Personal Statement My passion for architecture has always been centred on the ideals of social change and critical analysis of the sites history and community. I feel it necessary that the subject matter within my projects embraces ecology, literature and healthy debate. I understand a balance of both the practical and boundlessness within the field demands commitment and a real love for the work produced.

Following the completion of a degree in Architecture at Northumbria University in 2015, I began working in a medium sized practice based in Darlington. There I was able to expand my knowledge in roles beyond an Architectural Assistant’s level from a wide range of sectors including; industrial, commercial, residential and conservation. I was involved in various aspects of procuring work from OJEU bids to marketing as well as producing planning applications, feasibility studies and producing tender drawings. One of the most enjoyable aspects of a practice is being part of thought provoking discussions about design; questioning people’s beliefs on architecture and learning from colleagues with decades of experience.

During my time at Niven Architects, I was exposed to a plethora of challenges that a number of firms face. The greatest outcome from this is being able to handle myself appropriately and professionally at all times. With this, I became one of the first female team leaders for the competition Build Earth Live in which we won a multi-disciplinary award in the practices history. Additionally, I share my experiences and mentor individuals who aspire to have a career in architecture in both colleges and the work place.

I took the decision to take a second year out to develop understanding and work on larger scale projects. My current employment as a Design Assistant at Ryder Architecture ltd has allowed me to become even more adaptable working as part of a unit. I am fortunate enough to work with people that encourage growth and see potential in a candidate. As designer of a student accommodation based in central Newcastle, I work with client, contractor and sub-contractors to problem solve within a developed design. This has made me a more diligent and thoughtful designer, allowing me to scrutinise complex proposals that prepare me for higher level design projects.

Working at Ryder reinforces my belief that a degree alone does not dictate a successful career path.

To me, hard work and perseverance is necessary to grasp the facets of competent design and constant reinvention. I have the confidence to communicate a scheme to colleagues and clients that offers up a platform to have a close working relationship. This incorporated with ideas of new environmentally aware, responsive and efficient construction ensures a paramount result.

Outside of education and employment, I enjoy taking part in design-based competitions. One in particular, The Allenhead’s Community Observatory, motivated me to examine the structure as a single unified organism. Taking inspiration from nature in its aesthetics and servicing. The philosophy of the proposal originated from the teachings of James Turrell, striving ‘to create an experience of wordless thought.’ With a constricted budget of £20,000 the scheme relied heavily on local craftsmanship, Northumberland educational institutions and environmentally sourced materials.

Progressing into a Masters in Architecture is an exciting prospect of which I am determined to achieve.

The progress within my career has given me the necessary tools to produce work to a high standard; however, I would like to expand my understanding of the elusive intersection between art and science that architecture occupies.

The Debate Centre.

The brief is to design a library for a new Lit and Phil which is located on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. This library will embody the ethos of the original L&P, but in a more accessible manner.

In a world of vapid success with little work we find ourselves with a dilemma to which the youth of today’s interests fall outside of important political issues which may or may not affect them.

The joy of having an opinion and standing up for what you believe in is lost in a reality television bubble. The task was to create an environment where young minds can explore the importance expressing yourself freely in an environment in numerous ways.

The opening of the Lit & Phil symbolised a change in times and traditions. It was a revolution of sorts, breaking many social barriers such as allowing women to attend. However, having said this, ‘hot button’ topics were strictly prohibited from being discussed until the mid 19th century. To understand conflict in modern times, analysing current events such as the Iraq War, North Korea, the Scottish Referendum, London Riots and israeli-Palestinian conflict is crucial.

Although they have occurred at different stages of time a constant theme runs throughout, which is that of the influence social media has on these important situations.

In to the Woods | Writer’s Retreat, Holystone (Y3) Holystone village is one of the most intriguing and enigmatic settlements in the Northumberland National Park. Built out of the ruins of a medieval nunnery, it is logical to see that institution as the principal influence on the early development of this community.

A writers retreat is that of a haven where people (in particular aspiring authors) come to find inspiration for their written texts. Existing writers retreats correlate around South England and Ireland. They are general rural and tranquil to accommodate the needs of the author.

The needs of writer are simple. A place to write, to read, to enjoy a form of expression such as painting and a place to meditate and reflect to conjure up imagination. To be at peace is essential.

