2012 HANOVER COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW

F

irst-year head coach Steve Baudendistel and Hanover College’s football squad will be challenged early, and often, during the 2012 campaign.

Andre Nash and Rashawn West. The staff will rely on 47 returning letterwinners from last season’s 5-5 squad, which posted the program’s second consecutive secondplace finish in the HCAC standings.

Baudendistel, along with four new assistant coaches, will lead the Panthers through a schedule that features three teams which earned berths in the NCAA III national playoffs last season, as well as a balanced Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate.

Cullen will guide the offensive unit, which returns eight starters and key elements of potent attack.

Hanover will open the campaign Sept. 1 against Illinois College, which posted a 9-2 mark last season. The clash marks the first meeting between the schools since 1942. Wabash College, a former rival in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference, visits L.S. Ayres Field in the Panthers’ home-opener Sept. 8. The Little Giants were 12-1 last year and advanced to the national semifinals. League-rival Franklin College will host the annual Victory Bell clash Nov. 10. The Grizzlies were 10-2 last season, including a 40-15 decision against Hanover to cap the regular season. In between, the Panthers will square off against seven Heartland Conference foes. Three of those teams, the College of Mount St. Joseph, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Bluffton University, each posted 5-3 league records last season and shared second place with Hanover in the final standings. Baudendistel, an assistant on the Panthers’ staff for the past nine seasons, is joined by new coordinators Ben Cullen and Denny Dorrel, along with assistants

Hanover’s offense ranked second in the Heartland Conference with 32.8 points and 414.4 yards per outing last season. The Panthers’ offense returns four receivers, a versatile starting quarterback and three linemen. Senior wide receiver Daniel Passafiume and junior quarterback Dexter Britt headline the returnees. Passafiume was selected a pre-season first-team all-American by D3football. com. He missed the entire 2011 campaign with mononucleosis, but is a three-time all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference selection and Hanover’s career receptions leader with 254 catches. During the 2010 season, Passafiume became Hanover’s career receptions leader after posting a Heartland Conference-best 91 catches for 958 yards and 11 touchdowns. The effort raised his career total to 254 receptions, which surpassed the Panthers’ previous mark of 249 set by all-American Tarrik Wilson from 1996 to 1999. Passafiume set the NCAA’s all-divisions record for receptions in a game with 25 catches in a 2009 contest against Franklin. The outing eclipsed a mark previously held by NFL hall-of-famer Jerry Rice (1983) and Chas Gessner (2002). Britt was a second-team all-HCAC selection after splitting time at quarterback and receiver last season. He led the Panthers with 225.8 yards of total offense per outing and ranked first in the HCAC in passing efficiency (140.7). Britt completed 151-of-253 passes for 1,883 yards and ranked second in the conference with 16 touchdowns through the air. He also rushed for 375 yards on 123 carries and scored a team-high seven touchdowns on the ground.

6

Senior Dwayne Eubanks, a member of Hanover’s basketball squad for two years, was a first-team all-HCAC honoree after his first season with the football squad. He ranked second in the Heartland Conference with 76.6 receiving yards per outing and posted 48 catches for 766 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Panthers’ rushing attack averaged nearly 150 yards per game on the ground last season, but returns just one of the squad’s top four carriers (Britt). The running game should benefit from the return of three starters in the trenches. Junior Joe Sander, along with sophomores Ryan Hahn and Kevin Schlenker, anchor a young offensive line. Sander, a two-year letterwinner, has logged 16 consecutive starts, including all 10 games last season at right tackle. Hahn started all 10 contests at center for the Panthers’ last season, while Schlenker earned a starting nod at guard in his first collegiate campaign. Dorrel, a former Hanover lineman, will oversee the Panthers’ defensive unit. The group, which returns eight starters, led the Heartland Conference in total defense in 2011, limiting opponents to 303.3 yards per game.

Senior linebacker Andy Dalton, along with junior linemen Josh Gilb and Ajani Jones, will anchor the Hanover defense. Dalton, a three-time all-Heartland Conference honoree, is one of three linebackers returning to their starting slots this season. He led the HCAC with 107 tackles last season. He also posted 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and three interceptions. Sophomore Justin Magaw earned increased playing time as the season progressed and finished the campaign with 40 tackles, including five for loss. Junior Brandon Foster added 31 stops. Gilb, a former linebacker, moved to defensive end last season and recorded 42 tackles, including a team-leading 8.5 tackles for loss. Jones, in his first season as a starter on the line, was a second-team all-conference choice one year ago. He totaled 27 tackles, with five tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. Hanover returns three veterans to its defensive secondary. The trio helped the Panthers rank second in the league in pass defense in 2011, allowing 167.7 yards per outing.

Cornerbacks Jason Chisholm and Derrick Worden combined for 64 tackles last season. Chisholm, a senior, had 37 tackles. Worden totaled 27 tackles and led the Panthers with four interceptions, eight passes defended and two fumble recoveries.

Matt McConnell, a junior, returns to his safety slot. He was third on the squad with 51 tackles and second on the team with seven defended passes in 2011.

HEARTLAND CONFERENCE The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference is a union of 10 private small colleges and universities from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Formed in 1997, the Heartland Conference is affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and participates at the Division III level, which offers no athletic scholarships. The league currently sponsors men’s championship in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and wrestling. Championships are awarded in nine women’s sports, including: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball. Five member schools were formerly affiliated with the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and three schools were members of the Association of Mideast Colleges. Anderson University, Franklin College, Hanover, Manchester University and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology were each charter members of the ICAC. Bluffton University, Defiance College and the College of Mount St. Joseph were each members of the AMC. Transylvania University, a former member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), officially joined the Heartland Conference in 2001. Earlham College, a former member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, joined the HCAC prior to the 2010-11 academic year.

HANOVER, WE’RE FOR YOU In the hills of Indiana, Where the broad Ohio flows, Stands a college old in story, In our hearts her mem’ry glows, Her devoted sons and daughters, Bring to her illustrious fame, And where e’er their footsteps wander, They will praise her name. Chorus Hanover drive on down the field, Hanover hit that line, Hanover on to victory, Roll up that score this time, Undaunted on high our colors fly, The cardinal and the blue, So we’ll fight, yes, we’ll fight, For the goal’s in sight, Here’s to Hanover, We’re For You!!!
