resist Design V, Fall 2018 Professor Judith Birdsong China Cove’s built environment is haunted with history of mass systemic racism.

The Angel Island Immigration Station, set in the cove, was designed to keep as many immigrants from becoming Americans as possible.

Architecture is the physical embodiment of history.

It’s how we remember what we did, how we lived and what we believed in. For that reason, the Immigration Station on Angel Island must remain standing, both as reminder of America’s dark history and to honor the triumph of survivors. Immigrant history shouldn’t be erased.

Instead, the cove needs to be reclaimed by survivors through an act of architectural resistance.

To maintain the memory,

foundations of two historically irrelevant buildings in the site are repurposed. The bricks from those buildings are reused to extrude walls up from the existing foundations, drawing a distinction between the sanctuary and site and usurping the bricks’ original use. The resulting buildings become an auditorium for naturalization ceremonies, an NCIS office, expediting the naturalization process, and a historical gallery. An outdoor submerged pavilion coalesces between the two buildings, providing outdoor flexibility to both during ideal weather. Where the pavilion intersects the gallery, a tower extends vertically, like the statue of liberty, as a final act of reclamation.

RESIST emulates the typology of a medieval ‘Keep” fortress.

Historically, Keeps were used to defend citizens from invasions-and like a Keep, RESIST shields immigrants from the immigration station ruins.

Naturalization ceremonies are held in the ‘Keep’, the ‘Great Hall’ houses historical exhibits, the ‘Bailey’ forms a proteted outdoor coalecent space and the ‘Tower’ provides views and marks ownership over the territory.

The gallery space is organized and lit by its folded roof. Under each valley fold, a partition wall supports. It creates a rhythm through the space, setting a solemn tone ideal for the history patrons to learn.

2200 Manor Road Design IV, Spring 2018 Professor Nichole Wiedemann

Austin is experiencing an expansion problem in an already broken city plan. As most Austinites know, I35 divided Austin culturally, economically, and historically.

But few outside of the community know Manor Road acts the same way, zoning the Cherrywood neighborhood separately from the Blackland neighborhood along with better school districts and infrastructure.

There is a need for mixed-use mid-level housing to accomodate growth that is sensitive to the needs of the neighborhood. After mapping impervious and pervious cover, I learned what the neighborhoods actually

needed was a shared park. I decided to do both, making a mid rise building with a grass roof accessible at ground level.

With a ramp from the north and the south, neighbors from both sides of the street can come and play with their kids here.

Restaurant space is tucked under the grass roof, and a park and outdoor farmers market coalesce in the middle of the complex. Channel glass shear walls form the structure, allowing light to permate into the neighborhood nearby, and creating elevated interior light conditions. The end result is a mid rise apartment complex with restaurants and a market below, acting as a park for every neighborhood off Manor.

First, we imagined an ideal apartment. This one uses light and view to organize space by program. Twinwall glass allows light but not view in to the bedroom and bathroom, while glass brings both light and view into the kitchen, living, and dining rooms.

Then, I

imagined tucking apartment units under grass as a single surface, so they might be accessible from the ground floor.

The grass roofing was designed with respect to program size shape. Ideas of light and material carried into the structure and scheme of the final product with glass exterior walls and twinwall structural glass walls.

Paris is beloved for its charming uniformity and tightly woven urban fabric, but the towns on its outer fringe are cut cleanly off.

Separating them from Paris, Boulevard Peripherique marks the threshold from Paris to Aubervillier. The area straddling the peripherique is sparse, lacking green area and community. Aubervillier can be sutured back into the urban tissue by inserting a block of mixed use housing spanning over the highway.

Rehabilitating the block starts with reconnecting the urban grid both across and along the peripherique: buildings can be positioned parallel and spanning perpendicular across the

highway like a bridge. Between the buildings, a new ground can infill-- floating over the highway. The new ground can reintroduce greenery into the area and become a space for people to gather and shop or grab a bite to eat. Affordable housing and office space can be positioned over the mixeduse ground floor. On the first floor, residents and office-goers share a balcony spanning between the buildings with access to services like a gym, laundromat and post office. ‘Structure Peripherique’ is a structure spanning across the highway, infilled with housing, services and public green space stitching the block back into surrounding urban fabric.

