For the earliest Hanoverians, the journey from the Ohio River to campus must have seemed daunting. With their homes behind them and their belongings in tow, they would have taken that first step, making their way up the hill to Hanover. And when they made it to the top and caught that first glimpse from the Point, they no doubt experienced a sense of accomplishment, the first of many moments of pride in their Hanover College experience.
For today’s first-year students, the annual Hike to the Point celebrates the path our forebears created for us and serves as an important milestone in their Hanover journey. In many ways, it helps build momentum. It is an early, shared accomplishmentreaching the top of that hill - and it makes the seemingly impossible – writing that first college paper, declaring a major, studying abroad, finishing comps, walking across the Commencement stage – seem achievable.
Just steps away from where the Class of 2023 completed their Hike to the Point, the Class of 2019 graduated on May 25. Among the 223 graduates there were 42 scholars who graduated with honors, and 15 students who received nationally competitive scholarships, including three Fulbright Scholars, four Gilman Scholars, and a Leadership Alliance Award recipient. These accomplishments were only hopes and dreams when they started their Hanover journey four years ago. With your help, those hopes and dreams became reality.
And with your help, the vision and goals of Hanover College are becoming reality. A few weeks ago, we were ranked #105 (up from #113) in US News & World Report’s 2020 best liberal arts schools, a point our campus, our alumni, and our friends can and should take great pride in. The average SAT score and GPA of the Class of 2023 is one of the highest in the past decade, and our retention rates continue to improve as we strengthen facilities and infrastructure, enhance our student life offerings, and provide more financial assistance to our students.
Your gifts – regardless of the size or designation – are helping our students and Hanover College embark on new paths, explore possibilities, and carry on in pursuit of our goals and dreams. With your help, we will continue to build and sustain the momentum needed to continue our journey upward and forward into our third century of transformative learning, meaningful service, and lifelong inquiry.
As always, I remain grateful for your continued belief in our mission and your loyal support of our students.
Thank you,
Lake Lambert, Ph.D. President

U.S. News & World Report 2019
Hanover College ranked #113 for National Liberal Arts Colleges and #89 for High School Counselor Rankings and #42 in Best Value Schools among 2,500 four-year colleges and universities in the country.
Princeton Review 2020
Hanover College was included on Princeton’s lists of the Best 385 Colleges in the nation and among the Top 20 Most Beautiful Campuses. Hanover was also highlighted as one of the Best Midwestern and Green Colleges.
Forbes
Hanover is listed among America’s Top Colleges by Forbes and also ranks among the best in private, liberal arts and colleges in the Midwest.
For nearly 200 years, Hanoverians have jointly ensured the College’s continued existence and, at times, survival, while also sharing its growth and successes.
Hanover continues to enjoy great success. Ninety-nine percent of recent graduates obtain jobs or pursue advanced degrees within seven months of commencement. Fifteen members of the Class of 2019 earned nationally competitive scholarships, including three Fulbright assistantships. Sixty percent of students engage in off-campus or study-abroad opportunities. New academic and athletic endeavors, such as engineering and swimming, have enhanced recruitment by drawing more than 50 students. The College captured its first Heartland Conference Commissioner’s Cup last year, signifying the combined success of all 22 athletic teams.
Hanoverians share in these accomplishments and advancements. Though we no longer sit in the classroom, contemplate Shakespeare in Stratford-Upon-Avon or compete in a Hanover uniform, our contributions make this possible for others.
Marabeth and I participate in the life of the College because we are honored to do so. We understand the importance of giving to Hanover at any level, whether it be time, knowledge or finances. Our greatest satisfaction comes from supporting the Levett Expendable Scholarship. The fund allows students to remain at Hanover when they face unexpected times of need.
Years ago, financial aid was not as prevalent on the College’s campus – I relied on assistance, while Marabeth did not. Today, support is critical as nearly 98 percent of Hanover students receive assistance.
