town, and new holiday events. Please consider donating! Please note: the Borough of Hanover, Hanover's Christmas Committee, and Main Street Hanover and its partners, are raising funds to build the Christmas activities and cabin maintenance fund in Hanover. No tax-payer money will be used in the building of this cabin, the decorating of the town, or the Christmas activities. It is up to our community to support this effort. We are looking to our local business community to help us afford such great expenses. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help to keep our community traditions alive this Christmas! If you are unable to make a contribution, we invite you to participate in other ways, like volunteering at the cabin, participating in the parade, or joining the planning effort.
Downtown merchants have teamed up to create one-of-a-kind mini-golf holes in their businesses. We invite you to participate in a mini-golf tournament unlike any you have ever seen!
To give, please make checks out to Main Street Hanover, Inc. and mail to 146 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA 17331 – Christmas Fund in memo line.
Simply come downtown, start at any participating location, grab a map, and play! Golfers will spend the afternoon enjoying a walk through downtown, visiting businesses, and playing some of the most unique mini-golf holes in the area.
If you would like to learn more about the work of Main Street Hanover, follow us on Facebook or contact us at 717-637-6130 x101 or jtrucksess@ycea-pa.org