Boulevard Peripherique was built during Napoleon’s regime as a protective barrier around Paris. It protected Parisians from attacks through both world wars, before being converted to a highway. Today, it continues to act as a barrier between Paris and it’s outer suburbs. With the 2024 Olympics campus plans straddling the peripherique, now is the time to reinvest in the peripherique.

Structure Peripherique offers both family housing and student housing. The family housing is more spacious, with interlocking lofted areas which can be used as extra bedrooms or office space. The student housing are all studio apartments, condensed to provide fifty units at only 225 square feet each.

The Seaholm Intake Building rots on the shore of Lady Bird Lake like sunken treasure. It once played a role creating energy for the entire city, connecting the powerplant to the water, but when technological advances made Seaholm obsolete it was abandoned. Though no longer needed technologically, Seaholm occupies the most publicly enjoyed waterfront in Austin, and could offer so much more when repurposed as a public space. Seaholm Intake building can be a public fixture again, by reconnecting it to the water and the electrical grid.

With an infrastructural precedent set underground, a datum is established: the addition can be sited in the grid left behind by pipes. The Seaholm Building itself can be repurposed into a thermal bath- reusing the existing hardware between it and the Power Plant for water supply as well as

mechanical energy for heating.

The building has always existed as an instrument for water and electricity, thermal baths are a sensible and and delightful intersection of the two. Thermal baths and cinemas are both communal programs that are usually spent alone, today.

Inserting these programs provides a community resource for the people of Austin, reconnecting them to Seaholm.

The result is an alternate reality underground, equal and opposite to Seaholm Intake, fit for movie-going. Everything about being underground is opposite architecturally; space is carved away rather than put together; shadow is broken up by light rather than the reverse, and interstitial space is nonexistant until removed.

A cinema necessitates an environment where suspension of disbelief is mandatory.

Though disconnected today, the Intake and Powerplant buildings have historically been connected by pipes underground for radiant cooling in mechanical rooms. The Intake Building has a history of connecting to the powerplant with this service, and together the energy they harnessed served the city of Austin as a whole.

With the pipes abandoned and the powerplant nonfunctional, the Intake building is cut off. Considering its history, any addition to Seaholm should reconnect it to both its twin and its city.

These rockite cubes tested means of intersecting volumes in both plan and section.

Rather than contruct space tectonically, we started by making molds of the spaces we imagined first. Then we connected them and encased them in cubic formwork, before pouring the rockite.

The following are a selection of sketches from my time studying abroad in Europe.

I started in Edinburgh, before travelling to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dusseldorf, Bregenz, Vals, Lugano, Venice, Verona, Basel and Ronchamps. I drew at least one longform sketch every day on our travels for five weeks.

On the opposite page is a water color of “Nyhaven,” a famous canal in Copenhagen with beautiful reflections. The following sketches show some of my favorite places we saw: Edinburgh Castle, Castel Grande, Klaus Chapel, Venice in general, Therme Vals and Ronchamps Chapel.

Sketching is a language I had never learned before this trip. Drawing daily forced me to trust myself and removed the need for perfection every time.

As with watercolor- you can’t make it perfect and that’s the point: the messy watercolors tend to look better than the painstakingly curated ones.

Sketching from memory helped me to understand my subjects more deeply, too. Drawing a building, for example, reveals alignments and organizational patterns unrecognizable by just looking.

Before this trip, I never sketched as a design tool, but now I can’t imagine a project without it.

Centuries of use, battle, and repair left Castelvecchio with a variety of masonry texture to patch holes. When Carlo Scarpa was commissioned to turn it into a museum, he decided to continue layering rather than go off on his own. With great attention to detail, he layered surfaces onto the original for utility’s sake: useable floor plates on top of original, new walls erected for exhibits without ridding of the old ones, and so on. Though the new additions covered some of the old, he always left a margin so the original was visible-- leaving a mark that was authentically his, while also respecting its history. This drawing highlights his renovation strategy in plan, section, and axonometric, analyzing the integration of new and old from all angles.