How can we, as Hanoverians, continue to help? Alumni participation is perhaps more crucial now than any point in recent history. Our involvement affects students’ abilities to afford an education, but also plays a significant role in the recruitment process.
Publications, such as U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, are important tools in the college search process. These publications place great emphasis on alumni participation rates as a reflection of how much graduates value academic and social qualities, offerings and efforts.
Hanover’s participation rate was 18.25 percent during the 2018-19 fiscal year. (More than 250 alumni volunteered their time and nearly 2,000 attended events on campus or across the country.) The nation’s top-rated colleges and universities have alumni giving rates higher than 45 percent. The best-ranked institutions in Indiana average more than 25 percent.
Our participation is an opportunity to show what the College has meant to our lives, how much we value what Hanover stands for and adds to our communities. This opportunity is not purely about dollar totals. How much we support Hanover is vital, but it is also critically important THAT we support the College.
In the coming years, Hanover will face challenges from a myriad of external forces. A decline in the number of teenagers is expected. More students are leaving high school early to enter the workforce. The cost of higher education continues to rise. Together, we can overcome these obstacles. The College is positioning itself for a strong future. Through our efforts, large and small, we will ensure Hanover continues its mission, thrives and stands above.
There is strength in numbers.

Coated in mosquito repellant, biology major Ciara Mergler ’20 and two classmates hiked into the Hoosier National Forest this summer on a mission. There, under a canopy of old-growth walnut trees, were eight tent-shaped malaise traps that they had left a week earlier to capture and evaluate insect life within a 700-acre tract.
Caught and preserved in bottles of ethanol were a number of beetles and several fly species. Mergler, of Dayton, Ohio, logged her finds, against which future studies will be compared and by which the health of the forest can be assessed in years to come.
“Over time, insect populations can change, especially if there is logging or deforestation happening,” she said. “We’re establishing a baseline, which is something that hasn’t been established for this area yet. Some of these insects are a foundation in the food chain. Creatures will feed on them in order to survive.”
Mergler is one of 11 Hanover students chosen to participate in the Summer Research Fellows Program. Projects span the academic spectrum – from tree-ring dating to conducting oral histories of the College’s past. Efforts would not be possible without outside financial support, including gifts from alumni who include Jeff ’97 and Kristie Goodwin ’98 of Louisville, Ky. The pair earned biology and chemistry degrees, respectively, at Hanover.
The couple, both of whom did summer research (Kristie Goodwin did her work at a different institution), know
firsthand the value of the research experience, which allows students – without the distractions of the academic year – to dive headlong into their interests.
“Summer research was the highlight of my time at Hanover,” Jeff Goodwin said. “You work with a mentor, who becomes more of a colleague and a lifelong friend after that. It really helps out in the next steps toward graduate school, or medical school, or just life in general.”
A urologist, Jeff Goodwin, did summer research between his sophomore and junior years with Philip Barlow, a former theological studies professor. The following summer, with the aid of a Richter Grant Fellowship, he studied the evolutionary biology of a group of brackish water snakes in Thailand. For that project he collaborated with Carol Force, then the curator of amphibians and reptiles at the Field Museum in Chicago.
Said Kristie Goodwin, a former scientist, Pilates teacher and a mom of two, “It’s such a special time that the students can have. And it’s a special gift that we can give them. On top of that, we like to support the professors in their research and encourage them to come up with projects for the students.”
Student researchers are often co-authors on published research manuscripts and they frequently present findings at professional conferences. The experiences, by all accounts, form a solid
foundation for research they can expect to do in graduate school.
Because student researchers receive stipends – and extra funds so they can live on campus during the summer –per-student costs are about $2,500 for the summer.
“Without gifts, we would not be able to run a summer research program” said Glené Mynhardt, an assistant professor of biology and faculty adviser to Mergler. “I think of donors as the lifeblood. Without them we would never be able to compete with other colleges or research programs when it comes to undergraduate research.”
“I think of donors as the lifeblood. Without them we would never be able to compete with other colleges or research programs when it comes to undergraduate research.”