The visitors centre will be an area that offers the public visiting Holystone information on the area as well as a ‘rest stop’. The main focus however, will be on the Northumberland authors and poets teaching and encouraging more and more people

Northumberland Project | Writer’s Retreat, Holystone (Y3) William Mitcheson Timlin (11 April 1892 - 7 June 1943) was an architect and illustrator. He was born in Ashington, Northumberland, the son of a colliery foreman. He showed talent for drawing at Morpeth Grammar School, and received a scholarship to the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle. In 1912, he joined his parents in South Africa where he completed his training in art and Architecture and remained for the rest of his life.

Timlin worked on The Ship that Sailed to Mars for two years. It was started as a diversion for his son in 1921. The work expanded until in its final form it had 48 pages of text and 48 colour plates showing remarkable flights of fantasy explore the importance expressing yourself freely in an environment in numerous ways.

The story is essentially a tale of triumph for a man with mundane life who decides to one day sail to Mars.

To address the spiritual aspect of the site, the formation of pavilions across this specific part of Northumberland National Park is not only for the writers benefit as a source of inspiration but an opportunity to encourage visitors to venture outside site and really experience Holystone.

The pavilions are derived from the a series of forms relating to the human body, natural surroundings and the ideals of form follows function.

Within the harsh surroundings of the remains of Harbottle Castle are reflected in the materiality of the pavilion.

Natural slate is used to create a smooth texture in comparison to the corrugated iron. These raw materials are used as a metaphor for the reality of war and is a reflective, sheltered space.

A writer’s hut into the woods An author seeks solitude and inspiration when writing. Therefore, there is a need for creating a source of huts in which writers can come to the site and essentially ‘live’ for weeks, months, years until they finish their work. The idea is that they are close enough to the site to be able to enjoy the facilities offered, yet far away not to be disturbed by the general public.

No paths or hard landscaping are around or to the writers huts, this is due to the fact that in some way there needs a sense of isolation. A visitor to the site may stumble across a hut, but no effort will be made to give the location of the huts to the public. The facilities offered in the writer’s hut is minimal yet truly engages the writer in this world away from technology and the monotonous grind of day to day life.

The Ship that Sailed to Mars Tower Located just outside of Lady’s Well, a warped tree sits. How it came to be this form is unsure. However, it creates this unconscious form. It is this teamed with the sun streaming through the beautiful woodland that produces this shape.

The Allenheads Community Observatory Design Competition Value: £20,000 Team Member: Alex Taylor Taking influence from the artist James Turrell’s ethos of design, The Allenheads Community Observatory combines sustainable design and the residents of Allenheads that will be as much as part of the community as the local pub or cafe. Built by the community, for the community.

One of the main features of the Observatory stems from being able to tell the direction of the telescope from outside the structure.

The nature of the warm room is dictated by the 1.2 metre pallets donated by a local pallet company for this project.

It ensures that the structure is ecological and sustainable.

Exploring James Turrell’s ethos of design, the concept of creating an experience opposed to ‘a building’. Reverting back to more primitive times of simplicity and away from factors such as light pollution, the observatory itself becomes part of a journey. And the night sky becomes the destination. Creating a way of inevitably luring the visitor to focus to the sky unknowingly and provide an environment to contemplate the surroundings.

Dictated by the brief, the warm room and observatory became separate entities as they provide different needs and suggests the idea that anyone is welcome to explore the site at their leisure.

The basis of the observatory formed the circulation that is required for all to view the telescope; whereas, the warm room becomes a more practical structure housing a place to seek shelter. This also influences the location of storage beneath the warm room which has an ease of access for astronomers who wish to use the telescope deck only. With having a closer proximity to the school house offering additional security, it implicates that the general circulation of the main site is not disturbed.

Developing a form that combined sustainable materials/ methods of construction alongside the importance of community became of paramount importance throughout the design process.

Considering the budget, steps were taken to reach out to local businesses with the aim of securing a sustainable building material that had the potential to be up cycled. The total annual production of wooden pallets is 505 million and although a high percentage of that is reused, the average life span of a pallet is 5-7 years. By treating the wood with care it can become a very durable, ecological building material. JC Pallets Recycle ltd (Gateshead) a pallet company that specialises in recycled pallets kindly donated 250 Pallets to the construction of Allenheads Community Observatory.