Many of the projects are ongoing and were initiated by faculty members. Others are created by students. While the fellows program is competitive, faculty members also handpick promising participants.
“What that means is we’re not just looking at the student’s grades, which often happens at larger research universities,” Mynhardt said. “We can pick students who we know have potential and, in fact, it’s those students who really shine when you get them in the lab.”
Mynhardt has been collaborating for the past five years with the nonprofit Indiana Forest Alliance, dedicated to the long-term health of the state’s native forests. The survey on which Mergler worked, known as an “ecoblitz,” not only establishes what kinds of insects survive deep in the forest, but also how well they are surviving.
For Mergler, summer research can be a 40hour or longer weekly commitment, which is impossible during the academic year.
“I mean, we can dabble a bit, but there’s already a lot going on and you have so much on your mind that it’s pretty difficult to get heavily involved in any sort of research when school is in session,” Mergler said. Last summer she conducted “predation trials” with velvet ants (which actually are hairy wasps) and toads. “Basically, I was seeing if toads could eat velvet ants.”
Notwithstanding mosquitoes, Mergler cannot think of anyplace she would have rather been this summer.
“I’m definitely more of a fieldwork person,” she said. “I like the lab, but I love getting the chance to go outside and actually see what’s going on.”
As a Hanover English major, Riki Crowe ’17 relied on need- and merit-based scholarships to earn her degree.
These days, she’s returning the favor. Crowe this year created the Riki Crowe Expendable Scholarship, a $1,000 award – split between semesters – that will be made annually to a Hanover student who has navigated the foster care system. (Expendable scholarships, unlike endowed scholarships, are funded each year by the donor.)
Her motivations are straightforward.
“I’m making an investment in a brighter future for everyone,” said Crowe, who manages e-commerce for Indianapolis-based Sigma Theta Tau, an honor society representing the nursing profession. “Educating young adults impacts all of society. You’re helping to create a better tomorrow for the world.”
Crowe’s reasons for creating the scholarship also are personal. In her spare time, she’s a volunteer court-appointed special advocate for children in Marion County. The nonprofit organization uses judge-appointed advocates to serve as role models for more than 600 at-risk children – all of them victims of neglect and abuse – who face extra challenges from a child welfare system roundly characterized as underfunded and overburdened.
Foster children face singular challenges, according to the National Center for Child Welfare Excellence. Because they often lack financial and emotional support, just 10 percent enroll in a degree or vocational certificate program. Of that total, only 26 percent will graduate.
“When you’re in a situation in which you don’t have the support that other Hanover students do, any amount of money can really make a difference,” Crowe said. “It can really make a difference in a successful college career.”
She established the scholarship without restrictions. Dollars can go toward tuition and fees, books, or even a spring term study abroad trip.
confidence in my abilities and an understanding of how to move through the world.
“More importantly,” she added, “it gave me a community of people who I knew would stand behind me, just like I’m standing behind students now. I still to this day know professors and staff members. We keep in contact and they’re always there to help me when I need it.”
Crowe’s passion for college endures. She has a Hanover license plate and she is the youngest member of the Presidents’ Club, a giving society that recognizes alumni and friends who donate $1,000 or more annually to the institution. At the College, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Mortar Board, Alpha Lambda Delta, the Feminist Club and the Business Scholars Program. She was president of Love Out Loud, the LGBTQ+ club, during her senior year.
“My favorite part of Hanover College is the community,” she said. “It’s such an open and welcoming place, where a person can make lifelong connections. Even when I go back today, I feel like I’ve come home.
Now that I’m in a place that I can help support Hanover students, I want to be able to do that.”
“Riki’s desire to give back to her alma mater at such a young age, while making a real impact for a current Hanoverian, is an inspiration,” said Jenni Wissel ’04, a senior gift officer for individual philanthropy. “It’s a common perception that creating a scholarship takes a large investment, but we can set up expendable scholarships starting at $500, and these gifts are often what make the Hanover experience a reality for students.
“It was a privilege to work with Riki to set up this scholarship. My favorite part of my job is helping alumni and donors make gifts that have special meaning for them. There are lots of creative ways to connect areas of personal interest and passion with giving to Hanover and Riki’s scholarship is a perfect example.”
For her initial scholarship, family members helped Crowe fund the award, gifting her birthday money toward the cause. Giving back has always been a priority.
“There is definitely something to be said for benefiting from alumni’s generosity and understanding the value of a Hanover College education,” Crowe said. “Hanover gave me a degree of

“Now that I’m in a place that I can help support Hanover students,” she added, “I want to be able to do that.”
Crowe enrolled at the College after a friend urged her to accompany him to his classes. It was then that Crowe met Dominque Battles, professor of English and writing coordinator.
“She treated me like any other student. She asked me questions and she was so passionate about literature,” Crowe recalled. “It was the first time someone talked about books the way I wanted to talk about books.”
Having a liberal arts degree “has allowed me to problem-solve and take on challenges that another degree would not assist me with,” she said. “It has given me the confidence to lead groups of people, deal directly with the chief executive officer of my organization and solve problems that I have little experience with.
“I’m not afraid of not knowing the answer, because I know that I can find the answer,” she added. “That skill is much more important than hard knowledge.”
The course description provides the bones of what is in store for students, but does not begin to elaborate on its “gifts of rich value,” as its subject wrote in “The Merchant of Venice.”
A Hanover College senior who blogged about her odd-year experience added flesh with this beginning entry: “Let’s blow this popsicle stand. Ah, to drink tea, study the Bard, and see a handful of live plays — a once-in-a-lifetime trip starts right now, so I should get moving.”
Four weeks later, as her time in England drew to a close, Kylie Miller ’19 continued, “Life in Stratford was simple: wake up by 8:30 a.m., eat a full English breakfast, go to class meetings, attend a workshop, browse the stores, eat dinner, catch a play and sleep. Then lather, rinse, repeat or just wake up and repeat. This attending Hanover thing has worked out well for me. Traveling to Europe for almost a month? Who wouldn’t say yes to that?”
For more than 50 years, Hanover English and theatre students have been saying “yes” to that by enrolling in “Shakespeare in England.” Jonathan Smith headed the College’s program from 1977-2015 and also led sojourns in 2017 and 2019 after he retired. He is a big reason why the program is still going strong and still offering a meaningful, immersive experience in Shakespeare’s England at a cost amenable to students’ budgets.
Smith came to Hanover to teach in 1974 after earning his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and his doctorate from Indiana University.
He knew from the expertise he shared in the classroom that, for Shakespeare, more than the play is the thing.
“The play doesn’t exist on the page,” he said. “If we’re not seeing the performance, we’re not covering the play.”
He also knew from his life experience how helpful any savings can be for students.
“I grew up without any money,” Smith said. “I’m the beneficiary of people who put a lot of money into education.”
He decided to do the same.
His years spent in heading the odd-year trips to England with Hanover students provided firsthand evidence of how, like almost everything else in the world, costs were mounting for the course. “I could see the writing on the wall,” he said. “I looked at the trends and the graph was not going in the right direction.”
Smith had an idea: An endowed fund that would keep the course cost per student at $4,000 even as other costs rose, with the fund picking up the other $2,000 in increases per student.
And he started with his own money, initially pledging $25,000 over five years, with the intention to raise another $25,000 over the next five years so there would be an endowed fund of $50,000 by the 50th anniversary of the Shakespeare in England program.
That was the seed. Here’s how it grew:
Smith recalled that Dennis Hunt, Hanover’s vice president of advance-
ment at the time, thought they needed to aim higher, say $400,000.
Again, Smith stepped up.
He doubled his pledge, raising his commitment to $50,000 over 10 years, and enlisting donors from alumni, past Shakespeare in England classes, Board of Trustees and others to commit the remainder. He credits Hunt and Darlene Connolly, who managed the capital campaign for the fund in the Office of Advancement, as invaluable to a success also ensured by those generous donors.