Understanding that a part of the structure must rotate to create 360º panoramic views of the sky for the telescope, the imperative design mechanism had to be easy to assemble and relativity cost effective. The Feilden Clegg Bradley project ‘The Observatory’ a portable artist residence and work shop was able to rotate in any which direction the artist wishes. On the basis of this, Rob Horne (Senior Engineer, Unitspark) who was part of creating the technology behind ‘The Observatory’ aided the design of the Allenheads Community Observatory and how parts of the artist studio framework could be extracted and utilised on a much smaller scale. Approaching Paul Atkinson of Allenheads Iron & Welding and a well known member of the Allenhead’s community with the design was an important stage of proposal as he not only gave ways to cut down costs for example, using motorbike chain and predominantly recycled metals. But also had a stem of knowledge of other local craftsman that could aid the project, including Craig, a fibreglass specialist and Jonah Maurice a craftsman and timber specialist.

Establishing the basis of working and simple timber framed construction, supplying of timber came of equal importance. Contacting organisations such as the forestry commission and Land Factor with the ideal requirement of using wood from trees that have fallen down naturally within the local area was the initial goal. Jonah Maurice another well known face to the Allenheads community, sources timber from the Allendale valley which sits at close proximity to the site. Specialising in organic shaped and straight saw log Larch and oak the former is felled by hand, extracted by horses and can be used for all stub tenon joint timber frames. Working on projects such as the Gateshead Central library and the Tyne rivers trust flood defence project he is the ideal candidate for what the project represents. Involving the community as much as possible throughout the construction period, Jonah not only has experience with local schools and teaching wood crafts and the unique way of collecting timber, he was willing to involve as many volunteers of all ages in the build. Corresponding with Joanne Clarke, a member of staff at Allendale’s Primary School on the potential school trips to the site, the involvement of children, teenagers, and parents creates a sense of the Observatory becoming as much part of the community as the local pub or cafe.

The materiality responds to its remote village surroundings, as the charred timber references the village’s dependency on local materials through the years. The method taken to char the timber is the Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient exterior technique that preserves wood. Besides being

BUILD NEW YORK LIVE 2015 Role: Team Leader Award: Best Multi-disciplinary BIM & use of Interoperability 48 Hour International BIM Competition The brief is split into two parts, the Residential Tower and the Community Outreach Sports Arena. The site is Hudson Yards (Western Yard) which is a rail yard covering a massive area, some 46, 0000 square meters.

The first challenge is to retain the rail tracks in their current location whilst taking structural support for the new buildings from between the tracks.

The brief for the Tower is to provide two Apartments per floor with a service core over 60 floors. There is to be dedicated on site Resident amenities for fitness and leisure.

There is to be a connection to the Sports Arena both visually and logistically, with only 30 feet distance between the two entities.

Property to the Rear of 38 Langholm Crescent Role: Lead Designer Value - Undisclosed Client, Nick Vassiliounis came to Niven Architects after a failed planning application submitted previously received 40 objections by various members of the community due to the location on the site and the design proposal of a 3 storey town house with double garage and five bedrooms.

Issues involving the original design where: overlooking neighbouring garden, amount of rooms in conjunction with amount of car park spaces provided, nature of existing site relating to boundary issues and disruption of site in terms of car parking and traffic.

Aims set out to rethink design completely leaving little impact to the surrounding area. Looking at potentially a 1 1/2 to 2 storey home with a double garage to submit to planning consisting of a Design and Access and Heritage Statement.

Property to the rear of 38 Langholm Crescent The scheme itself is a calculation of sorts due to the tight constraints of the site. The strategic positioning of each window allows natural light through each room, yet in keeping with the 22m overlooking distance from any neighbouring window. Timber louvres are fitted over the dormer window to prevent overlooking into the adjacent garden. The first floor changes in materiality to minimise the mass and enhances the design. Overall, the composition is an assortment of historical features reinvented in a contemporary approach.

Middleton Tyas Housing Scheme Role: Designer Value - £1M A sketch master plan housing development on a plot of land located in Middleton Tyas consisting of ‘Type A’, ‘Type B’ and ‘Type C’ houses. From the luxurious and extravagant to the first time buyer, affordable housing.

Type A - 280sqm £600-£1M Type B - 180sqm £200-£300k Type C - 100sqm £100-£120k The main issues towards the site stems from the flooding that can occurs due to the main water reserve.

Finding solutions for the drainage alongside with, footpath/ road placements and access routes the Claremont Group came to Niven Architects to find out whether that land was a viable investment.

Greystones | Granny Annex, Cotherstone Role: Lead Designer Value - Undisclosed Private Client needing a granny annex within the land they own for elderly parents. Kingspan SIP panels used as basis of easy, fast construction.

The materiality relating to the dry stone wall that surrounds the clients property gives a frame for treated timber cladding which in turn mirrors the natural, soft surroundings of the garden.