Today, Smith said, the endowed fund for Shakespeare in England is roughly $400,000 and students who take the course are able to have the same enriched experience as past classes without cuts to features of the program or increases in course costs. (There also are need-based scholarships available.)
Not quite “And, so clap hands and a bargain,” as Shakespeare wrote in “Henry V,” but a victory, all the same.
The course is a tradition at Hanover, he said, exciting and vital to the people who have taken it. Past students are very loyal to the program. Indeed, he said, on Shakespeare’s birthday in 2015, more than 80 Hanover-related people were in Stratford-upon-Avon to celebrate.
Although Smith is now retired from Hanover, he has led the England trips in 2017 and 2019, which he said was his last.
As a teacher.
The next time the class goes in 2021, he said, “I plan to visit the course as a tourist. My wife and I will travel over, too, and see a few plays and stay a few days.”

Dear Class of 1955,
I am very grateful and appreciative of this scholarship and financial support. This fund has helped me pursue higher education and personal growth. I am a senior Psychology major and I am very excited to plan for a student credit-receiving internship at Cornerstone Autism Center during Spring Term of 2019. It is an honor to receive this help. I have very much so enjoyed the time spent at Hanover College with all of its tranquility and community. I have learned on this campus that being perfect is an impossible tedious task and that I am better off being honest to myself and others about my efforts while learning from many inevitable mistakes.

Dear Class of 1954,
Thank you so much for the generous scholarship that was awarded to me this year. As you may know, my name is Zach Yetter and I am a sophomore here at Hanover. I am a Communication major, Spanish minor, member of the Business Scholars Program and a member of Phi Delta Theta. Hanover truly is my home away from home and even though I have only been here for 2 years, this wonderful place has left a lasting impact both on my academic career and who I am as a person. Your generous gift has allowed me not only to participate in these wonderful classes, but also to flourish both academically and socially. One last time I just want to say thank you for your generous gift and for supporting Hanover students like me.
Zach Yetter Class of 2021
My name is Abigail Anderson and I would like to thank you for establishing the scholarship fund that helps me attend this college. I knew when I first started looking at colleges that I wanted to go to a small school where I could truly flourish and when I toured Hanover’s campus, I knew it was the place for me. The cost of tuition was a point of concern, and I worried that it would be too much for my family to support. For this reason I want to thank you so very much for helping me to attend this school where I have truly found a home over the last year. It means the world to me that I can attend a school as wonderful as Hanover, in large part thanks to you and your continued support.
Thank you so much,
Abigail Anderson

I would like to personally thank you for the amount of help you have awarded me with over the past three years. Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of the things I have done here at Hanover College.
Right now, I am currently a senior that will be graduating in the spring. I am a Health and Movement Studies major, while also being a part of the Business Scholars Program. While participating in the programs I have been able to complete two internships for the Business Scholars Program, and I am currently completing an internship culminating experience for the Health and Movement Studies major.
I am also part of the Hanover College Baseball Team and Phi Gamma Delta. Both of the positions have helped me acquire two great leadership positions that will definitely help me in the future. I cannot express the amount of gratitude I have for both of these.
Again, I cannot thank the Class of 1957 enough for providing me with this amazing scholarship. It has enabled me to pursue education I never would have thought to be possible.
Sincerely,
Samuel N. Orem Class of 2019

Thank you for establishing the International Study Scholarship. Without this scholarship, I would not be getting the opportunity to study in Bulgaria this May with the Hanover College choirs. This will be a unique trip because it is the first time any Hanover College course has traveled to Bulgaria. While there, our choir will be on tour performing with many local choirs, attending an international choral festival, and learning about Bulgarian culture and music. I am so excited to be able to travel to the country, have new experiences I never thought would be possible, and to learn about how Bulgarian and other countries music is unique to them. This is something I am very passionate about, and I cannot wait to share what I learn with the world.
Thank you,
Rebecca Thorpe Class of 2020
